Food price increase hits hard
NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]
DUE to the high price of food, people areshifting to cheaper brands which have
also become unaffordable, saidPietermaritzburg Agency for CommunitySocial Action (PACSA) Julie Smith.
PACSA was delivering their report at arecent media briefing after they hadconducted a survey (Food Barometer) on theprices of food.
The report back highlighted the kinds offood that are increasing astronomically, leading families to opt for the cheapestbrands or to change their householdmenus.
PACSA’s Food Barometer revealed that 32foods, which form the basics in theshopping trolley’s of the poor working classhouseholds inPietermaritzburg, has increasedfrom R1509.34 to R1640.05 in September2014.
“We are seeing that households with
sevenmembersormoreare spendingbetweenR600 and R1000 a month on food, whichmeans they cannot afford to buy a basicbasket of food every month withsubstantial negative implications fordignity, health and well being,” said Smith.
“Our findings suggest that people arenot eating enough food and the food whichthey are able to afford is extremely deficient innutrients.
“This is having a serious impact on healthand well being and is exacerbating povertyinequality and resulting in pooreducation, health economic and productivityoutcomes.
The period of relative dietary diversitywhere households are able to eat relativelybalanced meal has declined from three weekslast year to two weeks this year.
“This means that for every two out offour weeks, households are eating anextremely limited diet, mostly of starches, salt, sugar and fat.
“Poor households are responding tohigh food prices by dropping certain foodsoff the plate or eating less. Foods that are offthe plate are red meat, fresh milk, maasand cheese.
“The high cost of maize meal, which nowretails at slightly more than rice, is puttingenormous pressures on householdsbecause maize meal is the staple starch,” saidSmith.

5Nersa’s 12% set toaffect affordabilityNQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]
THE Pietermaritzburg Agencyfor Community Social Action(Pacsa) believes that the
National Energy Regulator (Nersa)decision to allow for Eskom’s 12.7%tariff increase for the 2015/2016term will have a devastating impactontheworkingclassandpoorhouse-holds.
Nersa announced the decisionearlier this month.
Pacsa said that the increase willerode any wage victories strikingworkers have won within the pastyear.
Pacsa’s research and advocacyofficer, Julie Smith, said that theNersa increase will mean that thehigh tariffs Eskom will pass ontomunicipalities will make electricitymore unaffordable.
“Traditionally, profits on electric-ity revenue were about 15% - 18%,asmunicipalitiesusedtoaddontheirown percentage increases onto thebaselineEskomtariff.Municipalitiesusedthisextrarevenuetofundmanyof theirmunicipal servicesandothermunicipal activities.
“This means that municipalitiesno longer have the extra revenue tobeabletofundsomeoftheirprocess-es. So the high Eskom tariffs have amassive impact on municipal
revenues and may result in signifi-cant financial shortfalls whichimpact on the services they canprovide their citizens,” said Smith.
For the Pietermaritzburg work-ingclassandpoorhouseholds,Smithsaid that the increasewill force theirmonthly electricity expenses toincrease by aminimumof R59.14 toR525 per month.
“Eskom’s increases will erodeany wage victories striking workershavewon.High electricity tariffs area direct threat to the ability ofworking class households to securesufficient and nutritious food. It willresult inmassive protests across thecountry, as ordinary people will beforced to fight to put food on theirtables,” said Smith.
Should municipalities increasetheir tariffs to match Nersa’s 12%increase for Eskom, the low-income
householdswillbattletoaffordnutri-tious food for their families.
Thewayourneo-liberaleconomyis structured, means that other es-sential non-negotiable paymentscome before food, stated Smith.
She said this includes expensessuch as transport costs, electricity, which is mainly used for cookingfood, burial insurance, furniture re-payments, education costs and wa-ter.
“When households are forced tomake payments on other essentialand non-negotiable expenses, wherecredit controlanddebtcollec-tion is ruthless, there is not a choice;households are forced to modifywhere they can manoeuvre, wheretheyhavecontrolandthis is typicallyfood. Food is typically one of the fewexpenses which low-income house-holdsareabletocontrolandbecause
ofthis,othernon-negotiableexpens-es take precedent,” said Smith.
Tosaveelectricity,Smithsaidthata lot of households have stoppedcooking food which takes longer toprepare, such as raw sugar beansand samp.
However, she said that thesituationmay vastly improve shouldNersa intervene to make sure thatthe municipal tariffs are restruc-tured to ensure affordability.
“Unless Nersa intervenes at mu-nicipal level to ensure that tariffs arerestructured for affordability at lowconsumption volumes, and that freebasic electricity volumes areincreased substantially and provid-ed to all low-income households, particularly households in Pieter-maritzburg on prepaid meters whoare currently excluded, then the in-creases must be resisted.”
The NationalEnergy Regulator (Nersa)recently announced thatEskom’s2015/2016tariff increasewill be 12.7%.PHOTO:SUPPLIED

