I.E.S. “VIRGEN DE LA ESPERANZA”
2
HABITATS AND ECOSYSTEMS
An ecosystem is a community of plants,
animals and smaller organisms that live, feed,
reproduce and interact in the same area or
environment. Some ecosystems are very large.
For example, many bird species nest in one place
and feed in a completely different area. On the
other hand, some ecosystems may be physically
small, such as you would find in a meadow at the
edge of a forest, or in a coral reef in the ocean. How
does everything fit together in a forest ecosystem
versus a meadow ecosystem? While some
species may be found naturally in both areas,
the species that live in the forest ecosystem are
usually very different from those that inhabit the
meadow, even though the two environments are
right next to each other. In other words, if we
protect existing natural habitats, we will help to
maintain biodiversity (biodiversity is the
variety of life in all its forms, levels and
combinations). Unfortunately, natural habitats
and their ecosystems are more and more endangered because of the damaging environmental
effects of growing human populations everywhere.
All living things need energy to
stay alive. This energy comes from the
sun. Plants make their food from energy
from the sun. Animals get their energy
from the food they eat. Animals depend
on other living things for food. Some
animals eat plants while others eat other
animals. This passing of energy from the
sun to plants to animals to
other animals is called a FOOD
CHAIN.

What is a Biome?
A biome is a large geographical area of distinctive plant and animal groups, which are
adapted to that particular environment. The climate and geography of a region determines what
type of biome can exist in that region. Major biomes include deserts, forests, grasslands, tundra, and
several types of aquatic environments. Each biome consists of many ecosystems whose communities
have adapted to the small differences in climate and the environment inside the biome.
All living things are closely related to their environment. Any change in one part of an
environment, like an increase or decrease of a species of animal or plant, causes a ripple effect of
change in through other parts of the environment.
The earth includes a huge variety of living things, from complex plants and animals to very
simple, one-celled organisms. But large or small, simple or complex, no organism lives alone. Each
depends in some way on other living and nonliving things in its surroundings.

Interdependence of plants and animals:
The two principal groups of the living organisms are plants and animals. From the early
phase of the evolution, both of the communities have lived together side by side. In a stable
ecosystem the plants and animals can able to form a delicate nutritional interdependence which
with minor fluctuations is rebalanced fairly rapidly.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY:
Jacques Perrin y Jacques Cluzaud.

cimento dell'armonia e
dell'inventione, Op. 8. Se trata de
una obra descriptiva o programática
que evoca, a través de elementos de
lenguaje musical, distintos aspectos
protagonistas sean animales o plantas de un mismo ecosistema;
