“A Walk Among the Tombstones,” by director Scott Frank, is based on the eponymous novel by Lawrence Block from 1992, a police story full of black humor and violence.

The 62-year-old from Northern Ireland, who has chosen action hero roles notably since 2008’s “Taken,” is New York cop-turned-private detective Matthew Scudder, alcoholic and traumatized by a past case gone wrong.

Drug trafficker Kenny Kristo, played by Dan Stevens from hit British TV series “Downton Abbey,” asks him to probe the mysterious disappearance and then brutal murder of his wife.

As he delves deeper into the case, Scudder uncovers other, more horrific crimes.

Neeson, nominated for an Oscar for 1993’s “Schindler’s List,” said he felt at home with “a character that is not in a good relation with the world, tortured, alcoholic.

“These guys wake up in the morning and have to think of a reason to get up. All these little heroic battles they have every day, they fight against them every day,” he said ahead of the film’s US release on Friday.

He has already played similar roles, includ-ing 2001’s “The Grey,” as well as the first two “Taken” movies (the third is in post-production and due out next year) and this year’s “Non-Stop.”

MONTERREY - US pop star Miley Cyrus has caused a stir in Mexico after getting whipped on a giant fake buttocks with the country’s flag during a concert, prompting an official investigation.

A video shows the provocative singer bent over as two singers whip her mock backside with small flags, including one in the distinct green, white and red colors of Mexico, on Tues-day in the northern city of Monterrey.

The Bangerz Tour 2014 concert coincided with Mexico’s independence day festivities and the video made waves across local media.

A spokesman for the interior ministry told AFP the probe was launched Wednesday at the request of the Nuevo Leon state congress, which accused Cyrus of desecrating the flag.

The spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “the company that brought her

here would be sanctioned, not her” because it was the organizer’s responsibility to agree with Cyrus the content of the concert.

The fine could amount to $1,270, although the legislature also called for 36-hour jail time. The show at Monterrey Arena was promoted by a firm named Zignia Live.

Nuevo Leon lawmaker Francisco Trevino Cabello, of the conservative National Action Party, called the flag flap a “jibe” against his country.

“They are hitting her with the flag, or clean-ing her backside. It’s a lack of respect,” he told the local congress before it voted unanimously to ask for sanctions.

“The interior ministry must sanction the singer Miley Cyrus for desecrating the flag,” he said, adding that authorities should monitor her future shows in Mexico.

Cyrus was due to perform in Monterrey again on Wednesday.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. JIMBARAN - InterContinental Bali Resort is a magical set-ting for weddings, commitment ceremonies or the renewal of vows. In addition to an already impressive array of exclusive and utterly scenic wedding venues, the Resort is delighted to present its unique, new, ‘Jimbaran Bay Wedding’ package (for a maximum of 20 guests), featuring a ceremony at sea aboard a traditional ‘Jukung’ fishing boat.

What could be more romantic than tying the knot with the one you love aboard a wooden sailboat in the magnificent Jimbaran Bay? Within the glorious surroundings of Bali’s beautiful coastline, a Balinese ‘jukung’ fishing boat pro-vides an unforgettably unique venue for a blissful wedding ceremony at sea. And, of course, you will be able to inject your own personalities and preferences to make the occasion personal and truly special.

The late afternoon is the most favoured time for a Jimbaran Bay Wedding; the heat of the day will have subsided but there will still be enough light left for taking stunning photographs on the idyllic Jimbaran Beach, culminating with a brilliant sunset over the sea. The event might then continue with a deli-cious sit down buffet or three-course dinner and an abundance of champagne, served alfresco in a garden strewn with flowers and lit by candles and firebowls.

Many parties expected the former deputy governor of Bali could be included in the cabinet of Jokowi-JK. Similar expectation was also conveyed by the National Secretary of Jokowi, Gusti Agung Putri Astrid, when asked for her confirmation on Wednesday (Sep 17).

She claimed to continuously monitor the development who would be nominated as the ministers in the

cabinet of Jokowi-JK. Until the an-nouncement of the names including in the ministers of the Jokowi-JK government, the name AA Pus-payoga indeed stayed to be listed in the survey.

She was very grateful because the charismatic royal figure was ap-preciated. She had a desire that the elected president could accommodate one of the best cadres of the Indone-

sian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Bali.

She said that in every respect, the royal figure of Satria Palace Denpasar was very qualified. His experience in the government included the chair-man of Denpasar House, mayor of Denpasar and then deputy governor of Bali. She assessed the capability and quality of Puspayoga was very adequate. Moreover, AA Puspayoga was a clean political party (PDI-P) leader and had a strong commitment to encourage the development of rural economy.

“Mr. AA Puspayoga is very ap-propriate. His vision and mission in the mental revolution and vivacity to develop the rural economy is equal to the grand scenario of Jokowi leader-ship,” said the graduate of master program majoring in Politics of Alter-native Development at one of the best universities in the Netherlands.

This human right activist since 1994 said that in Bali it was time to develop tourism that no longer oriented in dollar revenue, but in rural-based tourism. “The mission owned by AA Puspayoga is appro-priate with the expectation of Mr. Jokowi,” she said.

She mentioned that Bali having various rural potentials such as weav-ing, bamboo crafts, rattan, paintings, handicrafts and other creative small industries needed serious attention and should be developed. Creative industry had the potential to gener-ate huge foreign exchanges. “As a matter of fact, Bali does not only rely on nature, culture and sports, but also on the rural creative industries. These creative industries need at-tention as having been motivated by Mr. Puspayoga all this time,” said the holder of bachelor degrees in Social and Political Sciences of Airlangga University. DENPASAR - The success to uncover the counterfeit money case made the Denpasar Police Criminal Investigator develop the case. Three suspects arrested consisting of Agustinus Handoyo, Abdul Rohman aka Hery and Diana Wahyuni have been examined intensively. From the results of investigation against the suspect Agustinus, he claimed to have printed counterfeit money as much as IDR 9.6 billion since the past two years. Counterfeit money in the denomination of IDR 100,000 had been distributed to a number of regions namely East Java, Central Java, West Java and Bali.

Chief of Denpasar Police, Djoko Hariutomo, accompanied by the Spokesman Hery Wiyanto, said on Wednesday (Sep 17) that his party still continued to do further investigation. The suspect Agustinus was arrested on Jalan A. Yani, Semarang. Earlier, two other suspects were also arrested namely Abdul Rohman aka Hery who served as distributor, while Diana Wahyuni served as the courier.

“Having been developed, the suspect Agustinus confessed to have printed counterfeit money as much as IDR 300 million to IDR 400 million each month. Thus, it was estimated the counterfeit money printed and distributed has reached IDR 9.6 billion,” he explained. Djoko explained the disclosure of the illegal business was originated from the arrest of the suspect Diana Wahyuni. This woman was ar-rested while trying to take the package in one of the freight companies on Jalan Kapten Regug Denpasar, Monday (Sep 1).

From the suspect, police could seize the counterfeit money with the denomination of IDR 100,000 amounting to 210 pieces valued at IDR 21 million. From the results of investigation led by Unit Chief 1 of the Denpasar Police Criminal Investigator, Sulhadi re-captured the syndicate of the suspect Agustinus at Ahmad Yani Airport, Se-marang, Central Java (Aug 7). This suspect had the task to print the counterfeit money. “When we searched his home, it was found the printer and counterfeit money,” he explained to media crews.

Besides, his party also secured the equipment of screen print-ing, screen, a CPU, monitor, printer and paint. After raiding the Agustinus’ home, police re-developed the case. Finally, police could arrest another suspect Abdul Roham aka Hery at Globan village, Purwodadi subdistrict, Grobongan, Central Java, on Tuesday (Sep 9). From the hands of the suspect, police could seize counterfeit money valued at IDR 10 million. The evidence was hidden in the dashboard of Daihatsu Xenia vehicle.

