Analysis of the Harlem River waterfront reveals fragmented patches of ecological habitat, brownfield contamination, degraded water quality due to storm and CSO discharge and unnatural river edges. Our plan aims to improve the overall ecological health of the river through a series of "eco-puncture" interventions aimed at restoring ecological connectivity along the river and addressing contamination and built up edges from industrialization.

HISTORIC CURRENT FUTURE GRADE CHANGE -- SOFTEN THE EDGE + A salt marsh is an environment in the upper coastal intertidal zone between land and salty or brackish water, is dominated by dense stands of halophytic (salt-tolerant) plants such as herbs, grasses, or low shrubs. ese plants are terrestrial in origin and are essential to the stability of the salt marsh in trapping and binding sediments. Salt marshes play a large role in the aquatic food web and the exporting of nutrients to coastal waters. ey also provide support to terrestrial animals such as migrating birds as well as providing coastal protection. ECO - ISLANDS A wetland is an area of land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or seasonally. Such areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. Wetlands include swamps, marshes, and bogs. Wetlands are considered the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. Plant life found in wetlands includes mangrove, water lilies, cattails, sedges, tamarack, black spruce, cypress, gum, and many others. Animal life includes many different amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects, and mammals.
