Features

Each solar power assembly or wind turbine communicates with a central power control system. Running control wires through open fields is possible but has three expensive limitations: initial installation costs, maintenance expense, and inflexible configuration. A wireless approach with 802.15.4/ZigBee modules and simple mesh networking software resolves these issues. Each solar assembly or wind turbine is equipped with an 802.15.4/ZigBee module which enables them to communicate with each other and the central power control system via the wireless mesh network. Each solar assembly or wind turbine has a micro-inverter that converts DC current to AC power. AC power aggregates at the con-trol point, where a power mea-suring device determines how much power is sent to the elec-trical grid. The micro-inverters, power measuring systems, solar assemblies, and wind turbines use optocouplers which provide several benefits: they protect people, isolate low power input control cir-cuits from high power circuits, and remove ground loops and electrical noise from signals.
