• From the amount of people unemployed, economists find the Unemployment rate (Ue) defined as percentage of people out of work – Jobless– Actively seeking work
Calculation :(Unemployed x 100%) ___________________
Labour force

Keywords – Unemployment, voluntary, frictional, seasonal, structural & cyclical unemployment.
Measures
• Macroeconomic objective is low unemployment. Is FULL EMPLOYMENT POSSIBLE? (3% Ue)
• Labour Force Survey (LFS)– The ONS surveys 60,000 households on type of employment;
earnings and Ue. – Published every month using International Labour
Organisation definition of Ue. (UN body)
• Claimant Count – Montlhy count of those claiming Ue benefits. – JSA

UK Unemployment (LFS) and the claimant count, 1992-2002
Explain why there is a difference between the two curves

Difficulties
• LFS captures more people as some are Ue, but not entitled to benefits. – ‘Doing the Double’ – Working and benefits– Under 18 out of school
• Which is better for International comparisons?
• Claimant count is relatively inexpensive and quick to assemble
