TheTOPBOUNDARYiswherethestreamenterstheriverattheCORNERPOOL–asmallchannelaboutthreequartersofthewayacrosstheriver–worthafewcasts,particularlywhenGrilsearerunning.(‘IcaughtmyfirstSalmontherefromtheoppositebankin1951!–itwas14lbs,Iwas15yearsold’,WVG)
UPPER,MIDDLEandLOWERVIADUCTSTREAMS:thebestflywaterfrommid-AprilandexcellentTroutwater.A lowwaterpool–becarefulnot towadeout too farasmostof the fish takeonoursideof thestreams,often‘onthedangle’.
2. THEMEADOWFishliefromunderneaththeelectricitywiresdowntothetopofTHEFALLSbutespeciallyunderthetreesbyBROWNOWLCAVE(theoldboathousecarvedintothesandstone)–adeceivinglylongcast.
3. THEFALLSGoodtroutwater.WhentheriverisverylowyoucanwadeacrosstherocksontopofTHEFALLSandfishthefarstream,althoughthisisnotrecommendedforthefainthearted!Pleaserememberthatwadingisinherentlydangerous.OtherwisecrosstheMILLRACE(foregroundoftoppicture)andfishthenearsiderun.(The foam in the bottomphotograph, foreground, is causedby the alkaline tributary of the RiverLowthermixingwiththemoreacidwatersoftheEdenandEamont.Itisnotpollution!)
4. LONGMEGAhighwaterpool. Oneof themanyholdingpoolsandagoodspringpool. Pre-1966(whenEdenstocksweredevastatedbyulcerativedermalnecrosisorUDNdisease)itwasestimatedLONGMEGheldwellover100Salmon.Thepoolfishesallthewaydown,dependingonthetimeofyearandtheheightofthewater.It isworthstartinghighupasfishcanlieinthetopnearside‘V’(extremerightofpicture).Insummerlowwater,asshown,youcanwadetothemiddlerockandfishthefarstream.Thefarside‘V’canholdSeaTroutfromearlyJune.

5. THEBATHINGROCKThislieisatthetailofLONGMEG.Themainhighwaterlieisonthesubmergedsandstoneslabinthecentreoftheriverbetweentheactualbathingrock,morevisibleinthebottompicture,andourbank.
6. THESANDBANKAgoodspringhighwaterpoolandalsoaKelthole.Aspringspinningpool(ifyoumust).Alongcastsquareatthetopcanbesuccessful-alsowherethestreamcomesintotheriverontheoppositebank.Inlowwater,fishrightdowntheglide,therunintoTHECAVESpool.
TheAldertreeinthepicturehasnowbeenwashedawayinafloodsocastingisaloteasier.
7. THECAVESAlowwaterpool.Fishmostlytakeofftheslopingshelfonthefarsideandatthetail.
8. THETHREEROCKSAhighwaterpool,namedafterthethreerocksontheoppositeside. ThebigrockinthecentreisnicknamedSkiddaw.TheidealheightseemstobewhenSkiddawis1footoutofthewater(it’sabitmoreinthephotograph!).Fishgenerallytakeinthemidstreambutsometimeslieveryclosetooursidearoundthenewlies.
Thepoolfishesallthewaydowntotheglide,whichneedsfishingcarefully,intoJOHNSTONE’Spool.
9. JOHNSTONE’SNamedafteraone-timeownerofEdenLacy.Thepoolholdstherecordforthebeat:34lbs(fromtheoppositebank).The best casts are at the neck, off the bend on the far side, around the rock in the centre andparticularly,intheautumn,atthetailofthepoolbeforeitentersTHEWILLOWSstream.
10. THEWILLOWSThisusedtobeoneofthemostprolificpoolsonthebeat(pre-UDN)andnowisbeginningtoyieldnumbersoffishagainfrombothbanks.Don’tbetemptedtowalkoutalongtherockstofishtheneck–you’llfrightenoffanyfish.Fishesatallheights.
11. LOWERWILLOWSAhighwaterpoolonly–exceptforTrout.Thereareafewbigbouldersafewmetresout. Thefishcanrestaroundthem,particularlyafterafloodandwhentheyarerunning.Startabout10metresbelowthetree(inthephotograph)andfishdowntotheroughwater.Itdoesnotrequirealongcast.
12. THEPOST&ISLANDFOOTTHEPOSTalwaysreferredtotheprolificTrout(andGrayling)wateratthetopofthisstretch.Thereusedtobeanoldpostintheriver.ISLANDFOOTisaparticularlygoodautumnstreamwithhalfadozenSalmonshowingfrequently.Itfishesallthewaydown,asfarasyoucanwade–andbeyond!ItisalsoexcellentwaterforTroutandprobablySeaTrout.
13. DALERAVENPronouncedDal-raffen;thelovelyNorsenameforthebeckthatenterstheriveratthetailofthepool.ThisisanexcellentTrout(andSeaTrout)stretch.TheSalmonlieunderthefarbank,fishdowntotherun-off.Itisbestfishedonafallingriverandisadeepbutrelativelyeasywadeatthetop-butdon’twadeouttoofar.
14. THEMAINS&THEWALLOneofthebestflystretchesandfishesatmostheightsandtimesofyear.ItisexcellentforTrout,particularlythefarsideatthetopofthestream.Salmon lie fromthe largeSycamore tree (on theotherbank)all thewaydown,dependingon theheightofthewater.StarthigherupinthefastwaterwhenGrilsearerunning.THEWALLreferstothestretchwherethebanksupportwallstartsontheoppositebankallthewaydowntothebig‘boil’(asubmergedrock)whichisthebeginningoftheGRAVELBED.Fishliedownthefarsideneartheoppositebank–anotherdeepeasywadeatthetopisneededtocovertheliesproperlybutthendrawintooursideasyouprogressdowntothebottomofthepool.Fishlieaboveandinfrontandjustoffthebigboil!
15. THEGRAVELBEDAlovelypool,particularlyintheautumn,andourbottomboundary.Themaintakingplacesarejustaboveandthefarsideofthemainboilinthecentreoftheriver;oppositethelargewillowonoursideandthenallthewaydownuntiltheline‘dies’.ItisalsoverygoodwaterforTroutandGraylingandprobablyalsoforSeaTrout.Generallyahighwaterpool,itisbestfishedforrestingsalmonafterariseinthewaterandwhenitisdroppingagain.

