Mila Kunis named Esquire’s sexiest woman alive

Mila Kunis leads a pretty charmed life. The 29-year-old has a full slate of feature films coming out in 2013, gets to spend her free time with boyfriend Ashton Kutcher, and now, can go to her grave saying that she was, at one point, the sexiest woman alive.

Thousands march to protest austerity cuts in Spain

Based on information compiled by Bali Post from the community around the Ngurah Rai Grand For-est Park area who did not want to be named said that PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari had got an official permit from the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Con-

servation with the decree No. 77/IV-SET/2012 dated May 9, 2012 concerning the tourism utilization approval plan for PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari at the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park Block Utilization area for the period of 2012 -2067. It also got the decree of Bali Governor No.

1051/03-L/HK/2012 dated June 27, 2012 on the granting of permit for nature tourism utilization in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park block at the area spreading across 102.22 hectares.

Information about the mangrove forest that would be managed by investor in fact surprised the House. “Previously, we in the House did not know anything about it. Any coopera-tion made with investors should be done transparently, not secretly like this,” regretted the commissioner of Commission III of Bali House, Ida Bagus Gede Udiyana, Friday (Oct 5) when asked for his information.

He also regretted there was no information from the Bali For-

estry Agency and the Bali Envi-ronment Agency (BLH) whereas on Wednesday (Oct 3) was held a working meeting related to the defeat of Bali Government in the High Court regarding the case of the annexation of two hectares of mangrove forests in the Grand For-est Park by Bali Siki Jimbaran.

“We had a meeting with the Forestry Agency on Wednesday, but why it was not revealed?” he complained. This Golkar Party politician added the mangrove forests played an important role in maintaining the ecological bal-ance. Therefore, if tourism facilities would be built in the area it should not even damage it. The environ-

mental impact assessment (Amdal) should also be seriously considered and how far the management of investor was considered visible. “When involving investors, there should be a sharpening on the contract agreement. Do not let if it even destroys the mangrove forests. We in the House should also be involved as a form of accountabil-ity to the public if it will result in a problem later on,” he said while adding that he would check it.

Udiyana also asked the surround-ing community not to be easily swayed by promises if it would not met by investors. By all means, it would only harm the community.

Sustainability of totally 102 hectares of mangrove forest in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura) at Suwung Kauh, South Denpasar is at risk. A number of tourism facilities will be built by the investor PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari for the development of eco-tourism in the area.

DENPASAR - Sustainability of totally 102 hectares of man-grove forest in the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura) at Suwung Kauh, South Denpasar is at risk. A number of tourism facilities will be built by the investor PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari for the development of eco-tourism in the area. Remarkably, the investor easily gets the permit from the Ministry of Forestry and the Governor’s Decree. Even, the Bali House did not know about the issue.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Bali is situated east of Java Island having access within easy reach, either by land, sea, or air. With such an easy access, this island is then popularly chosen as a favorite tourist destination. Aside from several amazing beaches, Balinese culture can also be taken advantage as an endless tourist attraction because many temples retain very high cultural values. In addition, Bali is also delighted to offer natural attractions in the form of mountain and terraced rice fields resembling a verdant overlay of rug.

One of the convenient locations situating among the rice field, jungle and mountainous gorges is Ubud. It is an appropriate sojourn and destination located in the region of Gianyar Regency. Here you can find a unique resort offering the indigenous Balinese concept highlighting the harmonious relationship of human to environment, fellow humans and the Creator, namely the Waka di Ume Resort and Spa.

Many fascinating attractions can be encountered here, ranging from relishing the natural atmosphere up to learn-ing the native cultures. “Here, we also invite our guests to appreciate the natural environment, cultural and social life of the Ubud community,” said I Wayan Duartha, General Manager of the Waka di Ume Resort and Spa. With such

various activities, many tourists were attracted to stay at Waka.

A variety of facilities have been provided to support the comfort and satisfaction of every single guest. Waka di Ume Resort and Spa established on November 5, 1995 has 18 rooms, consisting of 3-bedroom Wapa Villa with private pool, 2-bedroom Family Villa with private pool, Villa with Pool, Di Ume Suite, Terrace Villa and the smallest one is the Lanai Terrace. Room rates of the Waka di Ume Resort and Spa ranges from USD 244 to USD 655. Such rates have included government tax, service and breakfast.

More interestingly, the Waka di Ume Resort and Spa lies very close to the natural and cultural attractions. Among others, they are monkey forest, art museums, Goa Gajah, Ceking rice terrace, Tirta Empul temple at Tampaksiring, Tampaksiring Presidential Palace, and Petulu village be-coming the native and convenient home to thousands of white egrets.

One day, if you want to make a visit to the island, es-pecially when would like to luxuriate in the countryside ambience with five star facilities, look no further and decide on the Waka di Ume Resort and Spa as your serene sojourn on the island. IBP/File Photo

Negara (Bali Post)—Improvement to Negara public square facility has been recently abused by

young people who often hang out at night. Since this week, a number of sup-porting facilities in the city park have been damaged whereas the construction of those supporting facilities in the public square was just completed within less than two months.

From the observation on Friday (Oct 5), a number of facilities such as the con-crete round table and lamppost were broken. Allegedly, the facilities were marred by people hanging out at night, but another allegation emerged if the framework material was indeed not strong. For instance, the neck of round table fractured as it was suspected to be not strong enough to support the concrete table. As seen last Friday, the buffer section was only reinforced by two small irons. The broken table was not only one, but two tables respectively located in the northwest and northeast corner of the square that had just been renovated.

