It is with great pleasure that I get to welcome you to the 2016 SDA National Convention, EDSymposium16, in Cincinnati, Ohio. For those of us who manage, market, advance, streamline,

protect, and regulate firms in the A/E/C industry, this conference is for you.

The EDS16 Committee, but mainly Stephanie Kirschner, has worked hard and long to provide another convention within a 6 month period from the one in Golden, CO last October. We are excited to have the Annual Business Meeting, Installation of the 2016 – 2017 National Officers, and the Awards Banquet back on track and during a time when we are all together.

Starting off the convention is an all-day interactive and instructive Pre-Conference Leadership workshop where you can learn about behaviors that can be developed and enhanced to enable us to make the highest and best use of our strengths.

Throughout the long weekend you can earn over 12 hours of continuing education from a variety of topics presented by a dynamic line-up of speakers. You can also participate in a fun ‘Speed Networking’ event where you will make 15 new connections. And we hope you’ll have some fun and take advantage of the walking tour of the historic area of downtown Cincinnati.

For those of you who have not had a chance to attend convention, or those of you who attend every year, I invite you to join us in Cincinnati, Ohio!

Natalie Newman 2015-2016 National President YOU! Make a Difference

History of Cincinnati President‐ElectMessage

EDSymposium16

Outside of the state of Texas, Cincinnati, Ohio, is the most chili-crazed city in the United States. Cincinnati prides itself on being a true chili capital, with more than 180 chili parlors. Cincinnati Chili is quite different from its more familiar Texas cousin, and it has developed a cult-like popularity. What makes it different is the way the meat is cooked. Cincinnati Chili has a thinner consistency and is prepared with an unusual blend of spices that includes cinnamon, chocolate or cocoa, allspice, and Worcestershire. This is truly the unofficial grub of Cincinnati. The people of Cincinnati enjoy their chili spooned over freshly made pasta and topped with a combination of chopped onions, shredded Cheddar cheese, refried beans or kidney beans, and crushed oyster crackers. If you choose "the works," you are eating what they call Five-Way Chili. Make sure to pile on the toppings - that's what sets it apart from any other chili dish. To test a restaurant for authenticity, ask for a Four-Way. If the server asks you whether you want beans or onions, you know this is fake Cincinnati chili, since Four-Way always comes with onions. Macedonian immigrant Tom Kiradjieff created Cincinnati chili in 1922. With his brother, John, Kiradjieff opened a small Greek restaurant called the Empress. The restaurant did poorly however, until Kiradjieff started offering a chili made with Middle Eastern spices, which could be served in a variety of ways. He called it his "spaghetti chili." Kiradjieff's "five way" was a concoction of a mound of spaghetti topped with chili, chopped onion, kidney beans, and shredded yellow cheese, served with oyster crackers and a side order of hot dogs topped with more shredded cheese.

I’ve been doing some research on our host city, and this is what I found . . . these people love to eat! A German dish called Glier’s Goetta, a meat-and-grain sausage primarily composed of ground meat (mainly pork), pin-head oats and spices is highly recommended. Along with a grilled-cheese doughnut from Tom + Chee. Apparently they eat crepes with their hands at Just Crepes. And Papas Cream Eggs put Cadbury to shame. Graeter’s Ice Cream is known as “manna from Heaven”. We already discussed the chili. Izzy's has a 110 Reuben challenge. You can get Cincinnati-grown pizza at La Rosa’s. And King’s Island has to die for blueberry soft serve. Montgomery Inn BBQ sauce has taken the title of “liquid crack”. And cookies purchased at the Busken Bakery can predict the next President. Who knew? Besides food there is a lot to see in Cincinnati. Home to an 85 acre zoo and botanical garden. Railway buffs will love the 25,000 square feet of indoor model train displays. They have many museums from the Taft Museum of Art to the Cincinnati Art Museum that features the Queen City’s rich heritage and admission is free! The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The Cincinnati Museum Center which houses a history and science museum. And the Contemporary Arts Center. For the sports enthusiasts The Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds complete with a baseball shrine. And the Paul Brown Stadium where the Bengals play. If you like to shop there’s Findlay Market, built in the mid-19th century featuring crafts and fresh produce. If you just want to get out and walk, try the Purple People Bridge that leads you into Kentucky to an indoor-outdoor entertainment complex. A lot of these places are close enough to get to on foot. Others will require a car ride. I hope this gives you some ideas on how you can spend your free time

LeadershipWorkshop Separate Registration Fee Thursday, May 12th

What Can You Learn from the 1960s Race to the Moon?

Research shows that effective, ethical leaders are not "born" (it’s not genetics) –nor are they “anointed” (it’s not by title). Leadership is behavior - behaviors can be developed and enhanced in each and every human. A leader resides inside each of us just waiting to be developed, encouraged and set free to serve. This interactive & instructive workshop uses the 1960's Race to the Moon as a metaphor. This decade-long true story is told in leadership terms -through descriptions, pictures, transcripts and videos. Still inspiring today, this is a story of vision and values; challenges–expected and unexpected; teamwork and leadership. Learning Outcomes – at the end of this workshop participants will understand:

There is a leader in every one of us waiting to be developed Ways to meet challenges stated and unexpected 5 practices of extraordinary leadership Specific actions that can immediately be taken back to the office

In advance of the workshop participants will receive instructions and URL to complete an online 15-min VIA Character Strengths survey. After completing the online Character Strengths survey participants will download their personal report and bring that to the workshop. During an interactive series of exercises, workshop participants will learn how to better understand and put to use their unique strengths …similar to strengths of many involved in the race to the moon. Throughout the workshop participants will engage in interactive exercises and group discussions, with a focus on aspects of leadership that will provide experiential means to better learn about ethical and effective leadership. Each participant will receive a workbook for note taking, to complete exercises, and to document their commitments to action as soon as they return to their office.

8:30 am - 9:30 am Keynote Breakfast—From Vacant to Vibrant: Cincinnati’s Urban Transformation Downtown Cincinnati has been getting some attention for its budding renaissance, and the recent interest is well deserved. The new vibrancy is primarily a result of two redevelopment projects; a riverfront development called The Banks in the southernmost section of downtown; and a neighborhood revitalization project located directly north of the central business district in Cincinnati’s the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. The success of these two projects has brought a bustle of new retail, restaurant, and residential options, which both Cincinnatians and tourists alike have taken to. Join us as we hear how the City of Cincinnati worked for over a decade to bring these projects to fruition and put new energy and activity into the entire downtown Cincinnati area.

In the first game ever played by a professional baseball team (all paid players, no amateurs), the Cincinnati Red Stockings beat the Mansfield Independents, 48-14 on June 1st 1869. The Cincinnati Base Ball Club played the entire season with all of its players under contract. The total salary outlay was approximately $11,000, with the salary of star shortstop George Wright at nearly $2,000. Thus began the era of professional baseball, and professional team sports. The 1869 Red Stockings made history not only as the first professional club, but they also ran off the longest winning streak in baseball history. Although there was no league yet established, there were some 15 teams in the upper tier of clubs. The Red Stockings defeated all of these teams, many of them twice, while they also walloped a number of lesser clubs. Their final official record was 57-0.
