2008 Engineering Conference Schedule

Monday, March 3, 2008 Opening Remarks - Host AMCA’s Engineering Standards Committee Chair, John Magill, Howden Buffalo, Inc.

Impeller Fatigue Assessment Using an S-N Approach Sam Orr, Howden Technology Weld fatigue; an examination of the present and future methods of predicting weld fatigue life of fan impellers using FEA.

Fan Performance and Time John Cermak, Acme Engineering and Manufacturing A discussion of data acquisition systems and digitized sampling of signals to obtain meaningful data to represent both air and sound performance.

Comparison of Fan Field Testing Methods Vern Martin, Flowcare Engineering, Inc. A direct comparison of AMCA 803 and ASME PTC 11 methods of flow measurement will be presented for two double inlet induced draft fans at a coal fired power plant.

The Thrust of ANSI/AMCA 230-07 Dick Aynsley, Big Ass Fan Co. The new ANSI/AMCA 230-07 rates circulating fans by the thrust force they develop. Tests indicated that the equation for calculating flow rate from fan thrust significantly overestimated the flow rate of circulating fans.

Induced Flow Fans, MOT, CRP - How We Got There? Bob Valbracht, Loren Cook Co. A review of the new test standard and Certified Ratings Program for Induced Flow Fans.

Vibration Measurement Systems and Guidelines for Centrifugal Fans - A Field Perspective Bob Shannon, Howden Buffalo, Inc. A discussion of field vibration measurements, recommended transducers systems (disadvantages and advantages), and typical guidelines for practical, in-situ applications.

System Effects of Damper Location Next to a Louver and After an Elbow Bob Van Becelaere, Ruskin Company This presentation will cover the pressure drop required with a louver damper combination, where the damper is located at different points away from the louver.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008 AMCA International’s Air Control Division Update Dane Carey, NCA Manufacturing

Patents, Copyrights and Trade Secrets: Intellectual Property of Air Movement Technology Stephen Mick, Robinson Industries, Inc. This presentation will review developments in the air movement field as described in utility patents and discusses intellectual property issues that affect the fan industry. It presents examples of industrial fan inventions to lay a foundation for a discussion of intellectual property principles.

Pressure Against Flowrate - Is the Square Law true? W.T.W Cory, Cory Consultancy For many years we have lived with the statement that the system resistance is proportional to the flowrate squared; i.e., that it is a quadratic relation- ship. While this is always true for small changes in the flow, its shortcomings are beginning to be realized in an era of inverters and other methods of wide ranging speed control.

Analytical Model for Axial Fan Performance Rating Rad Ganesh and Daniel Khalitov, Twin City Fan Companies Ltd. This paper covers research into methods to reduce the testing requirements where the sizes are not geometrically similar and multiple variables are changed.

Treatment of Tonal Sound in the Develop- ment of Fan Sound Ratings Tim Mathson, Greenheck Fan Co. This paper will discuss proper use of AMCA 301 based on test data as well as possible future enhancements to this standard.

ANSI/AMCA 210/ASHRAE 51: Changes and Their Impact (a panel discussion) John Cermak, Mark Stevens, Tim Mathson

AMCA International Headquarters Laboratory - New and Improved, a Status Report Mark Stevens, AMCA International, Inc.
