Jakarta (Bali Post)—Indonesia has been visited by 3,364,884 foreign tourists during the period of

January-May 2013 or it grew 5.79 percent over the same period last year amount-ing to 3,180,779 foreign tourists.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu said in Jakarta on Monday (Jul 1) that foreign tourist arrival in May 2013 reached 700,708 people. “The number grew 7.65 percent compared to May 2012 amounting to 650,883 foreign tourists,” she said. Growth in May 2013 was largely contributed by tour-ists from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia where the respective growth reached over two digits.

Cumulatively, during the period of January-May 2013 the high growth of for-eign tourist arrival by nationality was experienced by the United Arab Emirates at 81.15 percent, Egypt (19.62 percent), Saudi Arabia (18.30 percent), Thailand (16.15 percent) and China (13.83 percent). “According to our analysis, some international concerts, other convention activities and religious tourism activities drove the rising number of foreign tourist arrival in May 2013,” she said.

In addition, promotional efforts made late last year to attract more tourists from Europe started to show the results. “Among the five countries included in the 16 target markets, only Germany indicated a slight decrease. Meanwhile, for the market like England, France, Germany and Russia showed a positive growth in May 2013 compared to last year,” she said.

Her party welcomed the positive trend of the Indonesian tourism within the past five months. According to her, it showed a bright outlook for tourism in Indonesia as well as evidence that Indonesia remained a significant tourist destination.

The ministry had set a target of foreign tourist arrival in 2013 in three scenarios, namely the pessimistic target at 8.3 million, moderate target at 8.6 million and optimistic target at 8.9 million tourists.

At the same occasion, the minister said that among the 16 major markets, the tourist arrival from Australia in May 2013 increased by 4.7 percent or 75,031 people, China rose 21.1 percent or 52,632 people, Singapore rose 8.5 percent or 108,160 people, Malaysia rose 7.1 percent or 115,899 people and Japan rose 13.9 percent or 35,073 people. “Japanese market in particular after the tsunami in March 2011 kept on growing,” she said. Position of Japanese tourist arrival in May 2013 was recorded to be better than May 2012 showing an increase of 12 percent, while the accumulation of foreign tourist arrival from Japan in January-May 2013 reached 184,025 people, an increase of 10.3 percent. Such a figure was better than the same period last year rising only 3.83 percent. (010)

It was revealed when the Spe-cial Committee of the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) held a hearing with the executive on Monday (Jul 1). The hearing was led by Chairman of the Special Committee, Mangku Putu Mertayasa, with six com-mittee members. Meanwhile, the executive attending the hearing was the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) Buleleng, Gede Suyasa.

Putu Mangku Mertayasa said the certainty of the airport location in Kubutambahan sub-district had been firm enough. Moreover, the location certainty had been supported by a letter from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transportation, where the loca-tion of the international airport was in Kubutambahan subdis-trict. “The letter has been issued and it answers about the airport location in Buleleng and can no longer be moved,” he said.

According to Mertayasa, after getting the certainty on the location of the international airport the committee requested the Kubutambahan subdistrict to be included in the clause of the

regional bylaw draft (Ranperda) on the Buleleng Regional Spa-tial Plan. Having been put into the clause, he also had the region named. “We asked to propose it in the clause of the regional by-law draft on the Regional Spatial Plan of Buleleng County and Bali Province, so that they will be coherent,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Head of Buleleng Development Planning Agency, Gede Suyasa, said the advice of Special Committee proposing to put the Kubutam-bahan subdistrict as location of the international airport in the clause of the Regional Spatial Plan would be accommodated. However, the Spatial Plan would be verified again in the Bali Province and it would be de-termined whether the proposal remained to be included or not. “It is just a proposal of the Special Committee and we’ve accommodated. It will be stipu-lated after the Buleleng Spatial Plan is verified in the province,” he said.

According to Suyasa, the name of Kubutambahan subdis-trict area would be determined in the provincial strategic area

for economic interests. Aside from Kubutambahan subdis-trict, there was another location belonging to the same area, namely the Sumberkima village in Gerokgak where at the village had been built the Lieutenant Colonel Wisnu Air Strip.

In the meantime, the Re-gional Secretary of Buleleng County, Dewa Ketut Puspaka, said the certainty on the location of the international airport had become the decision of Ministry of Transportation. Even, his party had also been invited to at-tend a meeting in the Ministry of Transportation to discuss about the location certainty of the international airport. Further, it remained to make coordination on the recommendation of the Bali government with the re-gents and mayor across Bali to support the international airport development plan in Buleleng. “It has been definite and just needs a recommendation from provincial government and discussion on the management issues whether it will be purely managed by private sector or the government will participate in it,” he explained. Negara (Bali Post)—Hundreds of contraband roosters and Muscovy

ducks that could be secured at Gilimanuk were elimi-nated, Monday (Jul 1) at the quarantine cage. The poul-try smuggled by Rahim from Jember was previously secured on Sunday morning (Jun 30).

Hundreds of those poultry were deliberately hidden in the truck with license plate M 8295 UM covered with goods. As planned, the contraband poultry would be taken to Klungkung. After secured for one day, the first class Agricultural Quarantine Office (BKP) Denpasar eventually eliminated the poultry. Moreover, some poultry had died and spread stench. It was feared to have been infected by Avian Influenza or bird flu virus. The rooster secured totally reached 210 heads and while

the Muscovy duck reached 17 heads. The Head of the Denpasar Quarantine Office, Sauful

Muhtadin, through the Supervision and Enforcement Section Head, IB Eka Ludra, said the delivery was il-legal and violated the article 6 paragraph a and c, article 9 paragraph 1 of the Law No.16/1992 on Quarantine and the article a and d of the Government Regulation No.82/2000.

Besides, it also violated the Gubernatorial Regula-tion No.44/2005 on the temporary prohibition for bring-ing in adult poultry into Bali. The delivery was made without a medical examination and had the potential to spread the avian influenza virus. High need of poultry in Bali was one of the reasons for the rampant smuggling by all means to get a great profit. (kmb26)

“The government must firmly reject when the presence of investor causes an environmental damage. Do not subject to the investor and conversely do not promise anything to investors when we know if it will break the law,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Udayana Uni-versity, I Putu Anom, when met in Denpasar, Monday (Jul 1).

According to him, the reclama-tion to 400 hectares of area at Benoa Bay should go through a careful study. It was intended to avoid any bitter experience as happened to reclamation on Serangan Island and Padanggalak Beach. The reclama-tion to both areas had resulted in erosion in some areas, such as on Lebih Beach, Gianyar and Candi Dasa Beach, Karangasem.

“A comprehensive study must be done related to the environmental impact of the reclamation. Thus, it will not be like the Serangan Island and Padanggalak Beach affecting the other beaches, such as the Lebih Beach whose sea water overflows onto the street,” he said.

To that end, he said the clean and green program discoursed by local government to preserve the nature and environment should be main-tained. One of them was by saving the mangrove forests from the grab of investors that just wanted to ex-ploit the nature.

“We’ve got the clean and green

As for reclamation of Pudut Island

Govt must firmly reject environment-harming investor

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Rejection to the existence of investors that will reclaim the Benoa Bay and surrounding areas to make a marine tourism resort and other commercial enterprises continues to roll out. If the project is realized without a clear assessment, it is feared to result in environmental damages.

program, so the mangrove forests should be rigorously maintained, not just become a lip service. Ex-istence of the mangrove can safe-guard when tsunami occurs because Bali belongs to the tsunami prone area. Therefore, the mangrove for-est must be preserved and we have to reclaim the beach carefully,” he said.

He said the development of tourism industry, whether hotel, res-taurant or tourist attractions should be in harmony with the tourism programs and policies of Badung Government and Bali Government in accordance with to the regional spatial plan (RTRW).

