A PUBLICATION OF LUTHER HOME OF MERCY, WILLISTON, OHIO

VOLUME LXXXI SUMMER 2013 NUMBER 2

Great is Thy FaithfulnessWell there I was, thinking everything was going along

just fine; and would probably stay that way for a while.

Then I attended a legal update on The Affordable Care

Act, followed by another meeting on Sequestration and

the Medicaid Budget. “Dear Lord,” I thought, “could we

just start this over, go back to a simpler time; and was it

ever like this for Pastor Schleicher?”

We tend, sometimes, to think of the past as a “sim-

pler” and less challenging time; but records speak clear-

ly of formidable barriers overcome by those who have

gone before. In fact, Pastor Max and Pastor Edmund

Schleicher were tested many times to the edge of endur-

ance; but, thankfully, remained faithful, persistent, and

mission-driven to establish and advance the ministry of

Luther Home of Mercy through two generations.

An old song book published by Edwin O. Excell, Re-

vivalist song leader for Rev. Sam Jones, features a little

known but instructive piece written by “E. O.” himself. The

work is titled The Model Church; and goes like this:

“Well, wife, I’ve found The Model Church,

And worship’d there today;

It made me think of good old times,

Before my hair was gray…”

The song continues, reflecting on the friendliness of the people, the spirit of their sing-

ing, the old songs, the old message. Though written more than a hundred years ago, the

words reveal a couple of enduring lessons:

† That even in the good old days, people longed for the good old days;

† And their longings were comforted by Jesus, the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

…Pastor Don Wukotich

Tree of Service Honoring StaffA beautiful “Tree Of Service”

is hanging on the wall in the Ad-

ministrative Building, honoring

120 staff members who have

served Luther Home for 20 years

or more. The plaque under the

tree reads “In Honor of all employ-

ees for their service to others day by

day and all through the night with

special recognition of those having

provided twenty and more years of

devoted service in the ministry of

Luther Home of Mercy. Therefore,

be steadfast, immovable, always

abounding in the work of the Lord

knowing that your toil is not in vain

in the Lord.”

Last year our Luther Home of Mercy (LHM) Board of Directors and the Filling Memorial Home of Mercy (FMHM) Board of Directors authorized formation of a Joint Committee to discuss whether a closer working relationship would be helpful to both ministries. Comprised of four representatives of each Board, the Joint Committee has met monthly for nearly a year. Through the course of these meetings, it has become clear that:

• LHM and FMHM are well developed, highly respected and important ministries of the Church.

• While both ministries value their individual identities, LHM and FMHM appreciate a long history of working together to support one another in mission.

• This cooperative spirit has proven especially helpful to both ministries in confronting program challenges.

• Future challenges are expected to require more intentional collaboration to sustain and advance these vital ministries.

Given the above, our Joint Committee explored a variety of models aimed at bringing our organiza-tions closer together without loss of identity to either LHM or FMHM. In order to accomplish this objec-tive, the Committee recommended the following for Board consideration:

• That LHM and FMHM jointly establish a new organization titled: Lutheran Ministries of Mercy (LMM).

• That LMM serve as parent to the two legacy organizations, LHM and FMHM, both of which would continue – preserving respective identities together with existing LHM and FMHM Foundations, licenses, certifications, contracts.

• That practical administrative functions including governance and executive leader ship be consolidated under LMM.

The above recommendations were approved by our LHM Board of Directors on February 19, 2013; and, subsequently, endorsed by Delegates in attendance at our LHM Annual Meeting on April 18, 2013.

In follow-up to the above actions, additional meetings are planned to provide opportunity for discussion; and, subject to approval of our LHM Association of Congregations, sup-port for moving forward to establish Lutheran Ministries of Mercy. The re-spective Boards of LHM and FMHM understand that the future will test and challenge all available resources; and, therefore, we both appreciate the advantage of working together with a partner in ministry.

