The UK has received strong criticism for the high levels of illegally sourced imported timber circulating within the UK market. New European timber legislation being launched in March aims to stop the trade of illegally felled timber entering the EU. The WWF and Friends of the Earth have declared the UK as the largest market for illegally logged timber in Europe, with up to two thirds of tropical timber imports reportedly coming from illegal logging. With the European Union’s Timber Regulation (EUTR) coming into force on the 3rd March 2013 any importers, manufacturers and distributors, placing timber or timber products made from illegally harvested timber on the market in the EEA (European Economic Area) will be committing a criminal offence which could result in heavy fines, stock seizures and the suspension of trading rights. In line with the EUTR, operators - those who place products on the ‘market’ for the first time - have to implement a due diligence system in accordance with the regulation. The project was procured via a high-profile RIBA Competition to select an architect and main contractor team that could transform the poorly performing building with a modern cladding solution to enhance its environmental performance, upgrade facilities for patients and staff, and dramatically improve the building’s aesthetics on the London skyline. In 2010, the RIBA Competition was won by the ISG and Hopkins Architects team and work to re- clad the building is now set to start on site. Situated opposite the Houses of Parliament, the East Wing is a prominent landmark on the South Bank, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust sought to appoint a team with the vision to provide a high quality design that would further enhance the Trust’s reputation for excellence in healthcare provision. The ISG and Hopkins team are working closely with Arup, the design and engineering consultancy, which is managing the structural, MEP, façade, fire and acoustic engineering services for the project. Together they have developed an elegant re-cladding solution for the East Wing that features a new glazed external envelope creating two new triangular atria, transforming the appearance and improving functionality of the building. The design solves the historic water penetration problems that have blighted the 1960s structure, while providing additional patient lift capacity in the new atrium above the building’s northern courtyard. Sustainability and environmental performance are key aspects of the ISG and Hopkins Architects solution, and the re-clad design incorporates a range of passive controls to maintain comfortable ambient temperatures within the building. The atria roofs will be constructed from ETFE cushions in a diamond configuration to shade direct sunlight from the south, whilst permitting softer indirect light from the north to naturally illuminate the internal space. New steelwork, hung from the roof, will support single glazing on the western façade, with aluminium ventilation louvers at the top and bottom of each panel to naturally ventilate the buffer zone between the existing and new envelope. Additional high level timber solar shading panels will reduce solar gain, while maintaining views across the River Thames to the House of Parliament. The East Wing is located at the heart of the St Thomas’ Hospital campus and currently houses cardiology services, two intensive care units and admission wards. The building has a 200 bed capacity alongside clinical suites and offices, teaching facilities and ancillary plant and storage areas. Throughout the duration of the project, all of these facilities will remain fully operational. ISG’s Stuart Deverill, managing director – London, commented: “The procurement route specified for the delivery of this project highlights the key emphasis that Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust placed on the architectural merit and functional design excellence of the envelope solution. Winning the RIBA Competition, from an extremely strong shortlist, recognises the innovation and imagination jointly invested through our collaborative partnership. We are delighted to be bringing to site a transformational project that will not only enhance the Trust’s global reputation, but also the experience of patients and staff for many years to come.” ROOFLIGHT AND SKYLIGHT FROM REFLEX March/April 2013 £4.50 Promoting energy efficient, healthy & sustainable building products for the construction industry PAGE 12 TRANSFORMATIONAL ST THOMAS’ East Wing Project New findings increase pressure on UK Timber Market to support sustainable sourcing Continued Page 02

IN THIS ISSUE New findings increasepressure on UK TimberMarket to supportsustainable sourcingContinued from front coverThe advantage of Oriented StrandBoard (OSB) from the UK andIreland is that it is made fromwood harvested in the UK andIreland which can be consideredas low risk due to a longestablished system of fellingregulation. Therefore compliancewith the EUTR will be relatively

simple. However, differentcountries throughout the worldmay be considered to be higherrisk and therefore operatorsimporting timber and timberproducts from these areas willhave to ensure that a robust duediligence system is in place.Alastair Kerr, Director General forthe Wood Panel IndustriesFederation and spokesperson forthe JOSB Done campaign, comments:“JOSB Done welcomes the timelyfindings from the WWF andFriends of the Earth and it is nowup to the industry to respond to

the EUTR. OSB is manufacturedin the UK and Ireland and hasbeen FSC certified for many yearsand can therefore be regarded assustainable, traceable andcontaining wood from a low risksource.”The JOSB Done campaign topromote the benefits andapplications of OSB is supportedby the WPIF, manufacturersNorbord and SmartPly and resinsupplier Huntsman.Web: www.JOSBdone.com

Buildings account for nearly 50%of all carbon dioxide emissionsand reducing the carbon footprintof our new and existing buildingsis vital if the UK is to reach itsambitious carbon reduction

targets. In the last five years theUK government and the EU hasintroduced a raft of legislation tofurther these aims. This includesthe code for sustainable homes, more stringent buildingregulations and the Green Deal -the instrument intended to kickstart a revolution in retrofitting.

The first session of theCommission will be held onMonday 15th April 2013 with theRoyal Institution of Chartered

Surveyors (RICS), NEES (NaturalEnergy Efficient Sustainable) andUK Green Building Council(UKGBC) presenting evidence. This will be followed by sessionson 22nd April, 29th April and13th May 2013. The report isexpected to be published in thesummer.

This will be the Committee'ssecond report. In September 2012it published A better deal forpublic building, which set out anumber of measures forimproving constructionprocurement, including adoptingthe 2012 ConstructionCommitments on all publicbuilding projects over £100m.

All Party Parliamentary Group for Excellence in the BuiltEnvironment Inquiry into Sustainable Construction and the GreenDeal – Commission Members and Evidence Sessions Announced

BRE begins majornew researchproject intoBritain’s homes

BRE has been appointed to carry out a major newresearch project to understand heat losses in theseven million solid wall homes in Great Britain.

The project, funded by the Department of Energy &Climate Change, will consider how these walls areperforming before and after insulation. The energyuse behaviour of occupants and the accuracy oftechniques for measuring heat losses will also beexamined.

John Riley, BRE’s Director of Housing StockPerformance said: “Solid wallhomes may be significantconsumers of energy and thisproject will allow moreaccurate predictions of theenergy consumption of thesehomes and identify thepotential for energy savingsfrom solid wall insulation.”

The study includes a series oflaboratory tests and surveys onreal homes. These will aim toidentify the reasons fordifferences between the energysavings predicted, and thoseactually achieved, from solidwall insulation.

The project is expected to runfor around two and a quarteryears.

The All Party Parliamentary Committee for Excellence in the Built Environment will begintaking evidence this month for its far-reaching Commission of Inquiry into SustainableConstruction and the Green Deal. The aim of the inquiry is to determine best practice,

challenges and barriers to sustainability in the built environment.

Recycle and Refurbishwith Rockfon

When South Tyneside Council decided torefurbish South Shields Town Hall, theyturned to Rockfon to help meet theirsustainability targets. Initially, a 350m2 areawas refurbished to create a newoccupational health centre and IT suite, andplans to fully refurbish the entire 16,000m2

building are now well underway.

