Greetings Edina Public Schools families and welcome to the 2013-14 school year!

This year, like those that came before, promises to be another year filled with numerous academic achievements and student successes.

Edina Public Schools is committed to honoring its tradition of excellence, celebrating the success of its current students and staff, and ensuring its educational programs and services are relevant to the learners of today and tomorrow. We are also dedicated to being good stewards of citizen resources and partnering with local businesses and organizations to continuously improve the Edina community.

So what does all this mean?

It means that you can and should continue to be proud to be part of the Edina Public Schools family. But it also means that you have a critical role in the continued success of our District. We are all in this together; we are all Edina Public Schools.

As we begin a new school year, I invite you to join us. Within this calendar you will find a snapshot of opportunities in which you can be involved, both at our schools and in the greater community. This year, we are also expanding our volunteer services program (part of Edina Community Education Services) to provide even more connections for our students to engage with the tremendous

resources we have in the Edina Public Schools community. I hope you will not only think about ways to help your own child succeed, but also think about ways you can engage with other students and families to continue to promote real-world learning experiences that will help all students thrive and grow. To explore additional ways to engage with Edina Public Schools, call our school or district offices, contact our community volunteer program (952-848-4924, [email protected]), or check us out online at www.edinaschools.org.

Through the power of partnership, we know that we can achieve our mission of All for All. In working with all Edina Public Schools stakeholders – students, families, staff, residents, and business and community leaders – we can ensure we are doing well by all of our learners. Our history of excellence is only as strong as our present and future, which is intricately linked to each and every child.

When all of us work together, we are sure to achieve success for every learner. We all have a role in keeping Edina Public Schools strong and continuing to define excellence for schools across the country and around the world. I look forward to partnering with you on this amazing journey.

Warm regards,

Ric Dressen, Superintendent

MAJOR INITIATIVES

Late Start/Early Release InformationLate Starts and Early Releases are being introduced this year to provide critical collaboration time allowing teachers to better customize the learning experience for each student. Having this additional planning time periodically during the school year allows teachers to provide timely modifications or change instruction in ways that best meet the needs of their students.

WHEN ARE THE LATE START/EARLY RELEASES DAYS?On the following dates, school will either start two hours late or dismiss two hours early:

• Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 - Late Start • Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013 - Early Release• Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 - Late Start• Friday, Mar. 28, 2014 - Early Release

WHAT TIME DOES SCHOOL START/END?

• Late Start means that the student school day begins two hours later than usual, with no class for morning ½ day kindergarten students.

• Early Release means the student day will end two hours earlier than usual, with no class for afternoon ½ day kindergarten students.

WILL THERE BE BUSING ON THESE DAYS?District transportation will be adjusted for the two hour late start or early release. That is, on late start days, the bus will arrive two hours after their usual pickup time; on early release days, students will be dropped off two hours earlier than their usual time. After school activity buses will operate as usual.

EDINA SCHOOLS APP

Edina Public Schools (EPS) is taking communication to the next level with the launch of its Edina Public Schools mobile application, which provides a one-stop source for parents, staff, students and community. The app provides users with instant access on their smartphone or other mobile device to important school information such as staff directories, school announcements, directions and maps, and lunch menus.

Identifying developments in social technology and the unprecedented use of tablet devices and smartphones, EPS understands the importance of having a presence in the mobile sphere as a way to further connect its audiences on an ongoing basis.

CREATING 21ST CENTURY LEARNERSThe development of principles needed for students to "thrive in a rapidly changing, culturally diverse, global society" are especially critical during the secondary years (gr. 6-12). Last year, EPS engaged parents, staff and community members in a study of the secondary academic program. Over 10,000 inputs, as well as reviews of scholarly articles and research on innovative schools from around the world, were analyzed in developing a framework for the Next Generation of our secondary schools, ensuring readiness for all EPS graduates for the world that awaits them.

OCTOBER

2013CREATIVITY THROUGH STEMHow do you design a rollercoaster? What causes electricity? Why does e=mc2?

Edina's STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) curriculum engages students to explore and answer questions such as these. Simulating the atmosphere of college and career environments, STEM emphasizes hands-on learning activities, providing students with the opportunity to be an active participant and experience the energy of science, technology engineering, and math in motion.

JANUARY

2014LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOMLearning does not only take place in the classroom. Students take chances, make great leaps and bounds, and continue to be lifelong learners when they are faced with new environments, challenges and expectations. Real-life application to lessons and activities outside the school walls help students understand key concepts and apply their learning to everyday situations.

Promoting field trips and experiential learning is no longer an option; it’s a necessity.

FEBRUARY

2014READING FOR A REASONEngaging the mind and stimulating the thought process can be achieved through one act: READING. Students are introduced to a global and diverse world through books, articles, magazines and historical documents, while also broadening their minds to creative ways of thinking and learning. At EPS, literacy is a top priority and we are committed to reaching the goal that each Edina student is reading well by third grade.

MARCH

2014MARCH MADNESSThere is never a dull moment at Edina Public Schools. During the month of March, student involvement is in full swing as students compete in local, regional, national and international artistic, academic and athletic events. At Edina High School, students can participate in any one of our 35 athletic teams or they can join a number of clubs and activities that peak their interest -- from band, choir and orchestra to mock trial, ping pong, art and much more. Students across the district can take a peak around the corner to find the next club or activity that suits them the best.

2014ALL FOR ALLOur mission to educate all individuals to be responsible, lifelong learners applies to each and every Edina student. Last year, EPS refocused its efforts on a refinement of its mission statement to three simple words -- All for All. This focused approach acknowledges that it takes all of us – students, families, teachers, staff, community members – working together to ensure that all of our learners have the tools they need to achieve and grow, and that closing achievement, opportunity and access gaps are necessary to ensuring all of our students can be successful.

2014TEACHERS AS STUDENTSTeachers are becoming students again and they are thrilled to say so! The staff at Edina Public Schools make it a point to meet with each other and discuss how, why, and in what ways students learn and what they can do to help all students succeed. Our teachers are experimenting with different lessons, activities and instructional strategies to improve the learning of individual students. Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration are keys to personalizing learning for every Edina student.

Sharpen Written Communication SkillsThe Ed Fund has invested in initiatives including teacher training and two writing centers that elevate the instruction and practice of writing. We have launched writing centers at Edina High School and South View Middle School. While writing centers at the college and university level are common, they are an extremely rare opportunity for our high school and middle school students.

Support Cutting Edge Math and Engineering CurriculumThe Ed Fund is dedicated to funding Project Lead the Way curriculum for grades 7-12. As part of the district’s STEM initiative, these courses enable students to discover, explore and solve real-life problems by integrating science, technology, engineering and math.

Ecademy Website for Elementary LearnersEcademy, a digital learning website funded by the Ed Fund, assists Edina students and their parents. This centralized website houses videos and screencasts created by Edina teachers about Edina curriculum in all content areas. Students and parents can watch the screencasts as many times as necessary to learn the material, pausing and reviewing to accommodate their own learning style, speed and preferences.
