This magnificent and sensitively restored late Victorian residence,

which includes some unique original features, is set in extensive

mature grounds at the quieter north end of Farquhar Road,

widely regarded as Birmingham’s most prestigious location. The

accommodation offers superb reception rooms and eight to nine

bedrooms, including a two bedroom coach house annexe.

“Of particular note are the unique original features of the restored

grand entrance hall,” says the owner. “These include a galleried Burma

teak staircase and a stained glass window of enormous size depicting

Lady Godiva and her husband, which dates from the late 1700s.

The hall also has an oak parquet floor with Burma teak marquetry,

while the primary entrance door also features stained glass panels,

some pictorial.”overviewClaremont_PAGES_V3.indd 3 04/06/2015 11:36

“Constructed in the 1890s with substantial servants’ quarters, Claremont was originally built for the Elliott family, affluent hoteliers who were linked to the Cadburys,” explains the owner.

“It remained in the family until the late 1960s, when it was split into five apartments, while other parts were left unoccupied. Farquhar Road later became part of the Edgbaston Conservation Area and,

when the house came onto the market five years ago, I took up the challenge of restoring it to its former splendour but with all the benefits of modern life.”

“In terms of modernisation, the house has new plumbing, a higher than required

standard of insulation, two boilers plus a back-up

boiler, and a mix of designer vertical radiators

and under-floor heating,” continues the owner.

“The lighting incorporates LED technology, and

most rooms have central audio and fitted HD

televisions. These aspects can be controlled from

within each room, or remotely via an iPad, as can

the security lighting, CCTV cameras, gate access

and building temperature.”

sides. Other features include ornate plasterwork and cornices, and original art deco

“Externally, the wide frontage provides extensive parking,” adds the owner. “At the rear the first tier of the terraced garden is paved with

York stone from which eight steps lead down to the restored Victorian formal

garden. The lowest tier is lawn; meandering paths take you down to a pond

at the far end, where there is access to shared private parkland.”

“I’ve been privileged to be able to enjoy Claremont for even a short time,” concludes the owner. “It’s so quiet and secluded, you feel as if you’re living in the country, while in fact you’re within walking distance of Harborne high street, excellent schools, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the university. Claremont is in a premier location, where neighbouring properties have become home to various notable residents.”