“The ability to recycle existing waste wasa key factor for this project”, explainedGary Morgan, Architect for South TynesideCouncil. “Through Rockfon’s upcyclingservice, we were able to arrange for all the

existing wet felt ceiling tiles to be removed, packaged and sent to the Rockwool factoryin Wales for recycling. We then chose newRockfon Koral ceilings to meet our highperformance and aesthetic requirements forthe refurbishment.”

Two and a half pallets of competitor wetfelt waste were received at the Rockwoolfactory for upcycling into the stone woolprocess. This helped to reduce waste toland fill from the refurbishment and alsosupports the AIS Ceilings SustainabilityPartnership’s targets for finding alternateuses for waste in the ceiling industry.

Rockfon has been upcycling their ownstone wool end-of-life ceiling tiles and off-cuts for many years. But now they will alsoaccept wet felt mineral fibre ceiling tilewaste of any age, in any quantity, from anyrefurbishment project, when Rockfonproducts are installed in its place. Thisdiverts waste from landfill, helpingcontractors to meet their zero waste tolandfill targets, and also helps clientsachieve their environmental objectives.

Compriband contributes toLevel 5 homes in Darlington

The construction of a large new estate forTees Valley Housing Association inDarlington is making use of Tremcoillbruck’s Compriband, to seal the head andcill details around the window openings,in order to achieve very high standards of

weather-tightness and thermalperformance.

Beaumont Hill is the site of a formerprimary school where Southdale is nearingcompletion of 106 dwellings, built to Level3 and Level 5 of the Code for SustainableHomes.

Compriband, a compressible sealantproduct was specified by the Durhambased developer in conjunction with theaward winning architectural practice ofJane Darbyshire and John Kendall Ltd. TheCompriband TP500 is installed above andbelow the windows to take up anymovement as the buildings’ timber framesinevitably move due to shrinkage.

New offices for BakewellShow OrganisersThe Bakewell Agricultural &Horticultural Society has a superb newfacility which meets the needs of staff, directors and the various BakewellShow committees, beginning a newchapter in the story of one of the oldestand greenest agricultural events.

Affectionately known as ‘the chickenshed’ the 60-year-old wooden offices

used to organise and manage theBakewell Show had deteriorated sobadly they were becoming unusable.Although replacement offices on theshowground were proposed in 2008and plans drawn up, the project wasconsidered too expensive and shelved.

Pinelog, who specialise inarchitecturally designed leisurebuildings has its offices and factory justunder a mile away, so the Societyrealised that if anyone could help themwith a new building and bring it in onbudget, Pinelog could. The plans were

passed to Pinelog who, rather than costout existing plans, submittedalternative proposals. These were for acontemporary structure which reflectedthe traditional agricultural roots of theshow. It would be built using locallabour and locally sourced ‘green’materials to minimise the carbonfootprint. Most importantly, Pinelog’sproposals meant that new offices couldbe built for half the cost of the originalscheme.

Community sports centre installsspecialist renewable heating technologyA community sports centre inStockport is believed to be among thefirst in the country to install specialistrenewable heating technology in itsclub house, after it was awarded£70,000 in grants.

Burnage Rugby Football Club, inHeaton Mersey, will have heatedchanging rooms for the first time afterinstalling an Ecodan® PUHZ 14kW airto water monobloc heat pump, andthe hot water for showers is nowprovided by an Ecodan CAHV 43kWair to water monobloc heat pump. Both air source heat pumps will bepartly powered by photovoltaic cellsfrom the Low Carbon EnergyCompany, which have been fitted tothe roof.

As well as an increase in comfortinside the clubhouse in the last sixweeks, the club is already reporting a

dramatic drop in fuel bills.

Club member Stuart Hogg explained:“We had an electric hot air systembefore and it wasn’t very effective. Ourbills had reached £15,000 a year, andthey were only going in one direction.“We looked at the options andalthough they did require some capitalinvestment, we knew they wouldprove their worth in the long-term sowe applied for grants.“We were looking for a solution thatreduced our carbon footprint, but ourprimary objective was to reduce ourbills because we want to make ourclub as affordable as possible to the10,000 people who come through thedoors each year.”

The Ecodan CAHV system, which hasbeen approved by the MicrogenerationCertification Scheme, uses advancedair source heat pump technology to

provide a building’s heating and hotwater. As the Ecodan is a factory-sealed unit, installation isstraightforward without the need forany refrigeration work on site. Built-in weather compensation enablesbetter control and increases theefficiency to deliver year-round highperformance.

6 WERNICK www.mcdermottpublishing.com March/April 2013

The primary aged population is at the highest it hasbeen for 50 years, an increase that is unlikely tosubside, with primary schools expected to face afurther 18% rise in pupils by 2020. Discussing theconcept of an expansion, head teacher Jane Girle wasadamant that any new building was aestheticallypleasing and a mirror image of the main schoolbuilding. The other primary objective was to ensurethat the building conformed to the eco-friendlyphilosophy of the school. Fortunately, the highlyreceptive architects listened and worked alongsidethe school to produce a new ‘sustainable’ buildingfit for teaching in the 21st century.

Anne Sheridan, the business manager of the school, made this statement regarding why the new buildingwas named ‘The Tree House’: “Sustainability is a veryprominent ethos throughout our school; it issomething that we try to inform all of our studentsabout.

We are happy to announce that we are the first schoolin Slough to get a green flag rating; this was one ofthe key incentives behind the name. Another factoris that the school is immersed in nature, entirelysurrounded by trees...so it simply seemedapplicable.”

The school opted for a modular building because itrequired an increased capacity in a short space oftime; furthermore, the cost of the build wasinherently far less than that of regular construction.Anne Sheridan also informs us that a great deal ofresearch went into the building: Word of mouthspeaks volumes, and through a continuedcorrespondence with other schools in Slough wefound that one name featured heavily, that name wasWernick. we visited other schools that had recentlyexpanded to take a look at the work that had takenplace and were very impressed with the results.”

Constructing 3 new classrooms, together with twobreakout rooms, Wernick, in conjunction with theappointed architects and the school’s own consultantcleverly utilised the space so as to not encroach onthe outdoor areas and playing fields. The cedarwooden cladding was matched carefully to theexisting building and the roof of the new buildingwas in line with the first floor of the main building.

The classrooms themselves are bright, airy and wellventilated with air-conditioning. The new building

does not appear to be out of place and blends ineffortlessly with the whole school environment. Thecolour of the walls and carpets match the currentschool décor and the children in the Tree House donot feel segregated in any way from the mainbuilding.

The construction was seamless – the modularbuildings were delivered over a period of two days, and then the finishing work began in earnest. Theconstruction team were unobtrusive, and the noiselevels were kept to a minimum and did not impacton the teaching and learning of the school. All of the staff are delighted with the new buildingand the classrooms; so much so that the school iscurrently in talks with SBC regarding a phase 2expansion. All of the teachers conveyed a desire tomove into the new building as soon as possible, expressing how much they believed it was in sync interms of design, and welcoming the integration ofstate of the art ICT and air-con.

