Unfortunately the recommendation was wrongly assumed by Governor Bali as a green light from DPRD Bali to do reclama-tion at Benoa Bay for investment purpose.

Amlapura (Bali Post)-After three days of heavy rain since

Saturday (6/7), a number of local houses, shrines collapsed and caught by land-slides. Meanwhile a number of roads in Selat, Sidemen and Rendang got covered by landslides. Karangasem Regional Disaster Management Board Secretary, Ketut Prama Budata, ST, last Tuesday (9/7) explained that landslides have been happening a lot yet it is still unknown how many damages were caused. “We still focus in opening the roads from landslides remains so traffic can go smoothly again. We just completed the one in Iseh which started in the morning and by 2 pm traffic route managed to be normal again. Hope-fully there will be no more landslides as there has been no reports again,” Budata stated.

The landslide in Iseh reached as far

as 20 meters and height 7 meters. Wayan Eka from Selat stated the rain almost did not stop the past three days. There hasn’t been any casualties or wounded reported so far. In Pesangkan, on a street in between hills and gorge, a house got its house dragged along with its shrine covered by landslides. The owner was asked to evacuate in the moment as the gorge condition is dangerous. Meanwhile in Banjar Tengah Amerta Buana Village, Selat, it was reported that the building and srhines owned by Ketut Kancrung (75) was destroyed due to landslides. In Bunteh, Sukawana, a kitchen owned by Wayan Dateng was destroyed by land-slides while Ni Luh Darmiati also had the same incident with her bathroom. Roads in Sangkan Gunung, Sidemen and Nongan in Rendang also Muncan, Selat also covered by landslides. (013)

A number of local people know-ing about the matter cannot do much because it will directly have a social impact. Some residents caring for the environment admit to feel increasingly apprehensive because the impact is getting sig-nificant. The most severe abrasion occurs along Yehembang Beach. Even, the coastal levee established with the budget reaching billions of rupiahs starts to be porous and even collapses along some 10 meters.

A number of perpetrators, ac-cording to residents, were uncom-fortable to be accused of being the trigger of such abrasion. Even, they dared to openly excavate although having problem with lo-cal people. The perpetrators also assessed there was no abrasion or

broken safeguarding levee. Some residents getting the information on Tuesday (Jul 9) claimed to be frustrated with such an action because the perpetrator stayed to quarry the beach sand freely at Yehembang.

Actually, the rules had clearly forbidden the beach sand excava-tion especially for commercial purposes. From information of local people, the excavation con-tinued to be performed every night. Pickup and trucks usually came down and dug on the beach at night. One of the residents, Wayan Jana, deplored the lack of measures to stop the harmful ac-tion to the environment. Without decisive action from the author-ity, the perpetrators would dig the

beach sand freely.Even, according to the resi-

dent, the perpetrator was getting arrogant and considered to have been protected by a strong patron. Their action was never touched. If there was a disciplining opera-tion, the information would leak so that it stopped the action before the officers arrived. “Residents are actually very frustrated. Thus, we do hope the authorities can take action against the perpetrator consistently,” he explained.

On the other hand, the headman of Yehembang, I Made Semadi, said that his party would summon the alleged perpetrator to be given a coaching because it had some-thing to do with the security aspect of his region. (kmb26)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Kidney failure case in Bali indi-

cates an increase. It is discernible from the dialysis service at Sanglah Hospital continuing to get additional new patients. Based on the data at Sanglah Hospital, the number of patient requiring regular dialysis reaches the average of 80 people per day.

Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospi-tal, Kadek Nariyantha, when met on Tuesday (Jul 9) explained the dialysis service at Sanglah Hospital was open every day until 12:00 p.m. With the existing 47 units of dialysis machine, the dialysis service that could be handled maximally 90 times each day. “Every machine can perform dialysis twice. So, it can maximally handle 90 times every day,” said Nariyantha. Aside from the 80 regular dialysis patients, there were also emergency patients requiring such an action.

The increase in dialysis patients could be seen from the waiting lists of regular dialysis patient at Sanglah Hospital. “There are 14 patients in waiting list requiring the regular di-alysis. Due to the capacity has been maximal, so far the regular dialysis patients cannot be added,” said Na-riyantha.

According to a consultant physi-cian from Bali Med Hospital, Wayan Sudhana, kidney failure was a condi-tion where the kidneys failed to run

its function. Patients with kidney failure would require dialysis service if their kidney’s function only reached 15 percent. Such condition meant the kidneys were unable to filter the toxins produced by the body and they remained in the blood. If the blood was dirty and not purified, the pa-tient would experience shortness and complications in some organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys and even the heart itself and could cause the patient to die. “Dialysis functions to purify the toxins that cannot be purified by kidneys,” said Sudhana.

Another measure that could be taken for patients with kidney fail-ure aside from dialysis was kidney transplant. In Bali, the kidney trans-plant could not be performed so that patients with kidney failure should undergo dialysis for the rest of their life. “Duration of the dialysis that should be taken by patients highly depends on their endurance,” said Sudhana.

Kidney failure disease was more likely to happen to people suffering from hypertension, diabetes melli-tus, bladder stones and urinary tract infection. Increasing cases of these diseases in the community had an impact on the increasing cases of kidney failure.

Increase in the disease like hyper-tension and diabetes was caused by unhealthy lifestyles. (kmb24)

Beach sand theft on the coastal areas of Yehembang is increasingly prevalent lately. Such an action proliferates again because of the lack of decisive action from relevant authorities. The authorities seem to blindfold though having taken action repeatedly, yet such an action remains to emerge.

DENPASAR - Nature tourist attraction at Kertalangu Cultural village having been opened since 2007 begins to reap a complaint. Particularly it related to the commitment of cooperation with local farmers becoming the landowners of the jogging track. Currently, the management of Kertalangu Cultural Village seems to ignore the landowners in the region so that it kindled charges to users of the jogging track.

Information obtained in the field on Tuesday (Jul 9) mentioned the jogging track users in the region had to pay in order to be able to walk on the path. The charge was imposed because the jogging track occurred on private land. In addition, the shared contract agreement of the land by the management of Kertalangu Cultural Village was no longer extended. Amount of the charge varied widely. Some visitors claimed to have been charged at IDR 2,000 by an individual at the area. “We have been asked for IDR 200,000 when we were having promenade with family,” said one of the jogging track users.

Director of the Kertalangu Cultural Village was not in the office when asked for confirmation about the complaint. According to the HRD Assistant of the Kertalangu Cultural Village, AA Mas Muliati, her boss was having a religious ceremony at his residence. Related to the complaint, Mas Muliati did not dare to give comment. “We will convey this to the leadership,” she said.