Further, he explained that the suspect distributed counterfeit money with the ratio of 1 to 4. In other words, a piece of genuine money was distributed with four pieces of counterfeit money. Typi-cally, the counterfeit money was distributed at remote places, where people could not distinguish between the genuine and counterfeit money. Likewise, each delivery to the courier and distributor came to at least IDR 21 million. “Each region is suspected to have a cou-rier. However, to be sure, we still carry out further investigation,” he exclaimed.

Djoko Hariutomo added that with the success in uncovering the syndicates of the counterfeit money becoming the target of opera-tion, a number of provincial police in Indonesia would do something for their personnel. By all means, any officers getting involved in the disclosure would be given a reward. “Certainly, we will give a reward to our personnel. Besides, I also appreciate those who have already worked well,” he added. (kmb21)

LONDON — They came, they saw, and now they’ve jetted off to Milan for another round of catwalk shows. Fashion insiders got a taste of spring style trends at London Fashion Week. Here’s a round-up of some of the hottest looks, from girly ballerina skirts to sporty sandals:

- Flat is FabComfort is no longer the enemy

of style. London designers have collectively rebelled against the high heel. Sensible flat shoes — be they sneakers, sandals, rubber boots or brogues — were every-where on the London catwalks.

Burberry Prorsum favored lace-

up sneakers and flat, Birkenstock-like sandals in colorful leather. Christopher Raeburn models sported similar sandals with Vel-cro straps.

Christopher Kane, who led the trend for plastic slippers — or “pool sliders” — this summer, up-dated them in black and burgundy leather. And Temperley, the queen of ladylike glamour, launched her own sneaker line.

Even front-row VIPs were sporting Nikes and flats — al-though Vogue’s Anna Wintour is unlikely to succumb to the trend any time soon.

- Sporty ChicThe rise of the sneaker is just

part of fashion’s ongoing obsession

with sportswear — even if none of those clothes are meant for the gym. The past year has seen neo-prene and scuba-inspired designer clothes fly off the shelves, and dressed-down chic is still going strong for spring.

Preen took inspiration from cricket, while at Topshop Unique supermodel Cara Delevingne looked sassy in a frilly-hemmed tennis dress. The latter brand also featured cycling jerseys, shorts and bowling bags.

Hunter Original, the rubber Wellington boot maker, filled its runway with Boy Scout-style shirts and shorts, rain jackets and hooded parkas, many in fun colors like lavender and yellow.

- Tulle and TiersNot the sporty type? Feel free to

unleash your inner princess. Few dresses are more romantic than those at Burberry, which came in tiers of soft tulle and often sported a ribbon tied around the waist with a big bow.

Bows — fun, giant ones, worn on top of the head like Minnie Mouse — were the highlight at Sibling. Elsewhere, tiered or pleated skirts, frilly hems and ruffles were everywhere on the runway.

Too Barbie? Just pick something edgier — a leather jacket, a chunky heel — to tone it down.

- Return of Denim JacketAccording to Burberry,

the humble jeans jacket is the cover-up of choice come next spring. While the lux-ury brand’s famous trench coats highlighted its grand finale, Burberry opened its show with a dark-wash, slim-cut denim jacket with a white sheepskin trim.

The brand also showed many other cropped jackets in a myriad of colors and de-tails, worn over delicate cocktail dresses.

- Invasion of the NerdsTech fashion is not quite a trend

yet but it created more buzz than ever before at London Fashion Week, which this year partnered with Google.

Several editors were seen sport-ing Google Glass, the Internet-connected eyewear. Even Net-a-Porter, the luxury online fashion retailer, was selling the glasses — a designer version with the Diane von Furstenberg brand at a hefty 1,250 pounds ($2,042) each.

Will the notoriously picky fash-ion crowd embrace tech acces-sories? Ah, we’ll have to wait and see.

DENPASAR - An U.S. woman detained on the Indonesian resort island of Bali in connection with the murder of her mother has re-tained legal representation for her unborn child, the suspect’s legal team said.

Heather Mack, 19, from Chi-cago, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, were arrested on Aug. 13 as suspects in the death of Mack’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, 62, whose battered body was found in a suitcase in a taxi outside a luxury hotel.

“I’m here to represent Heather’s unborn child,” lawyer Vanessa Fa-via told reporters late on Wednesday outside the police station where Mack is being detained in Bali’s provincial capital of Denpasar.

Favia said Mack was three months pregnant.

“I’m here to make sure that she’s getting proper nutrition and ... all the medical attention she needs, so that she can have a healthy baby in the future,” Favia said.

The two suspects have not been formally charged with a crime. Un-der Indonesian law, charges would follow an investigation that could

take weeks.Police in Bali, who last week

began interrogating Mack, told Reuters on Thursday, she would not get special treatment because of her pregnancy.

Mack’s own lawyer said the in-vestigation was still going on.

“I just hope that public opinion will be held until there’s more evidence and not to judge at this point because it’s a little bit early,” Michael Elkin, Mack’s U.S. lawyer, told reporters at the police station.

Asked how Mack was feeling, Favia said: “She’s glad to have her team of lawyers to support her.”

Charlotte Casiraghi, the face of Gucci’s new cosmetics line wearing a black leather timed cocktail dress, and Kate Moss, in a python leather coat over a black jersey dress, were front and center for Gucci’s preview of its hippy chic collection for next summer.

Baggy boyfriend denim was one of the touchstones of the collec-tion that is an updated ode to the 1970s, designer Frida Giannini’s favorite bygone era. The denim is relaxed and never binding, from the wide-legged cropped mariner jeans with big gold buttons, to the blousy denim dresses with lacy, eyelet panels.

That the looks are versatile is highlighted by the choice to send out the denim looks alternating with short, printed silk cocktail dresses, sometimes worn with wispy fur vests, or featuring

military brocade detailing, or as a kimono cut.

It’s a collection that is full of sepa-rates that can form the backbone of wardrobes for a long time to come: relaxed cropped jeans, suede coats and tunics, braided leather belts, a soft version of the Jackie bag and Gucci boots — to the ankle or knee. The palate is likewise easy to adopt: pearl white, denim, brown, burgundy and burnt orange.

MILAN — Milan rang in its fashion week with something old, and something new, and some still on the cusp. Tried-and-true designers like Gucci opened up five days of womenswear previews for next spring and summer, alongside some hot, young tal-

ent -- Stella Jean and Fausto Puglesi, to name two -- who have gotten a

firm leg up in recent seasons as Italy’s fashion city has sought to energize the moda Milanese with new names.

medium for works and businesses. Their presence has a role in the dis-tribution of equal income,” Chair-man of Indonesian Cooperative Board (Dekopin), Nurdin Halid,

said on Thursday. According to him, the coopera-

tives have contributed in overcom-ing the threats of crisis in the world, such as energy, food, and global warming.

Nurdin said the cooperatives around the world must continue to grow, so they can address the needs of a global population of 7.2 billion.

UBUD - Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul has been dropped by an international literary festival in Bali after the event refused to meet his “11th-hour request” for a $20,000 fee to appear, its organisers said Wednesday.

The Trinidad-born British writer had been one of the biggest names booked for this year’s Ubud Writ-ers and Readers Festival (UWRF), scheduled for the start of next month on the Indonesian resort island.

However the event’s founder and director, Janet DeNeefe, said they had decided to cancel his appear-ance after he asked for the fee.

“After having committed to the festival months ago, Sir V.S. Naipaul made an 11th-hour re-quest for a $20,000 appearance fee that would have jeopardised the longevity of the UWRF and all of those involved,” she said in a statement.

“As a not-for-profit festival, we rely on the goodwill and generosity of our sponsors, partners and the au-

thors and artists who so graciously donate their time and resources to make the UWRF such a magi-cal event,” added the Australian, who has lived in Bali for almost 30 years.

