Having had the opportunity to appreciate the work of two local artists this week, I’ve been thinking about what the real difference is between a creative person and an artist. It’s not  just talent but it’s not solely monetary recognition either. Creative people apply imagination and ingenuity to solve problems. This is an expression of part of their personality that makes them adept and motivates them to become more skilful. Artists are compelled to be creative and see the entire world through this filter. They’re passionate about the expression of their creativity and will devote considerable time to meticulously refining their craft. Notably, they spend much more time at this than can be economically justified but they can’t leave it alone. Creativity is a compulsion for artists. Artists frequently have to support themselves through other more mundane forms of work. In their hearts I suspect they still see this as just filling the gap between meeting responsi- bilities and that time when they can be left alone to go back to doing what they are fasci- nated by. So when is this a hobby and when does it become art? The line is blurry and de- pends on how the individual sees himself. Art is distinguished by excelling in a any particu- lar expression and honing your craft can apply to many fields of endeavour. We generally think of art as expression without a profit motive but, in fact, every person who relentlessly refines her abilities and greatly surpasses the average in any form of work is raising it to an artistic level. You’ll know a real artistic work when you see it because you can’t deny true excellence. In a sense all of life is art if you are willing to devote the hard work and solitary concentration necessary to create something well above the ordinary. Call yourself an artist or a farmer or a businessperson but respect your art and go to it with a pas- sion. JK

When are You an Artist?

Lo-Carb Ecological Disaster

Quebec is the centre of the once greatCanadian maple syrup industry. Today thefad for low carbohydrate diets has causeda sever slump in demand for syrup and anunexpected crisis among sap harvesters.

The QAFS (Que. Alliance des Fermiersde Sirop) reports to the CBC that vastamounts of syrup produced this spring

will likely be dumped. Even more seri-ously, unharvested sap remaining in treeswill pose a serious threat to local treeworkers. With unusually warm weatherconditions the sap can begin to runquickly building up pressure in the treesand causing them to unexpectedly ex-plode. The result of this form of thermalexpansion has already claimed 4 lives inthe Trois Rivier area. Saskatchewantowns are responding by sending special-ist assistance.

Crazy Heart— Jeff Bridges Best Actor

 Hurt Locker – Best Picture

Avatar – Best Art Direction, Cinematogra-

AGES Artist: Duane Bristow

Duane Bristow is a wood carver whosework comprises geometric, domestic andnatural subjects. This intricacy of hiscarving speaks of the amount of time andattention he has lavished on his subjects.Every material appeals to him, includinggolf balls (of which he recommendsTitleist as the best brand for use with aknife).

Of all his subjects, birds have the premierposition. Duane has a feeling for themthat gives his carvings a sense of grace, life and compact energy. They seem tohover on their stands in readiness forimminent flight.

If you are interested in carving or wouldlike see more of Duane’s work, contacthim at [email protected] JK

Stand Alone is a Stand Out

Friday night, March 26th was a lively andenjoyable evening at the Cypress Hotel.Stand Alone did just that as he entertainedthe crowd with a wide range of music from

jazz to rock and country. Amazingly he didit all himself with his synthesizing systemand impressive double necked guitar.

Stand Alone is the stage name of Patrick Watkins who occupies his days as GeneralManager of the Eastend Credit Union. If finance is sited in the left side of the brainand art in the right side, then Patrick is oneof those unusual people who has his wholebrain working all the time. When it comesto music he really puts it together and de-livers a great performance. Further, he isequally comfortable in genres of severaleras. Rock, country and swing will keepthe party going all night but for a real treatask him for the Andrea Bocelli song, Con

Te Partiro and it will melt your heart.

Patrick is talented and easy with the audi-ence. When you have the chance be sure tocatch one of his performances. JK
