first foal out of the maiden mare Kakadu (Tizway), who is a half-sister to the multiple Graded Stakes winner Protonico (Giant’s Causeway), from the immediate family of Chilean Horse of the Year and American Gr.1 winner Wild Spirit (Hussonet). The four-year-old mare is owned by Chilean resident Oussama Aboughazale of International Equities Holding Co.

American Pharoah, a homebred of Ahmad Zayat, began his haul of eight Gr.1 races with victory in the Del Mar Futurity Stakes at two. Other top-level scores outside of the Triple Crown races included taking the Front Runner Stakes, the Arkansas Derby, the Haskell Invitational Stakes, the Travers Stakes and culminated in a six and a half-length win in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland.

Retired to Ashford Stud, American Pharoah covered at a fee of $200,000 last year, but his stud fee for 2017 has been set as private.

FIRST FOAL FOR DUAL GROUP ONE WINNER CARPE DIEMWinStar Farm’s Carpe Diem (Giant’s Causeway), Gr.1 winner at both two and three, sired his first reported foal on New Year’s Day when a colt was born on Sunday at Ocala Stud in Florida.

Bred by Centaur Farm, the colt is out of the seven-time Stakes-winning Songandaprayer mare Evelyn’s Dancer.

A $1.6 million OBS March Sale topper, Carpe Diem began his decorated career by winning his debut in Saratoga. On his second start at two, the chesnut won the Gr.1 Breeders’ Futurity Stakes at Keeneland.

As a three-year-old, he captured the Gr.2 Tampa Bay Derby

before returning to Keeneland to win the Gr.1 Blue Grass Stakes. Campaigned by Stonestreet Stables and WinStar, he earned $1,519,800 on the track before retiring to stud a year ago.

He hails from the multiple Gr.1-producing Unbridled’s Song mare Rebridled Dreams. He covered 162 mares in his first book in 2016 and is set to stand his second season at WinStar for a fee of $25,000 stands and nurses.

“Carpe Diem is one of the best horses we’ve ever bought and raced, and there is great anticipation for his first foals arriving in the coming months,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar President and CEO. “Stonestreet, WinStar and many other shareholders and top breeders have supported this horse and will continue to support him. Carpe Diem bred a tremendous first book of mares in 2016, and the future is very bright.”

STALLION NEWSSWEDEN

SMART US JUVENILE SWIPE TO STAND IN SWEDENFour-year-old Swipe (Birdstone), runner-up to the 2015 US Champion Two-Year-Old Nyquist (Uncle Mo) in four consecutive races, has arrived at Ravdansen Stud, where he will commence stud duties in 2017. The stud has also been the home of the multiple Champion sires Diaglyphard and Eishin Dunkirk.

Swipe belied his meagre $5,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale price with a two-year-old career in which he finished second behind Nyquist in the Gr.2 Best Pal Stakes, Gr.1 Del Mar Futurity, Gr.1 Frontrunner Stakes and the Gr.1 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, gradually getting closer to him on each occasion. He is out of a Grand Slam half-sister to three Stakes winners and his extended family includes the US Champion Filly Outstandingly.

The stud’s Ivan Sjoberg commented: “We are very pleased to have acquired Swipe to stand at stud in Sweden. We have always aspired to stand Champion sires here at Ravdansen and, with Swipe joining Barocci, our son of Deep Impact whose first foals arrived last year, we hope we have the next generation of Champion sires for Sweden.

“We have never had a sire in Sweden who had anywhere near the ability Swipe showed as a two-year-old in 2015, when he was rated the second-best two-year-old in North America on the Experimental Free Handicap.”

There will be two temporary exhibitions taking place at Palace House National Heritage Centre in Newmarket from 26th January until 18th June, including Chris Smith’s ‘Gods of Sport’. The exhibition celebrates 50 years of Smith’s work.

The second temporary exhibition is named ‘Boxiana: Heroes of the Ring’ and explores prize fighters from Daniel Mendoza and Richard Humphreys fight in 1788 through to the inaugural ‘world title’ international boxing match that took place between Tom Sayers and John Heenan in 1860. The pictures have been selected from the collection of the British Sporting Art Trust and private collections.