Badung Government had already owned a Regional Development Master Plan (Ripda). It should be immediately realized, including the detailed plan of Bali Regional Spatial Plan. “Should there be any unclear zones, the tourism devel-opment will be ambiguous, and the parties having the interest will constantly hit the roof,” he said.

He hoped the government would not exploit the nature excessively just for the sake of tourism. Moreover, the development in Southern Bali had currently deviated from the ethical and aesthetic philosophy of tourism.

“There is what the so-called pub-lic view, namely the vista that can be enjoyed by the public. Since, it is a green belt it should be persistently

maintained. Like the presence of the toll road, how beautiful it will be if there is no building along the toll road and still green. Thus, travelers can still enjoy the natural scenery amidst of the hustles and bustles of the development,” he explained.

He mentioned the arrival of Ronaldo and SBY to Bali to plant mangroves should not only become a stalking horse to allow the incom-ing investors. Similarly, Balinese people should not be lulled by promises because we had to think about a long-term tourism.

“The government may not be inconsistent in enforcing the rules, but must be decisive. We’ve owned a Regional Spatial Plan and devel-opment master plan that must be executed with a clear development. To save Bali, we have to think about tourism sustainability, why should it be reclaimed and is there no other alternative land? If mangrove dies ... it should be replaced with man-grove, not with concrete building,” he said.

He suggested the tourism de-velopment should be directed to open region for investment, such as Eastern Bali and Northern Bali. All this time, the regions were rarely touched by the hands of investors. Even, they preferred to invest in Southern Bali.

“Do not only think of the land around the area. The development

of Southern Bali is in shambles. Ac-cordingly, I hope the (Pudut—Ed) island must be preserved so that tourists can see if there is an island at the location. Do not build any physical buildings, let it be green,” he advised.

Similar opinion was delivered by Deputy Chairman of the Indone-sian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali, Bagus Sudibya. Inves-tors should know about the ethics of investing, whether reclamation would not break the rules or spatial plan, damage the environment and others. This should be taken into account comprehensively.

“When wishing to invest here, why is not carried out in Eastern Bali, Northern Bali or in Nusa Peni-da, so that it will be resulting in the equitable development,” he said.

He said the rapid growth of the accommodation centralized in Southern Bali had a negative effect on tourism in Bali. This was evident from the average room occupancy rate that had decreased since the past two years.

“In the past, the room occupancy rate reached 68 percent, now re-duces to 60 percent. Room rate of five-star hotel was IDR 150, now drops to USD 10. This means that the quality of tourism has dimin-ished,” he said.

To that end, he said the govern-ment together with the tourism stakeholders and community should discuss together about the blueprint of Bali tourism in the fu-ture. Therefore, the growth of Bali tourism could be well ordered.

Rejection to the reclamation of Pudut Island was also revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bali House, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana. He said the reason for conduct-ing reclamation as the safeguard against tsunami was to invent. Even, this people’s representa-tive from Buleleng assessed the reclamation activity potentially caused the current serious enough abrasion into the more serious. “Frankly, I wonder why the rec-lamation is heralded to safeguard against the tsunami. I worry that everything is precisely reversed where our beaches are increas-ingly destroyed by abrasion. So, this plan should be reviewed again. Even, if necessary, the reclamation should not be made at all,” he said.

If the government was indeed committed to securing Bali from tsunami, he said, the endeavor encouraged was the greening pro-gram by planting mangroves along the coastal territories of Bali.

If any location whose man-grove forests had been bare, it should be re-greened. He affirmed that healthy mangrove vegetation was obviously much more effec-tive to counter the tsunami and abrasion than reclamation. “I will more agree if the mangrove refor-estation activities are undertaken as an effort to protect the coastal areas of Bali, not by reclamation that will potentially make the condition of Bali more seriously damaged,” he warned. Bali News International4 Wednesday, July 3, 2013

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

After the loss of hundreds of dy-namites in Java, the Denpasar Metro Police have anticipated from the beginning. Security at vital objects as well as on the borders of land and sea continues to be improved. It was delivered by Chief of Denpasar Met-ro Police, I Wayan Sunartha, after serving as inspector of the ceremony in relation to the 67th anniversary of Bhayangkara in the Denpasar Metro Police, Monday (Jul 1).

He asserted there was an effort

to increase the security in Denpasar Metro Police jurisdiction. His party had made synergy with all the exist-ing elements, namely the Indonesian Army, local government and the entire community. “We’ve been anticipating since the beginning. It is carried out by interception and implementation of ‘creating condition’ operation at all border areas,” he said.

In addition, his party also antici-pated the marine areas. Fishermen had been appealed to keep the coast because many fishermen were doing fish transaction getting in East Java.

“Our region has a sea as well. Of course, it also gets the attention and our personnel have been instructed to coordinate with fishermen,” he told reporters last Monday.

Especially for Kuta area, said Su-nartha, all the subdistrict police chiefs, public figures and pecalang (customary security taskforce) had been deployed to the field. They worked together to anticipate so they would not be cheated. The superior had instructed his ranks to carry out a control against regional migrants, conduct a raid and patrol on the road at all times.

The Head of BPS Bali, Gde Su-arsa, said the inflation last June was very much affected by the fuel price hike policy. Nevertheless, in terms of the total inflation occurred, the last month’s inflation remained slightly small. Other than the fuel price hike, some other commodities in the group of transport, communications and financial services also contributed greatly to the inflation. Air transport reflected by the increase in air fares during the holiday season accounted for inflation by 0.0416 percent, inter-

city transport by 0.0142 percent and diesel by 0.0050 percent.

“Such condition placed Denpasar on the highest position as the city mostly affected by the inflation in the transportation group. As compari-son, in the same period the Greater Jakarta area underwent the inflation rate of 0.93, while the share of in-flation in the transport group only reached 2.81,” explained Suarsa in Denpasar, Monday (Jun 1).

He said if Denpasar was com-pared to Surabaya, the inflation rate

in Surabaya reached 0.55, while the inflation share of the transport group reached 3.03. In the meantime, in Mataram the inflation rate reached 0.91, while the share of inflation for transport group in the region reached 3.26. “Last June, of the total existing expenditure, only the foodstuffs and clothing group were becoming the backstop of inflation or showed a deflation,” he said.

Meanwhile, an economist from the Undiknas University, Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Raka Suardana, assessed the inflation surge would occur this July due to the increase in the subsi-dized fuel price and public spending due to the new academic year.

“This July, the group of educa-tion will surely go up due to the new academic year. Meanwhile, the foodstuff has increased earlier and

so has the processed food. Ahead of the Eid, the clothing group will surely increase because people will buy clothes,” he said.

He was pessimistic about the in-flation target in 2013 in the amend-ed State Budget amounting to 7.2 percent. Moreover, the endeavor of the government to secure the price surge a week after the fuel price hike was not significantly visible. The inflation of 7.2 percent was assumed to be plus or minus one percent. When reaching 8.2 percent, it remained in the target range.

“However, can the 8.2 percent be achieved? In my opinion, it’s a bit difficult, at least between 8.5 to 8.7 percent due to strong drive of the in-appropriate fuel price hike. Neces-sarily, the increase should be made a year ago, and should not be directly

in a large amount, such as by gradu-ally IDR 500 per three months,” he explained. He explained that by in-creasing the fuel price gradually, the psychological impact was not great. Reflecting from the past experience, the contribution of fuel price hike to the inflation lay in the range of 2.2 to 2.4 percent and it usually occurred during the first 3 months for the first round and the second round. After that, the inflation would decline.