According to surrounding residents, the facilities were broken about a week ago. Other than the table, the lighting facilities were also damaged. Therefore, it was always dark at night though the lamps had been installed. “The lamps have not flared yet. Indeed many young people are hanging out at night and every morning a lot of rubbishes scattered about,” said a resident found at location. Allegedly, the location was abused at night as a place to drink because every morning the newly constructed bathroom was usually full of vomit and not splashed.

Probably, the round table broke because it was occupied by people as was not strong enough to prop. “At night until dawn, many young people are hanging out there,” said another resident. There was no guard since the establishment of the building. The project worth IDR 99.5 million was undertaken by CV Lumbung Suadan last June 2012 and completed within the period of 60 days.

On the other hand, the Head of Jembrana Environment, Sanitation and Land-scaping Agency (LHKP), Made Widana, told reporters last Saturday that his party had known the damage to the facility. He reminded the contractor to repair the damage since the project was still under its responsibility. (kmb26)

This matter was revealed by the Head of Denpasar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Ketut Wisada, Friday (Oct 5). “Although the socialization has been per-formed continuously, people seem to still think if the waste is squalid, so that they are less interesting to manage,” said Wisada.

He said if the process from col-lecting, sorting to processing was carried out in accordance with the type of waste it would certainly give an economic value. For that purpose, his party continued to socialize by involving the entire community. “We expect in 2013 the community processing the waste to increase to seven per-cent,” hoped Wisada.

When the public was increas-ingly concerned about the waste processing, he said, the waste disposed to landfill would de-crease. In addition, through the independent waste management in the community, the threat of environmental pollution could be reduced. “We have also so-cialized in order the community reduces the use of plastic for packaging,” he said.

Wisada expected people to use the eco-friendly product packaging. High use of plastic would trigger the increasingly severe environmental pollution. In addition, his party also invited the public to sort the waste in each household.

On the other hand, the Head-man of Peguyangan, I Wayan Yusswara, said the socialization of waste processing also involved the lowest village apparatus, namely the hamlet chief. His party also motivated people starting from the hamlet chief and chief of custom-ary village to pay more attention to the waste problems.

Peguyangan village itself, he said, had processed the waste independently. Such independent waste management could be seen along the Jalan A. Yani constantly cleaned up. “Essentially, we do expect the role of community, es-pecially at Peguyangan village to take care of the waste problems,” expected Yusswara. (kmb12)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Culprits of the windshield shattering apparently remain at large. As evidence,

the car belonging to Elora Hardi, 31, from Canada was shattered by criminals on Thursday (Oct 4). As a result, total cash worth IDR 15 million was taken away. This case had been reported to Kuta Police and the culprits were still chased by police.

Such windshield shattering took place in front of the Indostone on Jalan Sunset Road, Seminyak, Kuta. Earlier, the victim came to the scene to purchase a stone to build her house in Ubud area. Her Toyota Fortuner with license plate DK 630 KM was parked at the scene. Before leaving the car, the woman serving as commissioner of PT Bamboo Pure did not forget to lock all the car doors.

Unfortunately, a number of valuables such as bags containing a wallet, driving license C, A, BII debit card, BCA debit card, and Che Bank credit card, house keys, motorcycle keys and bank tokens were left in the car. In addition, a laptop bag containing a Mac, little black books, blackboards and orange monocular were also placed in the car. While choosing stones for about 15 minutes, the victim returned to her car.

How surprised she was when seeing her car window was shattered. As she was sure it was committed by irresponsible person, the victim checked her stuff. In fact, the stuff in her car really vanished without a trace. “The victim had asked local people. However, they did not see the culprits shattering the car,” said an officer in the Denpasar Metro Police, Friday (Oct 5).

The case was reported to Kuta Police to be addressed further. After the crime, the officers of Kuta Police and Denpasar Metro Police came to the scene to inves-tigate. Crime scene and witness examination were performed. However, until now the culprits of windshield shattering were unknown. “The case has been handled by Kuta Police. They are still investigating the case,” said the officer whose name was not known. (kmb21)

Only a few communities managing waste independentlyDenpasar (Bali Post)—

The volume of waste in the city of Denpasar continues to increase every day. At least, Denpasar produces about 2,700 cubic meters of waste per day. Most of the wastes are disposed to Suwung landfill because the people who manage the waste only reach two percent of the Denpasar population.

“My top candidate has never won, and it’s the fourth year I do it now,” admitted Norwegian peace researcher Kristian Harp-viken, one of the most prominent voices in the annual guessing game for the Nobel Peace Prize.

A week ahead of that an-nouncement, the Irish online betting agency Paddy Power gave the lowest odds Friday to retired American scholar Gene Sharp, Afghan women’s rights activist Sima Samar and Tunisian blogger Lina Ben Mhenni. All have been among Harpviken’s top picks in recent years.

Harpviken, who heads the PRIO peace institute in Oslo, admits his speculation is just that — speculation — based on current events, previous prizes and personal preference.

NEW YORK — The two kinds of fungus linked to a meningitis outbreak are found in plenty of places and rarely make people sick. People inhale one kind, Aspergillus, all the time without any problem. It’s nearly impossible to avoid, found in such places as decaying leaves, trees, grain, soil, household dust, heating ducts and building materials. The fungus can also cause skin infections if it enters a break in the skin.