RACING NEWSBRITAIN

INTRIGUING ENTRIES NAMED FOR CLARENCE HOUSE CHASENine entries were announced yesterday for the Gr.1 Clarence House Chase, which will take place on 21st January. Last year’s one-two Un De Sceaux (Denham Red) and Sire De Grugy (My Risk) have been entered, the latter forming part of a possible two-pronged attack by Gary Moore, who has also entered Ar Mad (Tiger Groom) in the extended two-mile event.

However, the most intriguing entrant is the novice Altior. Winner of the Gr.1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last season, the seven-year-old son of High Chaparral is unbeaten in three chasing starts, which have included the Gr.1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase and the Gr.2 Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase on his last two starts.

The other remaining entrants are 2015 winner Dodging Bullets (Dubawi), Eastlake (Beneficial), who returned to form last time out in handicap company at Cheltenham’s International meeting, Royal Regatta (King’s Theatre), winner of the Gr.2 1965 Chase at the track in November over two miles and three furlongs, the last time out Gr.2 Desert Orchid Chase winner Special Tiara (Kayf Tara) and Top Gamble (Presenting), a three-time Gr.2 winner who was third in Graded handicap company at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.

MAURICE SET TO STAND AT SHADAI STALLION STATIONThe six-time Gr.1 winner Maurice (Screen Hero) has been retired from racing and will spend the northern hemisphere breeding season standing at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of ¥4,000,000 (approx £27,000).

The six-year-old boasts a record of eleven wins from 18 starts, six of which came at Gr.1 level. He made his debut in Tokyo on his sole juvenile start, but it was at four when his career took off, winning all five of his starts that campaign, four of which were Gr.1 level, including the Hong Kong Mile. At five he added two more Gr.1 races when upped in trip from a mile to ten furlongs.

Bred by Togawa Bokujo, he was bought by Northern Farm for ¥10,500,000 at the 2013 Hokkaido Horses-In-Training Sale in Japan. He is out of the Carnegie mare Mejiro Frances, whose dam is the Gr.2 winner Mejiro Monterey.

STAR PERFORMERNEVER OFF DUTY (Ire), 5g,

Beneficial – Carrowmore Queen (Montelimar) O: Mary Tyner, B: Joseph Daniels, T: Robert Tyner €45,000 2015 Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale by P O’Connor, consigned by Mr Joseph Daniels

It will be a surprise if this horse believes he has ever been in a race following his debut at Dromahane a few days after Christmas. Gliding comfortably along in front under the master that is Derek O’Connor, he doubtless heard the hooves of rivals queuing up to take him on, yet none could get to his hindquarters, and he won easing down in the card’s fastest time. Runner-up Double Portrait (Portrait Gallery), who was five lengths adrift after being delivered with a telling move through the field by Jamie Codd, had the benefit of a previous outing. Unsold when offered as a yearling at Tattersalls Ireland’s February Sale, he returned to that company and proved more popular as a three-year-old store at its flagship Derby Sale. His dam was unraced, but has produced other winners of points and under Rules, while his sire was one of the best of recent years.

BLACK PIRATE (GB), 5g, Black Sam Bellamy – Proper Posh (Rakaposhi King) O/T: Philip Rowley, B: Shade Oak Stud & D Jenks £5,000 2012 DBS December National Hunt Mare and Foal Sale by Crohane Stud, consigned by Shade Oak Stud £12,000 2015 DBS Spring Store Sale by Highflyer Bloodstock, consigned by Crohane Stud

This fine, big horse was not hurried into action following his purchase as a Doncaster store, but the patience paid off when he scored readily on debut in a maiden race at Chaddesley Corbett over Christmas. His eleven rivals may not have been world-beaters, but he won by 15l and 30l, and in a time that was slightly quicker than division two of the race. Not only did he look a lovely prospect, he bore all the hallmarks of a young horse with lots of improvement to come. His impeccably-bred sire has been responsible for plenty of winners, but could do with a replacement for flagship The Giant Bolster, while his dam comes from the family of outstanding two-miler Pearlyman. Expect to see her son in action again soon, next time in a sales ring