A local woman from Montrose has startedasocialmediaawarenesscampaignonmalebreast cancer, after her uncle succumbed tothe disease in July this year.
Yeshni Sookraj urged all men to getscreened for breast cancer, just as womendo.
“Tobehonest, Ihadnotheardaboutmalebreast cancer before my uncle, Anesh, wasdiagnosed in 2012. He was diagnosed in2012when his GP discovered a lump on hisbreast and sent him for an X-ray. A biopsywas performed and staging followed.
“We then found out that the he had stagefourmalebreastcanceramonthlater.Aneshunderwent aggressive chemo therapy foroverayearandahalfandthenopted fororalchemo fora fewmonths.HepassedawayonJuly 7 2014, at the age of 46,” said Sookraj.
She believes that there should be moreawareness of male breast cancer becausemostmenhavenotevenheardof thediseaseand the general public is not well informed.
“Menwhodoknowmayfeelembarrassedto talk about it, so there is a need to spreadawareness and raise a flag so that men feelcomfortable to start talking about it. Thereis definitely a stereotype around breastcancer as many people think that only

WITH October being breastcancer awarenessmonth, NOKULUNGA
NGOBESE spoke to breastcancer survivor AngieMthiyane who, after eightmonths of chemotherapytreatment, is growingstronger each day.
Mthiyane (39) was diag-nosedwithbreast cancer in2012. Despite feeling athrobbing pain in her leftbreast, she had to fight hardforherdiagnosisasdoctorsdidnot detect anything.
“I lovemyhealth,soImakesurethat I visit doctors regularly. When Ifelt a throbbing pain under my leftbreast, I immediately knew thatsomething was wrong. I went to theclinic and I was referred to anotherhospital where doctors did notdiscover anything. I had to fight to bereferred to another hospital and Iinsisted that they do an ultra sound. That’s when I discovered that thecancer was actually in my right
breast, not myleft. Although I was shocked, I wasrelievedthatat least itwasdiscoveredataveryearlystageasitwasinits firststage.”
Mthiyane said immediately afterthe discovery, they had to remove alump fromher breast and she under-
went chemotherapy treat-ment.“Chemotherapyisthemost
difficult stage for a cancersufferer as the process needs
support, strength, courage andperseverance. It is also strenuous tothe body. I attended radiation treat-mentsfortwomonthsinhospital,andnow I go for check ups every threemonths. The doctors had predictedthat my treatment would last fiveyears, but through the support frommy family, colleagues, congregationand friends, it lasted only three
years,” she said. She said that the main problem
that cancer sufferers experience isacceptance, asmostof themdiewhileon chemotherapy treatment or im-mediately after because they losehope.
“Once it has been detected, thenext thing is toaccept thatGodwill bewith you all the way. Anotherimportantthingiswatchingyourdiet.Lastly, you must follow your doctor’sorders and do not use any othermedication that is not prescribed byyour doctor while on treatment.”
Since being diagnosed, she hasbecome a vegetarian and drinks onlywater. Mthiyane said that it isimportant for every woman to haveregular check-ups as cancer canaffect anyone, irrespective of age.
“Most people die because they aretoo scared to confront the truth. It isnot only women, but we have thesame problem with men who areafraid to go for check ups.
“If there is something that you feelis strange, check with your doctor.Early detection allows for earlytreatment.”
Mthiyane said that her source ofinspiration is knowing that there isGod, gym, attending support groupsand living a stress free life.
She said while more people arediagnosed with cancer, there is stillthat stigma of bewitchment, particu-larly among black communities.
“Being diagnosed with cancerdoes not mean the end of the world.Ifsomeonehasdiedfromit, itdoesnotmean the same will happen to you.Lastly, live a healthy life.”