“I think the surge in inflation during June remaining in warm-ing-up stage. Nevertheless, the percentage of increase is partially significant to some basic needs and transportation. For example, the price of staple food rose in the range of 10 percent and public transport tariff has risen about 20 percent,” he explained. (kmb27)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The office of Regional Devel-opment Bank (BPD) and Animal Market at Beringkit, Mengwi, re-ceived a bomb terror, Monday (Jul 1). Inevitably, the people around the Beringkit Market were panic and kept away from the location. However, after searched by the bomb squad of Bali Police Mobile Brigade, it was not found any haz-ardous objects in both offices.

Information in the field men-tioned if the bomb terror began when a stranger contacted the BPD Branch Office at Beringkit Market at 09:30 a.m. via telephone. The

unidentified perpetrator said there were bombs getting ready to ex-plode in the office of the BPD and Animal Market.

Knowing the information, the BPD employee reported it to Ba-dung Police and it was forwarded to bomb squad of Bali Police Mobile Brigade. Not long after, the bomb squad came to the scene for con-ducting searches. “Previously, the BPD employees and the others have been evacuated. They were secured in the office of Badung Market,” said the source last Monday.

The source explained the bomb squad personnel dressed in com-plete uniform immediately led to

the BPD office and Animal Market. They searched the two offices. After checking for few times, they found no hazardous objects, let alone bomb. Besides, the canine squad was also deployed to track.

Other than in both offices, the sweeping was also conducted in other places like in clothing stores. As a result, they found nothing and declared the location to be safe from bomb threat. “Though it was a ter-ror, it should be checked in details. Thankfully, the personnel did not find any bombs. To that end, the case is still under investigation,” he said while asking the name to be unpublished.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Almost for three months the ra-diotherapy services at Sanglah Hos-pital have not been running for treat-ing patients. As a result, 46 cancer patients requiring the therapy have to wait or take another therapy.

According to the Division Head of Medical Support of Sanglah Hospital, Ken Wirasandhi, the radiotherapy equipment was not operated because it did not comply with the standards of the Joint Com-mission International (JCI). “Since it does not comply with the security standards of the JCI, we cannot op-erate the radiotherapy equipment of Sanglah Hospital,” said Ken.

Radiotherapy equipment currently owned by Sanglah Hospital did not belong to the latest, but to the old ver-sion. In order to operate the service again, the Sanglah Hospital should provide the latest radiotherapy equip-ment. However, according to Ken, to accomplish it would take time in the matter of budget and planning. The purchase of new radiotherapy equipment, added Ken, should also be accompanied with a redesign of the radiology building. “The build-ing must be redesigned to meet the function of the new equipment. The walls must be thickened to prevent any radiation from the equipment out of the room,” said Ken.Due to non-operating radiotherapy equip-ment at Sanglah Hospital, the patients

requiring the therapy could not be served for a while. Approximately 46 cancer patients should discontinue their treatment and wait until the new equipment had been available at San-glah Hospital.

For those patients, added Ken, the Sanglah Hospital suggested to take another cancer therapy existing at Sanglah Hospital such as chemo-therapy. “Cancer patients requiring radiotherapy are currently attempted to take another cancer treatment available at Sanglah Hospital like chemotherapy. Treatment option will be tailored to the type of cancer and the doctor’s advice,” said Ken.

Up to these days, continued Ken, there was no cancer patient referred to outside Bali to undergo the radio-therapy. “Radiotherapy service in Bali is only available at Sanglah Hospital. However, although it is not currently in operation, the hospital management has not referred any patients yet to out-side Bali,” said Ken. In order the ser-vice could be re-operated, the Sanglah Hospital was trying to immediately provide the new equipment.

However, he also hoped the public awareness to treat the cancer early because if it was known at an early stage, the treatment given would not need the stage of radio-therapy. “When treated at early stage, the patient will certainly not require radiotherapy. This treatment is usually for cancer of terminal or advanced stage,” said Ken. (san)

Transportation sector raises inflation in DenpasarDenpasar (Bali Post)—

Transportation sector was the biggest inflation contributor in Den-pasar. Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali recorded that inflation in the capital of Bali Province reached 0.47 percent in June 2013. This figure is predominantly contributed by the increase in transportation cost coming to 3.80 or giving contribution 0.6323 of total inflation.

NUSA DUA - PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) said it will start using bio-fuel for all of its aircraft in 2015.

Garuda will use 10 million liters of the alternative fuel in 2015 in mixture with other aviation fuel, Novianto Herupratomno, the operation director of the country’s flag carrier, said.

However, the target could be reached depending on the availability of bio-duel, Novianto said.

It is only a small part of fuel needed by the entire aircraft of the airline.

Currently the airline has 96 units of aircraft and the number is expected to increase to 144 units in 2015, Novianto said here on Tuesday.

He said an aircraft will need around 10 million liters of fuel a year.

He said Garuda hopes that bio-fuel could be produced in large scale in the country with competitive prices.

Meanwhile, the transport ministry said in 2016, all airlines in the country are expected to use bio-fuel in mixture with oil fuel in 2016.

“The fuel will not be pure bio-fuel. It will be a mix-ture,” Deputy Transport Minister Bambang Susantono said.

The alternative fuel for land transport is bio-diesel, a mixture between bio-fuel and diesel oil, and the alterna-tive fuel for aviation is bio-ethanol.

Marigold farmer Ni Made Gading harvests her flowers at a plantation in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday, July 2, 2013. Hindus in Indonesia often use flowers while praying and as offering to their gods.

DUBBED as the rice barn of Bali, Tabanan has a myriad temples related to subak and prosperity. One of them is the universal temple known as Pucak Bukit Puun temple located at Soka customary village, Senganan, Penebel, Tabanan. As the name implies, the temple is located on the mountaintop. To achieve the temple, it is required a hard struggle because the pathway leading to location is new and steep, so that vehicle is unable to reach out the temple. Therefore, pilgrims should walk about for 2 hours. The pathway to the temple is quite beautiful and within a pristine forest.

The Pucak Bukit Puun perches right on the mountain top. Its location is almost adjacent to Lake Tamblingan. On that account, this temple has the meaning of prosperity for farmers. Chronicle regard-ing the temple has not been found. But based on the stories of local residents, the Bukit Puun (in Balinese language) means ‘the burning peak’ conveying if the hilltop was once totally burned out. Since then, the peak was known as Bukit Puun. This peak is closely related to Pucak Adeng located next to it. It is said, the charcoal or adeng (Balinese) from the top of the burning peak was thrown up onto the Adeng Hill. Thus, it was then called Pucak Adeng.

The Pucak Bukit Puun is believed to be a symbol of prosperity. On that account, it becomes a sanctum for farmers to ask for blessing of salvation. According to word-to-mouth stories, when the subak territory in Tabanan Kingdom was attacked by diseases, farmers should come to Pucak Bukit Puun temple to invoke purificatory holy water. “If the attack was turning more serious, it could be got rid of after the subak board came to pray to the temple,” said a senior figure of Soka village, Nyoman Sirta, accompanied by the temple priest, Jero Mangku Wayan Arsana. The Pucak Puun temple is also associated with the Ulun Danu Tamblingan and Ulun Siwi Batu Lumbang equally representing the prosperity of subak.

Pujawali or anniversary of the Pucak Bukit Puun falls every full moon of the eighth month in Balinese calendar (around February). Interestingly, it coincides with the monsoon. Since it is difficult to reach the temple site, the anniversary ritual is usually centered in the representative at Kahyangan Desa temple in the form of seven-tiered meru shrine. “By and large, we just assigned the representatives to come to the temple on hilltop due to the difficulty of terrain,” said Sirta. However, since the past few weeks, the pathway to the hilltop has been widened. Thus, people can easily reach the temple though it has to be covered on foot. Opening of this new pathway was also marked with the discovery of ancient shrine believed to be the central shrine of the Pucak Bukit Puun temple.

