+ Call to Worship Leader: We worship the God who inhabits our world and indwells our lives.

People: We need not look up to find God, we need only look around:

Leader: Within ourselves, beyond ourselves, into the eyes of one another.

People: We need only listen to music, the Word read and the Word proclaimed.

Leader: We need only see the font, the table prepared and the cross.

People: We come to worship the God who inhabits our world and who indwells our lives.

Leader: God is here!

MUSICAL GUEST:We are pleased to welcome acclaimed New York jazz pianist/composer Deanna Witkowski in worship with us this morning. Winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a former guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, Deanna has been heralded for her “consistently thrilling” playing and her “boundless imagination” (All Music Guide). Her 2014 solo piano recording, Raindrop: Improvisations with Chopin, seamlessly combines jazz, Chopin, and the music of Brazil. Her 2009 release, From This Place, features her liturgical jazz and led to a second appearance on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday. Deanna’s recordings and sheet music will be available for purchase in the Commons Area following both services as well as at deannajazz.com.

ALTAR FLOWERS:The flowers on the altar are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Matthew William Lee and his grandmother, Mrs. Lucille P. Lee, by Dr. and Mrs. William Lee; David, Holly, Matthew and Ethan Lee; and Rob, Jen and Caleb Lee.

Invitation

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have strayed from your ways. Like the Prodigal Son, we have wasted our inheritance. You gave us the earth for our home, but we squander earth's resources and hoard its bounty. You gave us neighbors to love, but we pursue selfish ambitions. You gave us the commandments that lead to human flourishing, but we break your law and forsake your love. Forgive us our sin and bring us to repentance. Draw our wandering hearts back to you that we may find freedom in obedience to your love. Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

+Scripture Luke 15:1-3, 11-24

Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ So he told them this parable: Then Jesus said, ‘There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, “Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.” So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, “How many of my father’s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.’ ” So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” But the father said to his slaves, “Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!” And they began to celebrate.

You brought all things into being and called them good. From the dust of the earth you formed us into your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. When rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights, you bore up the ark on the waters, saved Noah and his family, and made covenant with every living creature on earth. When you

led your people to Mount Sinai for forty days and forty nights, you gave us your commandments and made us your covenant people. When your people forsook your covenant, your prophet Elijah fasted for forty days and forty nights; and on your holy mountain, he heard your still small voice. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:People:

Leader: Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. When you gave him to save us from our sin, your Spirit led him into the wilderness, where he fasted forty days and forty nights to prepare for his ministry. When he suffered and died on a cross for our sin, you raised him to life, presented him alive to the apostles during forty days, and exalted him at your right hand. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. Now, when we your people prepare for the yearly feast of Easter, you lead us to repentance for sin and the cleansing of our hearts, that during these forty days of Lent we may be gifted and graced to reaffirm the covenant you made with us through Christ. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.People:

Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and for ever. People:

+The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTORS:

Our home has a front door with lots of windows so that you I can see when friends arrive and when family members happen-by at dinner time. I like to meet guests at the door and walk them to the car when they leave. In those moments I know that I am the host and they are my guests.

When we come to worship we may seem a bit uncertain as to our role; do I come as guest or host? Clearly at the Lord’s Table, Jesus is the host and we are the invited guests. But practically, as a worshipper, am I a host or guest? Most of us avoid the decision by saying that we are family which is a nice way of saying “every-man-for him/herself.”

Not so long ago we made signifi cant improvements to the Curtis Building lobby, a heavily traffi cked entrance

on Sunday mornings. We built a grand gathering space for Church on Morgan. Soon we will have the completion of the Garden Gallery which will serve as the “front door” for our original campus and especially for worship in the sanctuary. While all of these improvements were done as acts of hospitality, they are just space. We will not be a more hospitable church simply because of beautiful space. When was the last time you acted as a host, not as a guest?

Even on the night of Jesus’ betrayal, and even among the twelve whom he knew the best, he was the host. Let us walk in the ways of Jesus as we off er hospitality to all who enter our doors.

Grace and Peace,Rev. Ned Hill

Good information is key to any mission. And as United Methodists our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Discipleship begins with understanding the Gospel and it continues over the course of a lifetime as one learns the way of Jesus. At Edenton Street, our newest learning model is known as eStreet University (eStreet U). eStreet U courses, conversations, and retreats exist to off er a centralized high-quality learning experience where individuals from each of our worshipping sites, as well as individuals from the community, can come together to discover the depths of the Christian faith. Scripture study, Th eology, and Christian Living are all categories encompassing the information we each

want to understand. eStreet U strives to off er these opportunities in short term formats no longer than 6 weeks and seeks out the experts in their fi eld to share and teach. Leaders have already included Rev. Greg Moore, Bishop Will Willimon, author Reggie McNeal, Bishop Peter Storey and Rev. Alan Storey, with exciting and interesting authors, theologians and professors yet to be with us.

Please be on the lookout for the eStreet U logo seen above. It is our goal to build your trust that when you see that logo, you will register for the learning opportunity off ered.

Construction Update

Work on the Garden Gallery is progressing but, with weather issues and other construction delays, hopes for opening the new space by Easter are not going to be realized. In the Christian liturgical year, however, Easter Sunday is just the beginning of the 50 day season of Eastertide. So, while we won’t be in the space for Easter, we do anticipate opening during Eastertide!

Based on the current schedule, the Garden Gallery should open in late April. Once we are in the space and have access to the interior ramp, the temporary exterior ramps can be removed and work on the exterior walkways can be completed. Barring any unanticipated problems, plans are to celebrate the completed space on Sunday, May 22.

As you look at the construction site you will see that windows and doors are in place and during the next few weeks you will see exterior brick going up, the temporary wall in the Commons coming down, crepe myrtles being planted and other work being done in the courtyard. As we celebrate the new, we also acknowledge our incredible history on the corner of Dawson and Edenton Streets. Recognizing contributions of those who are a part

of our history, new walkways and plantings in the courtyard have been planned to model, as closely as possible, the original design prepared by the late John Harris. A new wooden cross is being crafted using the inspiration of our current steeple cross designed by the late Charles Davis. John Harris and Charles Davis are just two of the great cloud of witnesses at Edenton Street who are the foundation of this great church. There are countless others who have provided leadership and support.

As we anticipate completion and begin to live into the new space, continue to pray for how the space will be used to build the kingdom of God. Please join me in praying that the new doors will open wide to welcome members and visitors to enter into a deeper relationship with Christ and with each other. Pray that the doors will open wide as we leave this space and go into the world to share the love of Christ. Pray that the doors will open wide for ALL and that those who enter these doors and those who leave these doors will continue to find meaningful ways to share Christ from the heart of Raleigh.