The second kind, Exserohilum, is found in grass and rotting wood. When it causes disease, it’s most commonly skin infection or inflam-mation in the sinuses.

Both were detected this week in patients with meningitis that oc-curred after a contaminated steroid was injected into the spinal column of some patients getting pain treat-ments. That provides a rapid way for fungus to cause a serious infec-tion. It’s not clear how the fungi got into the medication which was made by a specialty pharmacy.

Usually, after somebody in-

By burning wood, humans have been significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions as far back as the Roman Empire, researchers say. The finding may lead scientists to rethink some aspects of climate change models, which assume humans weren’t responsible for much greenhouse gas before the Industrial Revolution.

“It was believed that emissions started in 1850. We showed that hu-mans already started to impact greenhouse effects much before,” study co-author Célia Sapart of Utretcht University in the Netherlands said.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with 20 times the warming power of carbon dioxide, Sapart told LiveScience. Forest fires, wetlands and volcanic eruptions naturally release methane into the atmosphere. But human actions, such as raising cattle or burning fossil fuel, now account for more than half of the methane released.

To see how far back humans were producing significant amounts of methane, Sapart and her colleagues analyzed ice cores from Greenland. Tiny air bubbles trapped in the ice provide a perfect snapshot of the atmosphere thousands of years ago: The fraction of heavy and light carbon isotopes (atoms of the same element but with different numbers of neutrons) inside these air bubbles can not only reveal atmospheric levels of methane but tell researchers whether the gas came from forest fires, wetlands or other sources.

In their Oct. 3 study detailed in the journal Nature, the researchers found that methane production was high around 100 B.C., during the heyday of the Roman Empire, and waned around A.D. 200 as the empire faltered. The methane was released when Romans burned down forest to clear land for crops and expanding settlements, Sapart said.

STOCKHOLM — Guessing who will win a Nobel Prize is a bit like forecasting the stock market: Experts don’t seem to do it any better than laymen. So if you hear professors and pun-dits predicting the “God particle” will be the theme of the physics prize next week, or that an American writer — finally — is due for the literature award, check their track record.

about,” he said. “I would be very hesitant to speculate on a certain candidate who is absolutely un-deserving.” The secretive prize committees rarely drop any hints and Harpviken doesn’t have any inside information. Virtually none of the Nobel guess-makers do — but that doesn’t stop them from trying.

The peace and literature prizes generate the strongest buzz, and are typically less difficult to predict than the awards for chemistry, physics, medicine and economics.

The six award committees will announce one prize a day, starting with medicine on Monday and ending with the economics award on Oct. 15. The Nobel Founda-tion this year lowered the prize money 20 percent to 8 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million), citing turmoil on financial mar-kets. All prizes will be handed

It would have been easier to guess the winners if the Nobel committees had stuck to the will of the Swedish industrialist, who wanted the annual awards to re-flect the greatest achievements “during the preceding year.” Instead, the Nobel statutes were changed so that committees can reward discoveries made decades ago, to make sure they have stood the test of time. “I think Alfred would have been OK with that,” said Per Carlson, a former chairman of the physics prize committee.

hales Aspergillus spores, they’re destroyed by the body. But people with cystic fibrosis or asthma may have problems with it, wheez-ing and coughing. A more severe infection can arise in people with weakened immune systems, like those who’ve had transplant surgery or are getting chemotherapy for

cancer. This invasive infection can cause fever, chest pain and short-ness of breath.

Neither of those conditions spreads from person to person. It’s hard to tell exactly how common Aspergillus infections are, but one study suggests it may affect just 1 or 2 people per 100,000 every year.

IBPCANGGU – Day 2 of the 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships

Bali saw the ladies hit the water for their opening round of competition today. Three foot (1.5 meter) right handers peeled down the reef at Echo Beach, Canggu, providing the perfect canvas for the women to battle to be the first ASP Women’s World Junior Champion to be crowned in Indonesia.

Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) was clinical in her attack on the waves at Canggu today, amassing the day’s highest two wave heat-total - 18.10 (out of a pos-sible 20). Buitendag is in red hot form, fresh from a win at the last ASP 6-Star event of the season and securing a coveted spot in the elite ASP Women’s World Championship Tour for 2013.

“I’m feeling really good at the moment,” Buitendag said. “We just had three events back-to-back in Europe and I won one and I qualified for the WCT, so being in Bali is like a holiday for me. I’ve got no pressure, it’s a similar format to the WCT events I’ll be in next year so I’m just going to have fun and see what happens.”

Leila Hurst (HAW), reigning ASP Women’s World Junior Champion started her title defence campaign with a Round 1 win. The heat was close and all three surfers held the lead at different stages, but it was Hurst who finished the heat with an impressive ride getting an 8.33 (out of a possible 10) to take top honours.

“I try not to think about being the defending ASP World Junior Champion,” Hurst said. “I get really nervous when I think about it so I’m just trying to put it out of my mind. It was really fun out there, but tricky at the same time. The conditions were changing every minute and I was lucky to get a good one at the end.”

Philippa Anderson (AUS) punctuated her impressive Round 1 victory with a near perfect 9.50 (out of a possible 10), for a series of fast, powerful and progressive turns. Anderson is the event’s number 2 seed and today she showed why she’ll be one to watch as the event ticks on.