Wernick modular buildingsWhen cost-effectiveness, a tight delivery and minimum disruption are top priorities

The Ofsted inspection report on St Giles-on-the-Heath School in Devondescribed it as “an outstanding and very special little school”.

The three modules for the school’s new pre-school building were craned inover three hours one morning. Finishing work on the site took just eightweeks, giving an on-site construction time that was dramatically less thantraditional build and without the noise, intrusion and disruption thattraditional techniques bring with them. The exterior of Wernick modularbuildings can be finished to suit our clients’ budgets and aesthetic choice. St Giles School’s new building is clad in Siberian Larch, a sustainable woodthat complements the school’s environment.

Charlotte McCarroll, the unit’s manager and teacher said, “This building islight years away from our previous accommodation”.

With the addition of this new purpose-designed building, St Giles Schoolexperienced a period of great positive change, of which Wernick Buildings

were proud to be part.

ISO-Chemie tape seals it atnew Bath technology college

ISO-Chemie's high performance expandingfoam sealing tape has been specified for aninnovative low carbon technology collegein Bath.

The ISO BLOCO One tape has beenspecified to provide a high performanceairtight, acoustic and thermal interior andexterior seal between the ModCell® straw-filled, cassette-style prefabricated panelsused in the construction of the new twostorey 1,200 sq m Nucleus building teachingblock at the Hayesfield Girls' School.

The Nucleus building incorporates a layoutof labs and classrooms arranged around asuper lab and double-height learningresource centre to allow the school to extendits provision of science teaching.

Sustainability was a key driver of theproject, which demonstrates the benefits ofthe straw bale cladding system to eliminatethe need for a separate structural frame andincrease the speed of build on site throughoff-site pre-fabrication methods

ModCell® has been used to build the super-insulated structure to the highest ecologicalstandards using thermally efficient, 48cmthick, prefabricated straw bale wall panels. These utilise the excellent thermal insulationqualities of straw bale and hemp basedprefabricated panels to allow super-insulated, high-performance, low energy‘passive' buildings to be constructed usingrenewable, locally sourced, carbonsequestering materials.

Built on the site of the former LewishamBridge Primary School, the new PrendergastVale College caters for all ages, from nurseryto 16, with a capacity of 835 made up of 25

full-time nursery, 210 primary and 600secondary pupils.

The original school building which receivedGrade II Listing “as an outstanding exampleof Edwardian school architecture”, withEnglish Heritage particularly praising itsinterior, has been carefully incorporated intothe overall design and now provides theCollege’s imposing main entrance,Reception, Library, Art Department andSculpture Garden, linking seamlessly withits contemporary surroundings.

The building needed sympatheticrefurbishment, particularly the imposingsingle glazed windows which presented asignificant challenge for the College’s energyefficiency targets. As secondary glazing is areversible adaptation acceptable to heritagebodies and can markedly improve windowinsulation levels, HKR Architects togetherwith main contractor Costain’s sub-contractor Lucas Fit Out, consulted with

Selectaglaze, the UK’s leading designer andmanufacturer of secondary glazing systems.Selectaglaze proposed a range of treatmentsthat complemented the designs of theexisting windows whilst providing accessfor ventilation and cleaning. Low emissivityglass was recommended as it can reduceheat loss through traditional windows byup to 60%. High performance seals werealso recommended in order to markedlyreduce draughts.

Selectaglaze installed nearly 200 secondarywindows, mostly vertical sash, some witharched heads. All were finished in whitepowder paint.

An additional bonus from the installationof secondary windows is the high levels ofnoise insulation, typically 40-45dB. The largeairy rooms now provide a comfortable,draught-free, quiet environment, conduciveto learning.

James Jones Timber SystemsDesign EC5 Compliant RoofEngineered timber manufacturer JamesJones Timber Systems has successfullycompleted a fully EC5 compliant roof for aschool in Scunthorpe, designed usingin–house software. This is significant

because while BS 5268 Part 2 is stilloperational, most publiclyprocured projects in the UKalready require design to Eurocodestandards. This large scale project, valued at£3m, was 65.1m long and 37.5mwide and required 1710 UKmanufactured, FSC registered, JJI-Joists. Its sheer scale hadimplications for both manufactureand supply of the roof, so thestructure was fabricated in six

UK Plasterboardmanufacturers movetowards zero waste

The UK’s plasterboardmanufacturers, represented bythe Gypsum ProductsDevelopment Association(GPDA), are continuing to play akey role towards the objective ofzero plasterboard waste sent tolandfill.

During 2012, British Gypsum,Knauf, and Siniat (formerlyLafarge Plasterboard) continuedprogress against key targets in theAshdownAgreement, a voluntaryinitiative on plasterboard recyclingsigned by GPDA members, andsupported by WRAP (Waste andResources Action Programme)and the Department forEnvironment, Food and RuralAffairs. Among the headlinefigures reported by the GPDA for2012 are the results for productionwaste sent to landfill by the UK’sthree major gypsum board andplaster manufacturers. Havingdropped from 6,300 tonnes in 2007to zero tonnes in 2011, thiscategory of waste remained at

zero tonnes in 2012.

During 2012, the quantity ofplasterboard recycled bymanufacturers into newplasterboard, was up on theprevious year by 10% to 68,988tonnes compared with 62,750tonnes in 2011. The total for all‘environmentally beneficial’applications, as defined by theEnvironment Agency was evenmore impressive, calculated at95,238 tonnes or 45.4%, showingvery encouraging progresstowards the AshdownAgreement’s target of 50% by2015. GPDA Secretary, CrispinDunn-Meynell, comments: “Thetarget assumes that 25% ofplasterboard waste recycled byspecialist recyclers is from newconstruction, which we believe isa conservative assessment as thisis the ‘cleanest’ waste andtherefore the easiest to recover andrecycle.”

Originally initiated in 2007, the

Ashdown Agreement wasupdated in 2011 to extendplasterboard recycling targetsbeyond the earlier agreement’s2010 deadlines, and to set a newlong term objective of zeroplasterboard waste to landfill by2025. Continuing efforts by theGPDA’s UK members haveresulted in year on year increasesin plasterboard recycling, saysCrispin Dunn-Meynell. Hecomments: “Initiatives such as“take-back” schemes, wherebycontractors can returnplasterboard waste tomanufacturers rather than sendingit to landfill, have provedparticularly successful. The GPDAis also working with otherstakeholders, through itsparticipation in the PlasterboardSustainability Partnership, intackling waste throughout thesupply chain, advising customerson good waste practice andefficient design.”

Available in the UK later this year, these systems take as their startingpoint the fact that buildingsconsume about 40% of all theenergy we generate and areultimately responsible for themajority of harmful greenhousegas emissions.

Schueco’s response has beenfirstly, to increase insulation levels

Self-builders turn toSTYROFOAM forsubterranean eco houseA retired couple fromNorthumberland who built ahouse of their own to be efficientto run, comfortable and carbonneutral have turned toSTYROFOAM-A extrudedpolystyrene insulation to helpthem achieve their dream.