Meanwhile, the former headman of Kesiman Kertalangu, I Wayan Warka, admitted to have heard about the problem in the area. Even, his party had made coordination with village apparatus to resolve the problem at Kertalangu cultural village. “We’ve heard about this prob-lem and will promptly send a letter to the management,” he said.

Warka serving as a legislator in the Denpasar House said the prob-lem would be immediately resolved and found out the best solution. His party did not want the problem in the region to drag on because it would have an impact on the visitors and local village. On that account, a meeting would be soon organized in the near future with farmers owning the land. At least, there were seven farmers whose land was utilized for the jogging track.

The dispute had also been revealed by a legislator of the Denpasar House, I Kadek Ari Sucita. In a meeting with a number of regional working units (SKPD) in Denpasar Municipality, Ari Sucita had questioned about its contribution to the Denpasar Municipality. Moreover, the area transformed into the Kertalangu Cultural Village was formerly included into the region with zero percent of building coverage ratio (KDB) or urban green open space. (kmb12)

“In the sub-round II (May-August), the rice production will probably decrease by 1.25 per-cent and similar condition con-tinues to sub-round III,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali, Gde Suarsa.

Further, he said the rice pro-duction forecast in sub-round II and III of 2013 purely sourced from the existing series and models. According to him, there had been no correction due to the other factors such as weather condition, natural disaster, pest, farmer’s behavior or govern-ment program. “If Bali govern-ment does not make any break-throughs, the rice production in 2013 will decrease by 2,927 tons of dry unhusked rice (down 0.34 percent),” he explained.

Nevertheless, Gde Suarsa added that such condition was different from sub-round I (Jan-uary-April) 2013 where the rice production was recorded to in-crease by 2.49 percent (up 7,126 tons of dry unhusked rice) when compared to the same sub-round in 2012. “Such increase happened due to an increase in planting in January coming to 2,059 hect-ares. The planting area in Janu-ary 2012 totally reached 19,669 hectares, while the planting area in January 2013 reached 21,728 hectares. In other words, there was an increase in the planting in January reaching 2,059 hect-ares (up 10.47 percent) of paddy plants resulting in an increase in the rice harvested area of 1,059 hectares (up 2.14 percent)

in the sub-round I of 2013,” he explained.

Seeing the condition, the agri-cultural expert, Prof. Wayan Win-dia, argued despite the agricul-tural sector, including the subak, had got the attention from local government, the condition stayed to be considered less maximal. The existing assistance turned less focused and was likely to threaten the supply of basic needs. “The decline in the rice production oc-curred due to a continued decline in the irrigation systems in the downstream sector. The Bali-nese traditional irrigation system known as subak remains to face destruction in the downstream sector so that the production of rice fields continues to decline,” he said. (kmb28)

Worryingly, rice production in Bali continues to declineBali Post

DENPASAR - Behind the increasing growth of tourism sector in Bali, condition of the ag-ricultural sector is even more alarming. Indeed, this tourism supporting sector is estimated to persistently decline. As predicted, the poor management, lack of interest among the young genera-tion to do farming and diverse challenges faced such as the high conversion of land function will cause the rice production in Bali harvested in August to experience a decline. Even, the decline will even continue in the next period namely the sub-round III (September-December) where the rice production will still decline by 2.14 percent compared to the same period in 2012.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Customary village apparatus, community leaders and residents of Tanjung Benoa customary village held a meeting on Monday night (Jul 8). At the meeting, the residents persisted on their original expecta-tion where the Pudut Island should be restored to original condition for the environmental preservation. Interestingly, they also claimed open to investment of the Benoa Bay development.

“We hope the Pudut Island is restored. We’re open to the devel-opment of Benoa Bay made by any parties authorized by the govern-ment, provided that it can give added values and the safety of our environ-ment, especially Tanjung Benoa, is guaranteed. I think our society and we as the society will agree,” said the Tanjung Benoa customary village chief. The consideration was based on the economic and infrastructural needs of the com-munity. With the area development, he hoped the empowerment of local communities would increase.

Although being open to invest-ment, Wana Putra gave a number of requirements. The development of Benoa Bay, he said, should be based on in-depth study, especially regarding the environmental protec-tion and public safety. Besides, the development should be based on the Tri Hita Karana (spiritual, social and environmental harmony) concept. Before the requirements could be complied, his party could not decide anything. “We want a guarantee that the new island will not cause Tan-jung Benoa to be eroded,” he said.

The statement is quite interesting. In fact, the investment opportunity at the Benoa Bay was positively responded by residents. Moreover, there was a lure of the investors to customary village amidst the is-sue. When asked about this matter, Wana Putra immediately denied it. According to him, no lures were promised to him regarding the rec-lamation plan at Benoa Bay.

On the other hand, the informa-tion regarding the issuance of the Decree of the Governor of Bali, Mangku Pastika, about the Permit on the Utilization, Development and Management of Benoa Bay Waters provoked strong reaction from the legislator of Badung House, I Nyoman Giri Prasta. He asserted the permit issuance indicated the lack of transparency of Bali government especially the governor in making the policy. He also accused there was a hidden motive behind the lack of openness of Bali government related to the development plan at Benoa Bay.

“Provincial government, chiefly

the governor, should be open. Do not cover up any issues related to the fate of Bali. Moreover, the develop-ment of Benoa Bay has a very broad impact on the environment and society of Bali and Badung County in particular,” he said, when met at his office on Monday (Jul 8).

Giri Prasta confirmed that so far his party had not got any explanation directly from the parties concerned, especially the Bali government, regarding the reclamation plan and the development of Benoa Bay. He himself admitted to get the informa-tion from news in the mass media. As a matter of fact, the reclamation plan and development of Benoa Bay should also be communicated to county government.

Components of Badung society, especially the Badung House, had the right to know about the exis-tence of such a plan. If the plan would later on have a broad impact on society, the people’s representa-tives of Badung would also bear the impact. “Badung must know about the program in its own region. Nec-essarily, it should involve the public components of Badung. It’s called a transparent program and not covered up. Yet, should there be any impacts of the project, ultimately we are in Badung County will be requested for the accountability,” he asserted.

Giri Prasta himself claimed to worry the reclamation would result in an increasingly more serious damage to the environment. It was feared that some points of the island would sink due to the large-scale reclamation.

He also revealed about the sand dredging plan on Sawangan Beach for the reclamation of Benoa Bay. He firmly said it might not happen again because the effects were only detrimental to the environment and society. “It may not happen. Please do not perform any reclamation by taking materials from other areas. When using mud sediment of river estuary, it does not matter. Taking backfill materials from the other beach will have an impact on the beach itself such as on the ocean currents,” he said.

