Award winning novelist, Joan Thomas’ acclaimed new novel, The Opening Sky, a contemporary story set in Winnipeg, was recently shortlisted for the Governor General Award as was Joan’s 2008 novel Reading by Lightning – winner of a Commonwealth Prize and the Amazon.ca Award. Her 2010 novel Curiosity was nominated for the Scotia Bank Giller Prize and the IMPAC-Dublin Literary Award. In this workshop we will explore the essentials of the mystery novel, especially the importance of the opening chapter and the craft of plotting. Catherine will provide  tips  on  where  to  begin  when  planning  to  write  a  mystery  novel,  and  lead  participants  through  writing  exercises designed to spark ideas. Bring your questions, your notebooks and pens, and prepare to imagine.

Where to Begin?

Catherine Hunter is the author of three mystery novels: Where Shadows Burn, The Dead of Midnight, and Queen of Diamonds. She teaches creative writing at the University of Winnipeg and believes that writing alone is hard, so workshops should be fun.
