Sheikh Mohammed’s brother Sheikh Hamdan of Shadwell Estate Company purchased the third-highest price lot at $1.05m for Lot 368, a Curlin filly from Denali Stud. She is out of Gr.1 Frizette Stakes winner Dreaming Of Julia (A P Indy).

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Godolphin acquired the two most expensive offerings for the second straight day. The leader was Lot 274, a Curlin colt, who is the first foal out of Australian-bred Bounding. The daughter of Lonhro was Champion Sprinter in New Zealand and is a half-sister to Gr.1 Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo). The $4.1m price for the Eaton Sales, agent of Stonestreet Bred & Raised, offering was the highest in September since 2010. The bidding primarily between Godolphin and the Coolmore team stalled briefly around $3.7m before resuming.

“Luckily we are under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed and he is a decisive man and he is completely in control,” said Anthony Stroud who signed the ticket. “He is the one who makes the decisions and in this particular case he told me to continue.”

Stroud was all smiles as the press swarmed him earlier following the $2.9m purchase of Lot 258, a January-foaled War Front colt out of Gr.1 Kentucky Oaks winner and millionaire Believe You Can (Proud Citizen) who was bred and raced by former Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones. The colt is a half-brother to Ellis Park Derby winner Believe In Royalty (Tapit). The vendor was Jones’s Airdrie Stud.

“It’s meant everything,” said Jones’s son Bret. “When we had the whole family there and [Believe You Can] wins the Kentucky Oaks [in 2012], you have those memories. And now years later we’re making new memories with family members that weren’t even here back then. So it’s very special. You have a family farm [like Airdrie], it’s just very special to be able to share it with the people that you love.”

The brothers acquired the co-fourth most expensive lots at $1m. Shadwell bought Lot 351, a War Front filly offered by Gainesway. She is out of the Tapit mare Delightful Joy, winner of the Gr.3 Monmouth Oaks.

Godolphin picked up Lot 199 by Union Rags. The filly is out of the unplaced Bernardini mare Zayanna, who also produced Gr.2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes winner Point Of Honor (Curlin). The page has been enhanced since printing after Point Of Honor was runner-up in the Gr.1 Alabama Stakes and Gr.1 CCA Oaks. The family also includes Gr.3 West Virginia Derby winner Mr Freeze (To Honor And Serve) and Gr.3 Daytona Stakes winner Dilemma (Grand Slam).

Three lots dead-heated for sixth at $900,000. Lot 250 is a Flatter half-brother to Gr.1 Arlington Million Stakes winner Beach Patrol (Lemon Drop Kid). Both were produced by the Quiet American mare Bashful Bertie. The family includes Gr.2 Prioress Stakes winner Hurricane Bertie and Gr.2 Falls City Handicap winner Allamerican Bertie. Larry Best’s Oxo Equine made the purchase from Michelle and Jody Huckabay’s Elm Tree Farm.

“We are a big fan of Flatter,” Jody Huckabay said. “We really enjoy doing business with Claiborne [Farm, where Flatter stands]. Their horses are very fairly priced and you can make a big profit. We had no idea what he would bring. His reserve was nothing compared to what he brought.”

Juddmonte Farms went to $900,000 for Lot 278, a Curlin colt from Gr.2 Forward Gal Stakes winner Broadway’s Alibi (Vindication). The extended family includes Eclipse Award Champion and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Eliza (Mt

Livermore) and Gr.3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap winner Golden Lad (Medaglia D’Oro). Lane’s End was the vendor.

The third at that number was Lot 325, a Tapit filly from Gainesway. Shawn Dugan signed the receipt for the half-sister to Argentine-bred Madame Stripes (Equal Stripes), a Graded Stakes performer in her homeland and later in California. Their dam is the winning Argentine-bred Silver Finder mare Courtisane.

Checking in ninth on the chart was Lot 321 at $875,000. The American Pharoah filly is out of the Gr.1-placed Connie And Michael (Roman Ruler). Jamie McCalmont, acting on behalf of Jon Kelly, made the purchase from Betz Thoroughbreds.

Tying for 10th at $750,000 were Lot 202 and Lot 349. The former is a colt by Union Rags out of the unplaced Bernardini mare Zondaq, a half-sister to Gr.2 Gulfstream Park Handicap winner Discreet Dancer (Discreet Cat) and Gr.2 Swale Stakes winner Travelin Man (Trippi). Shadwell Estate Company made the transaction from Dromoland Farm.

Lot 349 is a Into Mischief filly out of the Stakes-winning Bandini mare Defy Gravity, who was led out unsold for $340,000 at Fasig-Tipton last November. Noted relatives include Gr.1 Kentucky Derby winner and sire Super Saver (Maria’s Mon). Paramount Sales was the vendor and Bill Rucker, JCE Racing and Travis Durr are the new owners.

