Caution: Please read the entire installation section carefully prior tostarting installation.

1.1 Unpacking

Unpack the instrument carefully. Make sure all compo-nents have been removed from the packing material.Inspect all components for damage. Report any concealeddamage to the carrier within 24 hours. Check the contentsof the packing slip and report any discrepancies to thefactory. Check the nameplate model number to be sure itagrees with the packing slip and purchase order. Checkand record the serial number for future reference whenordering parts.

1.2 Mounting

1.2.1 Unit Mounting Location

The level transmitter should be mounted in a location thatpermits easy access for maintenance. Avoid locations thatare exposed to direct sunlight, flooding, high levels ofradiated electromagnetic interference, and excessivevibration or shock.

Model 350/351 sensors must be mounted directly over thematerial to be measured. This may be accomplished withthe NPT mounting.

Proper mounting and wiring of this ultrasonic unit is ofutmost importance. Accuracy can be adversely affected ifthe sensor is mounted off axis, or where obstacles existbetween the sensor face and the liquid surface.

NOTE: The 350/351 requires a dead zone distance between thebottom of the sensor and the maximum level of material to bemeasured. Minimum dead zone = 12 inches (305 mm).Maximum dead zone should be limited to about 10 ft(3 meters) as this blanking distance is extended at theexpense of the useful span over which the instrumentoperates satisfactorily. At temperatures greater than +140° F(+60° C) the minimum dead zone is extended to 18 inches(457 mm).

1.2.2 General Unit Mounting Requirements

1. Make sure that there are no obstructions between the faceof the sensor and the liquid level. Ultrasonic energy radi-ates from the sensor face in a cone-shaped beam of approx-imately 12° width (diameter). Any object within the sig-nal's path may produce an echo that can mask the trueecho returned by the liquid surface.

2. Position the sensor so that the radiating surface or sensorface is exactly parallel to the target surface. This will pro-vide the strongest return signals and enhance the reliabilityof the 350/351.

3. In applications where the material level can reach the topof the tank, the sensor portion of the unit must be mount-ed in a short, flanged standpipe. The diameter of thestandpipe should be at least 8 inches (203 mm) and itslength should be limited to 12 inches (305 mm). Refer toFigure 2.

4. Avoid installing the sensor in tank top openings thatexhaust heated air or vapors. The boundaries between thevapors and the outside air often represent acoustic imped-ance gradients that can cause troublesome sound reflec-tions. In those installations, the sensor should be mountedwell away from the opening inside the tank, or in a stand-pipe as illustrated here. Refer to Figure 3.

1.2.3 Remote Transmitter Mounting Procedure

Remote mount Model 351 transmitters should be mountedin a location that permits easy access for maintenance.Avoid locations that are exposed to direct sunlight, flood-ing, high levels of radiated electromagnetic interference, and excessive vibration or shock.

1. Mount the enclosure to a wall or flat surface using appro-priate screws or bolts. A remote mounting bracket is avail-able from the factory, if required. Refer to mounting holepattern as shown in the dimensional drawing on page 18.

2. Provide watertight seals for all wiring entrances into theenclosure.

3. Install conduit for power and control wiring. Be sureall connections to the enclosure maintain the properNEMA rating.

4. Be sure to replace housing cover before proceeding tosensor mounting.

1.2.4 Sensor Mounting Procedure

NOTE: Be sure the sensor location meets the requirements discussedunder Section 1.2.2, General Unit Mounting Requirements.

1. Position sensor over the tank opening. Install the 3⁄4" NPTor 2" NPT sensor in the tank fitting, flange, or mountwith an optional mounting bracket. Pipe thread com-pound is recommended on stainless steel sensors.

Caution: Unit should only be hand-tightened into the process con-nection. The wrench flats should only be used whenremoving the unit. Overtightening will cause transducererrors and will void the warranty.

1.2.4.1 Remote Sensor Cabling

1. Remote mount Model 351 units require installation ofa watertight conduit from the sensor to the transmitterenclosure.

2. Carefully pull the coaxial cable and temperature cableattached to the sensor through the conduit to the transmitter.

Caution: Avoid excessive twisting of both the sensor and tempera-ture cables.

NOTE: In high humidity applications, it is recommended that the sen-sor wiring be completely immersed in an insulating compoundwhere the conduit connects to the sensor. (3M #4441 GellaRe-enterable Encapsulating Compound or equivalent).

