The simple pleasures in a vegboxI have been receiving a weekly vegbox from Riverford Organics for several months now as an experiment and the experience has been most enjoyable.

Every week I check what’s in the box online and then arrange my other shopping around it. And what has surprised me is how creative it has made me in the kitchen. I have discovered new and delicious vegetables and learned new ways to cook.

I might be easy to please, but I do get a thrill when I open my front door and there is a lovely box of healthy shiny fruit and vegetables on the doorstep.

This week, for example I have cherries, bananas and satsumas for the fruit bowl, and broad beans in their shells, mushrooms, romano peppers, tomatoes, swiss chard and courgettes. Some weeks I get more ordinary vegetables like onions, potatoes and carrots but the contents of the box varies

completely from week to week.

Also within the box there is usually a recipe card which includes a few suggested recipes for this week’s veg.

Riverford has loads of different veg and fruit boxes to choose from, I have gone for the medium fruit and veg box which seems to be working out just fine. You can also add other things into your box – last week I bought some lovely organic ham, sheep’s cheese and home-made homity pies.

I like getting a vegbox because I feel immense satisfaction feeding my family healthy, nutritious food. And having it delivered to my door certainly beats dragging my children round the supermarket!

Tooth WhiteningIf you have ever wondered about tooth whitening then wonder no more, local dental surgeon Dr Ahmed Farooq explains all.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a process used to chemically alter the colour of teeth. This is achieved by removing stains and discolouration by adding a whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) to the tooth surface. This results in the tooth looking whiter and gives an overall more youthful appearance.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

The dazzling movie star teeth that you might see on TV are not a natural colour. Just because your teeth aren’t as white as those Hollywood smiles, do not assume that they are discoloured. There is a natural variation in the colour of teeth from person to person.

Age and lifestyle factors are the main reasons for tooth discolouration. As you get older, the teeth become darker

due to natural erosion and exposure of the inner surface of the teeth (dentine), which is darker. The gums also recede with age, showing more root surface, which again tends to be a darker colour. The foods and drinks we consume also play a part. Drinks like red wine, tea and coffee can cause staining. Tar and nicotine from cigarette smoke are also major contributors.

How white will my teeth become with chemical whitening?

The answer to this question is dependant on several factors. To start off with, as mentioned earlier, our age, lifestyle and natural tooth colour varies. For this reason, the effects of tooth whitening will vary. Most people, however, will respond very well to whitening treatments depending on what method is used. There are a small group of individuals who may only notice a small difference. The best person to advise you on your likely result

Page 17: ED August 2012

17Please mention Edgbaston Directory when responding to adverts

will be your dentist. They will note your tooth colour before starting treatment, and they will try to estimate an outcome.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Tooth whitening is very safe when used under careful instructions from the dentist.

The agent used comes in a gel form, which should not come into contact with the gums, as this may cause discoloration or burns. Most people experience no adverse reactions, but some patients may develop some sensitivity around the time of treatment depending on the strength of agent and method used. This can be easily resolved by using some sensitive toothpaste to mask the effect and by avoiding hot or cold food for 48 hours.

What are the benefits of tooth whitening?

Whitening is now relatively cheap and easily accessible from your dentist. The main benefit is a healthier looking smile without removing any of the tooth structure. Whitening is a much more conservative approach to changing a smile compared to crowns and veneers, as these methods result in changing the shape of the tooth.

Inspirational Midlands arts venue turns 50The Midlands’ most popular arts centre, mac Birmingham, officially launched its 50th anniversary celebrations in July with the opening of The Playmakers, a brand new exhibition which reflects the centre’s history.

Since opening in 1962, mac has welcomed millions of visitors and artists from both round the corner and around the world. The latest exhibition, The Playmakers (Sat 7 Jul – Sun 9 Sep), has been created by Japanese artists KOSUGE1-16 to draw from mac Birmingham’s past – from its beginnings as the UK’s first arts centre for children and young people, and an internationally-respected creative hub for experimental puppetry to its present-day ethos of providing arts for all in a culturally rich and diverse city and region.

The interactive installation encourages children and adults to play with lots of cause-and-effect features such as life-size puppets of John English and his wife Alicia (Mollie) Randle, who initiated mac as a cultural institution.

The Playmakers is the first part of ‘mac at fifty’ - a special programme of events, activities and exhibitions to mark the centre’s 50th year.

mac birmingham has played an integral part in supporting emerging creative artists across all art forms including many familiar faces such as the Blackadder star and presenter, Tony Robinson, director Mike Leigh, Hustle actor Adrian Lester and television presenter Alison Hammond.