Meanwhile, another legislator of the Badung House, Wayan Puspa Negara, said the reclamation should forward the concept of conservation and protection against the environ-ment and its ecosystem. Moreover, there was a mangrove Grand Forest Park (Tahura) in the area. The rec-lamation should be able to provide an opportunity for the surrounding communities mostly consisting of fishermen. Puspa confirmed his party would not want if the utiliza-tion would be aggressive and even harmed the environment and society at large. (kmb25)

Based on observation in the Negara Market, Tuesday (Jul 9), the price of spices rose as well. Cayenne pepper and onion showed the most significant increase. Previously, onion was sold for IDR 28,000 per kg and then increased to IDR 36,000-40,000 per kg. Meanwhile, cayenne pepper raised IDR 10,000 per kg. A number of traders in the market claimed to follow the price of distributor from Java. “When the

fuel price increased, the price has risen and now rises again. We just follow the price of the market,” said Suryanti, 38, one of the traders.

Likewise, the price of chicken meat also increased 25-30 percent from the price on normal days. Broiler, for instance, also under-went a price hike from IDR 26,000 to IDR 30,000 per kg. While the price of kampong chicken gradually increased from IDR 50,000 to IDR

70,000. The price hike happened due to increasing demand, espe-cially before the Eid.

However, the price increase did not apply to beef which was relatively stable since the fuel price hike last month. The buyers found around the market claimed to be rather objected to the successive price increases.

However, since the price applied evenly, the buyers had no other choice. “We also need. If the price actually increases, it must not be too much because we previously have faced the fuel price hike, not to mention the new school year,” said Emi, a housewife from Negara. She hoped the prices could turn stable, especially before the holiday. (kmb26)

Three fake money distributors of IDR 50,000 involving Gusti Made Oka, Sukardi Anto and Haji Djamaludin got convicted 2 years jail by judge panel led by Erly Sulistyarini in Denpasar District Court last Tuesday (9/7). Erly agreed to public prosecu-tors, I Gusti Nyoman Widana and Eddy Artha Wijaya, conviction that stated that the three accused have had and distributed the fake money and as stated by Criminal

Code section 245. The conviction was received well by accused and their legal counselors.

The crime started when I Gusti Made Oka told Sukardi Anto that he is in need of money to. Know-ing that, Oka was then offered by Anto to use the fake money for shopping to get original cash. Oka was interested in the accu-mulation of 3:1 (three fake IDR 50,000 cash can be exchanged with original IDR 50,000 cash). Sukardi ordered IDR 5 million of fake money from Haji Dja-

maluddin for Oka yet only IDR 4 million can be given. Yet when the fake money was about to be used by Oka in a Tohpati Petrol Station, East Denpasar, the worker was suspicious of the cash and required Oka’s wallet. Inside it 18 tender of 50,000 were found. Oka was then reported to the East Denpasar Police and then jailed. Without hesitation, Oka told the whole story which then Sukardi was captured at Merdeka Street Gang III East Denpasar on Thurs-day 7th February 2013. (kmb17)

DENPASAR – Importers from Singapore and Hong Kong are biggest buyers of jewelry that made by Balinese craftsmen. Buy-

ers from Singapore and Hong Kong will sell again the jewelry that they order in their home countries. Both countries are an interna-

The importers from Hong Kong and Singapore, according to Wijaya, are the biggest importers that buy jewelries from Balinese.

On the third place is United States, said Wijaya who often join exhibitions in other countries. The non-oil export statistic that pro-

“We use environmentally-friendly method in constructing this toll road to reduce environ-mental damage of the waters around Benoa Bay,” local toll

road management company PT Jasamarga President Director Akhmad Tito Karim said here on Wednesday.

He said the freeway to link

Benoa-Ngurah Rai-Nusa Dua would cross the bay of Benoa.

Therefore, he explained that the pillars and the floors of the toll road would be made in the factory before being implanted or placed in the sea.

“If the floors and pillars are directly made in the sea, it will pollute the waters,” he said, adding that the pile of soil for the Rp2.4

trillion worth of the toll road would also be taken into account in order not to destroy the mangrove forest around the bay.

Akhmad noted that since the start of the toll road construction in December 2011, PT Jasamarga has planted around 15,000 mangrove seedlings along the coast of Benoa Bay as part of mangrove preserva-tion effort.

He said Public Works Ministry and Transportation Ministry were scheduled to make feasibility study on July 25, 2013 about the operation of the freeway.

“After the feasibility study is over, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will inaugurate the road on August 14 in conjunction with the anniversary of Bali provincial government,” he said.

A leading Brazilian newspa-per reported on Tuesday that the U.S. National Security Agency targeted most Latin American countries with spying programs that monitored Internet traffic, especially in Colombia, Venezu-ela, Brazil and Mexico.

Citing documents leaked by Edward Snowden, the fugitive former U.S. intelligence con-tractor, O Globo newspaper said the NSA programs went beyond military affairs to what it termed “commercial secrets,” including oil and energy resources.

Regional leaders called for a tough response to the alleged espionage that O Globo said in-cluded a satellite monitoring sta-tions based in Brazil’s capital. “A shiver ran down my back when I learned that they are spying on all of us,” Argentine President Cris-

tina Fernandez said in a speech on Tuesday.

She called on the Mercosur bloc of South American nations, due to meet on Friday, to issue a strong statement and demand explanations from Washington. “More than revelations, these are confirmations of what we thought was happening,” she said.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, who has emerged as a close U.S. ally, said the reported spying was worrisome.

“We are against these kinds of espionage activities,” he said in a televised interview. “It would be good for (Peru’s) Congress to look with concern at privacy issues related to personal infor-mation.”

Brazil’s government said it set up a task force of its defense, com-munications, justice and foreign

affairs ministries to investigate the alleged espionage and establish whether the privacy of Brazilian citizens had been violated.

The Brazilian Senate’s foreign relations committee has asked U.S. ambassador Thomas Shan-non to testify on the allegations. It is unclear whether Shannon, who is not obliged to testify, will do so.

Gilberto Carvalho, a top aide to President Dilma Rousseff, said a “very hard” response to the United States was needed. “If we lower our heads, they will trample all over us tomorrow,” he said.

The espionage allegations surfaced one week after South American nations were outraged by the diversion of Bolivian President Evo Morales’ plane in Europe because of the suspicion that Snowden was on board.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The pilots of Asiana Flight 214 relied on automated cockpit equipment to control the jetliner’s speed as they landed at San Francisco airport, but realized too late they were flying too low and too slow before the aircraft crashed, investiga-tors said Tuesday.

The new details were not conclusive about the cause of Saturday’s crash, but they raised potential areas of focus: Was there a mistake made in setting the automatic speed control, did it malfunction or were the pilots not fully aware of what the plane was doing?

One of the most puzzling aspects of the crash has been why the wide-body Boeing 777 jet came in far too low and slow, clipping its landing gear and then its tail on a rocky seawall just short the runway. The crash killed two of the 307 people and injured scores of others, most not seriously.