According to story, the deity venerated in the temple was from Semeru, Lumajang, East Java. The figure was deliberately assigned to Tabanan to assist the govern-ment of Tabanan when holding melasti procession to the sea. “It was said when the deity of Pucak Bukit Puun has not yet arrived, the sea water will not recede,” he explained. Until now, the ritual of presenting the deity of Pucak Bukit Puun is always held when organizing a melasti procession. On that account, the patron of Pucak Bukit Puun temple is the king of Tabanan. According to story, the son of deity on Pucak Bukit Puun married the daughter of the deity at Tanah Lot.

The Pucak Bukit Puun temple has a number of shrines. One of them is the principal shrine namely the two-tiered meru shrine used to venerate Nyoman Bagus Aeng. With the discovery of ancient shrine recently, the number of shrine increased. As planned, the temple area will be expanded and made more permanent. Thus, all pilgrims will be able to come and say prayers by their vehicle. (BTN/kmb)

“Although I am convicted of nothing, it has unilaterally revoked my passport, leaving me a stateless person,” Snowden says in the state-ment. “Without any judicial order, the administration now seeks to stop me exercising a basic right. A right that belongs to everybody. The right to seek asylum. “Their purpose is to frighten, not me, but those who would come after me.”

WikiLeaks legal adviser Sarah Harrison delivered the requests for asylum to an official at the Russian consulate at the Moscow airport on Sunday, according to the website. WikiLeaks says some of the requests have already been delivered to the appropriate embassies.

The WikiLeaks statement said requests were made to China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, India and sev-eral European countries. Snowden had planned earlier to seek asylum in Ecuador and has requested asy-lum in Russia. The asylum requests reported by WikiLeaks and the Snowden statement could not be independently authenticated.

Snowden, who has been on the run since releasing sensitive NSA

documents, is believed to have been in Moscow airport’s transit zone since his arrival from Hong Kong on June 23. The U.S. has annulled his passport, and Ecuador, where he had hoped to get asylum, has been giving mixed signals about offering him shelter.

After Snowden applied for politi-cal asylum to remain in Russia, Rus-sian President Vladimir Putin told reporters in Moscow that Snowden would have to stop leaking U.S. secrets if he wanted asylum there - and he added that Snowden seemed unwilling to stop publishing leaks of classified material. At the same time, Putin said he had no plans to turn over Snowden to the United States.

The expanded requests for asylum come as the Obama administration contends with European allies angry about the release of documents that alleged U.S. eavesdropping on Eu-ropean Union diplomats.

Obama, in an African news con-ference with Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, said the U.S. would provide allies with information about new reports that the NSA had bugged EU offices in Washington,

New York and Brussels. But he also suggested such activity by govern-ments would hardly be unusual.

“We should stipulate that every intelligence service -not just ours, but every European intelligence service, every Asian intelligence service, wherever there’s an intel-ligence service - here’s one thing that they’re going to be doing: They’re going to be trying to understand the world better, and what’s going on in world capitals around the world,” he said. “If that weren’t the case, then there’d be no use for an intelligence service.”

The latest issue concerns al-legations, published in the Ger-man newsweekly Der Spiegel, of U.S. spying on European officials. French President Francois Hollande demanded Monday that the U.S. im-mediately stop any such eavesdrop-ping and suggested the widening controversy could jeopardize next week’s opening of trans-Atlantic trade talks between the United States and Europe. “We cannot accept this kind of behavior from partners and allies,” Hollande said on French television.

A Russian rocket exploded in a massive fireball late Monday (July 1), destroying three navigation satellites after a failed launch that appeared to veer out of control shortly after liftoff and crash back to Earth.

The unmanned Proton rocket lifted off from the Central Asian spaceport of Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 10:38 p.m. EDT (0238 GMT), where the local time was early morning on Tuesday, July 2.

Video of the launch shows the 17-story rocket rising from its launch pad, then oscillating wildly and rolling as it pitched over and plunged back to Earth. The rocket burst into flames and began to break apart just before slamming into the ground and erupting into a colossal conflagration.

Built by Russia’s Krunichev State Research and Production Center, the Proton rocket was carrying three Glonass navigation satellites for Russia. It marked the fifth Proton rocket launch of 2013.

Russia’s Proton rockets have suffered five major launch failures since De-cember 2010. The most recent failure was in December 2012, when a Proton rocket launched a telecommunications satellite into the wrong orbit.

The Proton rocket family returned to flight in March of this year and was followed by three successful flights until Monday’s failed launch.

This latest Proton rocket incident will likely lead to an in-depth investiga-tion to trace the cause of the launch failure, with further launches awaiting the conclusion of that analysis.

WikiLeaks: Snowden makes expanded asylum requestsAssociated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, believed to be in legal limbo in the Moscow airport, is expanding his requests for asylum to another 19 countries, including China, according to WikiLeaks. WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group that has adopted Snowden and his cause, on Monday night posted a statement said to be from Snowden that slammed President Barack Obama for “using citizenship as a weapon.”

“It’s a global market,” Joe Crilly, a spokesman for British bookies William Hill, told AFP. “British people love the royal family and so do people around the world.”

The big money is on the baby’s name, which Crilly said people had been betting on with “full gusto.”

Traditional names head the list, led by Alexandra and followed by Charlotte, Elizabeth, Diana and Victoria when it comes to girls’ names, and George, James and Louis for boys.

Alexandra is Queen Elizabeth II’s middle name, Charlotte is the mid-dle name of Kate’s sister Pippa and the name of King George III’s wife, while Victoria would honour Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

Unlikelier choices include Hashtag, the Twitter term on which Irish bookmaker Paddy Power took a bet at 500/1, and Wayne and Waynetta, after the slobby characters in a British television comedy, at 250/1 and 500/1 respectively. Punters can also get odds of 5,000/1 on Psy, after the South Korean pop star, or North, the name of rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s new baby.

“We are seeing a tug of war with a quite modern couple like William and Kate on one hand but they have a royal family to appease, 1,000 years of tradition and they don’t want to upset the queen,” Rory Scott, a spokesman for Paddy Power, told AFP.

Girls’ names dominate the odds because punters seem convinced the royal baby will be a girl, after Kate reportedly nearly let it slip during a public appearance earlier this year.

Odds are normally equal for both genders but in this case the odds are nearly twice as long on a male for most bookies.

The most volatile topic is the date of the birth, with several betting companies slashing the odds on the first week of July instead of the expected date of around July 13.

That was partly because of reports that Kate may follow Princess Diana, who gave the press the slip by announcing a later than actual due date when she was pregnant with William in 1981, said Scott.

But bookies said they had not taken many bets on that topic.“Nobody knows when it was conceived, people are just speculat-

ing,” said Crilly.Punters are however weighing into other apparently unpredictable

matters. The favourite for hair colour is brown followed by blonde or black,

with ginger hair like the new arrival’s uncle Prince Harry generally the least favoured.

Meanwhile William and Kate are both equally placed to be the one who holds the baby outside the hospital for the traditional pho-tograph.

The bookmakers said that there was always the risk of an “insider bet” from members of the royal inner circle, with a couple of bets on names raising eyebrows in recent months.

But the betting companies said they were unlikely to close their books even if such bets came in.

Djokovic hardly broke sweat in the first set on Centre Court but he always knew it would not be that straightforward against the elegant stylist who had twice beaten him on grass.

The evergreen Haas, 35, matched Djokovic shot for shot thereafter but fell to a 6-1 6-4 7-6(4) defeat, ending his hopes of becoming the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Dutchman Tom Okker in 1979.

Haas, whose single-handed back-hand remains a stroke of wonder, led 4-2 in the second set and then hit back from 5-2 down in the third to stretch Djokovic into a tiebreak.