The organisers said the $130 tickets to the “Evening with V.S. Naipaul” would be refunded in full. He had also been due to feature in a one-hour “In Conversation” session.

Naipaul’s agent Andrew Wylie could not immediately be contacted but in comments to the Guardian newspaper disputed the account, saying the withdrawal was due to a conflict in the author’s schedule and not fees.

Naipaul, who won the Nobel Literature Prize in 2001 and whose works include “A House for Mr Biswas” and “A Bend in the River”, will be replaced by British novel-ist Zia Haider Rahman, who is of Bangladeshi origin, said festival organisers.

The festival runs from October 1 to 5 and involves some 150 writers from 25 countries.

GIANYAR - The knowledge of tourist guides about the tourism area existing in the Pakerisan watershed (DAS) in Gianyar remains minimal. It is evident from the confusion of information and explanation provided by the tourist guides about the existence of tourist object in the region.

It was recognized by the Head of Gianyar Government Tourism Office, Anak Agung Ari Brahmanta, Wednesday (Sep 17) on the sidelines of provision of training for dozens of tourist guides along the Pakerisan and Petanu watershed.

Pakerisan watershed indeed retained consid-erable potential which was not shared by other regions or other countries. Along the Pakerisan watershed followed some temples such as the Tirta Empul, Mengening, Gunung Kawi, Pengu-kur-ukuran, Goa Gajah, Pegulingan, Kerobokan, Cliff Temple as well as Tegallinggah. All the temples retained high archaeological value, denoting the relics of the bygone age. “The problem is that the existence of tourist objects cannot be informed well and comprehensively to travelers,” he said.

Similar condition was also recognized by Chief of Bali Heritage Preservation Center (BP3), I Wayan Muliarsa. The Pakerisan and Petanu watershed area belonged to cultural

heritage area. So, it was very important to give careful attention to the submission of informa-tion to travelers in order to avoid any mistakes. “The information submitted must be correct and comprehensive,” said Muliarsa.

Gianyar County in this case the Government Tourism Office admitted to have published a guide book or information related to the Pakeri-san watershed area and information in English. Then, it was needed to equate the knowledge in providing information to travelers regarding the existence of the Pakerisan watershed area.

The Head of Government Tourism Office, Ari Brahmanta, added that for the similarity of information about the tourist attractions along the Pakerisan watershed, local guides would be provided with the knowledge so that they could better explain the true existence of the cultural heritage preservation having been recognized by the world.

In addition to knowledge, the ethics of tour-ist guides also became an important factor in the success of tourist guide in generating the economic activities of communities around the region.

“Mastery of a good and appropriate foreign language, hospitality and ethical behavior also become a major factor when communicating so that travelers can get impressed,” said I Nyoman Kandia, a tourism practitioner. (kmb16)

“Hopefully, the polemic of salary in-crease demand can be discontinued. The legislator must work first and show off the political performance and accomplish-ments to people. Now, they remain in hon-eymoon period with people and pay off the promises first to people,” said Mudarta in Denpasar, Wednesday (Sep 17).

“Do not ask for salary increase in a hurry because it can lead to unfavorable public opinion. When many people are still complaining about their life, the demand (for salary increase of legisla-tor) is something very sensitive. To that end, as a leader we in the political party invite colleagues in the House to clear up the matter,” said Oka Gunastawa separately.

To Mudarta, the salary of a legislator worth IDR 24 million to IDR 30 million

per month was enough that there is no need to demand for a salary increase. “Salary at IDR 26 million is equiva-lent to the salary of a minister. So, we consider it enough,” he said. He con-sidered the demand for salary increase by the legislator seemed unrealistic. Moreover, the legislators belonged to the upper middle class and should not have any problem financially or economically.

“In terms of economic aspect, they have been pretty well established. So, they are free from financial problems and are ready to serve the common interests. They go to Parliament to serve people and promote people’s aspirations, not to chase income,” he said.

He hoped the legislators to conduct their best, absorb people’s aspirations, set

a good example and be present in the midst of the community as people’s representa-tives. “If they have worked maximally and people’s aspirations have been struggled for properly, the legislators do not need to ask for a salary increase. Probably, people will even propose the increase to the government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Oka Gunastawa said that his party could not deny the high political cost spent during the legislative election. Admittedly, it was also considered to be burdensome to them. However, the solution was not necessarily to be com-pensated by demanding for higher salary. If the increase was made, it should be accompanied with in-depth and compre-hensive study. It had to be adjusted to the performance as per their functions such as controlling, budgeting and legislation and whether they could have increased the regionally generated revenue and people’s productivity.

“If their performance has been making a positive contribution to the functions, then it is appropriate time to talk about the increase of decent salary and other fa-cilities. Similarly, it must be calculated as well in proportion to the reality perceived by society,” he said. (kmb29)

TABANAN - Alas Kedaton tourist attraction will be equipped with new facility. It will offer a trekking path across paddy fields and kampong at Kukuh village. As planned, the path begins to be worked on in mid-December 2014. Headman of Kukuh, Ketut Budiarta, when asked for his confir-mation justified the making of the trekking path in the Alas Kedaton tourist attraction.

He explained that based on the inputs from travel agencies, the trekking path with the width of 2 meters and the length of approximately 1,200 meters was originally a dirt road. However, due to utilization by farmers to transport their crops, then the path was agreed to be covered with paving block. “This path is also used to anticipate traffic congestion at Kukuh village,” he said, Wednesday (Sep 17).

This road construction fund, added Budiarta, was obtained from the Rural Infrastructure Development Program (PPIP) disbursed by the Ministry of Public Works. The road making was worked on indepen-dently by Kukuh community. Workmanship of the road was from Tatag hamlet to Menalun hamlet.

Operations Manager of the Alas Kedaton tourist attraction, I Gusti Bagus Suryawan, said the road would be used for special trekking path. Aside from offering beautiful paddy field view, travelers would also be able to see various activities of local farmers cultivating their fields, herding ducks, plowing and others. “The location is far away from the hustles and bustles from urban life and surrounded by green paddy fields. Meanwhile, the existing large trees provide shade,” he said. (kmb28)

The Multinational Observer Group said the result of Wednes-day’s election, while still being finalized, would broadly reflect the will of voters. The endorsement paves the way for international sanctions to be dropped, including Fiji’s likely return this month to full status among the Commonwealth group of nations.

Five of the seven registered political parties that contested the election called on authorities to suspend the vote count until their complaints were investigated, but Supervisor of Elections Moham-med Saneem said Thursday he had rejected their request.

The election was the first since Voreqe Bainimarama seized con-trol in a 2006 coup and his Fiji

First party appeared victorious. With votes from three-fifths of polling stations counted, Fiji First was winning 60 percent of the vote, while its closest rival, the Sodelpa party, was trailing with 27 percent. The leaders from Sodelpa and four other parties told journalists they were concerned that multiple bal-lot boxes had been tampered with. They said some boxes had been removed without the ballots being counted while others had been stuffed with envelopes.

The international observers saw no evidence of misconduct or intimidation, according to their pre-liminary findings. The monitoring group of about 100 people was co-led by delegations from Australia, India and Indonesia.

The election was “enthusiasti-cally embraced by the voters of Fiji who were keen to participate in the democratic process,” the group said in a preliminary statement. “The election was conducted in an at-mosphere of calm, with an absence of electoral misconduct or evident intimidation.”

The group noted some shortcom-ings, including a complex voting system and a short timeframe for the election, resulting in some problems with voter registration and early voting.

It said that while Fijian journal-ists had made good efforts to cover the buildup to the election, a restric-tive media framework, including onerous penalties, limited their ability to “examine rigorously the claims of candidates and parties.” The group’s overall endorsement was welcomed by Australia and New Zealand. “This was a historic day for the people of Fiji,” Austra-lian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in a statement.

