RH Matt Pearce (4-3, 5.51) vs. RH Aaron Brooks (8-9, 6.02) MEMPHIS R EDBIRDS (89-50) AT C OLORADO S PRINGS S KY S OX (80-55) Sunday, September 3 • 2:30 p.m. (CT) • Security Service Field (8,500) • Colorado Springs, Colo. Game #140 • Road Game #70 (42-27) THE GAME TODAY’S GAME: The division-champion Memphis Redbirds have lost back-to-back games in Colorado Springs after winning their five previous contests overall, and today’s game three against the Sky Sox (Brewers) is the second- to-last game in the regular season before the two clubs meet in the first round of the playoffs next week. With one more win, Memphis will become the first PCL team to win 90 in the regular season since Tucson won 91 in 2006. Also with a win, the Redbirds will tie the 1946 and 1955 Memphis Chickasaws for the 10th-most wins in 119 seasons of professional baseball in Memphis dating back to 1877. Memphis’ 89-50 record is the best in Triple-A Baseball (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 86-52) with the 89 wins two shy of Double-A Trenton (91-46) for the most in all of Minor League Baseball. Today’s game will be broadcast live on Sports56/87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Matt Pearce makes his 10th start for the Redbirds coming off a win Tuesday against Iowa, allowing two runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings. Combining his time with Double-A Springfield, Pearce’s 13 wins are second in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, and his 3.85 ERA is eighth. So far this season, Pearce has a 7.65 ERA in four road starts (17er/20.0ip) compared to a 4.03 ERA in five starts at home (13er/29.0ip). Aaron Brooks is set for his second start with Colorado Springs after being designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs. Brooks did not face the Redbirds with the I-Cubs in 24 starts and 138.0 innings earlier this season, but he took a loss at Memphis in 2016 after giving up seven runs, six earned, and seven hits in 3.0 innings. He also faced Memphis in relief with Omaha in 2015 (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K) and started three times for the Storm Chasers against the Redbirds in 2014 (1-1, 3.79 ERA). SCHEDULE WITH COLORADO SPRINGS: The Redbirds and Sky Sox finish their season series after playing 12 times between April 11 and June 16 but none since. With this Sept. 1-4 series, the Sky Sox become the first Redbird opponent above .500 since Reno July 29-Aug. 1. Since Memphis and Colorado Springs resumed playing 16 times each season in 2014, the Redbirds have not lost the season series to the Sky Sox. THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY: In 2004, Scott Seabol went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored against Nashville, surpassing the club single-season record for hits (153) and tying the record for runs scored (90) in the process. Seabol set the runs record the next day and finished with a total of 92, as well as a total of 156 hits on the season. In 2005, Bill Pulsipher struck out 15 batters over 8.0 innings in the Redbirds’ 6-4 victory over Albuquerque, tying the record for most strikeouts by a Redbirds pitcher in a regular season game, which was set by Anthony Reyes three weeks earlier. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Redbirds led 7-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Sky Sox scored two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and five in the sixth to spur a 14-11 win. Tyler O’Neill and Jordan Schafer combined to go 6-for-9 with three runs and seven RBI, with O’Neill slugging his 30th home run of the season and Schafer adding a double. Wilfredo Tovar doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Redbirds. Kevin Herget ended up giving up six runs in 4.0 innings in REDBIRDS VS. a start, and Arturo Reyes surrendered the five sixth-inning Sky Sox runs and took the loss.

FOR THE RECORD: - Memphis is 39 games over .500, two shy of a season high-water mark (89-48, Aug. 31)- Memphis has its largest division lead in franchise history (previous before this season: 15.0 games, Aug. 13, 2000)- Memphis is one of four teams in MiLB with 88+ wins (Trenton Thunder [AA], 91-46; West Michigan Whitecaps [A], 90-44; Chattanooga Lookouts [AA], 89-49)- The Redbirds currently lead the PCL American Southern Division by 22.0 games, and since divisions were established in the PCL in 1963, only two other teams have won their division by 20 or more games (1970 Spokane Indians, 26.0 games; 1981 Albuquerque Dukes, 25.0 games)- Memphis currently has its best ERA in franchise history (3.75) (3.89, 1998 and 2003), its best fielding percentage (.984) (.984, 2014) and its third-best batting average (.277) (.284, 1999; .279, 2004)

84 AND COUNTING: The 2017 Redbirds became the winningest club in the franchise’s 20 seasons with their 84th win on Aug. 21 against New Orleans. The previous record was 83 wins, set by the 2000 team. At the time the record was set, 17 different Redbirds had also played for St. Louis this season, including six making their Major League debuts.

CHAMPIONS!: With a 12-7 win at Nashville Aug. 13, the Redbirds clinched the PCL American Southern Division title, with 21 games to play in the regular season. The playoff trip is Memphis’ fifth in franchise history, alongside 2000, 2009, 2010, and 2014. The Redbirds went on to win the PCL Championship in both 2000 and 2009.

IT’S NOT JUST ERA: Memphis’ pitching staff leads the PCL in ERA (3.75), which would be a franchise record (3.89, 1998 and 2003), and Memphis is the only club in the PCL with a team ERA under 4.15. The Redbirds had a league-leading 3.16 ERA in June and a 3.08 ERA in July, which also led the league.

The Redbirds are allowing 4.0 runs per game and have issued the fewest walks (363, 2.7 BB/9) and given up the second-fewest hits (1195, 8.6 per game) in the league. Additionally, Memphis pitchers sit second in the league in strikeouts (1115, 8.1 K/9).

MEMPHIS MASHERS: Memphis increased its season home run total to 160 with one Saturday, which is the third-most in the PCL this season. Memphis hit 107 all of last season and 97 in 2015. The Redbirds have hit 83 homers at AutoZone Park this season after blasting 51 in The Bluff City all of last year and 49 in 2015. The club record for home runs in a season is 174 (2004).