For the army of Andy Murray

fans hoping to cheer the Scot to the title, the occasional Djokovic lapse offers hope yet when it really mat-tered the six-times major winner showed the deadly precision that has taken him to world number one.

The hurdles will get higher for Djokovic starting with Tomas Berdych, who beat him in 2010 semis, but he says he is playing bet-ter than when he beat Rafa Nadal to win the title in 2011.

“I feel good about myself in this moment,” he told reporters. “I think I actually play better tennis on grass than I played two years ago when I won this tournament. “I had a minor setback in the third set and I allowed him an opportunity to come back to the match. But I played a great tiebreak and I’m really glad to fin-ish in three.”

With the light fading and the prospect of the match being finished under the roof lights, there was an added sense of urgency as Djokovic bossed the tiebreak.

“If I had lost the third set and maybe they go on and close the

roof and go under the lights deep in the night, you can’t predict the result after that,” he said. “That’s why I really wanted to get the job done.”

As the seeds have tumbled in both the men’s and women’s draws, Djokovic has been watertight and has arrived at the business end of the tournament looking as fresh as a daisy.

It is quite a difference to the crestfallen figure who saw victory slip through his fingers in an epic French Open semi-final defeat by Rafa Nadal last month.

“When you lose, that’s when you really start thinking about what you should do next,” he said. “A lot of tentative, maybe negative thoughts go through your mind. “It’s a big challenge mentally to overcome that and manage to understand what you need to do.”

By that same token Djokovic points to his 2010 Wimbledon semi-final defeat by Berdych as the springboard that elevated his career into orbit.

“I had quite a turbulent five, six months of 2010 but the semi-finals of Wimbledon came in the right time for me because I felt that was like a springboard for me,” he said. “From that moment on, everything started going uphill really.”

CALVI, Corsica - A funny thing about the Tour de France is that it can give its competitors the most fabulous terrain to ride over, but it cannot force them to race. Instead of being the very tricky day full of traps and surprises that Tour teams feared and organizers hoped for, Stage Three of the 100th edition proved to be a bit of a dud: 10 out of 10 visually, with some of the most stunning coastal scenery ever visited by the 110-year-old race, but barely 2 out of 10 for drama.

In fact, as pretty as Corsica - France’s “island of beauty” - was, riders were just as happy to whiz past it. “Twisty roads like that along the coast, stunning scenery, and I’m sure it made for great shots from the helicopter,” said race favorite Chris Froome. “But that’s not what we were interested in.”

So be it. In a three-week test of endur-ance, it’s simply physically impossible for every stage to be a classic and provide great excitement. There are days, like on Monday, when the peloton decides the priority is to get from A to B safely, get back to the hotel, massage, eat and sleep. To have success at the Tour, you first have to survive it.

“The race is always what the riders make of it,” the Tour director, Christian Prudhomme, said philosophically. Jan Bakelants was happy. The Belgian rider started the day in the yellow jersey that he won with a clever and gutsy spurt of riding on Sunday, and he will wear it again for at least another day, during the team time trial on Stage Four on Tuesday. The teams will race against the clock, heading off one after the other in aerodynamic helmets, on a pancake-flat, 25-kilomete course in Nice, past the coastal town’s airport and along its famous beachside avenue, the Promenade des Anglais.

With that very technical and quick or-deal awaiting them, and because coastal headwinds slowed the riders, none of the 21 other teams could be bothered to really try hard to take the lead on Monday from Bakelants.

His RadioShack teammates did a grand job of protecting him. They rode much of the stage at the front of the pack, not letting breakaway riders get too far ahead and dis-couraging other teams from any thoughts of making a concerted assault. Their man-agement of the stage helped make for dull racing - but it kept Bakelants in yellow.

“We never panicked,” he said. “We man-aged the gaps.”

Despite the defeat, “our first team is the best example for us. Their composure, their attitude, we get a lot of energy every time we watch them,” Lopetegui said.

After becoming the only team to win all three group matches, Spain will continue its quest for the world title on Tuesday against Mexico in the most appealing tie of the first knockout round.

Also, France will take on host Turkey, Uruguay plays Nigeria and Greece faces Uzbekistan. Spain advanced from what was arguably the toughest group of all

ISTANBUL — Spain’s drubbing by Brazil in the Confederations Cup final has given its youth team additional motivation to take home the Under-20 World Cup. Coach Julen Lopetegui said on Monday his team is ready to go all the way and win the title for a second time after 1999.

six with remarkable ease. It routed the United States 4-1, beat 2009 champion Ghana 1-0, and saw off France 2-1.

Lopetegui, who led Spain to the European Under-19 title two years ago, could afford to rotate a lot and use all 18 field players in his 21-man squad during the three matches. “For us the most important is that the group is strong,” the coach said.

Defender Derik was one of just five players featured in every starting lineup, along with striker Jese, who is the team’s top goal-

scorer with four.According to Lopetegui, Derik

“is a very important player for us. He has the technique, the concen-tration, the courage.”

The rotation of players didn’t affect the fluency of Spain’s game in the group stage. Spain plays like the much-hailed first team, applying the same so-called tiki-taka style of short passing and constant movement of its players, aiming at ball possession for as long as possible.

The resemblance between both teams is significant, according to

coach Muhsin Ertugral of Turkey, a member of the FIFA technical study group who analyzes all matches during the U20 World Cup.

Ertugral said Spain was an example how applying a similar approach to playing football in all youth levels can bring long-term success.

“When you look to the first Spanish team,” Ertugral said, “and when you look at the Spanish (U20) team you can see certain players exactly like Xavi, like Busquets, even like Casillas. This is a quite amazing situation.”

Opponent Mexico was widely regarded as one of the favorites after winning the qualifying tournament in Central America in

March. But after losing its opening two group matches against Greece and Paraguay, it only just managed to advance to the round of 16 by beating Mali 4-1.

“The third place doesn’t reflect their quality,” Lopetegui said. “It was a tough group where they came from ... Mexico has a big team. They are winners of the World Cup Under-17 and they have players who won the Olympic Games.”

Lopetegui warned his players they might have to dig deep to get past Mexico. “They did well, I admire them for their work. They have a lot of ability and skill,” the coach said. “We will need to thrive to the limit to win against Mexico because I think they are a strong team.”

RIO DE JANEIRO — Neymar finally came through for Brazil, proving his worth to the world and showing

Brazilian fans that he has what it takes to lead the national team at the World Cup next year.

The 21-year-old Neymar was voted player of the tournament at the Confederations Cup and was decisive in Brazil’s 3-0 victory against Spain in Sunday’s final at the Maracana Stadium.

He arrived at the World Cup warm-up tournament enveloped in doubt after a series of lackluster performances with the national team, but is leaving acclaimed both in Brazil and abroad.

The Confederations Cup marks the coming of age for Neymar, giving him his first title with Brazil’s senior team just

before he makes his much-anticipated move to European football to join Barcelona.

“It turned out to be even better than I expected,” Neymar said. “I’m really happy to have played well and

that the Selecao came out with the title in the end.”Neymar has been touted as the future of Brazilian football

for some time, but until now he hadn’t been able to replicate his club success with the national team, raising doubts about whether he could be considered the player carrying Brazil’s hopes for a world title at home next year.

Neymar was among the players loudly booed by more than 50,000 Brazilian fans after a disappointing draw in a friendly with Chile just two months ago. He had been mediocre in the other two competitions he played with Brazil, the 2011 Copa America and the 2012 Olympic tournament.

“I’m really happy with the way things happened,” Neymar said. “I hope it can continue like that, but I have to take it one tournament at a time.”