“I had fun out there,” Anderson said. “There wasn’t always a lot of waves coming through, but I managed to find a couple. The first heat at any contest is always nerve racking, especially at this event because it’s the only shot at the ASP World Junior Title. I love Bali and I’m stoked to be here, so I just think about the fun side and it takes the pressure off.”

Nikki Van Dijk (AUS), the 2012 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series Champion was one of the day’s top performers. Van Dijk didn’t miss a beat as she snapped, carved and floated her way to the second highest two wave heat-total of the day - 17.27 (out of a possible 20).

“This is my first time in Bali and I’m loving it,” Van Dijk said. “I came here straight from some contests in Europe and it was a long trip, so it feels good to win that heat and start off well.”

Alessa Quizon (HAW) took out the final heat of the day after laying down some powerful backhand carves, she will advance directly into Round 3 alongside Quincy Davis (USA). Surfers who finish third will have to battle it out in the elimination Round 2.

The event was officially opened by the Vice Regent of Karangas-em, I Made Sukarena and attended by the officers in Karangasem Re-gency, the people and also tourists from throughout the world.

The event was held to develop tourism in Karangasem. “Even tough the price is small but the event which is sponsored by Japan could promote Tulamben through-out the world,” said Sukarena.

He added that all tourism busi-nessmen in Tulemben should take part in the event. This is because the Jukung Race is a great tool for promotion. “Next year, the committee should invite more participants such as the fisher-men group from Bunutan through

Baturinggit. If many participants take part in the event than it will be a better competition,” Sukarena explained.

The President Director of Equal, Okomoto Shintoro as the main sponsor of the event, said that the Jukung Race is the form of support to the fishermen in Bali. Even tough he don’t stay in Bali but the businessman who gained success through All From Boats in Japan is willingly spend his time and money in he event.

Tulemben Jukung Race itself is started by Thomas T. Inoue since 2000 and has become an-nual event ever since. Meanwhile, the advisor for the race, I Nengah Mukra Widnyana said that the

event which was pioneered by Emerald Tulamben Resort & Spa is carried out to raise the spirit of the fishermen.

In addition to compete, the event is also could give entertain-ment to the tourists and the locals and also raise awareness about conserving the beach. “Through the jukung race, we would like to promote Tulamben,” he said.

Mukra who is also the Opera-tional Manager Emerald Tulam-ben Resort & Spa added that the event is also to urge the fishermen to take part in developing tourism in Karangasem. “Through the event, there is great hope that the beach will be more famous in the world,” Mukra said. (kmb)

ATHENS — A mock cannon on a Greek tour boat exploded Saturday, killing the captain and injuring six tourists off the island of Kos, authorities said.

The Merchant Marine Ministry said the tourists from Germany, Belgium, Greece and the Nether-lands — including two children, aged 7 and 9 — were hospitalized on the east Aegean Sea island with minor injuries. Twenty two other passengers on board all disem-barked unharmed at the island port of Mandraki.

The extent of damage caused by the explosion remained un-clear. The ministry said the wooden boat was used for excur-sions around the island and had been fitted with the mock cannon to resemble a small pirate ship. It wasn’t immediately clear if gunpowder was used to simulate cannon fire.

Mark Basseley Youssef, 55, who before went by the name Nakoula Basseley Nak-oula, is scheduled to go before U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder on Wednesday, the documents filed on Friday in U.S. District Court show.

The terms of Youssef’s 2011 release from prison include a ban on using aliases without the permission of a probation officer.

The Egyptian-born Youssef has been de-scribed as the producer of a crudely made 13-minute video filmed in California and circulated online under a number of titles, including “Innocence of Muslims.” It mocked the Prophet Mohammad and sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Egypt and other

Muslim countries last month. The U.S. Marshals Service arrested

Youssef on September 27 and took him be-fore a federal judge that day for a hearing held amid tight security at which prosecu-tors accused him of violating the terms of his probation.

A judge that day ordered him held without bail, and a federal prison official later con-firmed he was taken to a high-rise federal jail in downtown Los Angeles.

The defendant, who had worked in the gas station industry, declared at the outset of his last hearing that he had changed his name to Mark Basseley Youssef in 2002 from his pre-vious name of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

While previous court documents referred to him as Nakoula, the latest court papers from Friday name him as Youssef. He most recently lived in a suburb of Los Angeles.

An actress, Cindy Lee Garcia, who ap-peared briefly in the clip, has accused him in a federal lawsuit of making the film under the alias Sam Bacile. Garcia has said she thought she was working on a historical adventure film and did not know it had anything to do with Mohammad.

Other people who appeared in or worked on the film have made similar claims.

Federal authorities have stressed that they are not investigating the film over its content, but Youssef’s arrest has led to some criticism from free speech advocates.

Prosecutors did not specify which terms of Youssef’s 2011 conditional release he is suspected of violating, but they said he had used aliases and that they could seek to have him sent to prison for up to 24 months if a judge finds he violated his probation.

Gianyar (Bali Post)—

Bali will host the World Culture for De-velopment Forum (WCF) in November 2013. The international event is organized consider-ing Indonesia is a country being rich in the arts and culture. Ministry of Education and Culture will focus the event on November 24-29, 2013.

Deputy Minister of Education and Culture in charge of Cultural Affairs, Prof. Wiendu Nuryanti, Ph.D., in the cultural congregation held at Rudana Museum, Ubud, Saturday (Oct 6) said the idea emerged considering that Indonesia was rich in the arts and culture. On that account, Indonesia would show off to the world that this country wanted to take an active role in giving contribution in the field of culture.

