W e started the year off in true style, 26 members attended the cream tea

at the Swan Hotel on the embankment. It was another wet and windy

day but we had a wonderful afternoon and ended up

feeling full to the brim and a little warmer inside as

the tea included a glass of prosecco.

7th April saw us returning to Hazel Kaye Beauty Salon for

another pamper evening, 24 members enjoyed an evening

of pampering as well as the chance to catch up for a long

chat over a cup of tea and some nibbles. Once again the

therapists made us feel welcome and very special, our

thanks to them for making it a night to remember. Photo

shows Carol’s delight with her manicure.

April was a busy month, we arranged a visit to Peacocks Auction Rooms inviting

husbands and friends. Peacocks was founded in 1901 and has been holding weekly

auctions in and around Bedford for over a Century. It was a fun and interesting

evening and at the end of the evening we took part in a small quiz, trying to value

certain items. Most of us were miles out, but Lynn Summerfield was the overall

winner, well done Lynne. The evening was rounded off with a light supper and a

glass of wine.

Thanks to everyone who came along and supported the Bosom Pals Quiz on 28 May at the White Horse pub in Newnham Avenue. It was a great evening with lots of laughter and singing. Food was excellent value for money and Nigel was a first class quiz master, Sue and her staff made us feel really welcome, and we made

£322.13p clear profit for Bosom Pals. Our regular quizzers comments were “the best BP quiz ever”. Catherine Long’s team “The scrambled Eggheads” came first, photo of Catherine at the Pamper Evening.

It really amazes me what some of our members have done during their life and what some of them do

now as a hobby and in their spare time. In March Jenny Carroll told us about her earlier life as a dancer

with the Opera Ballet at Sadlers Wells Theatre and the many well known celebrities that she has worked

with. In June Viv Addy and her husband came to tell us all about the “Civil War Re-enactment” group

they are involved in. It was really interesting and showed us another side of Viv.

At the end of June we held our Summer Dinner

at Pavenham Park Golf Club. It was a beautiful

summer evening and we were able to sit out on the

balcony overlooking the Ouse Valley until well after

dark. We started the evening with a wonderful

fruity Pimms followed by an excellent 3-course

meal. As usual the food and service was excellent.

In March another 5 ladies attended a Look Good Feel

Better (LGFB) Session at Luton &

Dunstable Hospital. This is what they

had to say about it:

“We were given a demonstration of how to apply

skincare and makeup products, which were selected

for our individual skin tones. All the products used

were given to us to bring home. Look Good Feel

Better is a charity of women who have been through,

or are going through cancer. The beauticians who did

the demonstration, gave up their time voluntarily, and

made a very pleasant afternoon for us. Cake and

coffee was supplied. A very special thank you to Ro

Haggerwood and the other driver who drove the

minibus, and special thanks to the Committee for

arranging the afternoon”. If you have not yet already

attended one of these sessions and would like to do so,

you can go direct to Look Good Feel Better to book your

place, follow this link www.lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk, or

phone 01372 747 500 . If you would like to go with a

group of ladies from Bosom Pals for which transport will

be provided, please contact Di Gonse or one of the

Committee.

just a few minutes walk away and this year we are

hoping to go there first to ensure it is open. Bosom

PROFILE—LYNNE SUMMERFIELD

I am in my late fifties, I live in Wilstead with my husband Mick of

37 years. We have 3 grown up daughters, 3 son-in-laws and 1

granddaughter age 11 months. Due to a large family and one dog

we have a very busy family life.

My Mother Brenda Gilbert founded “Bosom Pals” with her friend

Marie Crowe, 20 years ago. So it seems ironic I have re-joined the

group 20 years later. My Sister, Marion and I helped Mum and

Marie in the early days, making coffee, fundraising and organising

raffles.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2013 at the same time as being made redundant from my job

with a children’s charity for 17 years, so everything about life changed over a matter of a week. In my job I

worked in a women’s refuge, Bedford Prison, children’s centres, child contact, family support and young carers.

I have now finished treatment and I have started to make children’s clothes which I love. I also like reading ,

swimming , walking my dog “Martha” and being a Nana”.

Photos below show the original members of Bosom Pals in 1994. Do you recognise any of the faces? Picture on

the left shows a young Gloria, Maureen, Adriana, June, Marie, Lynne and Marion.