WASHINGTON — In a sym-bolic show of support for Ukraine’s fledgling government, President Barack Obama is to host Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the Oval Office on Thursday after the leader of the former Soviet repub-lic speaks to a rare joint session of Congress. Poroshenko arrives in Washington seeking more robust U.S military assistance to help his country in its fight against Russian-backed rebels. Obama so far has resisted Ukraine’s request for lethal assistance, though the U.S. has pro-vided about $60 million in nonlethal aid to Ukraine’s military.

White House officials made clear that Poroshenko’s visit — his first to the U.S. since being elected this summer — was aimed in part at sending a message to Russia about the West’s backing for the embattled former Soviet republic.

“The picture of President Po-roshenko sitting in the Oval Office will be worth at least a thousand words — both in English and Rus-sian,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

Ukraine and Kremlin-backed separatists have been locked in a monthslong fight for control of eastern Ukrainian cities that sit on Russia’s border, aggression that followed Russia’s annexation of the strategically important Crimean Peninsula. The U.S. and Western allies have condemned Russia’s provocations, levying a series of economic sanctions and restrict-ing President Vladimir Putin’s involvement in some international organizations.

But the penalties have done little to shift Putin’s calculus. In recent weeks, the West has accused Russia of moving troops and equipment across its border with Ukraine, though the Kremlin denies such involvement.

Ukraine and the Russian-backed separatists inked a cease-fire agree-ment on Sept. 5, though the deal has been violated repeatedly. On Wednesday, shelling in rebel-held parts of the east killed at least 12 civilians, as a top leader of pro-Russian rebels rejected Ukrainian legislation meant to end the unrest by granting self-rule to large swaths of the east.

Poroshenko, a billionaire busi-nessman, won Ukraine’s presi-dential election in May after his country’s Russian-backed leader fled amid popular protests. Western leaders have praised Poroshenko’s commitment to reform, and Obama will press him Thursday for more aggressive political and economic actions that can stabilize the fragile nation.

At the heart of the conflict be-tween Ukraine and Russia is the former Soviet republic’s desire to strengthen ties with Europe. Porosh-enko has only deepened those efforts, making a high-profile appearance at the NATO summit this month and overseeing the backing of a deal this week to strengthen economic and political ties with Europe.

The deal lowers trade tariffs be-tween Europe and Ukraine, requires Ukrainian goods to meet European regulatory standards and forces the Kiev government to undertake major political and economic re-forms.

LONDON - Russia’s econ-omy will contract next year as a result of the crisis with Ukraine, the EBRD develop-ment bank forecast on Thurs-day after slashing its predic-tion for growth.

Ukraine’s economy will meanwhile contract faster than expected, in turn weighing on other emerging economies in the region, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said in its latest outlook report.

Russia’s economy will con-tract by 0.2 percent in 2015, the EBRD said after predicting in May that it would expand by 0.6 percent next year.

The bank, founded in 1991 to help ex-Soviet bloc countries such as Russia and Ukraine make the transition to free-market economies and democracy, maintained its forecast of zero Russian growth for this year.

“The Russian economy will come under pressure both from Western sanctions and the sanctions that Moscow has imposed on the West in response,” the EBRD said.

The United States and Euro-pean Union last week hit Rus-sia with tough new sanctions over Moscow’s “unacceptable behaviour” in Ukraine.

In some of the toughest measures yet to punish the Kremlin for allegedly foment-ing the insurgency, Wash-

ington targeted Russia’s top bank Sberbank -- which holds the deposits of nearly half all Russian savers -- and leading energy and technology com-panies.

Moscow has meanwhile threatened to bar EU airlines from its airspace, and has drawn up a list targeting im-ports of consumer goods and second-hand cars from the West.

The EBRD added that Ukraine’s economy is pre-dicted to shrink by 9.0 percent this year, more than May’s forecast for a contraction of 7.0 percent. Gross Domestic Product is set to come in at minus 3.0 percent in 2015, the London-based institution added.

“The escalation of mili-tary turbulence in eastern Ukraine is weighing heavily on the economy and its ex-ternal financing needs,” said the bank.

The International Monetary Fund earlier this month warned that Ukraine may need an extra $19 billion (14.5 billion euros) in assistance should it fail to quell the brutal pro-Kremlin up-rising by the end of next year.

The global lender recently released the second $1.39-billion tranche of its $17.1-billion lifeline despite “major uncertainties” and on the as-sumption that the ex-Soviet country’s Western allies would be ready to pitch in with extra assistance if asked.

MADRID - International tour-ist numbers grew 4.6 percent in the first half of 2014, boosted by strong growth in the Americas, Asia and parts of Europe, the World Tourism Organisation said Wednesday.

The number of international tour-ists surged to around 517 million between January and June, 22 million more than during the same time last year, the Madrid-based United Na-tions body said in a statement.

“These results show that tourism is consolidating the positive perfor-mance of recent years, providing development and economic oppor-tunities worldwide”, said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai.

“Despite geopolitical and econom-ic challenges, the number of interna-tional tourist arrivals has grown by five percent a year on average since 2010, a trend that has translated into more economic growth, more exports and more jobs,” he added.

Tourist arrivals rose at the fastest rate in the Americas, where numbers were up by six percent.

In Europe, the world’s most-visited region, numbers continued to grow from last year, with arrivals in northern countries growing eight per-cent. And Asia-Pacific posted a five percent rise in tourist arrivals, with major destinations such as Japan, South Korea and Malaysia posting double-digit growth rates.

“The region has been benefiting

from ongoing economic growth, con-tinuous investment in infrastructure and visa facilitation measures,” the statement said.

Asian nations are rushing to build hundreds of new airports to cope with surging demand from a fast-growing middle class for air travel in the re-gion. Business consultancy Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific predicts over 350 new airports will be built in the Asia-Pacific region over the next ten years at a cost of over $100 billion (78 billion).

In 2013 the number of interna-tional tourist arrivals grew by five per cent from the previous year to 1.09 billion and the UN body expects the figure will grow again by 4.0-4.5 percent this year.

“Decisive action is needed by all members for stronger and more balanced growth,” the IMF said in a note to the G20 ahead of the meeting Saturday and Sunday in Cairns.

In February in Sydney, the G20 finance ministers fixed a goal of raising global economic growth by 2.0 percent over five years, but left the strategies to reach it vague.

“The global recovery should regain strength but downside risks have risen,” the IMF said, urging the G20 to work together to produce beneficial spillover effects that will help them as well as the global economy.

According to the 188-nation IMF, the advanced economies who have the means -- specifically the United States and Germany -- and

certain emerging-market economies like Brazil and India should increase public spending on infrastructure.

Structural reforms are needed across all the G20 economies to boost potential output, it said, point-ing to the productivity boost that would come from easing limits on trade and investment in Indonesia, Russia and Turkey.

The IMF called for labor reform

that lifts gender and age barriers in advanced economies, such as the US and Japan, and allows greater par-ticipation, such as in South Africa, where an “important fraction” of the population remains unemployed.

“Actions to increase labor de-mand and remove impediments to employment are also needed in stressed euro area economies,” it said.

DENPASAR - Having been renovated for a year, the domestic terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport Bali was in operation, Wednesday (Sep 17). Operation of the terminal was marked with some special events to welcome the passengers in the commercial area of the domestic arrival and departure terminal.

“Domestic Terminal was deco-rated differently with the display of kite decorations in appropriate with the theme of Bali Kites Fes-tival, an annual kite festival held at Padang Galak, Sanur, Bali,” said the Director of PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero), Tommy Soetomo.