Neymar was named man of the match in four of the five Confederations Cup matches, including in the final at the Maracana. He was in the move that led to Brazil’s

MANCHESTER, England — As a new era began at Manchester United on Monday, a lingering problem from the final days of Alex Ferguson’s trophy-laden tenure was casting a shadow over David Moyes’ first official day in charge of the English champions.

Nearly two months after being hired as successor to Ferguson, Moyes was met by a row of photographers under gray skies when he arrived at United’s training ground to start his planning ahead of the new season.

Moyes has already put his stamp on the new role, bringing in three coaches from former club Everton to join his backroom staff, but it’s the future of Wayne Rooney that will be the Scot’s biggest priority this week.

Speculation over where the England striker will be playing next season has been dominating the sports pages in British newspapers this offseason — and will continue to do so until he sits down with Moyes and the pair decide where Rooney’s future lies.

Rooney, who isn’t due in for the first day of training until Wednesday or Thursday, sat out the final matches of Ferguson’s 26-year tenure after putting in a transfer request because he was frustrated at being substituted in some matches last season, notably the Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have been heavily linked with the burly striker, even though Ferguson insisted before he ended his time at United that Rooney wouldn’t be leaving.

The situation is even more delicate because it was Moyes who sold Rooney to United back in 2004, when manager of Everton, and then launched successful legal action against the striker over allegations in Rooney’s autobiography that the Scot leaked details of a private conversation to the media about the factors behind the move from Everton.

The pair’s relationship has improved since then, but Moyes has to decide whether to persevere with a player who has tested the patience and loyalty of United fans after putting in two transfer requests in 2 ½ years.

If there is no official announcement regarding Rooney over the next week, the make-up of the United squad to tour the Far East from July 10 will make interesting reading.

SAO PAULO - Influential Brazil midfielder Paulinho has accepted an offer from Tottenham Hotspur and will join the Premier League club from Corinthians before the start of the season, the player said on Monday.

A powerful box-to-box midfielder, Paulinho, who scored 34 goals in 167 games for Corinthians, shone in Brazil’s successful Confederations Cup campaign last month.

“These were three wonderful years of my career, of

victories, of working with great people, who always helped me,” Paulinho said in a tearful farewell on Monday. “All I have to say to Corinthians is ‘I’ll be back’.”

Widespread media reports say Spurs will pay 20 million euros ($26.07 million) for the 24-year old, who helped Sao Paulo side Corinthians to the World Club Cup in December and became a regular choice for the national side.

He picked up the bronze boot trophy for the third best player in the Confederations Cup on Sunday, shortly after Brazil destroyed world champions Spain 3-0 in the final.

ReutersArsenal have signed French youth international

striker Yaya Sanogo on a long-term contract, the London club said on their website (www.arsenal.com) on Monday. Sanogo, 20, a free agent after leaving Ligue 2 team Auxerre, has represented his country at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level

and is currently with the national side in Turkey for the Under-20 World Cup.

He has scored in two of their three matches in Tur-key, helping France qualify for the knockout phase.

Sanogo had been with Auxerre since the age of 14. He made 24 first team appearances and scored 11 goals.

GIANYAR - Gianyar County has a tourist attraction offering cool nature. The existing atmosphere and tourist attraction are not far different from what Bedugul offers. However, the road access is not adequate to be passed

through by large size tourist transport. Under-standably, it is a new tourist attraction having begun to develop since 2004.

Its name is Sekar Bumi Farm & Florist (SBFF) located at Kerta village, Payangan - Gianyar or about 43 km north of Denpasar City. Perched on the altitude of 700 meters

above the sea level, the Sekar Bumi Farm & Florist poses a center of plantation that sup-plies a variety of heliconia cut flowers.

More than 200 types of flowers are avail-able here, including torch banana, lime banana, sexy pink and yellow dancer with a variety of colors. “Sekar Bumi supplies a

variety of flowers and leaves cut as well as decorative plants for tourism industry,” said Ketut Subagia, the owner of the SBFF.

This SBFF spreads across 18 hectares of land, where 12 hectares are intended for culti-vating cut flowers. Meanwhile, the remaining area is taken advantage for the outbound and ecotourism development. For tourists liking a challenge, they can take advantage of a variety of games such as flying fox, fine ball, trekking, cycling and outdoor games involv-ing a lot of participants.

Flying fox here was probably the longest in Bali. It has rope length of 500 meters to 700 meters. Similarly, it offers a unique path passing over a cliff, hanging bridge and there were five very stressful points. Meanwhile, the fine ball is a game for challenging guts with a range of 10 meters. The bullet in use is made from organic materials so that their debris will not harm the nature.

Other than being good for relaxing, this beautiful tourist attraction is also a good place for children education. Through the program, they can get a garden tour on the environ-mental subjects such as arranging flowers, learning to farm, planting trees, fertilizing, picking crops and having a closer look at rare trees to making compost.

For those favoring to live with nature, a camp ground is available here. Although lo-cated on a high land, the SBFF can also prepare fresh clean water being ready to drink. The wa-ter flows through a tunnel, an ancient method used by local people to irrigate their rice fields. There is also a performance stage for those wishing to celebrate their happiness.

Irrigation system of subak organization in Bali can also be found here. Travelers can ex-perience the activities of local farmers in Bali such plowing the land by cows, planting rice, and fishing for eels, while at the verge stands an old house and ample parking space.

L A M PA H A N , B A N D A ACEH - About 50 people have been injured after a 6.1-mag-nitude quake Tuesday in the Indonesian province of Aceh caused their houses to collapse, a doctor said.

“We have received around 50 people with injuries suffered when the walls of their houses collapsed,” Ema Suryani, a doc-tor at a health clinic in Lampa-han city, Bener Meriah district, told AFP.

“The injuries vary from open wounds to broken bones.”

A strong 6.1-magnitude earth-quake struck the northwestern Indonesian province of Aceh on Tuesday, the US Geological Sur-vey said, sending people running into the streets in panic.

There were no immediate re-

ports of damage after the quake struck inland at a depth of just 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), 55 kilometres south of Bireun and 72 kilometres southeast of Re-uleuet, said the USGS.

People ran out of buildings in panic in the provincial capital Banda Aceh as the quake shook houses for around one minute, an AFP journalist at the scene said.

But the USGS estimated there was a low likelihood of casual-ties or damage.

A massive quake struck off Aceh in 2004, sparking a tsu-nami that killed 170,000 people in the province on Sumatra and tens of thousands more in coun-tries around the Indian Ocean.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The tension was triggered by protest from thousands of local people last Sunday (June 30) to-wards President Mohamed Mour-si’s government, official said.

“We ask Indonesian citizens in Egypt to remain calm but still on alert over the recent tension,” spokesman to the embassy Dahlia Kusuma Dewi said here on Tues-day.

She explained although the embassy has released warning towards its citizen, the office will be open as usual.

Currently there are about 5,000 Indonesians residing in Egypt. Most of them are students who not

only live in Cairo but also other cities in Egypt.

At least four were killed in Up-per Egypt on Sunday during armed attacks on anti-president protests nationwide, while over 250 others were injured in the pro- and anti-president protests in the governor-ates of Cairo, Alexandria, Daqahl-iya, Gharbiya, Minufiya, Beheira, Fayoum, Assiut and Beni Suef.

Hundreds of thousands of Egyp-tians flooded to the major squares in the country on the first anni-versary of the Islamist-oriented president on Sunday to oust him and call for an early presidential election.

AntaraSURABAYA - President Susilo

Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the military and police cadets to be ready to face technological challenges and to carry out their tasks properly.

“The military and police cadets must be ready to face technologi-cal challenges. We have signifi-cantly modernize our weaponry system to maintain sovereignty and territorial integrity of Indo-nesia,” President Yudhoyono said

when inaugurating 735 military and police cadets at the Bu-mimoro Naval Academy here on Tuesday.