“I was guardedly optimistic because we had such a monster sale last year, but everybody talked about the quality of the offerings,” Elliston said. “We have 569 horses [catalogued this year] versus 989 in [a four-day] Book 1 last year. We are not worried about that now,

After a non-selling day on Thursday, the auction resumes on Friday and runs through to 22nd September with sessions beginning at 10am.

ROARING LION FEATURED ON COVER One of the highest honours for a thoroughbred is gracing a catalogue cover as a star sales graduate. This year’s Book One cover spreading the first three days features an elite eight including the recently-deceased Roaring Lion, whose resume included four consecutive Gr.1 triumphs. A $160,000 purchase at the 2016 September Sale, he banked $3,575,197.

Joining him on the front cover is Gr.1 Preakness Stakes hero War Of Will, a $175,000 buy-back in 2017 who has earned beyond $1m. The Gr.1 Arlington Million Stakes winner Bricks And Mortar, a $200,000 buy in 2015 who has amassed nearly $5m, and Gr.1 Alabama Stakes winner Dunbar Road ($350,00 in 2017; earnings of $587,900) complete the front foursome.

Millionaires Bellafina, Mr Melody and Vino Rosso along with Gr.2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes winner Point Of Honor share the back cover as top shelf winners of 2019. Bellafina went unsold via the auction process on a final bid of $220,000 in 2017, Vino Rosso cost $410,000 in 2016, Mr Melody attracted $100,00 the same year, and Point Of Honor was an $825,000 reserve not attained two years ago.

River Equine for $1.1m. Lot 420, from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment, is also a first foal, her dam being Gr.3 winner Gloryzapper (Ghostzapper).

On behalf of the buyers, Ben Colebrook was getting involved in a million-dollar plus horse for the first time and said: “I was not doing the bidding, but we all liked the filly. We thought she was a very good walker and we loved the way she moved. She was our pick of the sale. In this market you have to stretch for what you want; it is very strong.

“She will go to [Donamire Farm in Lexington] and we will break her there. She will come to me at some point and hopefully we will have some fun with her.”

Repole Stables, St Elias and MV Magnier went to an even $1m for Lot 428, yet another popular son of Curlin. Born on 6th February last year, this bay is the second foal out of the A P Indy mare Got Lucky, whose three Stakes wins included the Gr.1 Spinster Stakes. The mare’s dam is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Girolamo and Graded winners Accelerator and Daydreaming (dam of Gr.1 winner Imagining), and the family also includes the likes of Rhythm, Bluegrass Cat and Super Saver. The colt came from Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales.

GOFFS UK

FIRST YORTON SALE TODAYThe first Goffs UK Yorton Sale will offer a total of 38 entries and selling will start at 1:00pm. The stud will open its doors at 8am for inspections. The new initiative has been an ambition of Yorton Stud owner David Futter and his team for some time and this year’s inaugural sale will be the first of what is hoped will develop into an annual event on the sales and National Hunt calendar.

The select catalogue will offer 29 two-year-olds and nine yearlings, a mixture of horses that were either bred on the stud or sourced from elsewhere. The catalogue is not only unique in that it will offer predominately two-year-old stores, but also that it will offer four colts.

Among the many interesting horses on offer are: Lot 3, a Great Pretender filly out of a half-sister to multiple French Graded winner Saint Goustan Blue; Lot 8, a Blue Bresil filly out of a half-sister to triple Gr.1 winner Valseur Lido; Lot 11, a No Risk At All colt out of the multiple French Graded winner Princesse Kap; Lot 15, a Pether’s Moon gelding from the family of Best Mate; Lot 20, a Fame And Glory gelding from the family of Denman; Lot 21, a Blue Bresil gelding out of a full-sister to Gr.1 winner Cheltenian; full-brother made £170,000 at Goffs UK Aintree Sale;

KEENELAND DAY 3 EARLY LOTS

AMERICAN PHAROAH COLT SETS THE EARLY PACEThe third and final session of Book 1 of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale had produced another five seven-figure lots by half way.

Leading the way at $1.3m was Lot 382, an American Pharoah colt from Hunter Valley Farm who was snapped up by Jamie McCalmont, as agent for MV Magnier and Sarah Kelly. The May-born bay is the third foal out of a daughter of Smart Strike and Stakes winner Alchemilla (Deputy Minister), from the highly successful Courtly Dee family.

MV Magnier commented: “We are absolutely delighted to get him. He will go to Bob Baffert, who was very high on the horse. He has a couple of very good American Pharoahs and Aidan O’Brien is pretty confident with Monarch Of Egypt in Ireland. American Pharoah is going so well at the moment.”

