Welcome to our 10th annual Edinburgh Macmillan Art Show. This year it is especially appropriate that it is housed in the prestigious galleries at Bonhams, whose generosity in giving us free use of their premises is greatly appreciated. Once again the exhibition covers a wide range of art and artefacts provided by artists whose contributions both delight the eye and generate vital funds for the on-going work of our charity.

The Show owes its origin to the vision and success of independent volunteers in the west of Scotland who, as the Glasgow ‘84 Committee, have raised millions of pounds over the years for Macmillan Cancer Support through annual art shows. Inspired by their achievements, a small group of longstanding volunteers became involved in the planning and the ultimate establishment of the Edinburgh Art Show. Over time the staff/volunteer ratio has gradually altered resulting in an organising committee which, with the exception of one part-time staff committee member from Macmillan Cancer Support, is totally volunteer-led. This dedicated group acknowledges the great debt it owes to the management and staff of Bonhams, to our sponsors, to the artists and to all the extra volunteers who rally round to assist at the time of each Show.

However, the encouragement and support received from you, our visitors, is equally valuable and for that we are extremely grateful. Thank you for coming and we hope that you enjoy the Show and may feel inspired to make a purchase in aid of a very worthy cause. Douglas Phillips 1926-2012

douglas studied at dundee College of art and, after military service in india and Ceylon, he worked as an illustrator in the studio of dC Thomson and Co.Ltd. drawing for The rover and The Victor. On leaving Thomson in 1966 he became a full-time painter, an illustrator of over 100 books and regularly exhibited at the rsa, rsW, rGi and the ra. douglas was a versatile painter and was accomplished in both watercolour and oils - he is probably best known for his evocative paintings of his beloved east coast of scotland. his work can be found in public and private collections worldwide as well as being reproduced as limited edition prints and fine art cards. Edinburgh Macmillan art show was privileged to have had some of douglas’ excellent work on display in our earlier shows and a generous donation has been made to the 2012 art show in his memory.

Dame Elizabeth Blackadder

The internationally-renowned artist, Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, has beena very generous supporter of our Art Show since its beginning in 2003. This year is no exception and she has presented us with two outstanding paintings. The first, “Flowers”, is an original watercolour completed very recently, while “Black Cat” is an artist’s proof. Pat Kramek trained at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art, where she gained a DA in Printed Textiles and carried on to work as a designer for various textile companies. She also taught art and computing and now lives and works in Ayrshire as a professional artist. She has exhibited in many galleries and has helped generate substantial funds for various charities. Over the last five years she has exhibited in Russia and judged the St. Petersburg Annual Schools Exhibition. She was the invited artist who represented Scotland in the 39th Interceltique Festival, Lorient. Pat is a long-standing supporter of the show.

and other healthcare professionals offer

vital one-to-one support that improves so

many lives. They also support people with

advanced cancer to lead as active a life as

possible and then die in the manner that

they choose. We’re there in many other

ways too. We’re out in the community

with our information and support services,

self-help and support groups and through

with our thriving online community, day and

night. We’re in hospitals, creating better

environments and more joined-up patient

experiences. We’re even at Parliaments and

to listen to the needs of people with cancer.

a record number of people in 2011.

population ageing, more people than

ever are living with cancer, yet not enough

money is going into the system. it means