Among those injured were two flight attendants in the back of the plane, who survived despite being thrown onto the runway when the plane slammed into the seawall and the tail broke off.

National Transportation Safety Board chairman Deborah Hersman said the autothrottle was set for 157 mph and the pilots assumed it was controlling the plane’s airspeed. However, the autothrottle was only “armed” or ready for activation, she said.

Hersman said the pilot at the controls, identified by Korean authori-ties as Lee Gang-guk, was only about halfway through his training on the Boeing 777 and was landing that type of aircraft at the San Fran-cisco airport for the first time ever. And the co-pilot, identified as Lee Jeong-Min, was on his first trip as a flight instructor.

In the 777, turning the autothrottle on is a two-step process — first it is armed, then it is engaged, Boeing pilots said. Hersman didn’t say whether the Asiana’s autothrottle was engaged.

Bob Coffman, an American Airlines captain who has flown 777s, said the only way he could think of for Asiana plane to slow as quickly at the NTSB has described would be if somehow the autothrottle has shifted into the idle mode.

Only moments before the crash did the training captain realize the autothrottle wasn’t controlling the plane’s speed, Hersman said.

“This is one of the two hallmarks of complexity and challenge in the industry right now,” said Doug Moss, an Airbus A320 a pilot for a major U.S. airline and an aviation safety consultant in Torrance, Calif. “It’s automation confusion because from what Deborah Hersman said, it appears very likely the pilots were confused as to what autothrottle and pitch mode the airplane was in. It’s very likely they believed the autothrottles were on when in fact they were only armed.”

Dogue de Bordeaux Police says the gang used large breeds such as dogue de Bordeaux to smuggle cocaine into Italy. An Italian judge has ordered 49 suspected Latin American gang members to stand trial for allegedly using dogs to smuggle cocaine into the country.

A vet in Mexico forced large dogs to swallow drug packages before they were flown into Milan, police say.

On arrival, they were killed and dismembered to retrieve the cocaine in a case which has outraged animal rights activists. The Ecuadorean, Peruvian and Salvadoran nationals will face trial in Italy.

The suspected gang members, between 19 and 37 years old, are thought to be part of youth drug gangs known as “pandillas”. The gangs go under the names Trebol, Neta, Latin King Luzbel and Latin King Chicago, according to the investigative judge Fabrizio D’Arcangelo.

Mr D’Arcangelo told reporters the armed gangs were involved in several crimes in and around Milan. The drug trafficking operation was first uncovered in March, when 75 suspects were arrested.

Animal rights organisations have reacted angrily at the trafficking scheme. They say many of the dogs must have died before arriving in Italy, as a small leak of cocaine would have been enough to kill them.

The 49 Latin Americans will stand trial for organised crime and court proceedings have been set for 9 October.

The Manxman tweeted: “Just seen the sprint. I believe I didn’t move line. “I’m actually coming past Veelers and we touch elbows when he moves. Anyway, hope he’s OK.” Britain’s Chris Froome remains in the overall race lead after avoiding the aftermath of the crash on an otherwise untroubled day.

“It was a bit tricky towards the end, but I always had a team-mate with me and I kept out of trouble,” Froome said.

Analysis“I’ve seen the crash several

times. Tom Veelers does move slightly off his line but when you are swinging off after having done your lead-out, that’s what you do. “Mark Cavendish, who is on the outside, had to go all the way around the outside on a left-hand bend and more or less cut across him. I don’t think he intentionally knocked him off but the replays are inconclusive.

“There will be some people who see it and say that Cavendish cut across him and caught him deliberately, while others will just say it was just one of those racing incidents. “I think the right decision in the end is to say ‘it’s a racing inci-dent, let’s get on with it’. That won’t keep everyone happy but it is very difficult to do that in cycling.

“The other talking point is how Cavendish’s team Omega Pharma-

QuickStep got their lead-out wrong. “Cav came from far too far back. His team-mate Gert Steegmans brought him up but really it was a bit too late and, by the time he got there, the sprint had started.

“Cavendish needed to be at the front when Andre Greipel and Marcel Kittel got there. I am surprised Greipel got beaten but he left an opening for Kittel to get through, and he took it.” “It’s always nervous when you come into the last 2km with a bunch sprint coming off the final bend, but I was to one side of the crash and went around it without any problems.”

Cavendish will not be punished for his part in the incident, which came in a bunch sprint at the very end of a largely flat 197km (122-mile) route that started in Saint Gil-das DesBois in north west France. An army of British fans had crossed the channel in hope of seeing Cav-endish claim his second stage win of this year’s race and 25th Tour stage win in total.

But he could not get close to his sprint rivals Greipel and Kittel, with the latter timing his attack perfectly to pip his fellow German at the line. Behind them on the home straight, Veelers slowed down and veered to his right, into Cavendish’s path, after leading out his Argos-Shimano team-mate Greipel. Cavendish barged past him and knocked the Dutchman off his bike.

Race commissaries ruled the clash was Veelers’ fault and Caven-dish denied any intent on his part, adding on Twitter: “There’s no way I’d move on a rider deliberately, especially one not contesting a sprint.”

Veelers, who was not badly hurt in the incident, said: “I had the feeling Cavendish was boxed in my wheel. He touched my handlebars and knocked me over.”

THE FIA has banned media and ‘non-essential personnel’ from Grand Prix pit lanes after a cameraman was injured at last Sunday’s German Grand Prix. A loose wheel from the

car of Red Bull’s Mark Webber struck cameraman Paul Allen, breaking his collarbone.

The ban, issued by Formula 1’s ruling body, covers “anyone other than

event marshals and team personnel”.On Monday, F1 boss Bernie Eccle-

stone said that cameramen would only be allowed to film from the pit lane wall.

Other media will also be kept out of the pit lane, with the FIA saying in a statement: “Access for approved media will be confined to the pit wall.”

Sunday’s incident occurred as Red Bull driver Webber was leaving the pits following a tyre change that had taken longer than usual.

The Australian was released with-out the right rear wheel being prop-erly secured and after it came free of the car it bounced into Allen, striking the Briton from behind.

The FIA also announced that it will seek an immediate change to regulations so that all team personnel working on cars during pit stops wear head protection, and that the speed limit in the pits is reduced from 100 kmh to 80 kmh.

JORGE Lorenzo has warned that his Assen heroics are no guarantee of a similarly strong showing in this weekend’s Sachsenring MotoGP race. The world champion finished fifth in the Dutch TT despite breaking his collarbone in practice.

Lorenzo missed qualifying to fly to Spain for surgery on the injury, then returned to take a shock result that kept him within nine points of championship leader Dani Pedrosa.

