Winter 2022

2 Program details at edenprairie.org/Register

Maintaining beautiful parks and providing

for the health, wellness and recreational needs of our community is what drives our team!

This winter, let us make a difference in your life! Go hiking and do some nature photography in one of our parks, grab your ice skates or sled (or borrow free equipment from us) and head to Staring Lake Park for some outdoor family fun. Or try a new fitness routine or swim laps

at the Community Center. Whatever you choose, we hope you’ll continue to make Parks and Recreation an important part of your Eden Prairie story.

ADAPTIVE PROGRAMSThe City of Eden Prairie is

committed to enhancing the

quality of life for people of

all ages and abilities.

Adaptive Recreation programs are designed for individuals with disabilities to enhance social and physical skills, self-esteem and independence. Led by trained recreation specialists and qualified staff, these programs build skills and foster positive relationships.

Inclusion Services provide support and accommodations for individuals with disabilities to participate fully in all recreation activities. Support may come in the form of staff training, program adaptations, modified equipment or an inclusion companion. Requests must be received at least three weeks before the program start date.

Contact Nicole Weedman, senior recreation supervisor, at [email protected] or 952-949-8456 to learn more.

Our son Henry, a Junior at Eden Prairie High School, has participated in several adaptive programs offered by Eden Prairie

Parks & Recreations over the years. A child with special needs is often found isolated from activities and friendships involving their typical peers as they start entering middle school, so adaptive programming is crucial in supporting the physical, emotional and social well-being of our children. Aside from the wonderful programming, the staff are amazing. They are well trained and passionate about working with kids with special needs. As a parent, the programs also offer a great way to connect with other families for support, resources and friendship. The city

has been wonderful in reaching out to families for input into their programming and adapting the programming to meet the needs and interests of our kids, too. We are fortunate to live in Eden Prairie and to have access to such wonderful programs! Thank you!

– Lynda Whittemore

An really enjoys every moment of swimming lessons at the Eden Prairie Community Center. He is learning a lot, not only the swimming skills but also about safety. The instructors are young, talented, communicative and patient with kids. We cannot say enough good things about the instructors and the environment EPCC has brought to us. EPCC is tremendous. We greatly appreciate the instructors and the lifeguards.

“Here For Beer” was established in 1979 as a group of friends coming together to play softball. Some ladies have been friends since high school, some gals joined the team as free agents or by pure chance. 42 years later this group has gone through marriages, divorces, births, deaths, graduations, moves, illness, business openings, job changes and all the other events that accompany a rich, full life. As people pass in and out of life’s challenges the group has maintained its strength by making sure to come together once a week around sports. We may not win every game, but we always have fun. These past few years have been challenging for everyone, but the weekly team activities always lighten our mood. I’m so glad to have meet such a wonderful group of ladies and have such a strong community that promotes active, positive, engaging opportunities. Love you ladies!!!

Fraud – Don’t let it Happen to You

After moving to Eden Prairie from California in 2011, I knew that I had to do something to get integrated into the community. Both my son and daughter live in the area; however, they both had families and jobs, so I knew it was unrealistic to depend upon them for any social life. A Google search turned up the Eden Prairie Senior Center, and little did I know this was about to change my life.

I was delighted to see all the activities available but most of all Bridge! One of my retirement goals was to become a better Bridge player, and fortunately, the Center had weekly Bridge games and Bridge classes. Everyone was welcoming and helpful in sharing everything that was going on in the senior community.

In addition, I discovered many things of interest among all the activities, learned how to play Pickleball, and met great new friends, many of whom I share life experiences today.

Ultimately, wanting to give back, I joined the Senior Council and served as President for three years.

However, the most important interest was my now husband! Steve was a Bridge player, and I noticed him at one of the meal functions, engaged him in conversation, and the rest is history. We have been married almost eight years and still play a great deal of Bridge. Thanks to the Senior Center, my life has been forever changed!

– Rita and Steve Stensgaard
