One-syllable words: -ed and –ing = If the word ends in a c-v-c pattern,

it gets a double consonant + -ed or + -ing. Examples:

rub = rubbed hop = hopping

Two-syllable words: -ed and –ing = If the stress is on the first syllable, the word only gets one consonant + -ed and –ing.

Examples: visit = visited

enter = entering -ed and -ing = If the stress is on the second syllable, the word gets a double consonant + -ed or –ing

Examples: admit = admitted begin = beginning

Rule 2: Words ending in –e

-ed = If the word ends in –e, add –ed.

-ing= If the word ends in –e, drop the e and add –ing.

Examples: smile = smiled

skate = skating

Rule 3: Words ending in –y

Consonant + y: -ed = If the word ends in –y, and has a consonant

before it, change the –y to –i and + -ed. –ing = If the word ends in –y, and has a consonant

before it, just add –ing. Examples:

marry= married carry= carrying

vowel before it, add –ed or –ing. Examples:

play= played say= saying

Words ending in 2 vowels + a consonant: -ed and –ing = If the word ends in 2 vowels + a

consonant, add –ed or –ing. Examples:

rain= rained read= reading
