THE FIRST JOB AND BEYOND Martha Stewart attended one. Actor Steve Carell did too. So did the CEO of The Home Depot, the former Secretary General of the U.N. and the founder of Intel Corporation. They all graduated from liberal arts colleges. Ever since Harvard opened its doors in 1639, liberal arts colleges have insisted that the best minds are fed a varied diet. Art, literature, the natural and social sciences—students at liberal arts colleges and universities take courses in many fields, regardless of their majors. Why? Like a full-body workout, the liberal arts exercise all the mental muscles, teaching students crucial skills—how to collect information, to critically evaluate data, to communicate their findings clearly and back them up with solid research. Eckerd does all of this and more.

EVERY ECKERD STUDENT COMPLETES AT LEAST ONE INTERNSHIP, RESEARCH STUDY, SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECT AND/OR STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE

LOCATION MATTERSStudents looking for hands-on experience will find plenty of it at Eckerd. A host of local internships and study abroad opportunities extend the classroom out into the world.

Every year more than 200 students complete internships in the vibrant St. Petersburg–Tampa metro area. Students also spend more than 40,000 hours in service-learning as part of classes as diverse as Intro to Environmental Studies and Principles of Management and Leadership.

Interested in heading farther afield? Each year our professors and students travel together to 40 foreign countries for research and cultural study.

“I learned a lot [at Eckerd] about not only what it is to be successful but what it is to be a good human being.”

THE ECKERD EDGEFour years is all it takes. Eckerd College is committed to having every full-time residential student complete the baccalaureate degree within four years. Indeed, 97% of our students who maintain full-time enrollment graduate in four years or fewer.

The Eckerd Edge is designed to enhance the classroom experience through resources and programs that enrich students’ learning while preparing them for a changing world. We do this through hands-on learning opportunities, development of critical thinking and oral and written communication skills, and attention from faculty mentors and dedicated professional staff to assist with graduate school and career preparation.

ON THE NATIONAL SURVEY OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, ECKERD RANKS HIGHER THAN PEER INSTITUTIONS FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO APPLY LEARNING IN REAL-WORLD SETTINGS