Their so-called ‘Green House’ isbuilt on a plot of land slopingaway from what was Bryn andPam Owen’s rear garden.Planning restrictions in an Area ofOutstanding Beauty demanded adesign that would have minimalvisual impact – and the slopingsite was turned to advantage byopting for a subterranean house.

“We decided we would havenothing above the road levelwhich would not normally befound in a large country garden,”explained Pam. “We wanted tomake a minimal impact and asone as our grandsons so nicely putit, it also has the advantage thatwhen we die we will already besix foot under!”

With a design aimed at achievingstandards equivalent to Level 6 ofthe Code for Sustainable Homes –even if registration was not

mandatory for such a one-off,private dwelling – the Owensdesigned insulation, heating andlighting systems to ensure thehouse would be carbon neutral. This meant installing insulationwhich would deliver required U-values and maintain effectivethermal performance even in aharsh, underground environment.

“We decided to work to target U-values of 0.15W/m2K for surfacesnext to air and 0.2W/m2K wherethey were in the ground, as the

temperature rarely drops to -50ºCin our region and the calculatedheat requirement of 3KW couldeasily be provided by a simpleheating system,” added Bryn.

Key to achieving the U-valuetargets for the floor was below-slab insulation which needed towithstand the load of the buildingand perform in an externalenvironment. STYROFOAM-Amaterial FLOORMATE 500-Awasspecified thanks to its highcompressive strength andmoisture resistance. The Owen’sstructural engineer recommendeda thickness of 100mm to achievethe desired U-value at the sametime as meeting mechanicalstrength requirements.

Opened in 2000 as a seed archive andresearch facility that stores millions ofseeds gathered from plants at threat ofextinction from around the world, Kew’sMillennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst Placeis a globally renowned facility. RicinusCommunis, more commonly known as thecastor oil plant is amongst the collectionsat Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank and is asustainable crop used as the basis forKemper System’s ground breaking solvent-free and odourless waterproofingmembrane.

Standing water in the distinctive sectionedroof’s back gutters had caused the weldedjoints to degrade, resulting in leaks to theroof that had to be addressed.

Explains roofing contractor, Mark Draperfrom Draper Construction Ltd: “The jointsbetween the stainless steel rolled roof andthe stainless steel lined gutters weredesigned to enable movement but, wherethe welded connection had begun todegrade, leaks had started to occur. Inresponse to this, Kew’s Millennium SeedBank needed a solution that would be bothwatertight and flexible and KemperSystem’s range of cold liquid-applied

membranes was the ideal answer.”

Kemper System advised Kew’s MillenniumSeed Bank to select Kemperol 2K-PUR forthe project as the sustainably sourced andsolvent-free resin and flexiblereinforcement fleece, manufactured usinga recycled plastic bottle content, deliveredon the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’senvironmental commitment. Moreover, asthe solvent-free membrane is also odourfree, it enabled the building to remain fullyoperational throughout the project, despitethe close proximity of the air vents to theback gutters on the roof.

Draper Construction primed the gutterswith Kempertec Primer before applyingthe Kemperol 2K-PUR resin. The resinsaturates a polyester reinforcement fleece, which is immensely strong, flexible andtear resistant, and cures to form a seamless, homogenous membrane that cannotdelaminate.

Rodeca helps LICA rollout a BREEAM HE“Outstanding” rating

The façade of Lancaster University’s newcontemporary arts HQ comprises almostentirely of Rodeca’s polycarbonate panels.Translucent cladding panels from Rodecahave helped Lancaster Institute for theContemporary Arts (LICA) become thefirst higher education building to achievea BREEAM “Outstanding” rating.

In addition, LICA is only the secondbuilding ever to achieve this post-completion – out-performing LancasterUniversity’s brief to least meet a BREEAM“Excellent” rating.

Rodeca’s recyclable polycarbonate panelswere used throughout the 4,949m² buildingas a rainscreen cladding system generally

although in some areas they were trebledto form the whole of the external wall andmeet Part L of the Building Regulations.

Some 1,840m² formed the façade elements, with Rodeca’s 40mm-thick Kristall panelsforming the rainscreen cladding andexternal skin of the whole wall element, then Kristall forming the middle skin and50mm Opal the internal skin of the wholewall. The same build up featured on 60m²of hangar doors.

The 500mm-wide panels are manufacturedwith a tongue and groove coupling and arefixed with steel fasteners, in LICA’s caseby specialist sub-contractor M Price.Theoretically, facades can be more than200m long and a panel height of up to 25mcan be mounted in one piece.

Some 200 times tougher than glass, thepanels enable light transmission between5-65% and at the same time are highlyefficient insulators of heat (< 0.8W/m²K)and sound (21-43dB). Lightweight(approximately 4.5kg/m²) but stable, theyalso feature good fire resistance to BS andEN standards and are UV-protected witha 10-year-guarantee.

IKO PLC’s NEW PRODUCTS & SUSTAINABLE OFFERING AT ROOFEX

IKO PLC will beshowcasing their two newpitched roof products atthe Roofex exhibition atthe NEC in Birmingham,1st & 2nd May. They havebeen added to IKO’s rangeof sustainable roofengineering concepts, which already includesgreen roof systems, photovoltaic energy roofsystems and heat reflectivemembranes. IKO will alsobe presenting livedemonstrations on theirselected roofing systems, and CPD seminars over thetwo days.

IKOslate is a composite roof tilemanufactured from mineralreinforced, 99% recycled and re-engineered materials. Its uniquestructure gives it superior strengthand makes it easier to handle andinstall. IKOslate has the sameaesthetic qualities as slate becausemoulds of quarried slates are usedto form the composite tiles. Eachmould imparts different texturesand patterns to the tile and itsnatural look is enhanced by arealistic “slate grey” finish.IKOslate allows the experiencedroofer, or contractor withoutextensive roofing experience, todeliver a sustainable roof with thelook and feel of slate faster andmore economically thanpreviously possible. An IKOslatetile is around 80% lighter than a

traditional slate of the same sizewhich makes transporting themto, and around site, much easierespecially as they’re supplied inclever carry-packs for efficientmanual handling. Unlike naturalslate, IKOslate can be installedusing power tools. Tiles can benailed down using a hammer ornail gun and they can be cut witha hacksaw or jigsaw. Any offcutsare 100% recyclable.

Ultimo HS breather membrane isable to cope with the demands oftoday’s house building ininnovative ways which are notpossible with conventionalunderslating membranes. With themajority of membranes focusingsimply on vapour permeability, there can be a danger of moisture

overload as newly occupied (andheated) houses dry out quickly. However, Ultimo HS is anintelligent membrane that can dealwith high levels of humidity andis able to absorb and release largeamounts of moisture vapour in ameasured, effective way. Therefore, the risks associatedwith condensation are virtuallyeliminated with Ultimo HS.

The membrane’s inherentproperties also mean that it is ableto effectively balance therequirement for heat retentionwithin the roof void with the needto control condensation at rooflevel. Ultimo HS has similarvapour permeability properties toIKO’s established Rubershieldmembranes, but is capable of

absorbing moisture and retainingit until such time as the climaticconditions allow for its release byevaporation. In this way, excesscondensation moisture resultingfrom new build or renovation wet-trades can be ‘managedintelligently’ instead of resultingin the condensation problemsnormally associated with thesesevere conditions.