Lynne has given us one of her Mums recipes—

T o the Transfiguration Church Hall in Bedford Road,

Kempston. It is located between Margetts Road and

Cleveland Street, almost opposite Barclays Bank near Addison

Park. The post code is MK42 8BQ. Follow this link to their

website http://www.transfigurationchurch.co.uk/default.html. The entrance is in

Bedford Road itself, the church the grounds are beautiful and there is ample car

parking available.

T iming—We cannot gain access before 7.30 pm, so we can’t start to set up

before that time. Please arrive as soon after 7.30 pm as possible because we

would still like to have had our tea and biscuits before our speaker starts at 8

pm and we have to be out by 10 pm. We have agreed that our first meeting at our

new venue will be on 13 August, the next meeting.

The Committee have been working hard to find a replacement venue, taking into

account all the main criteria that we were looking for and your comments from the

survey that we circulated. Thanks to all of you who completed the survey and thanks

to Mary for suggesting the Transfiguration Hall. We have viewed numerous halls and

this is by far the best we have seen.

The hall is much bigger than the Primrose Unit and doesn’t have any pillars obscuring

the view of the speaker. It is large enough for us to set up individual tables when we

need them for craft demonstrations when all members are invited to take part.

We are now quite excited about the move and a little sad to leave the Primrose Unit

and we are grateful that Bedford Hospital has allowed us to use it free of charge, and

of course even more grateful to our breast care nurses for taking on the responsibility

of it all on our behalf.

To help cover the hall hire costs we have decided to put the monthly subscription up to

£2. This will be the first increase in monthly subscription since the group was formed

We are delighted that our breast care nurses have all agreed that they will continue to

support us in the future and that at least one of them will attend every meeting.

Please join us for our August meeting in our new venue. Come along

and see it for yourself.

Tea, coffee and home make cakes will be provided.

We were sorry to hear the sad news that Betty Moon passed away at the end

of April. Betty was a regular member of Bedford Bosom Pals for a number of

years but then she moved closer to Milton Keynes and joined Bosom Pals,

Milton Keynes in June 2003. Betty became their Social Secretary, their official

Quiz Master and demonstrated her expert flower arranging skills. Bosom Pals

Milton Keynes tell us that “Betty loved to help with their annual car raffle and

would chat with the public who were buying tickets. She also enjoyed helping

out on the kiosk and would knit beautiful clothes for the dolls that were being

sold, a lady of many talents. Nothing was too much trouble for Betty.” Betty’s

family asked for donations to go to Bosom Pals Milton Keynes and £673.85

was raised. Betty’s daughter, Carol then decided that because Betty still had

connections with us in Bedford, and that when she was first diagnosed she

came along to our group for help and support, she wanted to make a personal

donation to us and we received a cheque of £130 and a lovely letter thanking

us for what we gave to Betty in those early days of her cancer diagnosis. Betty

will be remembered by us for her friendly positive attitude and companionship over the years, she certainly gave a great

deal back to our Group and helped and supported other newly diagnosed ladies. The cheque was a lovely surprise for us

and we will ensure the money is put to good use. Thanks Carol.

We have just heard that another of our members, Iris Parkhouse, passed away on Wednesday 23 June in St

Johns Hospice, Moggerhanger. Iris joined Bosom Pals in January 2013 and attended a few

meetings last year, more recently she was too poorly to come along to our meetings but we did

keep in touch with her. Her funeral is on Thursday 7 August at Norse Road, 12.15pm.

Moving on to pastures new

We are sorry to be losing one of our

breast care nurses, Alison Borromeo.

Alison is leaving the breast care unit

and taking up a new post in the

Palliative Care Team at Bedford

Hospital.

Thank you Alison for all your help and

support over the last few years and

we wish you every success in your

new post and career.

MEMBERS NEWS

It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to Alan Wiggins who passed away on 2nd June. ,

Alan was the husband of Elizabeth, one of our breast care nurses who retired about 4 years, he

was a great supporter of Bosom Pals, attended almost all of our social events, and was often

heard to say that “Bosom Pals know how to party”. He will be sadly missed and remembered

fondly. Elizabeth kindly agreed to share her thoughts and memories of Alan with us.

We met in 1969 when I was doing my nurse training at Charing Cross Hospital (local groups short of girls for parties would often phone the nurses home advising anyone of forthcoming ones). I still have the dog-eared photograph of me in my nurses uniform which he carried around all the time in his wallet. We married in December 1971 as soon as I had qualified – I even got the final result of my midwifery training course on our wedding day, which was cutting it a bit fine –my father had said he wanted me to finish my training before we got married. We had some amazing times together, travelling for our holidays and sharing our joint hobby of researching our family history. A few years ago both Alan and I wrote a booklet of our memories, to give to our children, so they knew we had a life before they were born – I am so pleased that we did that now. He will live on in our children and our nine grandchildren – if anyone ever mentioned grandchildren, he always made sure they knew he had nine of them! He was a very proud Grandad.