The opening of domestic terminal was begun with the reception through the embedding of frangipani and the distribution of Balinese typical cloth and a special bracelet for the first pas-senger arriving and departing through the domestic terminal. Passengers could also participate in becoming a part of the history of the domestic terminal opening through the wall of signature provided.

“Besides, some entertainment is also performed at the departure terminal, ranging from live music, photo booth, kids face painting to dart games. Passengers who participate in the outlet of dart game have the opportunity to get free coffee and shopping vouchers which can be used in the commer-cial area of the domestic terminal on the same day,” said Tommy.

According to Tommy, the activi-ties posed a series of thematic events or-ganized to provide a unique and enjoy-able experience for the airport service users. “Hopefully, this event can get a good response and improve the satis-faction of service users at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Air-port,” he said.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport was do-ing some develop-ments, including the up-grading of the domestic termi-nal. The terminal had a total area of 65,800 square me-ters, or 400 percent more spacious than the area of the old terminal.

The new domestic terminal was equipped with 62 check-in coun-ters, 4 transit & transfer counters, 19 ticketing counters, 8 boarding gates equipped with 5 passenger boarding bridges, 7 arrival gates, 5 units of conveyor belt and other supporting facilities.

Tommy added that in addition to increasing the number of facili-ties, the building with a capacity of 9.4 million passengers was also supported with the latest system in check-in counter, namely the Common Use Check-in System that could optimize the check-in process and better arrangement of commercial area.

The concept of new commer-cial area offered at the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport posed the endeavor of Angkasa Pura I in providing world-class facilities and services for passengers. Commercial layout was based on several principles, such as simplification of passenger flow, improvement of commercial area in the central zone, deployment and combination of commercial area design as well as provision of last minute shopping zone. Significant improvement allowed all passengers to pass through the main commercial area.

“This new commercial concept implies the spirit of Bali and Indo-nesia through products, services, shopping convenience, passenger experience as well as the endeavor of Angkasa Pura I to increase the non-aeronautical revenues,” af-firmed Tommy. (kmb27)

“We want to improve our military relationship. During this period, Indonesia and Thailand have been sharing information and holding dis-cussions about the national borders,” he said, after welcoming the deputy commander of First Military Region, Major General Varah Boonyasit, in Denpasar.

Maj. Gen. Boonyasit’s visit to the headquarters of Military Area Command IX/Udayana follows the recent visit of Maj. Gen. Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, commander of Military Area Command IX/Udayana, to the First Military Region.

The army’s top military com-manders have discussed various is-sues, including security information

exchange in the border areas. He noted that the Military Area

Command IX/Udayana is in charge of the national border with Timor Leste. Therefore, Indonesia can exchange experiences with the Thai military, which also shares border with sev-eral countries, such as Myanmar and Cambodia.

Earlier, the Indonesian army and the Thailand army had cooperated through an exchange program of personnel for studying the military developments of the two countries.

The Thai military also wanted information on the security strat-egy applied by the Indonesian army when frequent international events are held in Bali, which are safe and

successful.“Moreover, some places in Thai-

land and Bali are tourism attractions. We have been learning from each other about security, especially in Bali, which often hosts international events. He (Varah Boonyasit) wanted to gather intelligence on the security strategy and system applied,” Maj. Gen. Wisnu pointed out.

He explained that the key suc-cess of the Indonesian military in securing every international event is the cooperation among the army, police, traditional Balinese security called Pecalang, and every com-munity.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Varah Boonyasit said that his visit to Bali is a follow up to strengthen military ties between Indonesia and Thai-land.

“It is a policy between the two armies. Besides visits, we also con-duct educational cooperation to im-prove our relationship,” he added.

HONG KONG - Indonesia’s finance minister said Thursday he was “optimistic” the country could achieve 7.0 percent growth by 2017 but warned that incoming president Joko Widodo faces a major chal-lenge in pushing much-needed infrastructure development.

Southeast Asia’s biggest econ-omy expanded just 5.12 percent in the second quarter to June, its slowest rate in five years, high-lighting the problems facing the reform-minded Widodo when he takes office next month.

Indonesia and other emerging markets have also been hit by huge outflows of foreign cash since May when the US Federal Reserve first signalled it may taper off its $85 billion a month bond-buying pro-gramme.

Widodo has pledged to raise GDP growth to seven percent a year within two years by attracting foreign investment, especially to the manufacturing sector and cut-ting red tape, but many economists consider the target ambitious.

“I don’t think this will happen in 2015 because of the normalisation of the US policy, but if you’re talk-ing about 2017, I’m quite optimis-tic,” Finance Minister Chatib Basri said at a media briefing at the CLSA Investors’ Forum in Hong Kong.

“By improving infrastructure the

money is flowing back to Indonesia, then within two years, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re talking about 7.0 percent economic growth,” said Basri.

He added that the issue of land acquisition was one of the main obstacles holding back major infra-structure development.

“If we can settle the issues of land clearing, then you know, the economy will fly,” the finance minister in the outgoing govern-ment of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.

“The reason why we decided to have 5.2 percent growth (this year) was because we needed to slow down the economy in order to curb the problem of the economic deficit,” Basri said, adding this policy could remain until the end of the year.

The government introduced ag-gressive rate hikes last year along with other measures aimed at slow-ing imports.

Indonesia has enjoyed a decade of relative peace and stability under Yudhoyono, helping to transform it into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a major investment destination.

But foreign companies operat-ing in Indonesia have long com-plained of nationalistic policies, particularly in the resources sector, rampant corruption, and creaking infrastructure.

BEIRUT — Nearly three million Syrian children are not attending school due to the war raging in their country, an international charity group said Thursday.

The report by the Britain-based Save the Children added that hun-dreds of thousands of displaced children are struggling to enroll for school in their host countries and in Syria.

The report spotlighted how Syria’s conflict, now entering its fourth year, is denying a decent edu-cation to a generation of children, with consequences that may last for

generations.Within Syria, the report esti-

mated that 3,465 schools, or one-fifth of the country’s educational buildings, were either destroyed or damaged, or are being used for military purposes.

“It is absolutely shameful that the obligation to protect schools is not being respected in this conflict, endangering the lives of innocent children,” said the organization’s regional director, Roger Hearn.

Syria’s civil war has killed at least 190,000 people, according to the U.N. Nearly three million Syr-ians have fled the country.

SEOUL — South Korean offi-cials say North Korean reporters are using fax and American email ser-vices to file stories from the Asian Games in Incheon because the northerners’ websites are blocked in the South.

An official from Seoul’s Uni-fication Ministry said Thursday that the North Koreans have a direct communication line set up

for the games to send faxes. They are also using email accounts from American Internet companies such as Google and Yahoo to send their stories to Pyongyang.

The Korean Peninsula is still technically in a state of war because there’s never been a peace treaty to end the 1950-53 Korean War. There is little communication between the rivals, and South Korea blocks access of official North Korean news sites.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he had been briefed on Wednesday night about the operation that was prompted by information that an Islamic State movement leader in the Middle East was calling on Australian supporters to kill. Ab-bott was asked about reports that the people detained were planning to publicly behead a random person in Sydney.

“That’s the intelligence we received,” he told reporters. “The exhortations — quite direct exhor-tations — were coming from an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIL to networks of sup-port back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country.” ISIL refers to the al-Qaida splinter group leading Sunni mili-tants in Iraq, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which now calls itself simply Islamic State. “This is not just suspicion, this is intent and that’s why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have,” he added. Abbott did not name the Australian.

Police have issued an arrest war-rant for a former Sydney nightclub bouncer, Mohammad Ali Baryalei, 33, who is suspected to be Austra-lia’s most senior member of the Islamic State group. About 800 fed-eral and state police officers were involved in the Sydney operation

— the largest in Australian history, Federal Police Deputy Commis-sioner Andrew Colvin said. Police also conducted raids in the eastern cities of Brisbane and Logan.