Adrian Regan, manager of the consignors Hunter Valley Farm, who had bought the colt for $340,000 in this sales ring last November, added: “Brilliant result, we are delighted. As a weanling, we thought he was the best foal on the grounds. He is only going to get better.”

Lot 431, a Curlin colt from Glennwood Farm, was the first of two yearlings to sell for $1.2m, in his case to West Bloodstock. Acting as agent for prominent owners Robert and Lawana Low, the agent has acquired a half-brother to Gr.1 Hollywood Derby winner Mo Town (Uncle Mo), whose second and third dams are Stakes winners by Carson City and Danzig respectively.

Realising the same figure a little while later was Lot 472, a February-foaled colt by Medaglia D’Oro from Gainesway, as agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised. This bay is the first foal of the Gr.2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes winner Keen Pauline (Pulpit) and was purchased by agent Ben McElroy.

The colt was bought for Qatar Racing and Simon Callaghan commented: “He’s by a top stallion. I thought physically he was one of the top horses in the sale. We knew he was going to be in and around a million and we were lucky to get him. I think he’s a really good horse.

“He is for Qatar Racing. I’ll be the trainer. Sheikh Fahad is upping his interest in racing in America and is spending more time in California, so he wants to go after some of these high-end colts and go down the road of the [Kentucky] Derby, we hope.”

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWFRANCE

BREAKTHROUGH STAKES SUCCESS FOR ALWAYS MAGICThe Listed Prix Alain et Gilles de Goulaine, a 3600m hurdle contest for four-year-olds, was the first of two races at the grade at Auteuil yesterday and it was won by the Gabriel Leenders-trained Always Magic who was winning for the second time.

The son of Sunday Break raced in mid-division as Fuji Flight (Day Flight) set a decent gallop up front. At the halfway stage, Amour Du Mathan (Saint Des Saints) came through to temporarily take up the running, while Always Magic made steady improvement into about fourth. He travelled well into the straight and landed over the second-last in front. He ran on in the long straight to score by a length from Henry Brulard (Planteur), with Vimont (Teofilo) a further three and a half lengths adrift in third.

Placed once in two starts at three, Always Magic won first time out this year and was fifth in the Gr.1 Prix Alain du Breil in May.

Bred by SCEA des Prairies and Mme Sylviane Jeffroy, he is a half-brother to the Listed Prix Finot winner Magic Saint (Saint Des Saints) and the Gr.3 Prix Aguado-placed Liberatore (Poliglote). They are out of the Listed Prix Univers II third Magic Poline (Trempolino).

DEBUTANTE MASSILA OBLITERATES LISTED PRIX FINOT FIELDThe Listed Prix Finot, a three-year-old fillies-only race, was won by the same trainer Gabriel Leenders with Massila. The daughter of Barastraight was hugely impressive in winning by 12 lengths on her debut.

Of the catalogued yearlings, 583 are qualified for the 2020 Haras de Bouquetot October Sale Criterium, which will be run during the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend at Longchamp. This year’s race will take place on Saturday, 5th October. Reserved for two-year-olds sold at the 2018 sale and qualified by their owners, the third edition of the race is worth €275,000 in prize money down to eighth place, with €137,500 to the winner. The breeders of the first three home will be rewarded by the race sponsor Haras de Bouquetot with a free covering to Shalaa for the winner, Olympic Glory for the second, and Zelzal for the third.

EQUILATERAL GETS HIS HEAD IN FRONT IN SCARBROUGH STAKESCharlie Hills’s sprinters continue to be in fine form this season and Equilateral became the latest speedster from his Wetherdown House stables to land a big prize, winning the Listed Scarbrough Stakes in a thrilling finish at Doncaster yesterday.

The four-year-old son of Equiano raced in mid-division as El Astronaute (Approve) showed his usual early speed to lead the field of seven. As they neared the finish, runners from the back came through to take it up, first among them was Queens Gift (Canford Cliffs), followed by Equilateral then Duke Of Firenze (Pivotal). Queens Gift dug in when Equilateral got to her, but the latter pulled out extra in the final strides to win by a head. Duke Of Firenze was a length and a quarter further back in third.

A winner at two and three, Equilateral is steadily improving and, although he has disappointed at times, he ran well when third in the Listed Cammidge Trophy and second in the Gr.3 Palace House Stakes this term.

A Juddmonte homebred, he is out of the unraced Tarentaise (Oasis Dream), who is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free winner and sire Cityscape (Selkirk), the Gr.2 Temple Stakes winner and multiple Gr.1-placed sire Bated Breath (Dansili) and the Listed Snowdrop Stakes-placed Scuffle (Daylami; dam of the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes winner and Gr.1 St Leger favourite Logician).