Scott Bader is exhibiting for the first time at Roofex 2013,which this year takes place on May 1st and 2nd at theNEC, Birmingham. On the Scott Bader stand (No.218)they will be showcasing CrysticROOF® BBA Premier, their BBA approved resin based liquid applied seamlessGRP cold applied roofing system for flat and pitchedroofs, balconies, dorma windows and walkways. Duringthe show, visitors to the Scott Bader stand will have theopportunity to enter daily prize draws and sign up fortheir exclusive Roofex show promotional offers. The fullrange of CrysticROOF products is exclusively stocked bySIG Roofing Supplies in the UK and supplied nationallyto roofing installers via their local SIG outlet.

The CrysticROOF BBA Premier system is only availablefrom a fully trained and accredited CrysticROOF installer, and then comes with a 25 year materials guarantee toremain watertight and maintenance free. Approved UKinstallers are listed on Scott Bader’s national database aftersuccessfully completing their training course. Anumber of key roofing projects have been successfullyinstalled in the UK and the CrysticROOF BBA Premiersystem is now recognized by several local authorities andleading architects as a durable and long lasting high quality

replacement for traditional roofing materials such asbitumen, felt and lead, which is also proving to have betterdurability than single-ply membrane systems.

CrysticROOF BBA Premier is a fully BBA approved ‘coldapplied’ liquid applied roofing membrane system whichincorporates both a glass fibre reinforced laminate resinand a UV resistant pre-pigmented isophthalic topcoatwhich provide the 25 year guaranteed long termweathering performance of the CrysticROOF materials; norecycled raw materials or blended products are used inCrysticROOF products to ensure long lasting quality in use.As part of the BBA’s technical approval for constructioncertification, CrysticROOF BBA Premier has also beenaccepted by the NHBC as an approved GRP roofwaterproofing system to NHBC Standards 2011, Part 7Roofs, section 7.1 for flat roofs and balconies and 7.2 forpitched roofs, provided the roof is installed, used andmaintained in accordance with the BBA certification.CrysticROOF is fully compatible with standard roofingmaterials commonly used, such as OSB3 boards, edge trims, fillets and flashings.

For professional roofing installers, there are a number ofcommercial advantages and practical benefits in using theCrysticROOF system in preference to traditional bitumenor felt products. Dennis Sains, a partner in Sains Roofing,a firm that has been installing flat roofs for over 27 yearsexplained why they decided to invest in becoming anaccredited CrysticROOF BBA Premier installer and moveaway from using hot bitumen: “We have successfullytendered for and won a number of major roofing projectsin the last 12 months specifying CrysticROOF products. For my company, using Scott Bader’s GRP cold applied

seamless roofing system has been much easier, quicker andcleaner to work with compared to the hot bitumen and feltsystem we traditionally only used before.

Being a cold applied liquid system, which only needs usto mix in the correct amount of catalyst, the big plus on siteis that it is a much safer system to use. We no longer haveto work with gas torches, naked flames or carry buckets ofhot bitumen.” With an increasing number of projectmanagers banning ‘hot’ works on public buildings due tohealth and safety risks and to avoid noxious fumes, roofingcontractors who only using hot bitumen systems run thereal risk of not being able to quote for some public tendersand so lose the opportunity to win new business.

To help roofing installers increase their business by beingable to quote for higher specification roofing projects andto be able to work for a larger part of the year, Scott Baderhas extended the CrysticROOF range with two additionalspecialty performance products: one for colder weatherinstallation and another which meets stringent buildingfire resistance BS standards.

Available throughout the UK from over 180 SIG distributoroutlets, CrysticROOF provides a complete package forinstallers, including a range of high quality trims andancillaries. Scott Bader is also an associate member of theNational Federation of Roofing Contractors andCrysticROOF BBA Premier is a recognised system underthe Competent Roofer scheme.

Both wins were in tribute to the WaterLabel; a revolutionary scheme allowingconsumers to compare hundreds ofproducts that meet up to the standards ofthe industry, for water efficiency, in a bid tohelp the nation become more water-wise.Launched in the UK in 2007, with thesupport of key suppliers such as TwyfordBathrooms, the scheme has proven such a

success it is now planned to be rolled outto 27 European countries. The entirelabelling scheme has over 2,500 productswith 200 of them registered Europe wide.

John Blackburn, Managing Director ofTwyford Bathrooms comments: “Havingbeen heavily involved with the Water Labelscheme from the very beginning, as one ofthe first partners going as far back as 2007,it is fantastic to see it recognised in this wayand we would like to send our warmcongratulations to the BMA.”

He adds: “The water efficiency issue isgrowing rapidly. This is reflected in ourdemand at Twyford Bathrooms, for

example, we are now exporting our waterefficient products as far as Africa as morecountries look to make the most of theirincreasingly limited water sources.

“As such, together as an industry, we havea duty of care to provide the tools andsolutions to enable consumers to optimisetheir water efficiency, with the Water Labelplaying an imperative part in this. Byworking together, we can help pave theway for a more water-wise future forBritain.”

Twyford Bathrooms was the first companyto launch an ultra-efficient 4/2.6L dual flushtoilet in 2007 under the unique Flushwise®

brand, as listed with the scheme. Today,Twyford Bathrooms supplies a largenumber of water-efficient products underthe Water Label covering toilets, taps andbaths.

Reco is part of Polymer Recovery Ltd, aplastics recycling company inLincolnshire. Therefore our panels andsystem were designed with theenvironment in mind.

They are manufactured using a speciallow carbon process that uses far lessenergy compared to tiles which are firedin a kiln at over 1300°C.

Reco Panel is made from 55% recycledmaterial which comes from ourprocessing plant. The coloured inks usedfor the panel designs are water-based andUV cured which means they are harmlessto the environment and can be recycled.Plus our special adhesive can easily beremoved at any recycling plant makingour entire range 100% recyclable.

eco have pioneered thetechnology to printdirectly onto their newcladding panels openingup a world of designpossibilities.

They have recruited a team of awardwinning designers and photographersto create two ranges of designs that willsuit every taste and price range.

The original Reco Panel was an excellentproduct, but we felt the profiles wereinterfering with the overall look. We satdown with our designers and someinstallers to re-design a profile-freeversion and along the way ‘Reco Tile &Reco Space’ were born”(Robert FleetMD Reco).

Reco Tile & Space panels can be fittedover any reasonably level surfaceincluding existing tiles. They can beinstalled using only three simple

products, Reco Seal, Adhesive andSilicone.

There are no profiles and the seamlessfinish can be achieved in a third of thetime it would take to fit tiles. As there is no grout you can saygoodbye to cracking and mould andenjoy 10 years guaranteed maintenance-free.

“The only difference between Reco’spanels and a tiled wall is performance;our products are quicker, cheaper, betterinsulators and now you can even haveany design or photograph on them too”Says Robert.