SHIMMERS ROCK (Ire), 5m, Westerner – Thuringe (Turgeon) O: The Athy Boys Syndicate, B: Ronald Brown, T: P A Fahy €19,000 2013 Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale by Tower View Stables, consigned by Foxleigh House £35,000 2015 DBS Spring Store Sale by Alan Harte, consigned by Screen Hill Lodge

Ireland’s ability to stage four-year-old maiden mares’ races with lots of runners is a virtue in several ways, not least in creating truly-run races and some depth to the form. A case in point came in the 16-runner version at Dromahane, in which this mare (who has now become a five-year-old) finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length by Cabaret Queen. The winner had nodded on landing over the second-last, and this mare had been flat-footed at the last, so there could be little quibbling with the result, but the winner had the benefit of a previous run, albeit it was a short experience following a fourth-fence fall. Both mares have enough pedigree to suggest they can do well on the track and in the breeding shed, and this one, being a half-sister to the hugely-talented The New One, could provide racing fans with pleasure for years to come. She was unsold in two early visits to the ring, but eventually came good, and her dam was placed over jumps and is a half-sister to winners on both sides of the Channel.

REWARD FOR KOH AND GURU-GURUTrainer Desmond Koh gained some consolation for missing a start in the Singapore Gold Cup when he produced Guru-Guru (NZ) (Faltaat) to win the Gr.3d New Year Cup at Kranji.

By Faltaat, Guru-Guru may now be a contender for the Singapore Derby in July, a race Koh won in 2012 with Chase Me (NZ) (Storm Creek).

“It’s too early to tell, but he ticks a few boxes for now. It’s definitely a race we can think about in due course,” Koh said.

“He is raced by the same connections as Chase Me. So there is a bit of a connection, but let’s not get too carried away.”

CYLINDER BEACH CONFIRMS GR.1 GOALCylinder Beach (NZ) (Showcasing) has confirmed a Gr.1 campaign in the winter by smashing the Eagle Farm 1600m record in the Listed Bernborough Handicap in Australia on Saturday.

On a day of fast times, he ran 1.34.51 seconds, taking 1.71s off the previous record.

Trainer Desleigh Forster has always had a high opinion of Cylinder Beach, but deliberately gave him just three runs this summer.

“I think a race like the Gr.1 Doomben Cup is right up his alley,” said Forster.

Cylinder Beach is by Showcasing (Oasis Dream), who shuttles to Haunui Farm in New Zealand from Whitsbury Manor Stud, he is out of the Rainbow Quest mare Queen’s Colours.

BIG NEW YEAR’S DAY OF RACING A great day of racing took place in Auckland on New Zealand’s Northern Island on Sunday.

The feature race, the Gr.1 Sistema Railway Handicap (1200m), was won by Start Wondering (NZ) (Eighth Wonder). Emotional scenes greeted the winner as he returned to scale after providing father and daughter, Evan and JJ Rayner, with their first Gr.1 winner as a training partnership.

Swissta (NZ) (Swiss Ace) notched a hat-trick of wins with his victory in the Gr.2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m). Swissta continued a grand Christmas carnival at Ellerslie for trainer Richard Collett’s daughter Alysha, who rode her first G.1 winner on Boxing Day aboard Consensus (NZ) (Postponed) in the Zabeel Classic.

Four-year-old Ruud Not Too (NZ) (Bernardini) capped a notable double when winning the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile having won the inaugural running of the Dunstan Feeds Rising Stars Championship Final at the venue just six days earlier. It was also the third victory on the day for both jockey Danielle Johnson and trainer Stephen Marsh.

Three-year-old filly She Brings Joy (NZ) (Sebring) broke through for her maiden win with class when she took the Gr.2 Royal Stakes (2000m). Bred by Valachi Down’s Kevin Hickman, She Brings Joy is out of his Irish mare In The Mood (Hawk Wing).

An extra 100m made all the difference when juvenile Hasahalo (NZ) (Savabeel) turned the tables on the previously unbeaten Gift Of Power (NZ) (Power) in the Gr.3 Eclipse Stakes.

The well travelled St Jean (Teofilo) was an impressive winner in the Gr.3 City of Auckland Cup (2400m).

St Jean began his racing career in Ireland with a maiden win at three before continuing his career in Australia. His New Year’s Day win, the sixth of his career, came on his third start for his new trainers Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs.
