RATIONALE Ectoparasitism is a very common problem in dogs. They cause severe irritation resulting in skin lesions, rough hair coat, debility and even death if left untreated. In response to this increasing problem,the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of DMMMSU formulated the following Botanical Soap: Kakawate (Gliricidia sepium) leaf extract soap (KLES)is 99.98% effective in eliminating mites of dogs which is comparable to the commercial preparation 99.79% (Heruela, 2007). It also hastens wound healing, relieves itching, slightly checks growth of bacteria and is considered the most effective scabicide. It also has anticoagulant and insecticidal properties. Natural coco (Cocos nucifera) oil (70%) soap (NCOS) has proven its versatility against ectoparasites of dogs which is 100% efficient in eliminating mites comparable to the commercial anti- mange soap (Mamuag,2007). Aside from killing mites, it kills ticks, lice and fleas. It also heals wounds, eliminates doggie odor, adds luster and softness to haircoat.