With the development of tech-nology in the field of defense and the handling of crime, the head of state said the police and military cadets were required to carry out their tasks by adjust-ing themselves to technological development.

“We need military personnel who are ready to operate the

modern weaponry system that the state has had and will have,” the president said.

For the police personnel, the head of state said they should be able to address traditional crime by using the existing technologi-cal means.

JAKARTA - Indonesian vil-lagers have beaten a Sumatran orangutan to death, an animal protection group said Tuesday, the latest case of one of the critically-endangered primates being killed by humans.

The adult female died Thursday after being rescued from a village in Aceh province with numerous injuries by the Sumatran Orang-utan Conservation Programme.

Group director Ian Singleton said the primate was found with swelling to its head and body, a serious eye injury and bleeding under the skin around its jaw.

“The only way you would ever

gain control of a wild adult orang-utan is to beat and club it until it is barely conscious, or dead,” he told AFP.

He said it was not clear why the animal was killed.

In some cases, people kill fe-male orangutans when the apes are trying to stop their offspring being taken away to be sold as pets, he said, although in this case no baby was found.

Orangutans have also been attacked by workers on palm oil and paper plan-tations on their native Sumatra island who view them as pests.

Orangutans being killed by humans was “still a very com-mon occurrence in Indonesia”, he said.

Amon Zamora, the head of Aceh’s conservation agency, said the authorities were investigating the case and it would take some time.

“Capturing orangutans for sale or as pets and harming them is certainly against the law,” he told AFP.

Only around 7,300 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild, according to protection group the International Union for Conserva-tion of Nature.

Orangutans are faced with extinction from poaching and the rapid destruction of their forest habitat, driven largely by land clearance for palm oil and paper plantations.

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif heads to China this week on his first foreign tour, eyeing high-impact Chinese infrastructure projects as an answer to economic malaise and an energy crisis.

Weak growth, inflation, dwindling foreign exchange reserves and power cuts of up to 20 hours a day ruining industry are some of the biggest problems that Sharif faces as head of government.

He made fixing Pakistan’s woeful economy and energy crisis the mantra of his election campaign and since winning a comfortable majority in May, has sought to strengthen economic ties with Bei-jing, arguably Islamabad’s closest ally.

During his July 4-8 visit, Sharif is due to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang, financial and corporate leaders, and visit major industrial centres and special economic zones.

Before even being sworn into office, Sharif hosted Li as the first foreign head of government to visit since his election victory.

In June, Sharif asked state-owned China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) to install so-lar power plants, look into mining and explore iron ore, and he discussed the building of underground train networks in Pakistan’s largest cities.

Sharif said Saturday that plans to build a trade corridor from the Chinese border to the Arabian Sea would be a “game changer” that would bring development and prosperity to three billion people.

“Pakistan has to come out of its difficulties and we want to cooperate with each other on... infrastructure and in the field of energy,” Sharif added.

Chinese investment is popular in Pakistan where Sharif, himself one of the richest busi-nessmen in the country, won plaudits for pulling off high-impact infrastructure projects such as a high-speed motorway during his two previous tenures in office.

“A trade corridor really could be transforma-tive in parts of our ailing economy and it is here that the technocrats and business acumen of the new government are going to be shaping future foreign policy for Pakistan,” wrote newspaper The News on Monday.

China-Pakistan trade last year reached $12 billion and is targeted to rise to $15 billion in the next two to three years.

During his visit to Islamabad, Li said Bei-jing was ready to speed up work to upgrade the Karakoram Highway, a vital link to any future economic corridor into Pakistan from the Chinese border. China this year acquired Pakistan’s Gwa-dar port, which through an expanded Karakoram Highway could connect it to the Arabian Sea and Strait of Hormuz, a gateway for a third of the world’s traded oil.

European sources said anger over the alleged bugging of EU offices was genuine and warned the scandal could escalate into a “serious” political crisis

The crisis comes as Washington and the EU are set to begin sensitive talks next week on the biggest free trade deal ever negotiated.

US Secretary of State John Kerry’s insistence Monday that information-gathering was “not unusual” did little to stem increasing European fury.

Hollande called on Washington to im-mediately put an end to spying on EU diplomatic missions.

His was the first direct response by a European head of the state to the scan-dal.

Hollande said Paris had demanded answers from Washington about reports that the US National Security Agency (NSA) bugged European offices and embassies.

“We cannot accept this kind of behav-iour between partners and allies,” he told journalists during a visit to the western city of Lorient.

“We ask that this immediately stop,” he added.

“There can be no negotiations or trans-

actions in all areas until we have obtained these guarantees, for France but also for all of the European Union.”

Earlier, Kerry told reporters at a security forum in Brunei that he was looking into the allegations, but he also suggested that the spying was business as usual.

In fresh revelations attributed to fugi-tive leaker Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor now holed up at Moscow airport, Monday’s Guardian newspaper said France, Italy and Greece were among 38 “targets” of spying operations by US intelligence services.

This followed Sunday’s report in Ger-man weekly Der Spiegel detailing alleged covert surveillance by the NSA on EU diplomatic missions in Washington; their mission to the United Nations in New York; even in the 28-member bloc’s Brussels headquarters.

The Islamist leader described as po-tentially confusing Monday’s 48-hour deadline set by the head of the armed forces for him to agree on a common platform with liberal rivals who have drawn millions into the streets de-manding Mursi’s resignation.

Members of his Muslim Broth-erhood have used the word “coup” to describe the military maneuver, which carries the threat of the gen-erals imposing their own road map for the nation.

But in a statement issued at nearly 2 a.m., fully nine hours after General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi delighted Mursi’s opponents by ef-fectively ordering the president to heed the demands of demonstrators, the president’s office used consider-ably less direct language to indicate he would try to take little notice.

“The president of the republic was not consulted about the statement issued by the armed forces,” it said. “The presidency sees that some of the

statements in it carry meanings that could cause confusion in the complex national environment.”

Official video was released showing Mursi meeting the uni-formed Sisi. Their body language seemed awkward, although it was unclear when it was shot.

The statement from Mursi’s office continued, “The presidency confirms that it is going forward on its previ-ously plotted path to promote com-prehensive national reconciliation ... regardless of any statements that deepen divisions between citizens.”

Describing civilian rule as a great gain from the revolution of 2011, Egypt’s first freely elected leader, in office for just a year, said he would not let the clock be turned back.

BEIJING, China - Mothers and fathers aren’t the only ones urging adult children to visit their par-ents. China’s lawbooks are now issuing the same imperative.

New wording in the law requir-ing people to visit or keep in touch with their elderly parents or risk being sued came into force Mon-day, as China faces increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population.

The amended law does little to change the status quo, however, because elderly parents in China already have been suing their adult children for emotional support and the new wording does not specify how often people must visit or clarify penalties for those who do not.

It is primarily aimed at raising awareness of the issue, said one of the drafters, Xiao Jinming, a law professor at Shandong University. “It is mainly to stress the right of elderly people to ask for emotional support ... we want to emphasize there is such a need,” he said.

Cleaning lady Wang Yi, 57, who lives alone in Shanghai, said the new law is “better than noth-ing.” Her two sons work several

hundred kilometres (miles) away in southern Guangdong province and she sees them only at an an-nual family reunion.

“It is too little, for sure, I think twice a year would be good,” she said. “We Chinese people raise children to take care of us when we are old.”

China’s legislature amended the law in December following frequent reports of elderly parents neglected by their children. It says offspring of parents older than 60 should see that their daily, finan-cial and spiritual needs are met.

Although respect for the el-derly is deeply engrained in Chinese society, three decades of market reforms have accelerated the breakup of China’s traditional extended family, and there are few affordable alternatives, such as retirement homes.