But Yamaha rider Lorenzo says this weekend’s German Grand Prix is still going to be a major physical challenge. “Sachsenring is going to be a little tough for me after the crash at Assen,” he said.

“It is true in Holland we achieved a stunning result for me, the team and also the championship but I have to be realistic and I have still a long way to go for my collarbone to recover.

“I made a huge effort to race at Assen and finally I could manage a really difficult weekend getting an astonishing fifth position. The situation is still that I need more time to fix the injury though.

“I won’t be at 100 per cent in Germany but I’m pretty confi-dent I can make a good weekend. At least I have had almost 10 days to stay calm and improve a bit my physical condition.

“It will be difficult to compete another time but for sure I will push even harder than in Holland.”

Landon Donovan added a goal and two assists, becoming the first player with at least 50 career goals and 50 assists for the national team. Costa Rica defeated Cuba 3-0 in an earlier match at the same venue.

Wondolowski is the third Amer-ican to score three goals in a Gold Cup match, joining Donovan and Brian McBride. The United States has won four Gold Cups since the tournament’s inception in 1991. Mexico has won the past two. The 12-team tournament includes na-tional teams from North and Cen-tral America and the Caribbean and is played every two years.

The U.S. men were coming off a 6-0 rout of Guatemala in a friendly warmup match on Friday, when Donovan scored twice to extend his American record to 51 international goals. That was Donovan’s first

match following a five-month break from the national team, after he was left out of the squads for the June World Cup qualifying matches.

Wondolowski, who scored his first international goal against Guatemala, struck early against Belize when he knocked in a rebound from goalkeeper Shane Orio in the 12th minute. He scored again in the 36th and 40th min-utes, either side of Ian Gaynair’s header past U.S. goalkeeper Nick Rimando that gave Belize its first goal in the tournament.

Donovan created scor ing chances for Stuart Holden in the 58th and Michael Orozco in the 72nd — taking his carrer tally to 51 assists for the national team — finished off the scoring with a penalty in the 76th.

In the earlier match, Michael Barrantes scored a pair of second-

half goals for Costa Rica. Bar-rantes broke open a scoreless match with a left-foot goal from the top of the box that beat diving Cuban goalkeeper Odelin Molina in the 51st minute.

He added another goal in the 77th minute after Jairo Arrieta’s scored in the 71st, extending Cu-ba’s winless streak to 12 straight Gold Cup matches.

“The way we managed the ball, we were able to create some opportunities and we were able to score,” Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto said.

The four Group C teams will next play Saturday in Salt Lake City, with the U.S. facing Cuba followed by Belize against Costa Rica. The winners and runners-up from each group, and the two top third-place finishers, advance to the knockout round.

MONACO — Previously linked with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea, Colombia striker Radamel Falcao is confident that he hasn’t made a mistake with his surprise move to promoted French club Monaco.

Despite expectations he would move to a major European club, Falcao joined Monaco from Atletico Madrid in an offseason deal worth an estimated 60 million euros ($78 million).

“I understand that this could have come as a surprise,” the 27-year-old said when he was presented at a news conference on Tuesday. “It’s a pity there’s no European Cup, but that’s how it is. But the aim is to win the title so that we can play in the Champions League next year.

“We have other motivations than Europe this season, we want to win all the competitions we’re in and that’s already enough. Many people may believe that this is a mistake, but I’m sure they will change their opinion once we have won titles.”

Falcao scored 52 league goals in two seasons for Atletico. He recently helped the club win the Copa del Rey, beating Real Madrid 2-1 on its crosstown rival’s home soil.

Owned by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, Monaco won the second division title last season.

Monaco’s recent spending spree has also brought in former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal, Porto pair James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho, Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho, and France midfielder Jeremy Toulalan, who joined from Malaga.

The Poland striker has one year remaining on his Dortmund contract but has made no secret of his desire to join Bayern.

His agents have been quite vocal in attempting to force the move through despite Dortmund ruling out a move this offseason. Lewandowski will be able to move for free once his contract expires next year.

BOGOTA - Paraguay’s Olimpia advanced to the final of the Liber-tadores Cup on Tuesday, losing the second leg of their semi-final 1-0 to Independiente Santa Fe but going through 2-1 on aggregate.

Striker Wilder Medina scored the only goal at El Campin sta-dium in the 75th minute but the Colombian side’s poor finishing denied them the chance to reach their first final.

Santa Fe midfielder Omar Per-ez’s free kick came back off the woodwork and Medina was on hand to score despite goalkeeper Martin Silva’s last-ditch effort to prevent the ball from crossing his line.

Olimpia, who won their third and last title in South America’s elite club tournament in 2002, were on the defensive for most of the match, going through thanks to their 2-0 first leg win in Asuncion last week.

Santa Fe came closest to level-ling the tie when Cristian Martinez Borja’s shot hit the post six min-utes from time.

LONDON - Premier League Chelsea have signed Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer until the end of next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Schwarzer, 40, has played more than 15 years in England with Bradford City, Middlesbrough and Fulham. Last season he became the first overseas player to complete 500 Premier League appear-ances.

“It’s a phenomenal club,” Schwarzer told the Chelsea website (www.chelseafc.com) on Tuesday. “It’s one of the biggest and best clubs in the world and it’s an honour to sign for Chelsea. I didn’t take much convincing to come here.”

Reuters New Everton manager Roberto Martinez

made it three straight signings of former Wigan Athletic players when he swooped for defender Antolin Alcaraz and goalkeeper Joel Robles on Tuesday.

Martinez, who left relegated Wigan at the end of last season, also bought Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone from the English FA Cup holders

on Monday.Paraguay’s free-agent defender Alcaraz, 30,

has agreed a two-year deal at Goodison Park, the Premier League club said on their website (www.evertonfc.com).

Martinez first signed Alcaraz, who missed much of last season through injury but played in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May, from Belgian side Club Bruges in 2010.

The player appeared in the 2010 World Cup

and helped his country to the final of the 2011 Copa America. The 23-year-old Robles played the second half of last season on loan at Wigan.

“The goalkeeper...will return to play in the Premier League,” said Atletico in a statement. Joel was part of the Spain squad that won the European Under-21 championship in Israel last month.

SINGAPADU - Existence of Singapadu village where the Bali Bird Park (BBP) is located has a lot of potential and unique-ness. Many interesting things can be seen by tourists such as the silversmith, carvers and even the way of life remaining to preserve the Balinese customs. It was revealed by Ngakan Made Agung, Director of Sales & Marketing of the BBP at the Launching of the BBP Cycling Package.

“Cycl ing package i s launched to give more op-tions to tourists coming to the BBP so that they cannot only look at the wildlife and conservation, but also can see the pristine village offering the overlay of magnificent rice fields as well as the environ-ment around the Singapadu village. It will be able to de-velop more potential for the Singapadu tourism village and contribute more to the public about the presence of cycling in terms of economic point of view,” added Ngakan.