The forum would not only discuss about cultural matters. Some other topics would also be discussed in the forum, such as the youth

forums, economic forums and cultural busi-ness, gender forum and other forums related to cultural field.

The forum would be attended by several heads of state from 40 countries invited. A number of world leaders winning the Nobel Prize would also be invited to be a speaker in the forum, she said.

Nuryanti hoped the forum would be able to yield solutions or policies to address the issues related to culture, including the copyright is-sues of a culture. Hopefully, there would also be contribution given by the synergy of the government and society.

Meanwhile, the President of The Rudana doubling as Chairman of the Association of the Indonesian Museum, Putu Supadma Rudana, said he appreciated the implementa-tion of such a cultural event. “We welcome this event. Hopefully, this event can bring in benefits to Balinese culture and economy,” he said. (kmb16)

According to General Manager of Pelindo III Benoa, Iwan Sabatini, who also attended the event, Indonesia had the opportunity to bring in the cruise ships from the activity. “In the future, the cruise ship tourists will become the opportunity that must be worked on optimally,” he said on Friday (Oct 5).

Furthermore, Iwan said the cruise

ship traffic in Indonesia in 2013 would be predicted to reach 300 with passengers reaching 160,000 people, so that indicated an increase of 40 percent from this year. With the increase in cruise ship visits to In-donesia and intensive promotion of Bali in that event, the Benoa Harbor was expected to be one of the main

destinations. “There is a great pos-sibility for cruise ship tourists com-ing to Indonesia to visit the Benoa Harbor,” he said. Further, he also said the increase in cruise ship tourist arrivals to Bali was believed to give multiplier effect for Bali tourism in terms of tourism labor, logistics, food provision and enhancement of Bali’s image.

In welcoming the arrival of the cruise ship tourists, Iwan hoped relevant parties such as the Tourism Agency and Transportation Agency to prepare all the supporting infra-structures, primarily involving the

smoothness on the highway as well as the aspects of tourist destinations in Bali. Meanwhile, Benoa Harbor itself would also continue to clean up and complete a number of facilities includ-ing the preparation of Benoa Harbor into a ‘Turnaround Port’ scheduled to be worked on later this year.

By becoming a ‘Turnaround Port,’ there would be the turn of the passen-gers in the harbor either embarkation or disembarkation so that it would boost the number of tourists. In that regard, his party was conducting an extension of dock, terminal expan-sion, construction of a transit point

for traveler suitcases, widening and deepening of ponds and ship groove. With these efforts, he expected the ship could berth more easily. “With these efforts, the Benoa Harbor can also be berthed by larger ships,” he said.

Regarding the cruise ship visit to Benoa Harbor this year, Iwan said his party targeted 38 cruise ships. Until now, it had achieved 28 cruise ship visits. Meanwhile, in 2013 would be targeted to achieve 40 cruise ships. Iwan had confidence the target of this year and next year could be achieved, especially if the Benoa Harbor had be-come a ‘Turnaround Port.’ (kmb29)

DETROIT — Honda Motor Co. is recalling CR-V crossovers from the 2002 to 2006 model years because an electrical switch in the driver’s side door could melt and cause a fire.

Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall Saturday.

The problem involves around 268,000 vehicles. Honda said rain or other liquids could enter through a driver’s open window and damage the master power switch on the door. If that happens, the switch could overheat and melt, causing a fire.

NHTSA said owners should park CR-Vs from those model years outside until the recall is per-formed to avoid any property damage from a fire. A fire could start even when the ignition is off and the CR-V is parked.

Honda agreed that concerned owners should park their CR-Vs away from structures that could burn. But spokesman Ed Miller emphasized that a switch is unlikely to catch fire unless someone spilled liquid on it or let a large amount of rain into the vehicle through the driver’s side window.

Honda said owners have reported four fires but no injuries or crashes associated with the issue.

The company will begin contacting owners next month and will repair the vehicles for free. Honda

will install a cover plate inside the switch to prevent any liquid from coming in, Miller said.

It was the third major recall this week for the Japanese automaker, which usually sits near the top in J.D. Power and Associates’ annual rankings of vehicle quality. Earlier this week, the company said it was recalling 820,000 Civic compact and Pilot SUVs from the 2002 through 2004 model years because the headlights can fail. CR-Vs were recalled earlier this spring for that same issue.

Honda also said this week that it’s recalling 600,000 Accord midsize cars because a faulty power steering house can leak and cause a fire. That recall affects Accords with V6 engines from the 2003 to 2007 model years.

NHTSA also announced earlier this week that it’s investigating complaints that Honda Odyssey minivans and Pilot SUVs can roll away after drivers remove the ignition key. That investigation involves vehicles from the 2003 and 2004 model years.

Also Saturday, the government announced a re-call of 44,300 Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks from the 2009 and 2010 model years. The trucks have a nut that could loosen on the rear axle, causing drivers to lose control of their vehicles. The government and Chrysler Group LLC said there have been 15 reports of rear axle failure and three minor injuries related to the issue.

Marching under banners reading “Neither cuts nor privatizations,” many protesters were civil servants hit with a wage freeze next year.

Spain is experiencing its sec-ond recession in three years, is burdened with an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent and social unrest is on the rise. The number of people registered unemployed rose to 4.71 million in September as the tourism season ended and businesses let workers go.