Massila was keen early on when tracking the leaders, although the pace was decent. She soon settled in a share of third as Days Dream (Martaline) opened up a clear advantage. Massila travelled to the front down the back straight and, as they turned for home, she held a five-length advantage. She popped the final two flights and cruised home with Clement Lefebvre looking around for any sign of the opposition. Fleche Rouge (Crillon) was best of the rest, three lengths ahead of Fragil Has (Rail Link).

Bred by Haras des Sablonnets and Gabriel Leenders, Massila is out of the winner My Fair Lady (Poliglote), who is a half-sister to the winner Royale Majesty (Nikos; dam of the Gr.2 Prix Georges Courtois winner and Gr.1-placed Roi Mage). This is the family of the dual Gr.2 and Gr.3 Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase winner Le Prezien (Blue Bresil).

Thunder keeps rollingIt has been a great year for first season sires, with the top five

stallions on www.stallionguide.com’s list of leading first crop sires responsible for no fewer than 89 individual winners in

Europe between them to the start of this week. Adding 20 individual winners to that total is Night Of Thunder,

who stands at Dalham Hall Stud, Newmarket. His tally of winners includes 27 successes to date, for a strike rate of 58 per cent winners to runners, as well as four Stakes horses. That list is headed by the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes heroine Under The Stars, who went on to finish a decent fourth in the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes at York last month.

August saw Night Of Thunder register another Stakes victory, courtesy of the colt Thunderous, trained by Mark Johnston to land the Listed Denford Stakes at Newbury on 17th August, his third victory from as many starts. His paternal half-brother Sun Power finished third in that contest for Richard Hannon, having already finished runner-up in the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes on the same card as Under The Stars’ victory at Ascot, after finishing fourth in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Earlier in the month, the French-bred Thunderspeed finished third in the Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at Vichy over 1400m, having been selected as EBN’s French Maiden Winner of the Week after getting off the mark in early July at Deauville.

Night Of Thunder is also responsible for Silent Night, a hat-trick scorer in Sweden, and the dual winners Keep Busy and Path Of Thunder.

Night Of Thunder was himself a smart juvenile performer. The son of Dubawi did not debut until October for Richard Hannon Snr, but made a huge impression when skipping clear by six lengths in a maiden auction over 6f at Goodwood for owner Saeed Manana. He ran just once more at two, scoring in the Listed Doncaster Stakes by an easy three lengths.

Back in action the following season in the care of Richard Hannon Jnr, Night Of Thunder had his first taste of the rivalry that would continue throughout this Classic season, finishing runner-up to Kingman in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes.

Few would have expected the tables to be turned in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas, but Night Of Thunder swooped late to land the Classic spoils, defeating Kingman and the subsequent Gr.1 Derby

victor Australia in a close finish, with one of the highest-rated fields for the first colts’ Classic in arrears.

Night Of Thunder went on to be runner-up to Kingman again in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes, with Gr.1 winner and fellow first season sire Outstrip in third, before finishing third in the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin to Charm Spirit, who also beat Night Of Thunder into second in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on his final start of the season. Night Of Thunder returned to the races at four, triumphing in the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes over a typically strong field.

He retired to stand at Kildangan Stud in Ireland, where he spent two seasons before transferring to join his illustrious sire on the roster at Dalham Hall Stud.

Loose Chippings (Rock Of Gibraltar) registered his first win at the 26th attempt, giving jockey Gabriele Malune and trainer Ivan Furtado the first leg of a double at Laytown. He is out of the Key Of Luck mare Karjera, who is a full-sister to the Listed Rochestown Stakes winner Akanti and the Gr.3 Brownstown Stakes, Gr.3 Round Tower Stakes and Gr.3 International Stakes-placed Lock And Key. The second dam, the winner Lock’s Heath (Topsider), is a half-sister to the US winner Dream Regally (Vice Regent; dam of the Stakes winner and Gr.3-placed Lacie Girl). The third dam is the Stakes winner and Gr.3-placed Lock’s Dream (Youth).

Karjera has a yearling colt by Hot Streak, catalogued as Lot 733 at the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale, and a filly foal by Alhebayeb.

The filly Ifrachy (Iffraaj), who found the highly promising Wootton’s Colt (Wootton Bassett) just too good on her debut, strolled home clear of the colt Cima Emergency (Canford Cliffs) and is expected to step up to Stakes level sooner or later. Her dam Killachy Loose (Kyllachy) won the Gr.3 Premio Sergio Cumani and the Listed Premio Nogara and finished in the first three in seven more Stakes races from two to four. Her first foal, the lightly-raced three-year-old filly Exceed Loose (Exceed And Excel), won twice and was third in the Listed Premio Nogara. The second dam, Vettori Loose (Vettori), won seven races and produced four other winners, including the Stakes-placed Vettori Rules (Aussie Rules). The third dam, Dan Loose (Danehill), returned six winners, headed by Dan Loose Daughter (Sakhee), who won the Listed Premio Baggio.