One of those detained, 22-year-old Omarjan Azari of Sydney, appeared briefly in a Sydney court on Thursday. Prosecutor Michael Allnutt said Azari was involved in a plan to “gruesomely” execute a randomly selected person — some-thing that was “clearly designed to shock and horrify” the public. That plan involved an “unusual level of fanaticism,” he said. Azari is charged with conspiracy to prepare for a terrorist attack. The potential penalty was not immedi-ately clear.

In court documents, Azari was accused of conspiring with Baryalei and others between May and Sep-tember of this year to prepare for a terrorist attack. Allnutt said the charge stemmed from the intercep-tion of a phone call a couple days ago. Azari did not apply for bail and did not enter a plea. His next court appearance was set for Nov. 13.

The arrests come just days after the country raised its terror warn-ing to the second-highest level in response to the domestic threat posed by supporters of the Islamic State group.

“Police believe that this group

that we have executed this op-eration on today had the intention and had started to carry out plan-ning to commit violent acts here in Australia,” said Colvin, who is also the acting Federal Police Commissioner. “Those violent acts particularly related to random acts against members of the public. So what we saw today and the opera-tion that continues was very much about police disrupting the potential for violence against the Australian community at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Police declined to reveal exact details of the attack they believe was being plotted. New South Wales Police Commissioner An-drew Scipione said only that it was to be carried out against a member of the public on the street and was at “a very high level.” “Right now is a time for calm,” Scipione said. “We need to let people know that they are safe, and certainly from our perspective, we know that the work this morning will ensure that all of those plans that may have been on foot have been thwarted.”

Last week, Australian police arrested two men in Brisbane for allegedly preparing to fight in Syria, recruiting jihadists and raising money for the al-Qaida offshoot group Jabhat al-Nusra, also known as the Nusra Front.

SYDNEY — Counterterrorism raids in Sydney on Thursday were sparked by security intel-ligence that the Islamic State movement was planning a random, violent attack in Australia as a demonstration of its reach, the prime minister said. Australian police detained 15 people and raided more than a dozen properties across Sydney in the country’s largest counterterrorism operation, saying intelligence indicated an attack was being planned on Australian soil.

President Yudhoyono is sched-uled to attend numerous meetings and to meet various parties prior to his return to Jakarta on October 1, 2014, before his term in office ends on October 20.

“This is my last and the longest overseas visit as president during the past 10 years. It is the longest trip because we will undertake three bilateral activities in Portu-gal, the United States, and Japan,” Yudhoyono noted moments before his plane took off from the Halim Perdanakusuma Airport’s runway.

At the airport, the president was seen off by Vice President Boediono, President-elect Joko

Widodo, Coordinating Minister for Economy Chairul Tanjug, and Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Na-talegawa, among several others.

The head of state explained that his trip to Portugal this time is to reciprocate a historic visit to Indonesia by Portuguese President Cavaco da Silva in May 2012.

In the United States, President Yudhoyono is scheduled to attend the 69th UN General Assembly, UN Climate Summit, and Open Gov-ernment Partnership High Level Event (OGP-HLE) in New York.

While in New York, Yudhoyono will also hold bilateral meetings with the presidents of the United

States and Mexico, and the prime ministers of Australia and the Netherlands.

From New York, the Indonesian president will head to Washington DC to inaugurate the Indonesian Muslim Association in America Center (IMAAM Center) and to hold a dialog with the US Muslim figures regarding the current de-velopments in the Islamic world, including the instability in the Middle East.

Finally, in Japan, Yudhoyono will meet and exchange views with Indonesian economic players and experts in the country before return-ing to Jakarta on October 1.

SEMARANG - The Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) is scheduled to hold a national meeting here on Friday to Sunday to among others officially change its stance from an opposition to a party that supports the government.

“The 4th national working meeting will be started with an official state-ment from Megawati Soekarnoputri as general chairperson to official declare

the party’s support to president-elect Joko Widodo and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla,” PDIP secretary general Tjahjo Kumolo said on Thursday.

A total of 1,595 cadres are expected to attend the event including Joko Widodo and also Jusuf Kalla.

Tjahjo said the meeting would be very important as a moment of truth for the party to prepare itself as a government party.

He said the change in the political stance happened after PDIP came out

as the winner in the legislative elec-tions and also the presidential election in cooperation with some other parties that support the Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla pair.

Tjahjo said the meeting carrying a theme of “Fighting for People’s Welfare” and a sub-theme of “Filling Years of Victory with a ‘Trisakti’Way” would focus on discussing PDIP’s plan to implement its election victo-ries with programs for improving the welfare of the people.

More copters added to fight forest fires

JAKARTA — Indonesia on Wednesday added more water-drop-ping helicopters to fight forest and plantation wildfires that are spreading haze across the region, limiting vis-ibility and increasing air pollution.

A Russian-made Mi-8 helicopter joined three other planes that have been combatting fires in South Suma-tra province in the past two weeks.

Intensifying the firefighting efforts is especially necessary in areas that are difficult to reach by land, said Yulizar Dinoto, chief of the provincial disaster mitigation agency.

Haze from peat and forest fires have blanketed the province’s capital Palembang in past days, shortening visibility in the streets to around 100 meters and causing respiratory prob-lems to many residents.

Some 284 hotspots were detected

across Sumatra, most of which were in southern Sumatra, while 17 were in neighboring Riau province, said Su-topo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the national disaster management,.

Neighboring Singapore and Ma-laysia have had increased air pollu-tion, with forest fire haze a possible factor.

The Indonesian Parliament on Tuesday ratified the ASEAN Agree-ment on Trans-boundary Haze Pollu-tion, aiming to make Southeast Asian countries more active in fighting forest fires and haze. Other mem-bers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations signed the agreement in 2002.

Regional haze caused by land clearing in Indonesia was recorded as one of the worst years of the last decade in 2013, prompting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to apologize to his neighbors.

TABANAN - The Bali Butterfly Park is one of the popular attrac-tions in Tabanan County and the only one in this archipelago. This park also makes a breeding of but-terflies for scientific purposes and education in the future.

As the name implies, most of the land is covered by paranet in order the butterflies do not fly out of their collections and disappear. Various species of butterflies in Indonesia can be found here. Some of the well known butter-flies include: butterfly of paradise (Ornithoptera paradisea), the atlas moth (Attacus atlas), Sulawesi butterfly (Papilio gigon), Sumatra butterfly (Atrophaneura nox), Stibociana coressia, Lexias aegle, Axchaeoattacus staud, Butterfly of Mt. Batukaru (Actias maenas), Morphonestira, Amathu siidae sp, and so on.

In addition to butterfly, the park also has a collection of other animals such as scorpions, tarantulas and tiger beetles in a small building on the right side of the flower garden. Similarly, it also has a collection of strange grasshopper in the shape of leaves and twigs of wood brought in from outside Bali.

The park is managed by PT Kupu-kupu Taman Lestari. It spreads across the area of 1 hectare with netting area (closed area with paranet) on 3,700 m3. Each month

the butterfly park releases at least 3,500 butterflies to its original habitat. Besides, the park also pro-duces various kinds of handicraft made of a variety of insects such as: framed butterfly, framed beetle, key chain made from insects, bookmarks insertion, paperweight made of transparent fiber contain-ing butterflies, paintings made of butterfly wings, etc.

Development of the Bali But-terfly Park has been planned since October 1993 after the implementation of International Butterfly Conference held on August 24-27, 1993 in Ujung Pandang (Makassar). Departed from the idea that biological resources in the form of butterfly were very abundant, it would be unfortunate if they went extinct. The park was then opened on December 17, 1996 by Mrs. Asiawati Oka, Chairman of the PKK of Bali Province.