As been known, other than be-ing the first conservation tourist attraction in Bali, the Bali Bird Park has a collection of the biggest and best birds. These animals do not only come from Indonesia, but

also from Africa and South America. This educational recreation area spreads across the area of 2.5 hectares with a beautiful land-scape. About 2,000 tropical plants including

50 varieties of palm trees become the collec-tion so that they can attract a lot of butterflies

and are capable of providing protection to nearly 1,000 birds of 250 different spe-cies. It is divided into areas to create a natural bird habitat, completed with plants and traditional artifacts for the authenticity, so that the habitats here will be comfortable.

The BBP currently has a collection of 1,000 birds belonging to 250 different species, nine species of bright colored parrots from South America such as the Scarlet Macaw and Toucan Hyacinth Macaw. The latter is the largest parrot in the world. Besides, there is also Flamingo posing one of the oldest birds. Based on the fossil record, the Flamingo has existed on earth since the 30-50 million years ago. The other uniqueness is the presence of Grey African Parrots that has the ability to mimic human speech

Meanwhile, the archipelagic col-lection of birds is brought in from Papua, Kalimantan, Java and Bali. The bird of Bali becoming the mascot and classified into endan-gered species is the Bali Starling (Leucopsar Rothschildi). This rare bird is bred in the Bali Bird Park as a part of the conservation pro-gram. Other than functioning as a recreation object, the BBP also serves as a place of education and learning. On that account, this location is equipped with fa-cilities of breeding, research and

veterinary medicine. Its achieve-ment rate is quite high in terms of

reproduction of birds.

AntaraJAKARTA - President Susilo

Bambang Yudhoyono has said the government would prioritize the search for Aceh earthquake victims and the management of displaced persons in the disaster emergency response.

“Searching for 6 people who remain missing and providing the best possible service to the displaced persons in makeshift tents are our priority,” President Yudhoyono said on his Twitter account @SBYud-hoyono on Wednesday.

However, the meeting led by Deputy House Speaker Pramono Anung and attended by KPK Chief Abraham Samad and members of the supervisory team was held behind closed-doors.

“Since the meeting will discuss a number of KPK’s findings it cannot be open to the general public. The supervisory team needs time to fur-ther study the findings,” Pramono said when opening the meeting.

The meeting was later held be-hind closed-doors.

KPK Chief Abraham Samad told the press prior to the meeting that the anti-graft body would convey all developments in the handling of the Century case to the meeting.

“We will convey a progress report on the handling of the Cen-tury case, including the results of a search on Bank Indonesia office,” he said.

The KPK would make an all-out effort to bring the alleged corrup-tion case related to the bailouts to Bank Century to justice this year, he said.

The commission had three times ignored a summons to attend a meeting with the team for various reasons.

Abraham said the KPK could not meet the summons because it had other agenda at the same time.

JAKARTA - Indonesian mosques must limit their use of loud-speakers to stop disrupting the lives of those who reside nearby, an official urged Wednesday at the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

The approximately 800,000 mosques in the world’s most popu-lous Muslim-majority country go into overdrive during Ramadan, noisily blasting out Koranic verses from the early hours.

But the Mosques Council, an independent body which groups many of the country’s mosques, said it had asked the places of worship to cut back on their use of loudspeakers.

“Mosques are always more noisy during Ramadan so we have asked them to limit the use of their loudspeakers,” said deputy council head Masdar Masudi.

The mosques begin their sermons earlier than usual in Ramadan, when Muslims forgo food, drink and sex between dawn and dusk, as they call people for the “sahur” breakfast that is eaten each day before fasting begins.

Masudi said it was acceptable for mosques to use loudspeakers for the short call to prayer but they should limit their use beyond that.

“A quiet atmosphere is very important so that Muslims can perform their religious duties solemnly during this holy month,” said the official, adding he hoped mosques would continue to limit their use of speakers even after Ramadan.

There have been repeated calls for mosques to turn down the volume over the years following complaints from residents, but previous efforts have met with little success.

Government prioritizes search for Aceh quake victims

In the company of First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and several cabinet ministers, the head of state visited the quake victims at Ketol sub-district in Central Aceh district on Tuesday for a dialog with them.

“We will continue to make the post disaster management for the victims,” the president said, adding that during a meeting in Jakarta a day before he left for Aceh, it was decided that the government would provide financial assistance for the quake victims and renovate the dam-aged houses.

During the visit to the quake victims, the head of state asked them to remain calm and patient in face of the disaster that may happen anytime without warning.

President Yudhoyono said he had instructed the national Search and Rescue Board, the National Defense Forces and the National Police to continue to search for other missing victims in Central Aceh district.

At least 40 people were killed after the earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale rocked the two districts on July 2.

Meanwhile, Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah earlier said that he was grateful to the central govern-ment for its quick response to the disaster.

“The Aceh government is thank-ful to the central government for its quick reaction by sending relief aid to the affected area, including the visit by a number of ministers a day after the quake struck the area. We are also thankful to the commander of the Iskandar Muda regional military command and the chief of the Aceh provincial police and their ranks and files who have helped victims,” he said.

BEIJING - China’s trade surplus fell 14.0 percent in June as imports and exports both dropped unexpectedly, data showed Wednes-day, suggesting a further slowdown in the Asian economic giant as Beijing warned of “grave challenges”.

The figures are the latest to set alarm bells ringing over the health of China’s rebound from a prolonged downtrend as trade and manufacturing conditions have worsened this year.

Exports slipped 3.1 percent to $174.32 billion, according to figures from Customs, while imports were down 0.7 percent at $147.19 billion, leaving a trade surplus of $27.13 billion.

Average expectations in a survey of 20 economists by Dow Jones Newswires had been for a 3.3 percent rise in exports and imports to go up 5.5 percent.

“Currently China’s foreign trade is fac-ing grave challenges,” Customs spokesman Zheng Yuesheng told reporters.

He said “prolonged sluggish foreign demand” was the main cause, followed by rising export prices in foreign currency terms, labour costs, and a deteriorating trade envi-ronment due to growing trade disputes.

The figures came after the International Monetary Fund on Tuesday cut its global eco-nomic growth forecast, citing new downside risks in key emerging-market economies and a deeper recession in the eurozone.

The IMF projected the world economy to expand 3.1 percent in 2013, down from its April estimate of 3.3 percent.

China and other emerging economic powers now face new risks, it warned, “in-cluding the possibility of a longer growth slowdown”.

China’s economy grew 7.8 percent in 2012, its worst performance in 13 years, on the back of slack demand for exports and weakness at home.

