1 10 ECM IS LIVE!!!! Over the last few months, work has been ongoing to implement OpenText ECM (Enterprise Content Management) System within Tygerberg Hospital. The final milestones have now been achieved with the installation of nearly 100 additional computers throughout the hospital and the appointment and training of additional scanning staff. As such we are very pleased to inform you that ECM System is now live across Tygerberg Hospital. So no more physical historical patient files will be handed out. Access to all historical patient files will be via the ECM System. Most of you have already attended a briefing or training session in the last few months, providing you with an understanding of how we will convert our paper patient records into electronic format and how to access information within the system. If you have not yet attended a training session please call the Datacentrix Service Desk on 021 483 8962 or email them at [email protected] to request a training session. The web address to access ECM is: http://tbhecm.pgwc.gov.za. If you have any questions regarding the OpenText ECM system, require any assistance in using the system or would like additional information on training, please call the reception on 021 938 4911 who will route your call to ECM User Support. We feel confident that the implementation of the ECM system will increase our efficiency and effectiveness to improve our service delivery and patient care and as such I ask you to all embrace this new way of working. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Cancer Treatment at Tygerberg Hospital received a double boost with the dual opening of the Big Bore CT Scanner and the Cancer Research and Training Centre

Big Bore CT Scanner

Western Cape Minister of Health, Mr Theuns Botha, officially opened the Big Bore CT Scanner and the Cancer Research and Training Centre at Tygerberg Hospital on 24 May 2013.

The Big Bore CT Scanner offers oncology patients who benefit from the scanner far more accurate planning of treatment in fraction of the time that was previously required. It also has the largest available tunnel to accommodate the patient to be scanned in the exact treatment position.

Research and Training Centre

Western Cape Government and Stellenbosch University jointly funded the upgrading of the ‘teaching block’ that was part of the initial building of Gene Louw Building since 1986.

The newly upgraded centre has:

• a comfortable and modern area for registrar education

• a dedicated computer room for research

• a rest area for visiting lecturers

• high-quality conference facilities.

Above: Ms Karen Wiehahn, Chief Radiographer explaining to Minister Theuns Botha how the Big Bore CT Scanner works

My name is Mpfareleni (Rejoyce) Gavhi. I was a patient at Tygerberg Hospital from September 2009 to February 2010.

For many years I suspected something was wrong in my abdomen since I suffered severe Right Iliac Fossa (RIF) pain and cramps along with constipation and sometimes diarrhoea; but I did not know the cause of the problem. After several years of consulting doctors, undergoing an abdominal ultrasound and a Pap smear, in June 2009 a radiologist at Polokwane Mediclinic conducted a barium small bowel meal which determined that I had a circumferential terminal ileum mass (50 cm) in my bowel. Further tests were required to determine if this mass was malignant.

In July 2009, at age 25, I received a barium enema, a colonoscopy and major emergency abdominal surgery (right hemicolectomy) at Paarl Hospital; which revealed a Stage III colon cancer diagnosis. While I was not all that surprised by the diagnosis, I started to get scared when I learned more about colon cancer through literature research. I discovered that colon cancer is very rare in young people. However, I also learned that, if found early, cancer can often be cured with surgery and chemotherapy. This was a great relief to me and gave me hope for my future recovery.

When one of the doctors at Paarl Hospital told me that I would be receiving further cancer treatment at Tygerberg Hospital’s oncology department (X block), where world-class cancer care is provided to patients, I believed that my colon cancer would be cured. On September 2009, I started chemotherapy treatment at Tygerberg Hospital where I received adjuvant therapy of 5‐Fluouracil/Leucovorin for six cycles which I completed in February 2010. As expected, these gruelling sessions extracted a large toll from me, both physically and mentally, but with the help and support from hospital staff I survived.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the following people:

• The staff at Tygerberg Hospital and X block, for all the kind words, support, care, love, compas-sion, patience and for allowing me to bring my books to chemo sessions. I have achieved a PhD in Mathematics because of your support.

• The volunteers, for giving their time, emotional support, prayers and resources.

• Special thanks go to Dr Hannali Vermeulen and Dr John Sauer for encouraging and supporting me even after I am cured.

After surviving cancer for four years, my message to all cancer patients is that colon cancer is not necessarily a death sentence and I haven’t allowed it to define my life. I am currently furthering my education at the University of Alberta in Canada, where I am committed to helping others beat this disease by volunteering with the local hospitals. I encourage patients to never give up but rather have faith that God, through their doctors, is able to heal them.

A Bible verse that has been very comforting and encouraging to me is: ‘My grace is sufficient for you. II Corinthians 12:9 (NIV).’

I trust that my experience will serve as encouragement to all of you to continue assisting your patients to remain positive throughout their cancer recovery process.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Mpfareleni Rejoyce Gavhi,

Postdoctoral Fellow in Mathematics, University of Alberta,

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

ON A LIGHTER NOTE

Dear God ... (You gotta love kids)

I went to this wedding and they kissed right in church. Is that ok? Neil

Thank You for the baby brother but what I prayed for was a puppy. Joyce

I bet it’s very hard for you to love all in the whole world. There are only 4 people in our family and i can never do it. Nan

I would like to live 900 years like the guy in the bible. Chris

If you give me a genie lamp like Alladin, I will give you anything you want except my money or my chess set. Raphael

We read Thomas Edison made light but in Sunday School they said you did it. So I bet he stole your idea. Donna

Maybe Cain and Abel would not kill each other so much if they had their own rooms. It works with my brother. Larry