The butterfly park is located on Jalan Batukaru, Sandan Lebah hamlet, Wanasari, exactly 6 km to the north of Tabanan. This park is open every day from 8:00 a.m. through at 5:00 p.m. and the last ticket is sold at 4:00 p.m. Sup-porting facilities available are parking area, art shop combined with cafeteria and restrooms. Bio-diversity must be preserved from the extinction in order it remains stable. Therefore, when you come to Bali, make a visit to this But-terfly Park.

The mere presence of the North Korean team is politically fraught — animosity is high between the Koreas, which are separated by the world’s most heavily armed border and are technically in a state of war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Conspicuously absent from the event are North Korea’s color-ful cheerleading squad, which is made up mostly of women who are trained to dance and sing in unison in support of the nation’s athletes. The cheerleaders have been a big hit abroad — and are particularly popular with South Korean specta-tors — but Pyongyang decided not to send them because it said Seoul handled discussions about the topic

with hostility. According to South Korean reports, Seoul balked at covering their expenses.

Flags had also been a major ob-stacle — though the Asian Games organizers made sure Thursday there would be no repeat of the London Olympics, when organiz-ers raised the South Korean flag for a North Korean women’s soccer match, prompting the North Korean team to walk off the pitch. North Korea flags are now flying outside their apartments at the athletes’ village.

South Korean officials have de-cided to let the North Korean flag be hoisted in stadiums, sports venues and the athletes’ village, in keep-ing with precedent from previous events the North has participated in

— including the 2002 Asian Games in Busan and the 2003 University Games in Daegu. North Korea boy-cotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics, both in Seoul, but has since attended several other major sports events held in the South.

The North’s athletes are already off to a strong start, with both the men and women winning prelimi-nary football matches. Though the games officially begin Friday, the football competition started this week so that it can finish before the games close on Oct. 4. Not all the news is good in the North’s sporting world, however.

On Wednesday, the International Gymnastics Federation ruled a North Korean gymnast had for years competed illegally under a fake passport to hide her true age. It withdrew Cha Yong Hwa’s license and banned her from all interna-tional competition through 2015 and annulled her results dating back to August 2006. That would include two medals she won at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar — a silver in the team event and bronze in uneven bars.

METZ, France — Top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga served 10 aces and saved all five break points to defeat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7), 6-4 at the Moselle Open on Wednesday. Tsonga, who won the title in Metz in 2011 and 2012, was runner-up to fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon last year. He will face eighth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium or German Tobias Kamke in the quarterfinals of the indoor tournament.

Tsonga can still qualify for the ATP finals in London from Nov. 9-16 with a strong finish to the season. The Frenchman won his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title last month in Toronto with a straight-sets win over Roger Federer.

Goffin beat French qualifier Florent Serra 6-2, 6-2 while Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen set up a meeting with former Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz after beating Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1, 6-4. Local favorite Paul-Henri Mathieu joined Tsonga in the quarterfinals as he defeated fourth-seeded Czech Lukas Rosol 6-3, 6-4.

Joao Sousa saved all four break points to beat Ivan Dodig 6-2, 6-2 in the first round while Jeremy Chardy got the better of Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (5), 7-5 in an all-French match. The sixth-seeded Sousa will next play Igor Sijsling.

INCHEON, South Korea — The proper flag was raised, there were smiles for the South Korean break dancers on stage and gifts were warmly exchanged as North Korea’s team was officially welcomed into the athlete’s village at the Asian Games after a series of con-troversies that nearly scuttled their trip. The ceremony took place at Incheon on Thursday for members of North Korea’s 273-strong delegation to the regional mini-Olympics being hosted this year by rival South Korea.

“We had so many chances to score, but we wasted all of them until the last minute. The ball came absolutely perfectly to me and I thought to myself, this one I will hit into the roof of the net and that’s what I did,” the defender said after scoring against his former side. It was looking like goalkeeper Joe Hart’s inspired performance would be enough to salvage a draw for the Premier League side, which went closest through David Silva’s fly-ing header wide of the post in the 63rd minute.

“We fought hard all night against a good team and we had chances all

night. We knew we were going to be in for a tough game,” Hart said. “The goal’s come from a deflection in the end, and Jerome has come back to haunt us.” City substitute Sergio Aguero came close to equal-izing in injury time, only to poke the ball wide under pressure from Bayern ‘keeper Manuel Neuer.

It was the third meeting in four seasons between the sides, with Bayern avenging defeat at home to the City in their final group game last December, when the English side ended the 2013 champion’s competition record ten-game win-ning run. In the group’s other game,

Roma defeated CSKA Moscow 5-1 in Rome.

Thomas Mueller, Robert Lewan-dowski and David Alaba all had good chances in a frustrating first half for Bayern, but Hart thwarted their efforts with a series of brilliant stops. “The goal is the most difficult part of the game, to score a score. It’s not easy to create so many chances,” Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. “We tried, and deserved the victory. We know how difficult the group is and a victory for the start is very, very important for us.”

Mueller almost gave the home side a dream start when Lewan-

dowski played him through in the first minute, but he only hit the side netting after rounding the goalkeeper. “As long as the team wins, I’ll lie in bed tonight with a smile,” Mueller said about his missed chances. City finally enjoyed some possession after Bayern bossed the opening minutes, and Edin Dzeko tested Neuer at the near post in the 13th.

The Bosnian striker, familiar to fans from his time at Bundesliga ri-val Wolfsburg, was to be a thorn in Bayern’s side until his replacement in the 74th by Aguero. Dzeko’s curled shot whizzed past the far post and again went close in the 29th minute. Sandwiched between his two efforts, Hart again came to the rescue for City with Mueller and Goetze denied. David Alaba fired narrowly wide, and then drew another stop from Hart, who was relieved to see the rebound

elude a number of waiting Bayern players.

Lewandowski then hit the side netting in a similar manner to Muel-ler. After rounding the goalkeeper he failed to net and those frustra-tions grew for the home side in the second half.

Bayern had a penalty appeal waved away when Bacary Sagna appeared to impede Mehdi Benatia, who was making his competitive debut following his move from Roma for a 26 million euro ($34 million) in the offseason.

Silva went dangerously close with his header from Jesus Navas’ cross and Bayern needed the ex-perience of Xabi Alonso to mop up the danger as nerves began to set in late on. There were penalty claims at either end for Robben and Silva, but Boateng was to have the final say.

AMSTERDAM — Lasse Schone scored from a 74th-minute free kick to cancel out an early Edinson Cavani strike as Ajax salvaged a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in their opening match in the Champions League. The star-studded Paris team paid the price for failing to extend its lead despite outclassing Ajax for most of the Group F match on a warm evening at the Amsterdam Arena. In the end, the French club will have been pleased with a point after weathering a torrid late offensive by Frank de Boer’s young team.

Cavani hammered in a re-bound in the 14th minute after Joel Veltman blocked a shot by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. PSG then squandered a string of chances before Schone’s free kick beat Salvatore Sirigu. The Denmark midfielder nearly stole the three points for Ajax a few minutes later with another free kick, but Sirigu got down well to his left to parry the ball onto the post. “Given the second half, I think

we deserved more,” Schone said.

PSG’s stars, including three former Ajax players in Ibrahi-movic, Gregory van der Wiel and Maxwell, barely broke a sweat in the first half, but still went into the break 1-0 up without allow-ing their host a single shot on target. De Boer’s team looked vulnerable down the left and it was Nicolai Boilesen’s mistake that led to Cavani’s goal.

The Ajax left back slipped in his own penalty area, allowing Lucas to steal the ball and pull it back to Ibrahimovic. The Swe-den striker’s shot was blocked on the line by Veltman, but Ca-vani was on hand to pounce on the rebound. Lucas should have doubled PSG’s lead in the first minute of the second half when he dispossessed Ajax captain Niklas Moisander but shot wide with only goalkeeper Jasper Cil-lessen to beat.

