welfare
These days, the welfare of all livestock is of paramount importance. And rightly so, for a
number of different reasons. The Easyload concept has been carefully designed around a
number of issues, the most important and fundamental being bird welfare. In addition,
high levels of welfare produce better quality grades and ultimately result in better end
product and increased profits.
As the poultry processing industry shifted from predominantly frozen produce to high
grade fresh products, extra factors and criteria have had to be taken into consideration
when looking at the production processes involved. And with social and market demands
ever challenging current practice, the Easyload system is well equipped to offer sound
and humane solutions.
Ensuring that birds are calm and stress free during collection, transportation and inplant
handling at the processing factory, not only benefits each individual bird but also has
untold benefits to the Processor as well. Easyload addresses a number of welfare issues.
● The Easyload system minimises stress to each bird
● Virtually no broken bones when using Easyload
● Less than one bird per 1000 as ‘Dead on Arrival’ when using Easyload
● Birds are caught, loaded and transported in a gentle and humane manner
● Easyload keeps human contact to an absolute minimum, reducing stress and
possible neglect
● Easyload drawers provide excellent ventilation with high grip perforated flooring
surfaces to keep birds secure and comfortable, preventing build up of debris
and water
● Humane gas stunning has processing benefits as well as minimising stress
levels to each bird

the easyload live bird handling system
Easyload isn't just a transportation method. It's a complete live bird handling system. It's a system that provides competitive
advantage through effectiveness and efficiency, and it's a system that has proved time and time again that it is simply unmatched,
providing numerous benefits to you the processor. The Easyload solution has been developed around
the highly versatile and worldwide proven Easyload Drawer and Module System.
Catching methods have been made easier and faster by the large open top drawers of the Easyload
System. The Easyload Harvester offers an impressive and effective alternative to traditional catching
and eliminates human contact with the birds.
Once loaded and packed with either chicken, turkey or duck, the Easyload Modules and Drawers are
designed to fit onto different truck or lorry formats for transportation to the processing plant.
At the processing plant, the full automatic Easyload Inplant System then begins the pre-line production
process. The system also washes and sanitises the Easyload Modules and Drawers before becoming
available for reuse.
The Easyload Inplant System delivers the live birds to either a hang on line, which uses traditional
stunning methods, or to the Easyload Controlled Atmosphere Stunner, after which the birds are presented
lifeless to the hang on line. The hanging of lifeless birds enables processors to effectively overcome a
number of welfare issues in addition to benefiting from a multitude of processing advantages.

The Poultry Harvester is the next generation of live bird catching loading and packing and
brings not only a new dimension but many benefits to the initial stage of processing.
Designed for rapid harvesting and loading of poultry in a humane manner, the Harvester
presents birds for transportation to the processing plant in a stress and damage
free condition. Automatic catching can be used in many different conditions but may be
unsuitable in some instances due to varied working environments.
Highly manoeuvrable, working in both posted and clear span sheds, the Harvester gently
gathers in excess of 200 birds in 30 seconds before transferring them to the Easyload
packing unit, an incomparable system which automatically places the birds in the
standard Easyload drawers.
Needing just one operator driving the catcher, another to operate the forklift, the Harvester
loads birds accurately and humanely at a rate of 20 modules per hour. At a 2kg live bird
weight this equates to an average of 6,000 birds every hour.
● Reduced labour requirements mean reduced costs
● Reduced bird damage ensures maximum yield
● Increased welfare considerations meet the ever growing need of today’s
social and market needs
● Easily moved between sites
● Birds need no human contact, reducing stress, damage and
possible abuse
● Control over catching ensures careful, conscientious and effective
harvesting
● Modules don’t enter the shed improving hygiene and food safety by
avoiding cross contamination issues
● Fully compatible with existing Easyload Modules and Drawers
● Consistent accuracy of counting compared to manual catching

The Easyload live bird handling solution is designed around the highly versatile and
worldwide proven drawer and module system.
The round cornered drawers are supplied with open or closed floor formats, depending on
ventilation and other requirements. Manufactured from a technically advanced grade of
high impact plastic, the drawers also offer a high grip surface keeping birds secure and
allowing water to easily drain away.
The drawers, easily slot into the three, four or five tier module, depending on bird size.
The module units are available in a mild steel hot dip galvanised finish or, in a high grade
stainless steel. The stainless steel option has the added advantage of producing a sealed
framework with no galvanising holes, allowing no hidden areas for dirt and bacteria to build up.
● Corrosion free and smooth frame finish modules ensure soiling is easier to remove
● Rigid and durable module structure specifically designed for forklift handling
● Clean top modules ensure improved cleaning
● Birds remain in the drawer to the hang on line, with no further human contact
whilst still alive
● Total flexibility to work with auto harvesting or hand catching
● Transportation options include side curtains, end curtains and drawer
retaining clamps
● Designed to fit across the width of standard lorries
● Only single sided fork lift access required to lorries