His other love of his life was the Air Training Corps – he had been a member since he was 13 years old and at the time of his death he was a Squadron Leader in

charge of media, covering an area from the Humber to London and from Birmingham to the Norfolk coast. He was working right to the end, in his real job of railway signalling – but towards the last days he worked from home and emailed the reports into the office. Our son Christopher always said that Dad would never retire – he was right! His other hobbies included gardening, walking, photography, camping and travel – the latter being essential as our eldest daughter, Victoria, lives in Australia . Our second daughter, Caroline, is a breast feeding adviser in Hull – the city I grew up in! (People do look at me quizzically if they catch sight of me knitting breasts for her training sessions with new mums!)

He was particularly proud that we were both Gamesmakers at the 2012 London Olympics. A chance in a lifetime.

He was too young to die – but he packed so much into his 66 years and we all have such lovely memories of our time together. He remained positive about his illness to the very end, believing he could survive, but it was not to be. He totally supported Bedford Hospital and his oncology team –and would never hear a word against the NHS.

RIP Alan

The total amount raised in Alan’s name for Cancer Research UK is £2375.09. This includes money from the funeral collection, and memory giving and also all the sponsored events done by Alan and Elizabeth’s children and their friends. They did all sorts of things including half marathons and “tough mudder”, if you want to know more, or feel like trying it yourself,

visit this website: https://toughmudder.co.uk/.

I am sure we all hope and pray that research will find cures for this terrible group of illnesses and others will benefit from losing Alan.

Some Interesting Facts from Cancernet.UK

A recent overview of five international studies has added

credibility to those who believe vitamin D deficiency is an

important contributing factor for breast cancer. They

found that women with higher serum 25-hydroxy vitamin

D [25(OH)d] at diagnoses were associated with longer

survival. Specifically, patients in the highest quintile of 25

(OH)D had approximately half the death rate from breast

cancer as those in the lowest. Authors concluded that all

patients with breast cancer should be restored to the

normal range (30-80 ng/ml), with appropriate monitoring.

More evidence that Yoga after breast cancer

eases pain and fatigue

A randomised study,

published in the Journal of

Clinical Oncology, involving

191 women with breast

cancer found that, after

radiation treatment, yoga and

stretching groups

experienced decreases in

pain and fatigue.

Additionally, months after the

radiation treatment, the yoga group self-reported

higher general health, and were also more likely than

the other two groups to say that they found some kind

of meaning of life from their cancer experience.

Women in the yoga group had the greatest reduction

in cortisol levels across the day ,which reflected the

ability of yoga to help regulate stress hormones.

DietCompLyf Study

A number of our members took part in the above study whose aims were:

To find out if diet and lifestyle could affect survival after breast cancer

One focus of the study is to look at the intake of phytoestrogens– which are compounds

that are naturally present in plants and are present in a wide range of foods.

Results—Analysis has shown that the amount of phytoestrogens that patients eat before

they were diagnosed with breast cancer was related to certain risk factors for breast cancer,

such as body weight. The levels of phytoestrogens eaten before diagnoses did not affect the

know factors associated with the outcome after breast cancer diagnosis. As some women

changed their diet after being diagnosed the study will now focus on the phytoestrogen levels

that are eaten after diagnosis.

Thanks to those members who took part in this study, one of the largest of its kind in the UK

RELAY FOR LIFE

We were invited to take part in the above

event held on Saturday 28 June in

Buckingham. The weather had been good

all week, but true to form, as we arrived at

the venue, it started to rain and continued

for the rest of the afternoon. We were

issued with a survivor tee shirt and took part

in the Survivors’ Lap of Honour where we

were cheered and clapped and bubbles

were blown at us, all around the track. It

was very emotional and reminded us of the

period when we were diagnosed and

brought back memories of those early days

of diagnosis and how thankful we were to be

taking part, others had not been so lucky!

We were then able to enjoy the rest of the

day, having lunch of a delightful English tea

with finger sandwiches and finished off with

cream scones, jam and strawberries.

Throughout the year, teams of 8 to 15

people get together and fundraise in their

local communities to support the work of

Cancer Research UK. Then everyone

comes together in an inspiring overnight

celebration. There was a mix of music,

games, entertainment, food and fundraising.