THEHUTisthereforyouruse.Pleaseleaveitasyoushouldfindit,i.e.sweptoutreadyforthenextpersonandallrubbishremoved.
FISHINGistobeconductedatalltimesinasportingandgentlemanlymanner.
Preferably,fishingshouldbeFLYONLYbutspinningwithartificialluresispermittedfrombelowtheviaducttothebottomofIslandFootpool.
Worms,shrimpsorprawnsareforbiddenatalltimes.
Asthepresentbye-lawsstate,allsalmoncaughtbeforethe15thJunearetobereturnedandafterthatwewouldpreferCATCH&RELEASEtobepractisedunlessitisa‘firstfish’oryouarehungry!
Eitherway,wemustreturnaminimumof60%ofallsalmoncaught.
Pleasebesparingwiththetroutandgraylingtoo,thoughabracetobetakenisperfectlyacceptable.
CARS:Pleaseleavethembythewhite‘ScoutGate’.Thereisagoodtracktothebottomofthebeatbutpleasebesensibleandnotuseitinverywetweather.Novehiclesaretobedriventothehutitself,i.e.fromTheWillowsup,asitisanareaofimportanceforwildflowers.
NODOGSpleasenowthatmuchoftheriveredgeisfencedoffforfloraandfauna.Pleasedonotpickthewildflowers.

EdenLacyfishingcomprises1.8milesoftheleftbank.Itisoneofthemostattractivebeatsontheriver comprising 12 named pools with a fishing hut set amongst a wooded and wild flower areaopposite therenownedLacy’sCaves. It isan idealplaceto ‘getaway from itall’and,beingsomedistancefromanypublicroad,issecludedandprivate.Thewholestretchaboundsinwildlife.
ItiswonderfulwildbrowntroutwaterwithsomeexceptionalgraylingfishingafterOctober14th.Thesalmonfishingcanberewardingthroughouttheseason,butparticularlyfromAugustonwards.WhenAvailable:Althoughessentiallyletonadayperweekbasis,dayticketsaresometimesavailable-particularlyforgraylingfishingafterOctober14thandoccasionallyatothertimessopleasecheckfordetails.Access:Thereisgoodvehicularaccesstomostpools,whicharepredominatelyflyfishingonly.Thewadingwithchestwadersismostlygood.Contact&bookings:VictorGubbins t:01768898316
River Eden CatchmentCumbriahasmorefishingwatersthananyothercountyinEngland,withtheRiverEdenatitsheart.ItisconsideredoneofthebestsalmonriversinthenorthofEnglandandholdstherecordforthelargestfly-caughtsalmoninthecountry.Thewildtroutprovidearealchallenge,especiallyonsomeoftheremotepartsoftheriver,andtheabundanceofgraylingmeansthatyoucanenjoyfishingtheEdenallyearround!CoarseanglerscanfindChubandDaceontheriversandPike,PerchandRoachonthestillwaters.

Eden Valley Fishing TheRiverEdenCatchmentcoverssome2,500squarekilometres;itisoneofthemostgeologicallyandbotanicallydiverserivercatchmentsintheUK.AgianthorseshoeshapedbandoflimestoneextendsfromthesourceaboveKirkbyStephen,openingontotheCarlisleandSolwayPlainintheNorth.ThetributariesdrainingthislimestonearesomeofthemostproductiveintheEdenCatchment.
In the far west of the valley are the north eastern fells of the Lake District National Park, theHaweswaterReservoir(freefishing)andUllswater(morefreefishing),northofwhicharetheCaldbeckFells.
TheEasternflanksofEdenlieintheNorthPennines,stretchingnorthwardsfromtheYorkshireDalesNationalParktoHadrian’sWall.
TheRiverEdenandtributariesisaSiteofSpecialScientificInterestandaSpecialAreaofConservation,home to European Otter (Lutra lutra), Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar), White Clawed Crayfish(Austropotamobiuspallipes),BrookLamprey(Lampetraplaneri),RiverLamprey(Lampetrafluviatilis),Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), the Water-Crowfoots (Ranunculus sp.) and Alluvial AlderWoodland(Alnussp.).