“I work in a hospital, but I’m about to end up unemployed,” 58-

year-old nurse Victoria Gutierrez said. “On Oct. 30, my temporary contract will finish and it won’t be extended. “We have minimum cover on every floor at every hos-pital,” she said. “This is affecting not just hospitals, also education and civil services, everything.”

The government has pushed through nine straight months of tough austerity measures which have prompted Spain’s 17 regional governments, some of which are heavily indebted, to slash spending in health care and education.

DENPASAR — Two British citizens have gone on trial for al-legedly trafficking cocaine onto Indonesia’s popular resort island of Bali. Both could face the death penalty if found guilty.

Fifty-six-year-old Lindsay Sandiford was arrested in May when customs officers at Bali’s airport discovered 3.8 kilograms (8.4 pounds) of cocaine worth $2.5 million stuffed into her luggage.

Her suspected accomplice, forty-seven-year-old Julian An-thony Pounder, went on trial sepa-rately at the same court Thursday. Both defendants could face firing squads if found guilty.

Sandiford, who was not ac-companied by a lawyer, told the court she would challenge the indictment submitted by prosecu-tors, arguing it was not accurate.

Indonesia has very strict drug laws. More than 140 people are on death row for drug crimes, a third of them foreigners.

“We encourage the Bangli Regent to close the quarry C activity as it will damage the physi-cal landscape that so far has been the tourism object,” said Chairman of GIPI Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, in Denpasar on Saturday (Oct 6).

He said the existence of the Mount Batur calde-ra named as the first geopark in Indonesia should be maintained. To that end, the government and lo-cal communities should be committed to maintain the region in order to remain sustainable.

“We have to refer to the sustainable tourism. On that account, please preserve our neighbor-hood and culture becoming the main tourist attrac-tion. Quarry C will only have a negative impact on the environment, especially tourism,” he said.

According to him, the government and local communities had to compare to the presence of the damaged quarry at Kusamba village, Klungkung that had been exploited continuously. “Quarry C has its limited time of exploration as happened at Kusamba. If that happens to the cal-dera of Mount Batur, the natural resources will run out and tourists will not come,” he said.

In response to the community that had been struggling to look for their bread and butter around the caldera of Mount Batur through the quarry C activities, Ngurah Wijaya advised the government to find out the best solution. For instance, local communities should be involved in the development of tourism.

“Similarly, we have to see whether the people

working in the quarry C are the Balinese, espe-cially those from Bangli and Kintamani. The region should remain under control and be preserved,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Bangli, I Made Gi-anyar, when met in Jimbaran, Badung, recently stated the challenge in the future was to arrange the region in order the caldera of Mount Batur remained sustainable, including arranging the 15 villages in the area. Within the caldera of Mount Batur there were 15 villages that would be developed into a tourist destination.

“Masterplan has been made but it needs to be refined. In the future, after this we will undertake technical and tactical measure in the Bangli government. There are 15 villages and its management concept is being discussed to be used for pilot project of the destination manage-ment organization (DMO) for tourism region,” he explained.

He mentioned that to arrange the caldera of Mount Batur, the central government had allo-cated a budget worth IDR 20 billion. The fund coming from the state budget would be used for the development of geosite as one of the programs.

“The geopark consisting of geosite and volca-nic eruption in particular years should be secured, so that it’s also a process of communication if there will be children coming there to study about the types of rock,” he said. (kmb27)

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama planned to build on an impressive fundraising haul Sunday, launching a lucrative and celebrity studded trip to California a day after Mitt Romney ticked off examples suggesting that news of a drop in unemployment has not reversed what ails the nation.

Romney rallied in battleground Florida on Saturday, the day after the government reported an unemployment rate of 7.8 percent in September, breaking a 43-month streak of joblessness of 8 percent or higher. The report risked breaking Romney’s stride, gained in a strong debate performance days earlier.

Because the American presidential race is decided in state-by-state votes rather than by popular vote, such “battleground” states that do not reliably vote either Republican or Democratic will likely decide the race.

The president was scheduled to launch a lucrative and celebrity-studded fundraising swing to Los Angeles and San Francisco on Sunday and Monday followed by a campaign rally in battleground Ohio.

“There is exactly one month left to go until Election Day,” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in an email pitch. “The stakes are too high for us to take our foot off the gas now.”

Persistently high unemployment, long after the recession’s of-ficial end, has been a leading threat to Obama’s re-election and the improvement came as a marked relief to the Obama campaign and a tricky development for his Republican rival.

Romney told an evening rally in Apopka, Florida, that with poverty, the food-stamp rolls and gas prices up, incomes down, college gradu-ates struggling to find work and millions of people who’ve lost jobs no longer trying to get new ones, it’s clear Obama doesn’t know how to fix the economy. “I know how, and I will get the job done.”

Bolstered by the Democratic National Convention, Obama and his party Saturday reported a combined take of $181 million for September, their best fundraising month of the campaign and just short of their record of $190 million in the 2008 campaign, also in September. Romney’s campaign has not released its report for the month yet.

Obama took time off Saturday for a 20th anniversary celebration with his wife, Michelle, postponed from the day of the first presiden-tial debate last week. They dined at Bourbon Steak in the Georgetown section of Washington. Romney devoted time to preparing for the next debate, Oct. 16 in Hempstead, New York, before his rally.