tion around thebreast area shouldbe done on a regu-lar basis and iflumps are found, the person shouldsee their doctor fora clinical examina-tion immediately.
“My experiencewith male breastcancer has taughtme thatpeoplecan-not take theirhealth for granted.Anesh was diag-nosed when hiscancer had pro-gressed to stagefour. It could havebeen detectedearlier,” she said.
To spreadawareness,Sookraj has sincestarted Facebookand Twitter socialmedia pages. Shesaid that thesesocial media pageswill serve as aneducational plat-form where mencan learn moreabout male breastcancer.
“I encourage thepublic to join thesepages to helpspread awareness.Thedisease clearlyis under-diag-nosed,” she said.

Wishing matrics all the bestI WOULD like to wish the matricclass of 2014 all the best in theirfinal examination. Iwant them tothink critically of all the sacrificesthat they have made up until thistime.
They have come across hard-ships and difficulties throughouttheir journeyandnowit’s timeforthemtoshowcasetheirbrilliance.
Iwant themtoknowthat thereare people who will bad mouththem as they write, people whowill give them unnecessarypressureby telling themthat theywill be expecting to see them innewspapers, but theymust focuson what they can do, and do it ina marvellous way.
Above all, theymust pray on adaily basis that the Almighty Godprotect and guide them through-

Anactivememberof theMsunduziDisabledClub (MDC), Dlaziphi Luthuli recentlydemonstrated her capability as a wheelchairbound racer to her friends and athleticsfollowers when she won the race in Tham-boville, near Glenwood.
She expressed her happiness in being insports and said that her mission is to becomea champion in Africa and in the world.
Luthuli said that she fell in love withwheelchair sport (athletics) in 2012 and shehas never looked back.
Luthuli said that disabled people are alsohumanbeingsandneedtobetreatedasnormalmembers of society, but they also need to keepthemselves active in their lives.
She encouraged more disabled athletes tocomeonboard andofficially joinMDC in orderto grow and raisemore awareness in disabledsport.
“Weall knowthechallenges facedbypeopleinmycondition, butwealsoneedtogooutthereand be active in our communities andespecially take part in sports.
“Tositaloneand feel sorry foryourself isnotgoing to help. Go out there, take part in sportsand keep healthy and fit,” said Luthuli.
She took part in the ladies run and turnedit into her own event.
She led the pack from the early stages of the5km race, stayed in the front all the way andwon comfortably.
The Cato Ridge based athlete is already a
provincial andnational champion in the 10kmand 21.1km events.
“It’s a bit of an achievement, but I will onlyrest or be satisfied when I become the worldchamp in those races or at least bring amedalhome from the Olympics or CommonwealthGames.
“My other big dream is to run a ComradesMarathon and finish it,” said Luthuli.
Luthulisaidthat localwheelchairsportscango far andbe taken to thenext level by the localclub, despite challenges.
“In most cases, we race with the wrongwheelchairs for this sport. We are desperatelyin need of at least three or four for our club.Wedon’tmindsharingandhaveturnswhenwearecompeting or training.
“The KZN Department of Sports andRecreation always comes on board to help us,like paying for our transportwhenwe travel toprovincial and national events. But they can’tdo everything for us.
“We are pleading with business people outthere around the Mgungundlovu District toplease extend a helping hand,” said Luthuli.
Department of Sports and RecreationUmgungundlovu district manager, Busi Nko-mo, said that theMDC is the best example thatdisabled people can also stay active in sportsand keep fit.
Nkomo also said that athletes must beencouraged to not only look to one code ofsport.
“We need to encourage them to take part insports, but we must also remember that therearealotoftypesofsportoutthere,”saidNkomo.- Jerry Barnes.

