Agriculture Based Project On Organic Farming

Organic

It refers to a product that has been grown or made by avoiding the use of artificial ingredients, preservatives, synthetic

pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or irradiation. In other words, an organic product is a healthier and a better

alternative for us and for the environment.

Page 3: Eco farms

Why Organic?1. Keeps chemicals out of the air, water, soil and our bodies.

2. Reduces off-farm pollution.Non-organic farming doesn't only pollute the land and the farmers; it also harms the environment. Pesticides affect non-farm communities with odourless and invisible poisons.

3. Protects future generations.Studies show that even unborn children are at risk in the womb from the harmful effects of chemicals. Pesticides can adversely affect the nervous system, increase the risk of cancer, and decrease fertility.

4. Builds a healthy soil.It has been proved that feeding the soil with organic matter instead of ammonia and other synthetic fertilizers increases the nutrient content in the produce.

5. Promotes biodiversity.Native plants, birds and hawks return usually after the first season of organic practices; beneficial insects allow for a greater balance, and indigenous animals find these farms a safe haven.

Organic Farming

Organic Farming is a form of agriculture that relies on crop rotation, green manure, biological pest control, and mechanical cultivation to

maintain soil productivity and control pests. It excludes or at least strictly limits the use of synthetic fertilizers and synthetic pesticides,

plant growth regulators and genetically modified organisms.

MYTHS About Organic Farming

1. Yields in Organic Farming are lower than chemical farming. When properly followed, the yields in Organic Farming are, in the long run, far greater than those obtained by chemical farming. In horticulture crops, the effects are even better.

In the case of a chemical farm turning to organic however, there is often a loss in yield and it takes a few years before yields increase and stabilize at a level often higher than that achieved under a chemical regime. It is therefore recommended to convert gradually over a period of three to four years if income from the farm is a key issue.

MYTHS About Organic Farming

2. Organic Farming is not economical. While certain practices such as mulching do entail greater costs on account of labor, the overall cost of cultivation is usually lower than chemical farming. However, an important point to note here is that the farmer has to be self-sufficient in his requirement for composts and pest control measures. Otherwise money could become an issue.