Dorothy Wilson MBE, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of mac birmingham commented, “mac birmingham is celebrating 50 years of inspiring artists, communities, businesses and audiences. This is a perfect opportunity to shine a light on all that is best and lasting of the centre’s focus on providing unparalleled opportunities for creativity. mac really is for everyone - a gateway to the arts.”

Make a difference to the work of your churchHow you can make a lasting difference to the work of your church? Perhaps you could consider a legacy in your will.

The Diocese of Birmingham has published a helpful leaflet encouraging giving to the Church by means of legacies. Bishop David advises that more the 500 people each year leave a gift in their will to support the Church of England in the Birmingham region. These gifts make a significant impact on mission across the diocese and reflect the spirit of generosity that is a hallmark of Christians. Legacies help in so many different ways, from ensuring that there is clergy living and working in the most disadvantaged areas, to maintaining the beautiful buildings.

Making a will and reviewing it regularly makes good practical sense too. It gives you peace of mind and ensures your wishes are known and carried out after

your death. Drawing up a will and leaving a gift to your church is a simple thing to do but will have far-reaching benefits for you, your loved ones and the church.

Although people may have good intentions about will making and legacy giving, too many don’t get around to it. If you would like help with setting out a will or updating a will please contact Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston.

Martineau Gardens Wins Best Green Space Award A Community Garden and oasis for wildlife, in Edgbaston, Martineau Gardens has been recognised as one of the best community run green spaces in the country by winning a prestigious Green Pennant Award.

Green Flag Community Awards recognise and reward the best community run green parks in the country and Martineau Gardens stood out after impressing the inspector. The Gardens were judged against eight criteria: a welcoming place; healthy safe and secure; clean and well maintained; sustainability; biodiversity and heritage; community involvement; management and achievements.

The community gardens, though only two miles from Birmingham city centre, are a green oasis that is teeming with wildlife. There’s plenty for visitors to explore including woodland, glass houses, a formal garden, an orchard, vegetable plots, a wildflower meadow, a pond, a wildlife area with SLINC status and a ‘Shipwreck’ children’s play area. The Gardens also run

an annual events programme and sell plants, produce and jams.

Caroline Hutton, Director, Martineau Gardens said: “Martineau Gardens are community-run gardens open free to the public. This award is a tribute to the dedication of our volunteers who work hard to keep it a beautiful and tranquil spot for Birmingham people to come and relax in.”

Martineau Gardens are open Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm and are free entry. The Gardens are at 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7UG. Located five minutes from the MAC and opposite the Priory Hospital.

Urban Veg: growing food in the cityThe UK is fast becoming one of the heaviest countries in the world. With growing levels of obesity one of the most challenging health obstacles, creating a new culture of food and food production is one way of tackling the problem.

An exciting new project at Winterbourne House and Garden is taking a serious look at the issues behind this health crisis. Urban Veg aims to promote a culture of urban food production as a means to address the impact that poor diet and obesity can have on social exclusion and public health.

Through short and in depth training courses, drop in sessions, and demonstrations, all aimed at a broad mixture of people from all ages and backgrounds, Urban Veg will introduce concepts of conservation, sustainability and increased well-being, through outdoor activity and social interaction. The benefits of this project will stretch beyond health, with tips

on how growing your own food can save you money in the long run.

Urban Veg began as a smaller project working with people from local Islamic communities in Winterbourne’s garden. It was immensely successful and the idea has grown. Now, rather than an emphasis on providing allotment or public growing spaces, the aim is to educate and raise awareness with a centre of excellence and an online library of resources.

Championing the project is Urban Food journalist Alys Fowler. Alys’s enthusiasm for this subject knows no bounds and she brings to the table her own knowledge which she will share as one of the team of tutors. “Our cities need local, healthy food that will nourish both us and our environment. In some ways Urban Veg has a very simple concept; that of teaching people to grow good food, but it aims

to be much more. The health of our cities depends on how we tackle these issues and I am very excited about this project’s potential,” she said.

Urban Veg will also be working with the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Obesity, local schools and community groups as well as NHS City Hospital’s Community Garden initiative.

The project will be officially launched in September 2012 as part of the Brum Dine with me EU Researchers day with a Harvest Festival of demonstrations and activities.