De Boer pulled off the ineffec-tive Nick Viergever at halftime and replaced him with Denmark midfielder Niki Zimling, who almost immediately made his presence felt with a long-range

shot that sailed just over Sirigu’s goal.

Despite the Ajax pressure, it was PSG who looked the more dangerous, with Ibrahimovic coming close in the 52nd minute with a shot that flashed across the face of the goal and just wide. Ibrahimovic set Lucas free six minutes later with an inch-perfect first time pass, but Cillessen dived to his right to save the shot.

Defender Marquinhos came even closer to extending PSG’s lead in the 67th when his header went just wide from a Lucas free kick. “We had good chances for the 2-0, but generally it was Ajax that made the running,” Van der Wiel said. But from then on it was all Ajax, with Schone’s goal after a foul on Thulani Serero ushering in a period of sustained pressure that just failed to deliver a winner.

De Boer said a draw was all his team deserved. “If you see the first half and how we gave away a 100-percent chance straight after the break, you have to be happy with a draw,” the Ajax coach said.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil coach Dunga called up Robinho on Wednes-day for the team’s friendly matches against Argentina and Japan next month. The striker had been left out of Dunga’s team for friendlies earlier this month against Colombia and Ecuador but was later added to the squad after Hulk got injured. Brazil will play Ar-gentina on Oct. 11 at the Bird’s Nest in Beijing and Japan three days later in Singapore.

The match against Argentina is dubbed the Superclassic of the Ameri-cas, which is organized annually by CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America. Brazil won it in 2011 and 2012. Last year’s match was not played after a request from the Brazilian confederation. This is the first time the contest will be

played in a single match instead of a two-leg series.

Only two players who were not in the squad earlier this month were called up this time — right back Mario Fernandes of CSKA Moscow and left back Dodo of Inter Milan. Defender Thiago Silva, coming off injury, was not called up again. “We know of his quality, at the right time he will be back,” Dunga said.

The matches in Asia will mark Brazil’s third and fourth matches since Dunga’s return to the helm of the na-tional team after a disappointing World Cup under Luiz Felipe Scolari on home soil. Brazil finished fourth after a 7-1 loss to Germany in the semifinals and a 3-0 defeat against the Netherlands in the third-place match. Brazil beat Colombia 1-0 and Ecuador by the same score earlier this month in friendlies in the United States.

SEOUL — Western Sydney Wanderers held FC Seoul to a 0-0 draw Wednesday in the first leg of the Asian Champions League semifinals. Seoul, the 2013 runner-up, had the better of the opportunities but struggled to find a way through the Aus-tralian backline. Spanish-born Japanese striker Sergio Escudero went closest for the two-time K-League champion, wasting a one-on-one opportunity in the first half, shooting wide from the edge of the area.

Western Sydney beat de-fending champion Guangzhou Evergrande in the quarterfinals but apart from a succession of

corners, rarely threatened Seoul’s goal in the absence of suspended forwards Tomi Juric and Brendon Santalab and utility Shannon Cole. The hosts came close to snatching a late winner but failed to convert during a period of sustained pressure.

“We wanted to win the home leg,” Seoul coach Choi Yong-soo said.. “We made many opportu-nities to score but our decision-making in front of goal was lack-ing. There is still the second leg and we are a team that is capable of scoring away from home.” The second leg is scheduled for Oct. 1 in Parramatta when the Wanderers, making their debut in the continental championship, will have the likes of Santalab

and Juric back and will be aiming to become the second Australian club to reach the final — Adelaide United was runner-up in 2008.

“The last 20 minutes were tough but... it is a satisfactory result,” Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said. “A look at our record in this competition shows that we are strong at home.” Wanderers captain Nikolai To-por-Stanley said his team was growing in confidence ahead of the home leg.

“A clean sheet away from home, I’ll take that any day,” he said. “I think it will be a whole different ball game at Parramatta. These clubs in Asian aren’t used to travelling 10 hours to Aus-tralia.”

ZURICH — World Cup winner Germany is still No. 1 in the FIFA rankings despite losing to second-place Argentina in a friendly rematch of their final this month. Colombia climbs one place to No. 3 even though it lost to Brazil in a friendly, and trades places with the Nether-lands which lost both its matches this month.

Belgium stays at No. 5 and Brazil climbs one spot to No. 6. Uruguay is No. 7, followed by Spain. France and Switzerland, which lost to England in a European Championship qualifier, trade places to complete the top 10.

Costa Rica is ahead of Mexico and the United States, with the three

CONCACAF nations grouped from Nos. 15-17. England climbs two spots to No. 18. Algeria leads African nations at No. 20, up four. Iran also rises four as the top Asian nation at No. 44.

Tried-and-true designers like Gucci opened up five days of womenswear previews for next spring and summer, alongside some hot, young tal-

firm leg up in recent seasons as Italy’s fashion city has sought to energize the moda Milanese with new names.

said on Thursday. According to him, the coopera-

tives have contributed in overcom-ing the threats of crisis in the world, such as energy, food, and global warming.

Nurdin said the cooperatives around the world must continue to grow, so they can address the needs of a global population of 7.2 billion.

Nature’s natural resources have

declined in quality and quantity. In addition, nature’s carrying capacity of living beings has declined. Dur-ing the last hundred years, the Earth has been damaged due to exploita-tion of nature without conservation, he noted.

“During the last hundred years, countries with low conflict stress have been influenced by the rapid growth of cooperatives, for ex-ample, the European countries,”

Nurdin said. The multilateral-scale event

(kmb21)

The Head of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Su-jana, acknowledged on Wednesday that many travelers were protesting against the condition. Though under renovation, his party decided that Kertha Gosa tourist attraction re-mained open from the east entrance for travelers because there were

some other attractions inside, such as the Main Entrance and Semara-jaya Museum. Sujana admitted that many travelers coming to Kertha Gosa actually wanted to see the uniqueness of the historical painting. However, he asked the travelers to understand because the rehabilita-tion was still under progress.

“Indeed, there is a protest, but we’ve already described it. The painting is not lost. Actually, this rehabilitation is also to preserve the historical painting so that it will not be damaged due to the leaking roof,” he said. Actually, he had announced to tourist guides and travel agencies that Kertha Gosa was under process of rehabilitation. However, travelers remained to come. The Tourism Of-fice accidentally did not close the Kertha Gosa because travelers also wanted to see the Main Entrance and Semarajaya Museum other than the historical paintings.

Rehabilitation of the Kertha Gosa was financed through regional budget

2014 worth IDR 704 million through the capital of construction procure-ment or purchase of historical build-ing. The rehabilitation project had been carried out since August 1 by PT Suri Mas Perkasa worked on for 120 days. It was done with great caution where the historical paintings were removed one by one from the ceiling in the two main buildings. Hundreds of pieces of the paintings on display were not painted on canvas, but on hard materials like asbestos. The paintings were removed from the northeast to the south.

“Storyline of the painting starts from that direction. So, to remove them must be in sequence,” he said.

Some of those paintings were in damaged condition due to aging and weather. Moreover, the roof has been leaking for quite a long time. The damaged painting would be replaced with similar painting, both in terms of the material and the story. After securing the paint-ings, the demolition was begun to the structure and roof.

Throughout the year 2013, Ker-tha Gosa was visited by 54,745 travelers. It was the third largest af-ter the tourism area of Nusa Penida reaching 185,909 travelers and Goa Lawah Temple (55,308 people) of the total tourist arrivals reaching 298,979 people. (kmb31)

SEMARAPURA - After dismantling the Taman Gili at Kertha Gosa tourist attraction, now is the turn for Kertha Gosa to be dismantled for improvement. Seeing the condition, foreign trav-elers were disappointed because they could not see the beauty of the historical and classical painting of Kamasan style, which previously were stuck on the ceiling of the two main buildings.