One of our goals at Luther Home is to provide meaningful activities that our residents enjoy and that will enrich their lives. Each of our cottages on campus has one or two activity aides who together with supervisors, other staff members, and the residents themselves plan these activities.

Popular on-campus events include ““Movie Nights,” birthday and theme parties, Spa Days (relaxing manicures and pedicures while listening to soft music and aroma therapy), swimming, exercise, music groups, story time, .writing letters to family members and friends, and cooking groups. Both outdoor and indoor games/sports and crafts are also popular, especially on weekends.

Off-campus trips are planned as often as possible and include trips to the zoo, Cedar Point, Disney on Ice, the circus, Mud Hens games, UT basketball games, out to eat, and other places of interest.

As one of our activity aides says…relationship building & establishing a rapport with the residents is the key to becoming a successful activity aid. Observing facial expressions, body gestures, and various verbal cues lets them know if the resident is enjoying the activity or getting any benefit from it.

The activity aides along with staff members in all cottages try to see that all residents get involved in activities that are meaningful, fulfilling, and interesting.

Resident Activities

Mashell Singleton, Cottage 11, helps Betsy make one of her favorite dishes…pizza!

Yvonne Copeland & Terri McCrosky make sure the residents in Cottage 6A have plenty of activities to take part in – they took a few minutes to relax with Crystal and Joe.

Kim Cole works with residents in Cottages 9 & 10…here she and Meghan are painting sun-catchers.

Sherrill enjoys having her nails

done by Kasey Purtee & Katie

Wojonowski in Cottage 6B.

In Cottage 2, Carolina Chavez, works

one-on-one with Linda on color

identification.

Jill Skaggs and Scott are hoping these feeders attract birds to Cottage 3.

Helping OthersPatti’s hair was getting long, and she decided that

she would like to have shorter hair. So a group of

ladies from her cottage went to a local hair salon

and got their hair cut. Since Patti’s hair was so long

and she had a lot cut off, the stylist asked if she was

interested in donating her hair to help children.

Patti agreed and her beautiful brown hair was do-

nated to “Locks of Love” which provides hairpieces

to financially disadvantaged children under age 21

suffering from long-term medical hair loss from

any diagnosis. Patti was thrilled that her hair was

going to help children!

Great Survey ResultsEvery once in a while you might get to see a baseball

game where there is a “No-hitter” or even more rare the “Perfect Game”. Well that is about what it feels like when a group of surveyors from the Ohio Department of Health, come to Luther Home of Mercy and tell us, after spending 4 days here……”No Citations”. That’s right ZERO, NONE, GOOSE EGGS … A SHUT OUT!!!!! That is what it feels like, but it really isn’t the same. There are about 400 regulations in the federal register that LHM must follow as a Medicaid provider and the survey represents a snapshot of life over the four days that the surveyors are present. These are just some of the things that they review….

• ALL Major Incidents over the past year (over 100)

• The past 4 months of every resident’s UIRs (over 1500)

• The plans and data and information on 10% of our resident sample

• A building inspection of every building on campus

• A visit to every day program site for those residents in the sample.

• Follow up discussions with family members of the sample as deemed needed.

• And medication administration observations and meal observations in every building.

A big THANK YOU to all of our staff members who made this happen!

many residents…but, it was time for a face lift! The Cottage

Supervisors and members of our Maintenance Department

under the direction of Supervisor Denise Hennan, took on

this task. A fresh coat of paint was put on the living room

walls, hallways, and indi-

vidual bedrooms. Glow-in-

the-dark sensory stimulation

lights have been placed on ceilings and walls. The LHM logo has

been placed on the wall along with the LHM core values through-

out the hallways. Room numbers and first names of residents are

beautifully displayed near the door to each room. Resident rooms

are slowly being decorated with colorful bedspreads, new curtains,

and fun decals on the walls. It has been a gradual process, but well

worth the effort for residents, staff, and family members.

In appreciation for a fantastic survey, staff members were treated to a delicious box lunch….Christina Moffitt,

Megan Davie, and Carol Bowles pick up their lunches.