THIS month Honda celebrates the 40thanniversary of its Gold Wing touring-stylemotorcycle with the announcement of a“birthday edition” Wing. That’s a limitednumber and some will reach South Africanshowrooms.
Just five years after producing its firstsuperbikein1969,thecelebratedCB750Hon-da once again thought “out of the box” bycreating the first long-distance touring bike -the GL1000 Gold Wing.
It boasted shaft drive, a water-cooled flatfour engine, disc brakes all around, a touringbike that set standardsof comfort andsophis-tication previously unheard of.
Factor in a low centre-of-gravity 19-litrefuel tank, the bike offered a new twist to thedefinition of high-speed motorcycle touring.
The bike had a relaxed feel about it, at120km/h the motor loped along at only4000rpm.
From standstill a 400m sprint saw a timeof around 13 seconds, putting the bike in thesame class as the rapid Kawasaki 750 Tripleand even a Laverda Jota.
Many owners fitted additional touringequipmentsuchaspanniersandheftyfairingswith built-in sound systems – theWingwouldstill managed to pull like a locomotive.
Salessuccesscameeasilybut the factory in
Japan was considered too small to handleserious production numbers so, in 1981, theplantwasmoved lock, stock and barrel to theMarysville Motorcycle plant in Ohio, in theU.S.
Interestingly, sales from 1979 to 1999surpassed a million, with engine sizes alsoincreasing along theway, ie: 1100cc, 1200cc,1500cc (six cylinders for 1988).
In 2001 the GL 1800 came into being – thefirst newmodel in 13 years. Itwas fuel-inject-ed but a considerably lightermachine thanksto an all-aluminium frame. Anti-lock brakeswere optional; the engine, incidentallydeveloped a car-like 97kW.SpecificationsHonda Gold Wing 40th anniversary modelEngine: liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 12-valveSOHC, flat 6, 1832ccPower: 87kW/167Nm, Electronic fuel injec-tionFuel tank: 25 litresGears: five-speed, shaft driveWheelbase: 1690mmGround clearance: 125mmSeat height: 740mmKerb weight: 413kg (421kg air-bag version)Wheelstyres: (F) 18” 130/70; (R) 16” 180/60Brakes: linked, ABSPrice: TBA — Wheels24.

Coaches failing
THEGAME
THE challenge for South African footballtechnicians is huge.
Football, particularly in Europe, SouthAmerica and Asia, is developing at an incredi-ble speed.
People are working very hard to improvetechnical levels of their football.
There are new discoveries every day intechnical, tactical, psychological and physicalaspects.
We waste too much energy focusing oncriticising others instead of researching andstudying our game.
Presently, everything thatwe teach is basedon informationdeveloped in foreigncountries.
We lack in discovering things for ourselves. We are fond of copying others without evenchecking the relevancy of the information.
Briefly, South African football coaches arefailing the local game. Clive Barker, the 1996NationsCupcoach, is the only football coach tohave won a major trophy outside our country. The rest of us spend toomuch time on petty is-sues instead of developing the game.
There are many coaches with various Safacoaching certificates that are hanging in thewalls of their living rooms.
The work of South African coaches shouldbe reflected in footballers competing in biggerEuropean leagues. It is a fact that only StevenPienaarandThulaniSereroplayatadecentlev-el. The problem is that very few guys are doingthe actual coaching.
Too many of us see football as an easy wayto fame and fortune. People are not preparedto make sacrifices in improving their craft.
We need to focus on important thingsif South Africa is to produce coaches and
players good enough for export market.Medical practitionersandotherprofession-
als are always being scouted by rich westernnations.
Let us focus more on improving our craftthrough studying and research.
Unzima lo mthwalo!