24 HEATING & ENERGY EFFICIENCY www.mcdermottpublishing.com March/April 2013

NHS Dudley is responsible for improving the healthand well being of everyone who lives in the fivelocalities of Dudley: Brierley Hill, Stourbridge,Dudley North, Halesowen and Sedgley. As part ofits ongoing strategy to improve provision for localpeople, the NHS Trust embarked on a programmeto upgrade Halesowen Health Centre – a busy GPpractice.

The M & E contractor for the project, KershawMechanical Services Limited, decided that an off-sitemanufacture approach would have particularbenefits for this project. They approachedArmstrong(a leading supplier of energy efficient HVACequipment and integrated plantrooms) which has aproduction facility in Halesowen.

Armstrong supplied its popular MBS integratedheating solution for the project. In contrast totraditional approaches (where components aredelivered to the site and assembled there) the MBSwas assembled and integrated away from site, atArmstrong’s factory. On the day designated for theinstallation, the preassembled boiler plant wasdelivered to the site, requiring only final connections.

As the equipment was already pre-assembled andtested, it was possible to replace the system withindays rather than the four to five weeks that wouldhave been needed if the systems were assembled on

site. The modular design of the MBS also broughtimportant benefits when moving the new equipmentinto position. It is designed so that sections of thesystem can be moved quickly and easily through astandard doorway, without the need for specialistlifting equipment. This speeded up and greatlysimplified the positioning of the equipment at thehealth centre.

In addition, the MBS provides outstanding energyefficiency. It incorporates three high efficiency 62kWcondensing boilers, variable speed drive pumps andadvanced controls, which automatically match theheat and hot water delivered to the changingdemands of the building and its occupants. This hascut the energy costs for the site significantly, andenabled the NHS Trust to reduce its carbon footprint. The MBS also has more compact design than theequipment it replaces, freeing up space, andimproving the boiler room environment by makingit easier to clean and maintain.

Manufacturing the heating solutions away from thehealth centre also had the advantage of reducingcontractor traffic at the site during the project, reducing health and safety risk. It also meant thatassembly of the heating systems by the equipmentmanufacturer in a purpose-designed factoryguaranteed the very highest levels of quality for thefinished system.

Integrated heating solution from

ARMSTRONGspeeds the way for health centre refurbWhen aWest Midlands NHS Trust needed to upgrade HVACsystems at a busy health centre, an integrated heating solutionfromArmstrong speeded up and simplified the refurbishmentproject. The high efficiency equipment installed at the site willnow reduce energy usage throughout its lifetime to minimise the

running costs and carbon impact of the centre.

Dominic Cutts of Armstrong said, Our integrated heatingsolutions and plantrooms are installed all over the country

and are also shipped abroad, so it was a great pleasure to beable to assist a local customer. The MBS has proved to beextremely popular since its launch, particularly for healthsector projects, as it brings major energy efficiencybenefits with minimum disruption to services.

The Lord family from Derbyshire is reapingthe benefits of installing a biomass pelletboiler fromWindhager after wishing to usea retirement fund to reduce the amount ofeffort required to keep their 18th centurycottage warm, as well as having a morecontrollable source of heat.

The Lord family approached Elliotts ofBakewell, a small local heating installer

which has a strong reputation in the areafor installing high quality boiler systems.Andrew Elliott of Elliotts of Bakewell hadrecently installed a biomass boiler forhimself and therefore recommended a25.5kW BioWIN system fromWindhager.

The family had not previously consideredwood fuel but liked the idea that thiswould provide the controllable heat theyrequired, and cut carbon emissions, compared with their previous anthraciteboiler.

The family finds the system easy to use andless time consuming then their previoussystem, Mr Lord commented, “The boileris very efficient, I’m very impressed as it’san incredible piece of kit. As I live in themiddle of nowhere, gas was not an optionyet it’s got the same ease of use as a gasboiler.” The boiler is fed via a bulk pellethopper, which uses a Windhager suctionsystem.

The pellet boiler was installed in the oldcoal store located adjacent to the front doorof the property, and a 1.5 ton pellet storeadded which can hold several months’supply of fuel.

Viessmann has launcheda new feature on itsVitotronic 200 controlsystem, which uniquelyallows heat pump andsolar PV systems to workas a hybrid system. Fromthe heat pump decidinghow to use free energyfrom the solar PV,electricity bills aresignificantly reduced.

The controls allow theheat pump to monitorthe electricity generatedby the solar PV forsufficient generation overa consistent period oftime, and then bring onthe heat pump and utilisethe free energy ratherthan returning it to thegrid. This means that

Merseytravel ChoosesEaton’s Memshield 3Boards For HistoricBuilding

When itbecame necessary to

replace electrical distributionequipment in the Grade II listedGeorge’s Dock Ventilation andCentral Station of the MerseyRoad Tunnel building,Merseytravel chose Memshield 3

smart boards and MCCBpanelboards from Eaton as the keyelements of the new installation.

The decision to use Eatonproducts was based on theirversatility, performance and valuefor money, on the supportprovided by Eaton engineers whocarried out a detailed site surveybefore the order was placed, andon Merseytravel’s positiveexperience of working with Eatonon previous projects.

It was decided that the building’selectrical systems should bereplaced in their entirety, but thisproject was not without itschallenges. The space available toaccommodate the riser cables wasvery limited and, as is typical of abuilding of this age, the riserswere not aligned vertically. However, significant

modifications to the structure ofthe building were out of thequestion because of the building’slisted status and architecturalvalue. For this reason, the decision wastaken to use Eaton’s MCCBpanelboards as their removablecross rails meant it was possible tolay cables into the board insteadof feeding them through a glandplate aperture offering significanttime savings and making theinstallation much easier.

Other key requirements of thenew distribution system were thatit should provide flexibility tocope with future needs, andcomprehensive metering in linewith Part L2 of the BuildingRegulations.

Marks & SpencerCompletes RetroFit of EnergyEfficiency Lighting

In a drive to become the world’smost sustainable major retailer,Marks & Spencer has set the goalof reducing their store, office andwarehouse energy usage by 35%per square foot by 2015. The UKretailer is addressing how itsexisting stores are lit and hasturned to leading building servicescontractor, Balfour BeattyEngineering Services (BBES). Theresult is the swapping out of T5ribbon wall light fittings and theinstallation of low energy LEDlighting in over 170 stores in theUK.

For the first phase of the project, delivered in partnership withlighting manufacturer, Phillips, several dedicated teams fromBBES worked in stores across theUK to complete the installations.

“The new LED lighting isexpected to make a significant

impact in helping to reduce Marks& Spencer’s non-merchandiselighting costs,” commented StevenPalmer, BBES Project Manager.“The specification of Phillips longlife, low energy lighting systemsrepresents significant cost savingsfor each store.”

As the UK’s leading M&Econtractor, BBES has a clear focuson delivering schemes that offerlow environmental impact. Forthe second phase of works, sustainable initiatives such asenergy monitoring, intelligentlighting controls and waterlessurinals will also be integrated intothe stores to further reduce energyconsumption.

Improvements to meteringequipment will strengthen theretail chain’s ability to measureenergy usage and ability toanalyse stores' consumptiontrends. This increased visibilitywill mean the stores can easilyidentify and quickly respond towhere energy usage is high due tofaulty equipment.

