Introduction

What is eBay?

eBay is an online auction that gives people the opportunity to buy and sell merchandise.

Since this is a worldwide service provided online, there are no limited hours of operation

and it is always available to anyone who wants to buy or sell products.

Required Materials:

Email Account

Credit Card OR Second E-mail Account

Safety Precaution:

Review the seller rating when considering a purchase. (higher rating better)

Setting up an eBay Account

Step 1Go to the eBay home page at www.ebay.com

Step 2Click on the Register Now button (shown below in Figure 1). This opens the first

registration screen.

Step 3Enter your first name then move to the next field and enter your last name.

(Figure 2) Continue this procedure until you have provided all of the requested

information. When you reach the bottom, click Continue>.

Note:Do not include symbols, punctuation marks or spaces in your User ID. If you use

one of these things in your User ID, the screen from Figure 2 will reappear with a

message in red letters telling you to correct the field. Figure 3 is the options you have

when the User ID you have chosen is already being used. Enter three favorite things and

click the Suggest button or try another User ID and click the Create button.

Step 4Enter a credit/debit card number then click continue. OR Click the link enter a

different email. (Figure 4) If you do not have an email address that fits the criteria listed

you must enter credit/debit card information.

Step 5Read the User Agreement and the Privacy Policy; use the arrows on the right to

scroll through each document. (Figure 5) If you agree to the conditions of the User

Agreement and the Privacy Policy, click the select box for both I am 18+ years old and

I understand that Click the I agree to these terms> button to move to the next

screen.

Step 6Check your email at the address shown on the Confirm Your Email screen.

Step 7Click on the link provided in the email and the screen shown in Figure 8 will

appear. You may now purchase items on eBay.

Step 2 a) Browse through categories in the drop-down menu listed under section 1,

entitled Find. (Figure 2)

b) Search feature, (Figure 3), can be used being sure to include key words to narrow

down search.

A list of items is generated (Figure 4) and includes title, price, number of bids, and time

left. List of items can be sorted by the amount of time left, or price. Matching

categories link on the left-hand side can be used to narrow down search more.

Step 3 Buy immediately at the specified price or place a bid to obtain the best possible

price. These options are only available if the words Buy it now are displayed in the

bid column. (Figure 5)

Note: In addition to starting bid, current bid, and time left, seller information is provided

and should be reviewed. The sellers user ID, and rating based on other transactions,

corresponding star, positive feedback percentage, and link to read comments are

provided. If there is a store symbol, you have the option of clicking on this link to see

what other items the seller has for sale.

Pay Pal is eBays preferred method of payment. See figure 9 for more payment

information. Items information (figure 6) and payment options (figure 7) are provided

and should be reviewed.

Step 4 Bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay. (Figure 11) Then eBay will bid

incrementally only if there is a competing bidder and only up to your bid (a.k.a. Proxy

bidding). The first time a bid is placed or buy it now option in chosen, you will be

asked to register. If you are outbid, (Figure 12) you will receive an email asking if you

want to increase your bid. Or you will receive an email telling you that you have won.

Selling an Item

Step 1Go to www.ebay.com (Figure 1). Before you begin, it is a good idea to search the

site to check out other users listings that are similar to the item you are selling to get

some ideas about how to design your selling page and under what category to place your

item.

Step 2Click the Sell tab from the main page. Now you must register as an eBay

seller. Even if you already have an eBay account, if this is your first time selling, you will

need to provide credit card and checking account information.

Step 3Choose the selling format for your item (Figure 2). If your feedback rating is

below 17, the only option you have is the traditional eBay auction, where the highest

bidder wins. If you have a rating of 17 or higher, you also have the option to sell at a

fixed price. This allows a buyer to instantly purchase your item at your specified price

without having to worry about the auction process. After you select the option you want,

click the Continue button to move to the next step.

Step 4Select a title and category for your item (Figure 3). You have a maximum of 45

characters, and no HTML, asterisks, or quotes are allowed. A truthful and explanatory

title is very essential. It is not a good idea to use words like Wow or Fantastic in your

title, as users usually dont search for those words. You can add a subtitle for an extra 50

cents.

Step 5Write a description of your item (Figure 4). Make sure to list all the benefits,

specifications, and parts included in the item. More details help your buyer to make an

informed purchase and will give you an advantage over sellers who don't provide enough

information. Notify if this item is new or used and if it is still under warranty, if

applicable. You can also use HTML tags or the HTML Editor provided by the website.

Step 6Define some more details (Figures 5-7) about the listing of your item, such as

Duration, Start Time, Quantity and Price. You can also decide if you want a picture on

your listing to further advertise your item.

Step 7Select your payment and shipping options (Figures 8 & 9). It is important to let

the potential buyers know all costs, such as shipping insurance, up front so there will be

no surprises later on in the process.

Listing button at the bottom to complete the process.
