Oltenia has a railway network of 988km, representing 9.16% of the total atnational level.
Electrified lines have a length of 507km, representing 51.31% of therailways that cross the region
(compared to the national average of36.87%). Double track railways measure 248
km (25.1% of total area, compared tothe national average of26.99%).
The main electrified railway isBucharest-Timisoara, which crossesthe region from East to West, beingalso the only double track in theregion.
The second in importance is Craiova-Simeria, which crosses the region fromSouth to North.

PORTS AND AIRPORTSThe region has 5 Ports on the Danube: The ports of Orsova and Drobeta Turnu
Severin (the largest Port in the region),Mehedinti county, the latter being tiedwith Serbia by a road and railway bridge.In both cities the headquarters of twomajor shipyards are located;
The port ofCalafat, Dolj County. Here, a
new bridge for crossing the Danubetowards Bulgaria is currently underconstruction;

Craiova International Airport: openthroughout the year. It offers anappropriate infrastructure, increased

Area: Dolj County covers an area of 7414 square km,respectively 3,1% of Romanian territory, ranking the 7thplace, as size, in the country. Danube Rivercrosses thesouth of the county for a distance of150 km, forming atthe same time the border with Bulgaria.

THE AGRICULTURE OF DOLJ COUNTY Dolj County owns 3,1% of the total area
and 3,9% of the agricultural area of thecountry.The agriculture provides most jobs andcounts as major part of countys grossdomestic product.
Agricultural area covers 590.000 ha andapprox. 40 % of the agricultural land is

WHAT IS ROP? The ROP stands forRegional Operational Programme and is one of
the Romanian Operational Programmes agreed with the EU, and animportant tool for implementing the national strategy and policiesfor Regional Development. It applies to all 8 Romanian Regions.
The global objective ofROP is to support and promote a sustainablebalanced economic and social development of the Romanian Regions,
by improving business environment and infrastructure for economicgrowth. This means that the ROP aims to diminish the gaps ineconomic and social development between more and lessdeveloped regions of the Country.
The total budget ofROP is approximately 4,4 Billion Euro for the firstseven years after accession (i.e. 2007-2013). EU funding represents
approximately 84% of the ROP budget. The remaining comes fromnational funds, public (14%) and private (2%). For the South-West Oltenia Region, the financial allocation
represents 14,01% of ROP (aprox. 621 MEuro)
