A Message from our Assistant Principal...December 2019
Dear Parents and Students,
Our hope is that the Thanksgiving Holiday was relaxing and enjoyable for all. With the
approach of the Winter Break comes the approach of midterm testing. In preparation, please
continue to keep the lines of communication open with teachers; be sure to include students
in conversations. Teachers may be contacted through Focus, email, or phone.
Beginning this year all Choice School Lotteries will be held in the Office of Equity,
Innovation, and Choice. The lottery will begin at 9:00am on December 16, 2019. Be sure to
log in on the Family Dashboard to check student status.
Semester Exams: Midterm exams will take place December 17-20, 2019. Please call the
school or contact your child’s teacher to plan for make-ups. Exams will not be given in
advance, but arrangements can be made for after the Holidays. The shortened day schedule
will be in effect for December 18-20, 2019.
The 2019 NASA Brevard Top Scholars recognition event was held at the Kennedy Space
Center on November 15, 2019. Three top scholars from Edgewood attended this event.
Seniors Dylan Johnson, Jessica Ruiz, and Caspian Chaharom represented Edgewood. The
students enjoyed the day and were able to have the opportunity to learn about NASA’s
missions and the role KSC plays in those missions. Students enjoyed lunch with an astronaut
and were able to engage in career discussions with NASA engineers and scientists. Students
reported that the day was a great opportunity and well worth the time.
Upcoming in January: Students and teachers report back to Edgewood on January 8, 2020.
First semester does not end until January 10, 2020 and report cards will be issued on January
17, 2020. We will also have our New Student Orientations on January 14th and 16th at 6:00
pm in the cafeteria. More information will be posted on our website as we draw closer.
Please note that 2nd semester does not begin until January 13, 2020.
Thank you for your continued support in our mission to serve our students with excellence as
the standard. We wish all warmest wishes for a wonderful Winter Holiday.
Warm regards,
Dr. Diakakis

Edgewood Junior Classical League
The Edgewood JCL (Junior Classical League) chapter won Club of the Month recognition
from our National organization – NJCL – for October. This is because the students participated
in several spooky and classics related activities which brought the group together and helped
raise awareness of classics around the school. The two events for which they received specific
recognition achieved both goals. Our JCL chapter was recognized on the NJCL social media
accounts so our club received broad recognition.
Three students played a vital role in helping our chapter gain this status: Jacob Bumgardner,
club president and overall event organizer; Keegan McNear, club publicist and event planner;
and Mark Johnston, club historian.
We are very proud of all that our JCL chapter has been able to accomplish so far this year –
they are doing a wonderful job!
Edgewood Band News
The Edgewood Band participated in the Merritt Island Holiday parade on Saturday, December
7th. The weather was perfect for a parade, the students marched and played beautifully, and
were met with smiles and cheers along the way! A huge "thank you" goes out to our amazing
band parent volunteers that showed up early and walked along with the band keeping our
students safe and hydrated.
The band concluded its holiday performances with their winter concert on Friday, December 13th
in the Merritt Island High School auditorium. The concert included both jazz bands, beginning
band, symphonic band, concert band, and wind ensemble, as well as a special appearance of
Edgewood’s own symphony orchestra – a combined group of advanced orchestra and band
students. The students in all the ensembles played wonderfully! Bravo, Edgewood Band
students!

HOSA News
We had our first blood drive in September and our next one is scheduled for Dec. 4th
from 8:30 - 2:30. If a family member wishes to donate, please check in at the front office
before coming out to the bus. We also have two drives planned during 2nd semester.
13 HOSA students recently participated in the Senior Citizen Day at the Space Coast
Fair. This annual event is sponsored by Space Coast Daily and Space Coast Area
Transit. Residents from area assisted living centers were paired with a HOSA student
and spent the day enjoying several exciting shows, a delicious lunch with music and a
magic demonstration.
HOSA will have 22 students participate in the HOSA Space Coast Regional Competition
on January 11th at Deltona High School. Students who place in the top 3 in their
category will qualify for the HOSA State Leadership Conference to be held in April.
Thank you to Golf N Gator in Cocoa
Beach for donating $2300 worth of
gift certificates to be used as student
incentives, as well as A+ Thrift for
their continued support.