Xiao said even before the Law of Protection of Rights and Inter-ests of the Aged was amended, there were several cases of elderly parents suing their children for emotional support. Court officials generally settle such cases by working out an arrangement for sons or daughters to agree to visit more frequently. Typically, no money is involved.

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — In a heart-breaking sight, a long line of vans from a coroner’s office carried the bodies of 19 elite firefighters out of the tiny mountain town of Yarnell on Monday, as the wind-driven wildfire that claimed the men’s lives burned out of control. About 200 more firefighters arrived to the scorching mountains, doubling the number of

firefighters battling the blaze, ignited by lightning. Many of them were wildfire specialists like the 19 fatally trapped Sunday — a group of fire-fighters known as Hotshots called to face the nation’s fiercest wildfires.

With no way out, the Prescott-based crew did what they were trained to do: They unfurled their foil-lined, heat-resistant tarps and rushed to cov-er themselves. But that last, desperate line of defense couldn’t save them.

The deaths of the Granite Mountain Hotshots marked the nation’s biggest loss of firefighters in a wildfire in 80 years. Only one member of the 20-person crew survived, and that was because he was moving the unit’s truck at the time.

Arizona’s governor called it “as dark a day as I can remember” and ordered flags flown at half-staff.

“I know that it is unbearable for many of you, but it also is unbear-

able for me. I know the pain that everyone is trying to overcome and deal with today,” said Gov. Jan Brewer, her voice catching several times as she addressed reporters and residents at Prescott High School in the town of 40,000.

President Barack Obama called Brewer on Monday from Africa and reinforced his commitment to pro-viding necessary federal support to battle the fire that spread to 13 square

miles after destroying 50 homes. More than 200 homes were threat-ened in the town of 700 people.

Obama also offered his adminis-tration’s help to state officials inves-tigating the tragedy, and predicted it will force government leaders to answer broader questions about how they handle increasingly destructive and deadly wildfires. Brewer said the blaze “exploded into a firestorm” that overran the crew.

SYDNEY - Australian re-searchers said Tuesday they were closing in on a potential vaccine against malaria, with a study showing their treatment had protected mice against sev-eral strains of the disease.

Michael Good, from Queen-sland’s Griffith University, said the vaccine led to naturally existing white blood cells, or T-cells, attacking the potentially deadly malaria parasite which lives in red blood cells.

“A single vaccination induced profound immunity to different malaria parasite species,” the study, published Tuesday in the Journal of Clinical Investiga-tion, states.

Good said the team’s research was focused on inducing the white blood cells to attack the parasite, whatever the malaria strain.

“The T-cells (white blood cells), when they’re induced to kill malaria, can recognise proteins throughout the parasite, even in-ternal proteins in the parasite,” he told the ABC.

“So that’s where we think the novel aspect is: we’ve been able to induce a form of immune response which can recognise molecules in the parasite which are present in every single strain.”

Good said he believed it was the first time that a vaccine had been shown to protect against more that two strains of malaria in mice.

The vaccine was expected to be cheap and easy to manufacture, he added, meaning that -- if applicable to humans -- it could have a sig-nificant impact in poor countries where malaria kills thousands each year.

“But we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves; we want to demon-strate, first and foremost, that the vaccine is effective in humans,” Good told the broadcaster.

In 2010 an estimated 219 mil-lion people were infected with the disease and some 660,000 died, most of them African children aged under five, the UN’s World Health Organisation said in December.

A study published in the Lancet in February 2012 said the global death toll was more likely to be around 1.2 million a year.

The medical aid group said at an international AIDS meeting here that prices of older drugs long used to treat patients have fallen sharply as India and other countries make generics. But newer drugs that are more effective against the AIDS virus are too expensive, costing up to 15 times more.

“It’s good news that the price of key HIV drugs continues to fall as more generic companies compete for the market, but the newer medicines are still priced far too high,” said Jennifer Cohn, medical director for Doctors Without Borders’ access campaign. “We need the newer treat-ments for people that have exhausted all other options, but patents keep them priced beyond reach.”

Patients can be treated with a combination of three or four older drugs, but those who develop resis-

tance to them need the expensive newer medicines.

According to Doctors Without Borders, the governments of Thai-land and Jamaica pay $4,760 and $6,570, respectively, a year per patient for the new drug darunavir alone. Paraguay pays $7,782 for etravirine, while Armenia pays $13,213 for raltegravir. In compari-son, a cocktail of older generic drugs costs as little as $139 per person a year.

Doctors Without Borders urged the United States and 11 other countries negotiating a Trans-Pacific Partnership not to sign the free-trade pact. It warned that the pact will increase intellectual property rights across Asia and the Americas, expanding monopoly protection for medicines and threatening cheap access to drugs.

It said the World Health Organi-zation’s new guidelines, which rec-ommend earlier treatment for adults, means that an additional 9 million people in developing countries will now be eligible for treatment. At the moment, only about 60 percent of those who need the drugs are get-ting them.

“Scaling up HIV treatment and sustaining people on treatment for life will depend on bringing the price of newer drugs down,” said Arax Bozadijan, an HIV pharmacist for Doctors Without Borders.

The Trans-Pacific pact countries account for nearly 40 percent of global GDP and about a third of world trade, and any agreement could significantly impact prices. President Barack Obama’s adminis-tration has said it hopes to wrap up talks by the end of the year.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEFORE Lady Gaga, Rihanna or Katy Perry married music with fashion, there was Kylie Minogue.

The singer compiled a look at her fashion choices, particularly her stage costumes, in a new book called “Kylie Fashion” (Running Press).

“It was lots of fun to look at my life in fashion through the years,” said Minogue in a recent interview. “There’ve been ups and downs and fabulous moments and not so fabu-lous moments, but basically the book was a celebration of 25 years.”

Yes, the 45-year-old even admits to some fashion faux pas.

“I had to include some moments that were less than stellar because we all make mistakes along the way. Some ideas that we thought were fantastic at that point in time were upon reflection, a big mistake,” she said. “That’s all part of my journey and actually it’s what I like about fashion.”

From skimpy outfits to showgirl costumes with plume headdresses, Minogue is game to try it all. For performances, she looks for show-stoppers that will look good from the back of a large venue and hold

up through 100 shows.“I was about to say, ‘things you can

move in...’ wait a second, about half my costumes you can’t move in,” she said with a laugh.

She learned that lesson the hard way decked out in headdresses, feathers and corsets on her Showgirl: The Greatest

Hits Tour in 2005.“That’s why showgirls have to have

poise because you can’t actually tip your head,” she recalled.

Minogue says there have been times when she got costumes so late that she’s jumped in to help stitch them up backstage. Then there’s the “quick

change” in and out of elaborate cos-tumes — something she compares to a Formula One pit stop, with four people helping her.

“A lot of stuff goes down in the quick change. It depends if the show is going well or not going well what type of vocabulary I choose,” she said with a laugh.

Minogue says there’s no time to be bashful when hurrying to change clothes, joking, “you kind of pass first base.”

When she’s away from the stage and at home, Minogue insists she “can go to total frumpsville for sure.”

Besides her book, Minogue is also back in the music studio. She recently signed with Roc Nation and says she’s working with some great producers who she said were on her “wish list.”

Less than a month ago, it seemed as if the two stars didn’t even know each other! Or maybe they are just really good actors.

Backstage at Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards in L.A. on June 8, both Cavill, 30, and Cuoco, 27, were in the green room, although witnesses say the two didn’t interact. Cuoco held court in a corner with a few girlfriends while Cav-ill was on the opposite end of the room with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his “Man of Steel” co-star Amy Adams.

Cavill most dated “Fast & Furious 6” star Gina Carano. The two began seeing each other in fall 2012, although they kept their relationship out of the limelight.