BBES will also be working withMarks & Spencer on developingsystems which allow them toremotely manage in-store lighting, heating and ventilation equipmentand food refrigeration systems. An added benefit of this will meanless maintenance related calloutsand the associated environmentalimpact these have.

32 SUDSCAPE www.mcdermottpublishing.com March/April 2013

BREEAM TargetsBoosted by Sudscape’sLandscaping System

Project case studySudscape Boosts Eco Credentials OfOlympicVillage

Aunique SUDS-compliant paving system comprised of recycledcar tyres is being used to boost the eco-credentials of landscapingprovided at the Olympic Village.

The sudscape™ system is being used on 460 sq metres ofpathways within the residential courtyards of the Athletes’villageLandscape Architects Macfarlane Wilder, who are theappointed Landscape Architects for blocks N10 and N14,specified Sudscape for a number of reasons. The sudscape™System does not require a concrete or tarmac base, a keyconsideration for roof top landscaping where access forinstallation equipment is difficult. Use of the system alsoeliminates the risk of standing water or flooding - sudscape™has its own built-in rubber sub-base using recycled car tyres, with a top layer comprised of resin and aggregate. As both layersare porous and flexible, water is held within the voids withinthe sub-base until it is naturally absorbed back into the watertable.

sudscape™ offers a host of other benefits making it ideal for theOlympic project, including a relatively quick installation process, easy maintenance, with no weeding required, and also costeffectiveness, with the system boasting a similar price structureto block paving

Peter Wilder comments:“The Athletes’ Village demands a rigorous approach tosurface water management responsibly sourcedmaterials. sudscape™ is a system that we haveencountered through our work on the BRE InnovationParks where it has proven its credentials as a low carbonalternative to traditional resin bound systems.”

Topping:Sudscape Resin Bound Topping 20mm

A unique SUDS-compliant hardlandscaping system, Sudscape ™ canearn a construction or landscaping projectup to eleven BREEAM credits due to itsrange of excellent eco-credentials, basedon criteria information provided in theGreen Guide to Specification.Sudscape is a pioneering system comprised of a sublayer of recycled car tyres combined with a porous toplayer of resin bound aggregate. Rainwater is able to soakthrough the top layer where it is held in the voids of thesub layer before being naturally absorbed back into thewater table, thereby eliminating the risk of standingwater. It is suitable for use across a range of applicationsincluding paths and pavements, driveways and borders, and it requires minimal maintenance.

Specifically it complies with the following sections ofthe Green Guide:

- Hard Landscaping Materials Section: recycled surfacingmaterial equates to one credit- Responsible Sourcing of Materials Section: being madefrom recycled car tyres, use of Sudscape can achieve upto three credits- Flood Risk Section: its surface water attenuationproperties equates to two credits- Minimising water course pollution section: Sudscape’ssurface water source control treatment equates to onecredit- Innovation Section: Sudscape’s main component ofrecycled car tyres qualifies it for a further credit. The Sudscape system has been rigorously tested at theBRE Innovation Park over a three year period where itis the only landscaping product to have remained porouswith no maintenance required at all in a woodedenvironment. The patented system allows water and airto pass through, but not light and can therefore be simplypower washed or vacuumed to minimise any fine build-up. In addition, in freeze thaw tests it does not laminate,as is often the case with other resin products whenplaced on top of concrete or tarmac.

Wayne Langford, Director at Sudscape comments: “WithBREEAM accreditations now high on the agenda,Sudscape can substantially boost the endeavour to securea very good or excellent rating on a project. Not onlydoes it meet the criteria for flooding, but being made ofrecycled car tyres it gains valuable innovation andsustainability credits also.

Marley’s new anti-flood valves help totackle flash floodsMarley’s recently launched anti-flood valves

serve as the ideal solution to prevent thebackflow from surcharging sewers - providing

fast and effective operation.

In addition, the anti-flood valves help to minimise thefinancial losses caused by sewage flooding events and arefully compliant with Building Regulations.

There are approximately two million properties at risk fromflooding in the UK with many directly affected by river orcoastal flooding however, more homes are damagedindirectly by the backflow of sewage. Marley’s anti-flood(or non-return) valves have been designed to preventbackflow from surcharging sewers, so wherever there isdanger from rising water backing up into a propertythrough the drainage system, the valve will close off thebackflow automatically to prevent flood damage.Importantly, the double-flap valve is fully compliant withBuilding Regulations and Document H1, which states: “2.11

Anti-flooding valves should preferably be of the doublevalve type, and should be suitable for foul water and havea manual closure device.

They should comply with the requirements of BS EN 13564.A single valve should not normally serve more than onebuilding.”

Produced in both PVCu and ABS Plastic, the anti-floodvalves are both corrosion resistant and impervious to rodentpenetration, offering specifiers and consultants productlongevity and durability. Furthermore, the design of theanti-flood valves is as such to enable simple installationand provide superior performance benefits in vulnerableareas such as low-lying coastal, lake or valley areas, privatedrainage systems connected to public sewers supplied withpumping stations or where non-pressure flow control isneeded.Ian Crampton, Product Manager at Marley Plumbing andDrainage states: “Weather patterns over the last few years

have changed dramatically bringing more intense periodsof rain, that existing drainage systems are simply unableto cope with. The destruction caused by resulting flashfloods can be devastating and costly, not to mentiondangerous when dealing with sewage water. The functionof the new double-flap valve therefore, is crucial to stoppingthe backflow of surcharging sewers. The effective designmeans the valve will close off the backflow automaticallyto prevent flood damage.

“We are committed to providing customers with highquality products that meet their needs, as well as anexperienced technical design back up and support service, ensuring the right product is always specified for theapplication.”Marley’s anti-flood valves are available widely throughmerchant stockists. Crown Paints marked Ecobuild withprominent support for Britain’s biggest

climate change campaign, Climate Week.

The UK paint manufacturer was a national partner of theinitiative, which used high profile celebrities and communityevents to inspire a new wave of action to create a sustainablefuture. Sponsorship of Climate Week reinforces Crown’s long-standing commitment to the environment. The company’saward-winning programme ‘Earthbalance’ sets the standard inembedding sustainability at the heart of a business and has seenCrown gain increasing recognition as being among the top tierof sustainable businesses in the UK.

Earthbalance’s progress made to date has seen Crown secure aclutch of high profile accolades in 2012, including the SustainableInnovation Award from the British Coatings Federation, and theSustainable Business Award For Large Companies from theLancashire Business Environment Awards. From its stand atEcobuild the team from Crown highlighted how the company’sapproach can support specification professionals in areasincluding reduced waste streams, the achievement of BREEAMratings and products offering extended maintenance cycles.

In 2008, Crown launched ‘Earthbalance’ a dedicatedsustainability programme, featuring an ambitious, long-termtarget to drive down its own greenhouse gas emissions, withthe target of a 10 per cent reduction in 2015 – and 25 per cent in2020. These two targets are in addition to a sustainability targetof zero waste to landfill, originally targeted for December 2012– which was achieved more than 12 months ahead of schedule.

