Dear Parents & Guardians, By the time you good folks receive this message we will have concluded our 2019-20 Parent/ Teacher Conferences and phased through the Halloween Season. Our next main calendar events include Veteran’s Day (11/11) and the Thanksgiving Break (11/28 – 11/29). We are pleased to share with you that this has been one of the smoothest school year openings we have ever enjoyed. Much of the credit must go to our outstanding teacher and support staff cadre. Then, we need to honor the excellent effort being put forth by our children – and the support we receive from our parents. We once again implore you to support our efforts (school administration, PTA, SCC, and school community) to gain Hawaii Legislative support to release funding for much needed, additional classroom space. This will be the third year in row that we have appealed to the State House and State Senate for funding to permit construction of a multi-room building here on campus. We are hopeful that this will be our year. As the Holiday Season rapidly approaches, we strongly encourage families to develop a schedule that will allow for maximum time with your children. Time is our most precious commodity. Knowing that is a strong reinforcement to spend quality time as family --- while your children are still young. They will forever treasure the time you do spend with them. Please, never hesitate to contact our school whenever we can be of service to your family. 5th Annual Event a HOWLING Success Trunk or Treat was THE happening place to be on Oct 30th, with all the spirited fun and surprises of Halloween. Super Bee families did such an AMAZING job and went all out with their decorations! Willy Wonka and the Oompah Loompahs, Pokemon, Dr Seuss, Charlie Brown, and assorted ghosts and skeletons brought the event to life for the excited students who came to enjoy the fun.

Refreshments and treats were also plentiful - chocolate dipped marshmallows, witches brews, blinky balloons, books and toys, as well as candies - were enjoyed by all. It was great to see young and old alike having so much fun!

NATIONAL FAMILY LITERACY MONTH

- from the website: National day calendar.com National Family Literacy Month is an annual designation observed in November. This month, get the whole family snuggled up on the couch and open up a good book. Studies show that reading aloud with mom or dad is the most important activity when it comes to preparing children to read on their own. And if you raise a good reader… Pretty much anything is possible!

Reading helps with vocabulary, writing skills, attention span, memory, and teaches us about other times and places. Even if your child is just a baby, you should still sit down and read with them every once in a while. An infant can look at pictures and listen to your voice as you read stories to them… And believe it or not, studies show that that alone can have a profound effect on your child when it comes to learning later on in life. Grab a few books, gather the fam, snuggle up, and let a book take you all to another place together.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Get the whole family together and enjoy some reading. If you are reading to toddlers or other young children, try to remember when you were young, and the way you liked listening to your parents or teachers read with excitement in their voice, and when they gave you enough time to look at the pictures as well as listening to the words. Here are a few things you can do this month (and hopefully every month to follow) to participate in National Family Literacy Month.

1. Set aside a little time for reading every day, even if it’s only for 15 or so minutes.

2. Go through both old and new books, and set some of your favorites around the house. They make cute decorations, and maybe one of the kids will pick one up and start reading!

3. Take a few trips to the library.4. Read your child the book version of their

favorite movie. If they can read on their own, encourage them to read it!

5. Start a book club with friends and family.6. Participate in a book drive and donate old or

used books you no longer need. This will help families in need read to their kids.
