ECE Work in Thrust Areas The ECE Deptt has been working mainly in 3 areas of IT: Emerging Communication Technologies, Signal Processing and Digital Design and VLSI as given below. 1.Emerging Communication Technologies:In the department work has been done on all four major components of a wireless communication system: transmitter, receiver, communication channel and antenna. The requirements of future 4G communication systemsare expected to be met by Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)and Multiple-Input–Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Improved algorithms for 4G transmitters and receivers have been developed. Main thrust of the above work has been improving Transmitter and Receiver designs so that less power is required to be transmitted. This will reduce RFI to other users, reduce biological hazard and also improve compatibility with other systems. Similarly improved antenna designs based on metamaterialsare given so that they can give optimum performance even with lesser received signal strength. Improved channel models are given, this helps in design of optimum signal processing and modulationtechniques at the transmitter. Work has also been done to improve efficiency and bandwidth of Travelling Wave Tube (TWT) and Gyro-TWTs used in satellite communication and for electronic warfare. Two funded projects completed by the Deptt. are: MODROBS (AICTE, Rs 10 Lakh), and ISRO( Narrow band interference reduction in navigation system, Rs 5.77 Lakh). Papers Published: International Journals: 50, International Conferences: 55, National Conferences: 07, Total papers published: 112. High Impact Factor papers: 20 Faculty members working: 21, Research scholars, 5; PG students, 19. 2.Signal Processing: Signal processing is a highly dynamic and far-reaching field. In the department, work is going on in the areas: Brain-computer interface, Improveddevice design, Digital image processing,Speech processing and Video signal processing. In the Brain Computer Interface developed for disabled personnel, asignal from EEG isused to provide an alternative channel for severely disabled personnel for communicating with the external world. A new Operational Amplifier design has been developed for improved industrial electronic systems and biomedical electronics. Other work done include speech processing algorithms for 4G and next generation mobile communication and voice over internet protocol (VOIP) services. Work is also going on developing fast algorithms for real time signaland low order Digital IIR Filters with linear phase characteristics which will improve the quality of video communication. The Department has completed one AICTE sponsored RPS projectentitled “Development of IP Core for Real time audio Video Surveillance System” for Rs. 5 Lakh in this area. Papers Published: International Journals: 28, National Journals: 1, International Conferences: 36, National Conferences: 2, High Impact Factor papers: 2. Faculty Members working: 18, Research Scholars: 5, PG Students: 9. 3. Digital Systems and VLSI: In the area of Digital Systems, our approach has been more development oriented using commercial software. We have software suites like Mentor Graphics IC station, Cadence, Xilinx ISE 10.1, ATLAS, and Coventor. Our students get hands-on training on the above