Crown’s investment in carbon footprinting technology is helpingthe company achieve these targets. This process enables thecompany to measure the footprint of all products across itsrange, including the specification brands of Crown Trade,Sadolin and Sandtex Trade, and then make the necessarychanges to reduce the carbon output, without affecting thequality of the paint.

Mark Lloyd, Crown Paints’ Sustainability Manager, said: “Weare well on track with our green commitment; and results suchas the achievement of our zero waste to landfill target more than12 months ahead of schedule reflects the success of theprogramme to date. However, there’s still plenty to do and we

see sustainability as a mission for the entire organisation. It’snot just about filling a market niche; it’s about changing the waywe do business. Our focus is to minimise energy, reduce, re-useor recycle waste wherever feasible and develop continuousimprovement programmes and innovation initiatives to inspireproducts and processes with the lowest possible ecologicalimpact. All this is undertaken with an absolute commitment notto affect our products’ performance adversely. We also applyresponsible raw material sourcing, considering theenvironmental and ethical effects of raw materials used withinour business. Our focus is not to just provide a few niche ‘green’products. By measuring and evaluating the carbon footprint ofeverything we do, we can make improvements, withoutimpacting on the quality of the paint we produce. This meansspecifiers can be assured that they benefit from high performingquality paints, which maintain their protective and aestheticqualities for the longer term – in itself a sustainable outcome.”

Also at Ecobuild, Crown showed how achieving the rightspecification for commercial and industrial environments hasbeen made even easier with Crown Paints’ new online tool,PaintSpec Finder.®

The system generates tailor-made, accurate and technicallydetailed specifications in an accessible format, regardless of thecomplexity or size of the project.

VEKA records anastounding 2208tonne carbon savingMinimising environmental impacthas always been of the utmostimportance to VEKA, and eventhough the company already hasa string of environmental awardsunder its belt, the system supplieris constantly looking for new andinnovative ways to be as energyefficient as possible.

This dedication has certainly paidoff, as Sales and MarketingDirector Colin Torley explains:“Since 2008, we have workedtirelessly to develop and introduce

energy-saving measures that willmassively reduce our carbonfootprint. Through theimplementation of these measureswe have managed to save amassive 2208 tonnes of carbon

from being emitted, something weare obviously very proud of.

“Some of the changes we havemade include switching ourextrusion line motors from DC toAC, fitting variable speedcompressors on air lines on allextrusion tables, as well asmodifying cooling towers to giveenergy savings in water cooling.

“We also implemented an energymanagement system, so we nowhave an instant record of theelectricity each machine in thefactory consumes, and we haveenforced energy awarenesstraining for all operatives in thefactory.” enquiry 195

It goes without saying that youdon’t need to belong to anorganisation to be or to becomesustainable. Sika is certainly proofof that. Sustainability is at theforefront of our company missionstatement. We’ve cut energyconsumption by an impressive 30percent in the last few years. Andwe are a leading voice in the sectorswe work in, supporting industrybodies for concrete and roofing, andsitting on government advisorypanels for issues such as the latestbuilding regulations changes. So why did we feel the need to jointhe UK Green Building Council(UK-GBC)?

CRUCIAL ROLE

Well, for me, it is about Sika makinga firm commitment to sustainabilityin the built environment goingforwards. While there areadmittedly less noble reasons to join– namely, valuable networkingopportunities with key clients andsupply-chain partners –sustainability is the single biggestthing that will affect businesses inthe future. So, whether you’re abusiness leader trying to introducemore efficient manufacturing andworking practices, governmenttrying to achieve ambitious cuts inour nation’s carbon footprint – or

Building a sustainable future

TOGETHER

Construction products specialist Sika Limited has become the latestindustry body to become a member ofthe UK Green Building Council. Here, the company’s head of sustainability,Phil Jarratt, explains the attractions ofjoining forces to promote greenbuilding policy and practices, andencourages others to get on board.

simply an individual trying to do ‘their bit’ – it is betterthat we do those things together rather than in isolation.

Joining the UK-GBC was a significant commitment forSika, but it is already proving a worthwhile investmentand one that I’d recommend to my industry peers. Thecouncil was created to bring industry together and, importantly, to facilitate dialogue between industry andgovernment in its campaign for a sustainable builtenvironment. In truth, the positive changes and futureplans of a business like Sika are of little consequence atgovernment level. But, through the council, we are ableto join the conversation and get our voice heard.

Joining costs vary and so the membership is diverse, ranging from stalwarts of British business, such as JohnLewis, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s, to universities, main contractors and architectural firms of all shapesand sizes. Meetings and events are a melting pot of ideasand debate. The atmosphere is inclusive andcollaborative. As the Green Deal in particular comes intoforce, I’m certain member organisations will have acrucial role in voicing any concerns/issues related tothis controversial new initiative and in giving feedbackto government. Because when UK-GBC speaks on behalfof the industry, the government listens.

SHARING IDEAS

Another great benefit for members is the chance to shareideas and learn from each other’s experiences. Forinstance, Sika-Trocal, one of our roofing brands, wasasked recently by a local authority to recycle an 8,000sqm PVC roof at end of its life when being replaced withnew. But we couldn’t help because the facilities just don’texist to do that at present – there are only so manyrecycled traffic cones you can make!

But I believe that recycling and reusing materials, andreducing waste to landfill, is something we can alladdress if we get our heads together, so I brought theproblem up at a recent Construction ProductsAssociation (CPA) Sustainable Construction committeemeeting. As it transpired, plasterboard manufacturerBritish Gypsum had encountered a similar problem, buthad overcome it. So immediately you’ve started a forumthat can result in something beneficial.

As with anything in life – the more you put in, the moreyou get out. Sika was already making enormous stridesforward in, for example, reducing the amount of waterused in its manufacturing processes as well as theamounts of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) inadhesives and other products. But becoming a UK-GBCmember gives us the chance to become a proactive andexpert advisor on these issues.

Just as British Gypsum’s experience helped inform ourongoing efforts to address waste product recycling, whoknows how Sika’s research into, say, more radicalalternatives to VOCs will help in future?

Exciting progress is being made in the States with aninduction welding technique, which uses a magnetic-induction-activated tool to activate an adhesive that thenattaches the underside of the membrane. It’s a lot moreefficient and doesn’t use solvents. Likewise, Sika hasdeveloped additives that reduce the amount of water inthe production of concrete. Product longevity is anotherbig issue affecting the whole industry that we’re tryingto improve as well. But only by sharing our innovationsand expertise can we bring about widespread change.

FURTHERING THE CAUSE

Cutting-edge companies are increasingly identifyingthat not only complying with sustainable buildingmeasures but also proactively furthering this cause givesclients and consumers the peace of mind that you’reworking towards helping the planet.

Joining UK-GBC is a great way to show yourcommitment and work with other like-minded, leadingorganisations for the benefit of all. Yes, there are tangiblebusiness advantages for the cynics out there – access tothe latest news and education as well as associating withbig names – but none of us can escape the fact thatgovernment targets to achieve zero carbon homes by2016 must be met. We must act. And getting involvedwith UK-GBC seems, to me, a great place to cometogether to work towards just that.