But the money machine was grinding relentlessly. Republican run-ning mate Paul Ryan scheduled an evening fundraiser in Milwaukee, Wis., and neither party let up in their appeals for cash for the frantic final weeks ahead. Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden go head-to-head in a debate Thursday in Danville, Kentucky.

Henrique Capriles, a centrist state governor, edged toward the still popular Chavez in final polls thanks to a vigorous campaign that united the opposition and made him its best chance of end-ing Chavez’s 14-year rule.

Chavez has used record oil revenue to support ideological allies around the world, while preaching a fiercely anti-U.S. line, so the election will be watched eagerly from the United States to Belarus and Iran.

Across the poor neighbor-hoods where the flamboyant former soldier draws his most fervent following, loyalists pre-pared to blow bugles and trum-pets in a predawn wake-up call for voters.

Oppos i t ion sympath ize rs banged pots and pans in a pro-test against Chavez on Saturday night, creating a racket in the upscale neighborhoods of east-ern Caracas. In the city center, which is more pro-government, the noise was drowned out by supporters playing his campaign music and shouting his name.

“I ask political actors from the

left, right and center to prepare emotionally to accept tomorrow’s results. It’s not going to be the end of the world for anyone,” Chavez said at a last- minute news conference at the presiden-tial palace.

The 58-year-old president staged a remarkable comeback from cancer this year. But he could not match the energy of past campaigns - or the pace set by his 40-year-old basketball-loving opponent.

Most well-known pollsters put Chavez in front. But two have Capriles just ahead, and his num-bers have crept up in others.

There is a risk of violence if the result is contested.

There will be no formal in-ternational observers, although Venezuela invited a delegation of the UNASUR group of South American nations to “accompany” the vote.

Local groups will be monitor-ing and both sides say they trust the electronic, fingerprint vote system. The opposition says it will have witnesses at all of the 13,810 polling centers from tiny Amazon

villages to tough Caracas slums.Capriles geared up on Saturday

for the vote by hiking a mountain trail at the edge of Caracas that is popular with athletic Venezuelans. He donned running clothes and mirrored sunglasses, and posed for pictures with supporters.

Chavez spent about half an hour in the evening speaking to reporters alongside members of the UNASUR delegation, headed by an Argentine politician. Asked by one reporter if he wanted to stay in office beyond 2018, he glibly replied, “Twenty years is nothing,” in reference to a popular Argentine tango song.

Capriles shot back via Twitter. “Right now some people continue with the same nonsense and the same stories as always, the differ-ence is this time they’re on their way out!”

In a politically polarized coun-try where firearms are common and the murder rate is one of the highest in the world, tensions have risen alongside weeks of tough campaign rhetoric, and both camps are vowing to “defend” their votes.

YOGYAKARTA — Rabies experts from 12 Asian countries have con-cluded their annual meeting to exchange views and find practical solutions to the disease, which is still prevalent in the region.

During the five-day meeting that ended Friday, experts from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and host Indonesia described their countries’ situations and addressed specific problems encountered in their clinical practices.

Rita Kusriastuti, a senior official at Indonesia’s Health Ministry, said the discussion highlighted the need for united efforts, especially among paramed-ics and veterinarians.

Rabies kills some 70,000 people annually. In Indonesia, it is endemic in 24 of the country’s 33 provinces, with the highest number of human cases on Bali island and East Nusatenggara.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals says rabies cases in Bali have declined since 2010, when it led a project to vaccinate more than 200,000 dogs there in six months.

Deputy Justice and Human Rights Minister Denny Indrayana said in a statement Yudhoyono decided to interfere after receiv-ing reports about the growing tension between the two law enforcement agencies.

A group of community lead-ers including academicians, law experts and human rightists have urged the president to step in to settle the conflict.

They urged the president to fire police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo for failing to control his officers.

The president has also been widely criticized for staying si-lent allowing police to interfere in corruption case being investi-gated by KPK.

A KPK law rules that other law enforcement agencies including police and the attorney general office may not interfere in cor-ruption case being investigated by KPK. The law even authorizes the anti graft agency to take over corruption case from other law enforcement agencies.

Deny said in the statement on Saturday evening he was sum-

moned by the president to ex-plain about an incident on Friday evening when a group of police officers led by chief detective of the Bengkulu provincial police Sr. Comr. Dedy Rianto came to KPK to arrest a KPK investigator who is a police officer on loan to the agency.

“I reported that last night’s in-cident was a follow up of a many happenings including about the driving simulator case,” he said.

He said he also told the presi-dent that the KPK-police polem-ics were worse with the issue of attempt to weaken KPK with the plan to revise the KPK Law, the withdrawal of police investiga-tors from KPK and attempt to arrest KPK investigator Comm.Novel Baswedan.

Novel Baswedan is is a police officer on loan to KPK and he is among five officers not yet honored police summon to return to the force.

Police have decided to with-draw 20 of their officers from KPK but five of them including Novel chose to stay with KPK.

Novel is KPK’s chief inves-

tigator of the driving simulator corruption case involving two police generals Ins. Gen. Djoko Susi lo and Brig. Gen Didik Purnomo.

“All those series of happenings are suspected of being an attempt to weaken KPK,” Denny said.

According to Denny the presi-dent already have many reports about the KPK-police row

“It is time for me to explain to the people what we have done; that we will continue to work. Certainly I very much need KPK in the fight against corruption,” Denny quoted the president as saying.