The first three months of this year saw expansion of just 7.7 percent, disappointing analysts who had expected growth to acceler-ate after showing strength at the end of 2012. The government has set a growth target for 2013 of 7.5 percent, the same as last year’s, as it looks to retool its economic model from exports to domestic consumption.

Beijing is due to announce gross domestic product figures for the second quarter on Monday.

The location of the signing ceremony at a university and the absence of senior officials from either side underscored New Zealand’s interest in maintaining its increasingly important ties with Beijing. Five years ago, New Zealand became the first developed nation to sign a free trade deal with China, which has since become its largest export market.

In contrast to New Zealand, the deal was widely trumpeted in Taiwan, which is eager to break out of its China-imposed diplomatic isolation. It was Taiwan’s first free trade agreement with a developed country and, from its point of view, a vic-tory that was more political than economic. Television crews were on hand to beam the signing ceremony live to Taiwan.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, and the Chinese government goes out of its way to pressure other countries to give short shrift to Taiwanese attempts to expand the democratic island’s interna-

tional profile. But it also seeks to assist the Taiwanese

government of President Ma Ying-jeou in solidifying the island’s economy as a way of promoting the interests of Ma’s China-friendly Nationalist Party among an increasingly disaffected Taiwanese electorate.

Like most Western nations, New Zealand doesn’t recognize Taiwan as an independent country. To complete the deal, New Zealand used the wording and status from the World Trade Organization, which describes Tai-wan as a “separate customs territory.”

The New Zealander who signed the deal was Stephen Payton, director of the Commerce and Industry Office which comes under the banner of the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. That meant he wasn’t technically a government official, although he had been seconded into the role from his government job.

“We have a no surprises relationship

with China,” Payton said. “So yes, they are comfortable with what we are doing.”

Payton said the gradual removal of tariffs from the beef, fruit and other products it exports to Taiwan would result in savings of 40 million New Zealand dollars ($31 million) in the first year and NZ$75 million after 12 years when all the tariffs expired.

Taiwan will also win some small eco-nomic gains when New Zealand tariffs on machine tools, steel plates and bicycles are removed under the deal.

Elliott Charng, who signed the agree-ment for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New Zealand, said the deal was a “win-win.”

In Taipei, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister David Lin shrugged off questions about the choice of venue, saying that Victoria University of Wellington was an “ideal site” for the ceremony because the university assisted in the feasibility study of the deal when talks began in 2011.

The agreement “will enhance interests on both sides,” Lin said. “The deal was signed under the WTO framework, and it had nothing to do with mainland China.”

Taiwan is also negotiating free trade deals with India and Singapore.

The 19-year-old ethnic Chechen was charged late last month with kill-ing three people by setting off home-made pressure-cooker bombs, assem-bled by him and his older brother, in a crowd of thousands of race spectators on April 15, and later shooting dead a university police officer.

That shooting, and a later gun battle with police in the suburb of Watertown, Massachusetts, led to the death of 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and a day-long lockdown

of most of the Boston area as police searched for Dzhokhar, who was found, badly wounded, hiding in a boat in a backyard. The marathon attack injured about 264 people, with many losing legs.

The biggest challenge for Tsar-naev’s attorney, public defender Miriam Conrad, will be sparing him the death penalty, one observer said.

“I suspect that Miriam will start tomorrow by trying to change his image and make him look like the

normal, average, clean-cut young kid,” said Walter Prince, a former federal prosecutor in Boston who is now a partner with the law firm Prince Lobel. He is not involved in the case.

BRIEF APPEARANCETsarnaev’s appearance at U.S.

District Court in Boston - the same building where mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is currently on trial - will likely be brief, with Con-rad perhaps entering a not guilty plea on his behalf, Prince said.

Conrad did not respond to a request for comment. According to court papers, Tsarnaev scrawled a note on an inside wall and beams of the boat in which he hid.

Reuters ISTANBUL - Turkish police

allowed thousands of protesters who have been trying to block the redevelopment of a park in Istan-bul to break their Ramadan fast on Tuesday before resuming efforts to get them to leave the area.

The previous night police fired teargas and water cannon at protesters as they tried to prevent them gathering in Gezi Park, which has become the focal point of protests against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s government.

Two leftist Muslim groups sympathetic to the protests, the Revolutionary Muslims and Anti-Capitalist Muslims, hosted fast-breaking iftar dinner in a nearby pedestrian street by the Gezi Park on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The local municipality also hosted a dinner in Taksim Square by the Gezi Park and people marched in the park afterwards. Police used loudspeakers to warn people to leave, while people booed and clapped, but the police did not intervene.

The park had been sealed off for three weeks after police expelled the residents of a protest camp there.

“I hope the state will under-stand what these people have been trying to say with the protests. It is a constitutional right to enter a public space and protest,” Ozge Dogu, a 23-year-old university student, said.

CLASHESAfter a police crackdown on

a small demonstration on May 31 against plans to redevelop Gezi Park, the protests grew into broader action against what critics see as Erdogan’s increasingly au-thoritarian style of government.

Gezi Park reopened to visitors on Monday afternoon but hours later police forced people out due to con-cerns about a planned protest rally. Clashes erupted in nearby streets before police allowed people back into the park around midnight.

The Taksim Solidarity group of political parties and non-gov-ernmental organizations opposed to the park’s redevelopment said police detained more than 80 people in Monday’s clashes.

SACRAMENTO, California — Nearly 30,000 of the 133,000 inmates in California prisons refused meals for the second day in support of inmates held in solitary confine-ment at Pelican Bay State Prison, corrections officials said Tuesday.

The meals were refused on Monday and Tuesday as inmates announced what they said would be the third extended hunger strike in

two years protesting conditions for the more than 4,500 gang members, gang associates and serious offend-ers held in the security housing units. Many of those inmates are kept in solitary confinement, some-times for decades.

The protest is the latest disrup-tion for a prison system already fac-ing legal and logistical challenges. Officials are struggling to move about 2,600 inmates from two Cen-tral Valley prisons because they are

considered especially vulnerable to a potentially fatal airborne fungus. They also are appealing a separate court order requiring the state to release nearly 10,000 inmates by year’s end to reduce prison crowd-ing as the best way to improve conditions for sick and mentally ill inmates.

The isolation units that are the focus of the hunger strike are at Pelican Bay near the Oregon bor-der and at three other maximum

security prisons around the state. Inmates refused breakfast and lunch at two-thirds of the state’s 33 prisons and at all four private prisons that hold California inmates in other states, said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She did not know how many in-mates skipped dinners.

About 2,000 inmates statewide refused to go to their jobs or classes Tuesday, down slightly from the

2,300 who refused to participate on Monday. The number of inmates re-fusing meals also dropped slightly, from more than 30,000 on Monday to about 29,000 on Tuesday.