STARTING OUT QUICK, FINISHING STRONG: The Redbirds have scored 117 runs in the first inning and 78 runs in the second inning of games, outscoring the opposition 195-92 in the game’s first two frames. Additionally, the club has outscored opponents 61-33 in the ninth inning and 14-1 in extras this season. Memphis has scored first in 91 of its 139 games, which is the most in the PCL.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: The Redbirds are 84-for-132 (.636) in steal tries this year but have rounded into form recently. After starting the year 18-for-42 (.429), Memphis is 66 for its last 90 attempts (.733).

IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for-24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 25 for their last 57 (.439). Overall, pinch-hitters are 30-for-81 (.370) on the season. Thirteen different players have recorded a pinch hit, led by Rangel Ravelo’s six knocks.

GOING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds have excelled in extra-inning games this season, posting a perfect 10-0 record in such contests while being the only team in the PCL undefeated in extra frames. The 10 wins are the most in the circuit. The ‘Birds have outscored the opposition 14-1 in extras this year.

AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals full-season minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories:

- AVG: Valera (1st, .317)- HR: Wisdom (1st, 30)- RBI: Wisdom (1st, 86), Martini (3rd, 66), Garcia (5th, 65)- Stolen Bases: Tovar (t-2, 19)- Wins: Pearce (2nd, 13), Helsley (4th, 11)- ERA: Helsley (3rd, 2.72), Gallen (4th, 2.90), Hudson (5th, 3.01), Pearce (8th, 3.85)- Saves: Lucas (1st, 16)- Strikeouts: Helsley (3rd, 137), Gallen (5th, 118)

RED-HOT JULY: The Redbirds set a franchise record for wins in a single month by going 22-6 in July, bettering a 21-9 Aug. 1998 and topping the previous best July, which was a 20-9 mark in 2014. The Redbirds hit .283 as a team in the month and led the PCL with a 3.08 July ERA, and Memphis accomplished the feat with eight key players having seen action with St. Louis.

STREAKS GALORE: Part of Memphis’ success this season has been due to long winning streaks. The Redbirds won a franchise-record 11-straight games April 28-May 8, bettering nine-straight wins during the 2000 and 2014 seasons, and then had streaks of seven-straight and nine-straight in July. The ‘Birds also won 12-straight home games from July 3-27 and seven-straight road games from May 2-8.

The Redbirds also won or split 27-straight series from April 18-21 at Colorado Springs through Aug. 15-18 versus Nashville (17-0-10).

MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHESCLAPP-ING FOR STUBBY: First-year skipper Stubby Clapp was named the PCL Manager of the Year, becoming the first Redbirds skipper to earn the honor in the franchise’s 20th season in the league.

THE BIG 2-0: Jack Flaherty and Alberto Rosario became the 19th and 20th different Redbirds to also appear on the big league club’s roster this year. Of the 20 players, 16 (Bader, Brebbia, DeJong, Flaherty, Gant, Grichuk, Kelly, Martinez, Mejia, Pham, Piscotty, Rosario, Sherriff, Tuivailala, Voit, Weaver) still remain with the Cardinals as of today.

Eight of the 20 (Bader, Brebbia, DeJong, Flaherty, Lucas, Mejia, Sherriff, Voit) made their Major League debuts this year.

CAREER-BEST BOMBS: All-Pacific Coast League Team member Patrick Wisdom (30) leads the Redbirds in home runs this season, with his total eclipsing his last two seasons combined, and Harrison Bader hit 20, bettering 2016 for his career best. Carson Kelly hit 10 before being going to St. Louis, which bested his rookie season of 2012 (9) for his career high.

VERY GOOD, VALERA: Breyvic Valera has hit in 39 of his last 46 starts (.367, 69-188) and 46 of his last 57 (.367, 83-226). After an 8-for-48 skid (.167) over 16 games dropped his average from .292 to .259, he is back at .317 after his last 63 games overall.

FULL MONTY: Mark Montgomery leads league relievers in lowest opponent batting average (.193) and fewest baserunners/9ip (9.18) and is third in fewest BB/9ip (1.89).

He has allowed runs in only 14 of his 46 outings, and has posted a declining ERA April-July this season (2.92, 2.45, 2.03, 1.35).

LUCAS LOCKS IT DOWN: Josh Lucas is tied for third in the PCL in saves (16) and leads the league in fewest walks/9ip (1.67). He also has eight wins in relief this season. In the last three seasons, Lucas has saved 41-of-50 chances.

A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: All-Star Ryan Sherriff was one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 48 games, tied for the fourth-most in the league, before his promotion to St. Louis. Despite the heavy workload, the southpaw was second among league relievers in lowest opponent batting average (.207) and fewest baserunners/9ip (9.06) before moving up.

Ten of the 19 earned runs Sherriff allowed this year came in three of his outings. Aside from that, Sherriff had a 1.62 ERA (9er/50.0ip).

CHICKS DIG DEJONG BALL: By hitting 13 home runs in 48 games for the Redbirds and 20 in 82 games so far for St. Louis, Paul DeJong joins Rick Ankiel (2007) as the only players to hit 10-plus home runs for both Memphis and St. Louis in the same season (32 MEM, 11 STL).

MIDSEASON HONOREES: Carson Kelly and Ryan Sherriff represented the Redbirds at the Triple-A All-Star Game in Tacoma, with Luke Weaver selected but unable to play due to a promotion to St. Louis. Kelly started at catcher and singled, and Sherriff had a key strikeout in the ninth to help the PCL win.

In addition, Jack Flaherty participated in the MLB Futures Game during All-Star festivities in Miami. Flaherty allowed two runs in the sixth inning but added a strikeout.
