Submerge your carved pumpkin in the bleach/ water mix over night. Remove and let air dry. Cover any exposed edges with Vaseline. Keep out of the rain or direct sunlight and your carved pumpkins will stay fresh from now till Halloween and beyond. Paper bag puppets - This is a great arts and crafts project for any age that will give you a Halloween decoration that you can keep for years. Start with a simple, small paper craft bag (you can get these at any craft or grocery store). Use construction paper in any color you wish to make eyes, tongues, hands, clothes and anything else you can think of. Place your hand in the bag with the folded side toward your palm and it naturally transforms into a puppet. Using glue, attach eyes to top of the bag, just on top of where your fingernails sit while your hand is inside the paper bag. Next open the mouth of the puppet by moving your thumb and finger apart. Glue a tongue and/or teeth into the mouth. Add arms and clothing to suit. You can make bag puppets that correspond to your child’s costume. This way you have a keepsake of what each child wore at Halloween. Add reflecting tape to costumes - Placing reflective tape on your child’s costume can make it safer for your child at night by offering visibility without detracting from the costume. You can purchase reflective tape at your local home improvement center. Cut into four strips. Place on the back of your children’s shoes and around their upper arm. Visibility is very important as the sun sets. Be safe and have Fun! Sara’s Ghoulish Pumpkin Pancakes (from Justin and Sara English) Buck’s Maple Barn, Maple Syrup (Jefferson, NY) On busy nights, such as Halloween, my wife Sara and I like to make Brinner, which is Breakfast for dinner. It is quick and easy and allows us to spend more time having fun with our family. Directions Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a bowl and set aside. Whisk milk, pumpkin, egg, and oil together in a bowl. Pour milk mixture into flour mixture and stir until just moistened. Batter will be slightly lumpy. Heat a lightly oiled griddle over medium-high heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Drop batter by large spoonfuls onto the griddle. Don’t be afraid to allow the batter to be misshaped, we are making monster heads here. Cook until bubbles form and the edges are dry (1 to 3 minutes). Flip and cook until browned on the other side (about 1 minute more). Repeat with remaining batter. Cook Oscar’s bacon in separate pan. Then cut strips of bacon in half and set aside. Next, place cooked pancakes on serving plate, use strips of bacon to make the ghouls hair. Then, create the eyes with the jelly beans. Three great Halloween tips:

Preserve your carved pumpkins - In a tub larger than your carved pumpkin, mix 2 teaspoons of household bleach per gallon of water. Submerge your carved pumpkin in the bleach/water mix over night.

Using glue, attach eyes to top of the bag, just on top of where your fi ngernails sit while your hand is inside the paper bag. Next open the mouth of the puppet by moving your thumb and fi nger apart. Glue a tongue and/or teeth into the mouth. Add arms and clothing to suit. You can make bag puppets that correspond to your child’s costume. This way you have a keepsake of what each child wore at Halloween.

Add refl ecting tape to costumes - Placing refl ective tape on your child’s costume can make it safer for your child at night by offering visibility without detracting from the costume. You can purchase refl ective tape at your local home improvement center. Cut into four strips. Place on the back of your children’s shoes and around their upper arm.
