    Geographic position: in the south-east ofCentral Europe, north of Balkan Peninsula, onthe lower Danube.

    Neighbours:Romania neighbours to the Easton the Republic of Moldova, the Ukraine,the Black Sea; to the South on Bulgaria; tothe South and South-East onYugoslavia; tothe West on Hungary; and to the North onthe Ukraine.

    The population of the region consists of 2.250.565 inhabitants,representing 10.48% of the total population of the country.The network of localities includes 40 cities (of which 11 municipalities),408 communes and 2070 villages, placing Oltenia on the secondplace after North-East region in terms ofnumber of rural localities.

    RAILWAY NETWORK

    Oltenia has a railway network of 988km, representing 9.16% of the total atnational level.

    Electrified lines have a length of 507km, representing 51.31% of therailways that cross the region

    (compared to the national average of36.87%). Double track railways measure 248

    km (25.1% of total area, compared tothe national average of26.99%).

    The main electrified railway isBucharest-Timisoara, which crossesthe region from East to West, beingalso the only double track in theregion.

    The second in importance is Craiova-Simeria, which crosses the region fromSouth to North.

    PORTS AND AIRPORTSThe region has 5 Ports on the Danube: The ports of Orsova and Drobeta Turnu

    Severin (the largest Port in the region),Mehedinti county, the latter being tiedwith Serbia by a road and railway bridge.In both cities the headquarters of twomajor shipyards are located;

    The port ofCalafat, Dolj County. Here, a

    new bridge for crossing the Danubetowards Bulgaria is currently underconstruction;

    The port of Bechet, Dolj county, andCorabia, Olt county.

    Craiova International Airport: openthroughout the year. It offers anappropriate infrastructure, increased

    conditions for the arrival, departure andground handling of aircrafts in the nationaland/ or international traffic, airport servicesfor the transit of persons, goods and mail,as well as services of national publicinterest, while protecting environmentsnatural resources.

    In the South-Western part of Romania, the airport serves both for passenger traffic, as

    well as for aircraft movements.

    Area: Dolj County covers an area of 7414 square km,respectively 3,1% of Romanian territory, ranking the 7thplace, as size, in the country. Danube Rivercrosses thesouth of the county for a distance of150 km, forming atthe same time the border with Bulgaria.

    Dolj County population, as ofJuly 1st, 2009 was 705345inhabitants.

    Localities: in administrative terms, Dolj countyconsists of3 municipalities, Craiova residence of thecounty, Calafat and Bilesti, 4 cities, Segarcea, Filiasi,Bechet and Dabuleni, 104 communes and 380 villages.

    The reliefis dominated by the Romanian Plain (CmpiaRomn), but there are hilly areas in the north.

    The hydrographic network is represented by theDanube which flows between Cetate and Dbuleni, Jiuriver, which crosses the county from Filiasi to Zval fora distance of 154 km, lakes and ponds (Bistret Lake,Fntna Banului, Maglavit, Golenti, Ciuperceni)

    The climate is temperate with Mediterraneaninfluences, due to the south western position and the

    protection of the northern hills.

    THE AGRICULTURE OF DOLJ COUNTY Dolj County owns 3,1% of the total area

    and 3,9% of the agricultural area of thecountry.The agriculture provides most jobs andcounts as major part of countys grossdomestic product.

    Agricultural area covers 590.000 ha andapprox. 40 % of the agricultural land is

    very fertile (chernozem) DOMINANT CROPS : Cereals (wheat,

    rye, barley and two-rowed barley, maize),oilseeds (sunflower), sugar beet,potatoes and other vegetables,watermelons and yellow melons, vineswith grafted and native grapes.

    The county has a forest area of 81.500ha. Forests have a rich huntingbackground - deer, doe, fox, boar.

    OLT COUNTY Olt County has an area of5498 square kms and is

    located in the south, on the lower river that gave itsname.

    The landscape of Olt County belongs to the two mainunits, respectively Getic Plateau in the north,occupying one third of the surface and RomanianPlain(CampiaRomana) in the south, occupying twothirds.

    Mehedinti County is located on the left

    bank of the Danube, covering an areaof4900 square kilometers and isbordered by the following counties:Caras-Severin in the West, Gorj inNorth, Dolj in South-East and theBalkan countries (Serbia and Bulgaria)in the South. Thanks to its border, thecounty is considered the gateway to the

    WHAT IS ROP? The ROP stands forRegional Operational Programme and is one of

    the Romanian Operational Programmes agreed with the EU, and animportant tool for implementing the national strategy and policiesfor Regional Development. It applies to all 8 Romanian Regions.

    The global objective ofROP is to support and promote a sustainablebalanced economic and social development of the Romanian Regions,

    by improving business environment and infrastructure for economicgrowth. This means that the ROP aims to diminish the gaps ineconomic and social development between more and lessdeveloped regions of the Country.

    The total budget ofROP is approximately 4,4 Billion Euro for the firstseven years after accession (i.e. 2007-2013). EU funding represents

    approximately 84% of the ROP budget. The remaining comes fromnational funds, public (14%) and private (2%). For the South-West Oltenia Region, the financial allocation

    represents 14,01% of ROP (aprox. 621 MEuro)