1.3 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)Handling Procedure

Magnetrol’s electronic instruments are manufactured tothe highest quality standards. These instruments utilizeelectronic components which may be damaged by staticelectricity present in most work environments. The follow-ing steps are recommended to reduce the risk of compo-nent failure due to electrostatic discharge:

1. Ship and store circuit boards in anti-static bags. If an anti-static bag is not available, wrap board in aluminum foil.Do not place boards on foam packing materials.

2. Use a grounding wrist strap when installing and removingcircuit boards. A grounded workstation is also recommended.

3. Handle printed circuit boards only by the edges. Do nottouch components or connector pins.

4. Ensure that all electrical connections are completely madeand none are partial or floating. Ground all equipment to agood, earth ground.

2.4 Mode of Operation

2.4.1 Height or Distance Selection

The Model 350/351 allows the user to choose the MODEof Operation, HEIGHT, (HGT ) or DISTANCE (DIST). Thischoice is made in a special SET-UP menu which is accessedby pressing the button three times from the normalrun condition. The Model 350/351 responds by displayingMODE. Press to display either HGT for HEIGHT mode orDIST for DISTANCE mode. The and buttons allowthe user to change the mode. Press to accept thedisplayed mode.

NOTE: Almost all level applications are configured in the HEIGHTmode.

2.4.2 Height Mode

The HEIGHT mode will provide a 4 mA output when themonitored fluid level is at the bottom of the tank, at thedistance defined by the RANGE setting which the cus-tomer has chosen. The current output at the top of thetank, as defined by the customer programmed SPAN, is20 mA. The output current that the 350/351 provides atlevels between the bottom and top of the tank is deter-mined by an 8 bit D/A converter. This divides the pro-grammed operating distance into 256 equal steps, each ofwhich has its own predefined output current. This 8 bitD/A conversion is the limiting factor in the resolutionof the current loop. The resolution is the programmedSPAN/256. At the maximum SPAN of 24 feet (7.3 m),the resolution is 1.125 inches (29 mm).

Resolution is improved in normal operation with a morelimited operating distance. For example, if a 10 foot (3 m)SPAN is chosen, the resolution is less than 1⁄2" (12 mm)and at 2 feet (0.6 m), the resolution is less than 1⁄8" (3 mm). Therefore the resolution is dependent on the SPAN select-ed for the particular application.

2.4.3 Distance Mode

The DISTANCE mode allows the RANGE and SPANto be programmed as the distance from the face of thetransducer. The distance mode is typically only used fordemonstration or diagnostic purposes, as opposed tolevel measurement.

NOTE: The resulting loop current output in this mode is reversed fromthe HEIGHT Mode. When setting these parameters, be sure allvalues are calculated based on the same MODE of Operation.

3.0 Reference Information

3.1 Description

Model 350/351 non-contact ultrasonic transmitters detectlevel in a wide variety of liquid level applications. The non-contact sensor may be mounted integrally or it may bemounted up to 100 feet (30 m) from the micro-processor-based electronics. All parameters are entered by means of aneasy to use menu-based keypad housed within the unit.

3.2 Principle of Operation

Pulses generated by the microprocessor-based electronicsare directed via the sensor to the liquid surface. Thereturning echo signal is detected by the sensor. The micro-processor amplifies and converts the signal into a digitalrepresentation of the distance from the reflecting surface.A 4–20 mA output current loop is supplied providingthe monitored level data to external control devices. All

operating parameters are entered via three tactile-feedbackpush buttons and displayed on a four character LEDdisplay located under the transmitter cover.

3.3 Troubleshooting

3.3.1 Loss ( LOSS ) Displayed

1. The transmitter will display LOSS when the level falls belowthe selected range value. Signal maintains fail-safe selectionand will return to normal output when level returns to a valuewithin selected range. Increase range if this is not desirable.

2. Echo lost. Check for surface foam, vapors or non-vertical(off center) mounting of sensor.

3.3.2 Output Not Tracking Level

1. Check for obstruction in tank causing false echo.

2. Incorrect calibration mode (HEIGHT/DISTANCE) Refer to Section 2.4.1, Height or Distance Selection on page 11.If unit was set up in the DISTANCE mode, change to theHEIGHT mode to verify transmitter performance.