Live bird reception is a critical area in every modern processing plant, both in terms of
efficiency, staffing and factors affecting bird welfare. By applying the Easyload principles
and standards to all aspects of live bird handling from catching to hanging, the Easyload
system brings exceptional standard and quality levels to the pre-line production process.
With computer controlled technology, the Easyload Inplant system is fully automated,
controlling the timing for the arrival and processing of the birds.
When arriving at the plant, and after being placed in the holding area, the birds, still in the
Easyload drawers, are placed onto the Easyload Inplant and then enter the Controlled
Atmosphere Stunner without stress or human contact. The system automatically matches
the speed of the killing line. During the process the birds remain in the drawers, limiting
any stress and damage. The system ensures the continuous flow of drawers, in
processing order (first in, first out), to the hang on point.
The empty drawers are then inverted, removing all loose debris before being hygienically
and automatically washed and sanitised with integral high pressure pumps and filtration
systems. The clean drawers are then reinverted before being reloaded into the
automatically cleaned and sanitised empty module frame.
With hygiene and safety issues of primary importance, and compatibility with modern
disease control methods, the layout of the inplant machinery purposely lends itself to
separate clean and dirty areas within the reception bay.
● High speed flexible processing, up to 12,000 birds per hour
● Separate washing and sanitising of drawers exceeds modern hygiene
requirements
● Rapid lorry turnaround and optimum bird conditioning
● Reduced labour costs mean reduced overheads
● Reduced bird damage and stress dramatically improves meat quality
● Hang on area can incorporate dust extraction and lighting for the
comfort of the operators
● Directly integrates with Controlled Atmosphere Stunning

easyload controlled atmosphere stunning
With the advantages of technology and vital industry experience, the Controlled
Atmosphere Stunning (CAS) system offers immense benefits over ‘traditional’ electric
stunning. It is widely anticipated that because of these benefits, the CAS system is
becoming the industry standard, with special emphasis on the benefits of the humane
slaughter of birds.
Users of the system claim that the techniques used consistently deliver significant benefits
in processing and product quality.
● Possible to achieve maturation in less than two hours, saving time and
overheads
● Improved meat quality - no blood spots in breast meat
● Better and more consistent meat colour
● Overcomes the necessity of double handling into maturation holding area,
eliminating shrinkage and reducing labour costs, by allowing the cut up
process to take place immediately upon exit from the air chiller
● Exceeds poultry welfare guidelines laid down by the Department for
Environment Food, Rural Affairs and the Farm Animal Welfare Council
● Hanging Operators are able to work in optimum conditions
● Comfortable lighting conditions can be used
● Avoids the need for electrical stimulation
● Controlled atmosphere stunned birds actually die eliminating recoveries and
consciousness
● Birds are easy to hang, producing no dust or noise
● Completely solves welfare issues of hanging live birds
● Substantial reduction in bleed out time
● Only system to operate on a scientifically approved nitrogen mixture
● System can work with any gas mixture as legislation permits
eight
The Easyload drawers are unloaded from the transportation modules and are
automatically lowered into the CAS system containing predominantly Nitrogen. The
drawers take less than 2 minutes to pass through the Nitrogen based system, and are
presented lifeless for the next part of the production process. In addition to improving
bird welfare, there are also significant benefits to the operators. In redesigning the hang
on line for the CAS system, the distance the operators need to reach can be greatly
reduced improving the ergonomics of the task and handling lifeless birds vastly improves
working conditions by reducing noise and dust problems.
how it works
N2Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere forming four fifths of the air. It’s
properties insure that it’s easily extractable and is ideal for any process application. The
element seemed so inert that Lavoisier named it ‘azote’, meaning ‘without life’. Nitrogen
gas is colourless, odourless, inert and inexpensive.
Fact FileName: Nitrogen

Discovered: 1772 by Daniel Rutherford
Origin of Name: from the Greek words ‘nitron genes’ meaning ‘nitre’ and ‘forming’ and
the Latin word ‘nitrum’ (nitre is the common name for potassium nitrate
KNO#)
The Anglia Autoflow system uses a predominately nitrogen mixture. Using controlled
amounts of the mixture, the system has built in safety and control measures preventing
leakage and build ups of the gas. The system simply reduces oxygen from the chamber.
The used gas mixture is then carefully diffused back into the atmosphere, having
absolutely no environmental impact whatsoever.
● Inexpensive gas mixture
● Totally inert gas limiting health and safety concerns to an absolute minimum
● No environmental concerns
● Effective and efficient
● Avoids all welfare concerns
● Cuts operating costs significantly
● Highly abundant in the atmosphere