The number of participating inmates eclipsed two hunger strikes two years ago. Nearly 12,000 in-mates missed at least some meals in October 2011, and nearly 7,000 declined meals in July 2011, though officials said most began eating again after several days.

The scientists’ new report outlines ambitious goals for a mission to Mars that NASA wants to launch in 2020.

The plan marked the first concrete step toward returning a piece of Mars to Earth, but NASA said it’s unclear how or when the cache would be retrieved.

“We’re not signing up to a timetable or a commitment for a follow-on mission,” said NASA sciences chief John Grunsfeld, adding that it’s up to future plan-ners to decide the next steps.

NASA has the ultimate say on what the future rover will ac-complish within its $1.5 billion budget, excluding the cost of the launch vehicle. The rover will be modeled after Curiosity, which captivated the world last year with its daring controlled-crash landing near the Martian equator.

Despite the successful touch-down, the $2.5 billion mission ran over budget and faced tech-nical problems during develop-

ment. To save money, engineers will dust off Curiosity’s blue-prints and reuse spare parts where possible.

The future rover would build on discoveries of past Mars mis-sions. Spirit and Opportunity, launched in 2004, uncovered plenty of geologic evidence of past water. Curiosity found a habitable environment where microbes could thrive.

Scientists want Curiosity’s successor to carry high-tech instruments that can peer at rocks on a microscopic level in search of chemical clues that might have been left behind by microbes, if they existed.

Since the Martian surface is a harsh environment with no signs of water, the panel said it didn’t make sense to look for current life.

That would be a “fool ish investment,” said Brown Uni-versity planetary geologist John Mustard, who headed the NASA-appointed team.

NEW YORK - Can’t take the heat? Fitness experts say one way for outdoor exercisers who dread the long, hot summer days of steamy runs and breathless aerobics during a heat wave is to embrace it. “It takes most healthy people 10 to 14 days to fully ac-

LOS ANGELES — The next rover to Mars should hunt for signs of ancient life and gather rocks that a future mission could bring back to Earth for the first time, a team of scientists ap-pointed by the U.S. space agency said Tuesday.

Easing into outdoor workouts on sultry summer daysclimate to exercising in the heat,” said Dr. Cedric X. Bryant, chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise. “In order to achieve that you need to be exercising in heat.”

The heat-acclimated individual will sweat sooner and that sweat will be more dilute, Bryant said. There will be a lower risk for

dehydration and a reduction in the heat gained through exercise that will help maintain a lower core temperature and heart rate response.

He said as much as 25 percent of the healthy population is esti-mated to be heat intolerant in an unacclimated state. Once they get acclimated that drops to 2 percent. A 2011 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control showed that about 6,000 people a year seek emergency treatment for heat illnesses suffered while play-ing sports or participating in other recreational activities outdoors.

While acclimating to the physi-ological demands of the heat, Bryant said, be sure to tone down your workout. “Strictly adhere to the talk test (the ability to talk as a gauge of correct exercise inten-sity),” he said. “It’s not a time to do intervals or high-intensity ex-ercises. Afterwards, when you’re fully acclimated, you can ramp up intensity.”

Connecticut-based fitness in-structor Ellen Barrett said a daily dose of hot yoga primed her for the heat wave that slammed the U.s. East Coast in June. “I did the Bikram yoga challenge every day for a month, so when that heat wave hit I didn’t even notice it,” said Bar-rett, author of the upcoming book, “The 28 Days Lighter Diet.”

She said Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer trains in Dubai. “He plays all day in the hot sun so when he’s at the U.S. Open at the end of sum-mer in New York City, he looks fresh as a daisy,” she said.

Exercise physiologist and run-ning coach Tom Holland is a vet-eran of more than 60 marathons and 21 Ironman triathlons, many held in sweltering conditions in-cluding an Ironman in Malaysia, where the temperature soared to 104 degrees (40 Celsius) and humidity to 99 percent.

“I actually love running in the brutal heat and humidity and have trained myself accordingly,” said

Holland, author of “The Marathon Man.”

When running in the heat, he recommends adjusting speed and goals and said runners should expect to run more slowly and should focus on covering the distance.

“I paced a 60-year-old client in the 2012 Boston Marathon where the race hit 90 degrees,” he said. “When I saw how hot it would be, we adjusted his race goal from 3:40 (three hours, 40 minutes) to just finishing.”

Running in heat is difficult, Holland explained, because blood has two conflicting interests - supplying working muscles and going to the skin to cool the body down.

“So there is less blood for the muscles, our hearts have to work harder, our heart rate increases, and the relative intensity of the run increases,” he said. “You simply cannot run as fast in hot conditions.”

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. The news network said Tuesday that Hasselbeck will join co-anchors Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade on the three-hour morning show “Fox & Friends” in September. Wednesday will be her last day after a decade on “The View.”

Hasselbeck parlayed her popularity as a contestant on the TV reality show “Survivor” into a job on Barbara Walters’ ABC daytime show in 2003. During her decade on the show, she authored two cookbooks. She’s politically more conservative than her co-hosts on “The View,” which often led to some conten-tious moments.

Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes said that Hasselbeck’s “warm and engaging personality made her a star” and an “excellent conversationalist.” She replaces Gretchen Carlson, who will be given her own daytime show on Fox, Ailes said.

“When Elisabeth survived ‘Survivor,’ we wanted to make sure she would stay afloat,” Walters said. “We have had 10 wonderful years with her and she will now be swimming in new waters. We will miss her and wish her everything good.”

Rumors that Hasselbeck was leaving first surfaced in March, drawing a heated

denial from Walters at the time. She also said it was not true that Hasselbeck’s political views made her unpopular in the executive suites at “The View.”

Her views won’t be a problem on “Fox & Friends,” which is popular with a conservative audience. The talk show is the most popular cable news program in the morning.

Hasselbeck’s departure is part of a year of turnover at “The View.” Joy Be-har, one of the show’s original panelists, is also leaving. Walters, who developed the show, is retiring from television next spring. That leaves Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd as the remaining panelists. Jenny McCarthy, the former Playboy playmate who currently hosts a show on VH1, has been mentioned as a possible new panelist.

LONDON — Elton John says he is grateful to be alive after learning he had been playing European tour dates while suffering from undiagnosed appendicitis. The 66-year-old musi-cian is quoted in The Sun newspaper

Wednesday as saying he had struggled through the shows in pain, thinking he had food poisoning.

He later learned “I was a ticking time bomb. I guess I could have died at any time.” He added: “I feel so lucky and grateful to be alive.”

On Tuesday John canceled a show

in London’s Hyde Park and other summer dates while he is treated for an inflamed appendix and surround-ing abscess.

He is due to have surgery in the next few weeks after treatment with antibi-otics. John’s new album, “The Diving Board,” is due out in September.