Denny said the president asked him to help prepare a com-plete written materials including a solution.

He said the president also sug-gested meeting between the police chief and the KPK chairman.

The coordinating minister for security, law and political affairs is asked to facilitate the meeting, he said.

KUALA LUMPUR — A Ma-laysian couple has been charged with beating, scalding and ex-ploiting their Indonesian maid in the latest such abuse case in Malaysia despite new rules to better protect domestic workers, a prosecutor said Saturday.

A series of cases involving the abuse of Indonesian maids by their Malaysian employers has strained ties between the South-east Asian neighbors. Indonesia this year lifted a three-year ban on sending maids to Malaysia after the countries agreed to better pro-tect the workers, including giving them one day off per week.

Prosecutor Chuah Shyue Chien

said Mohamad Shukur Suradi, 28, and his wife, Daeng Noru-lasyikin Bachok, 27, pleaded not guilty Friday to causing grievous harm to their 21-year-old maid, Marsini, who like many Indone-sians uses one name.

Chuah alleged that the couple used a knife, a golf club, a clothes hanger and a belt to hit Marsini and scalded her with hot oil and water between July and Sept. 23 at their home in southern Johor state.

The car salesman and his teacher wife also were charged under the Anti-Human Traffick-ing Act with exploiting Marsini by making her work long hours and working against her will, Chuah said.

They face up to 35 years in jail and whipping if convicted for both offenses.

Chuah said Marsini , who started working for the couple in January, managed to escape from her employers and lodged a police report. He said she is cur-rently in a shelter home to nurse her injuries.

The couple has been freed on bail, with a court date set for Oct. 16.

Indonesian Embassy officials could not be reached immediately for comment.

More than 200,000 Indonesian maids work in Malaysia. Indone-sian officials say hundreds com-plain every year of mistreatment, overwork and unpaid salaries.

BANDA ACEH — Three men convicted of gambling were pub-licly caned Friday under Islamic law in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province.

The chief of the civil service police, Rusli, says the three were each given seven lashes outside a mosque after Friday prayers in Jantho, the capital of Aceh Besar district. Dozens of onlookers watched the beating, the third there this year in the devout Islamic province.

The men were questioned by police last month while playing domi-nos for money at a coffee shop. A fourth man who was also questioned failed to show up for the caning because of illness, said Rusli, who uses a single name.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation with 240 million people, has a policy of secularism but allows highly conservative Aceh province to implement a version of Sharia Islamic law.

The first two canings this year were in Langsa, the capital of East Aceh district, where five gamblers were flogged in March, followed by 10 men and a woman in April for gambling and immoral behavior.

When asking for confirmation separately to the Head of Bali Forestry Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wiranatha, said the cooperation of utilization and management of the mangrove forests had indeed received permission from the Ministry of Forestry, Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation and its derivatives as set forth in the decree of the Governor of Bali. He said it was in the process of drafting the collaboration between the investors and management of the Grand Park Forest.

According to him, the 102 hectares of mangrove forest to be managed by investor could not be entirely used for tourism facilities. “It will be ar-ranged where and how many hectares of the land may be constructed. For example, the built area is only allowed for 10 percent, while the remaining area is not,” he said. Related to the kind of facilities to be built, according to Wiranatha, it would be organized in the cooperation agreement and would not touch the protection zone.

Furthermore, he said the investors would be obliged to participate in the preservation of the mangrove forests and there would be revenue for local government from the management of the eco-tourism in the region. “In the future, there will be revenue for local government such as IDR 100 million and will be evaluated each year. However, if there is any utilization damaging the environment, we will revoke the permit,” he said. (wid)

Felipe Massa came through from 10th on the grid to second for his first podium finish in nearly two years. But for the home crowd everything was insignificant compared to Kamui Kobayashi fend-ing off Jenson Button for his maiden F1 podium in third place, as he equalled the best ever finish for a Japanese driver.

Vettel’s third Suzuka victory in four starts at the venue came easily as several likely challengers were eliminated in a chaotic first lap. The carnage began when Alonso’s Ferrari and Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus banged wheels on the run to the first corner. That caused damage to the Ferrari and left it spinning into the sand trap. Kobayashi had thrust his Sauber between the Red Bulls off the line, and things then got much worse for Mark Webber when Romain Grosjean slid into him at the second corner.

The Lotus driver picked up front wing damage and a 10-second stop/go penalty, while Webber was spun to the back and needed a pitstop for checks.

As the chain reaction unfolded behind, Nico Ros-berg’s Mercedes was taken out in a clash with Bruno Senna’s Williams. Once the resultant safety car had come in, Vettel was free to dominate, leading by as

much as 20s on his way to a third victory of 2012.Kobayashi held second until the first pitstops,

when both he and the chasing Button were leap-frogged by Massa. Like Button, the Ferrari driver had gained a lot of ground in the first-corner shambles, and once ahead of the McLaren and Sauber, Massa was quick enough to pull away.

Button tried his utmost to similarly demote Ko-bayashi, but a slightly slow final pitstop did not help and the local hero to keep last year’s Suzuka winner at bay. Lewis Hamilton had a quiet start to the race in the second McLaren before coming through to fifth. He fell victim to a superb dive-bomb pass from McLaren replacement Sergio Perez in the first stint - the Sauber having dropped behind in a failed outside-line bid to pass Raikkonen at the first corner.

Hamilton then got back ahead of Perez at the first pitstops, and as he tried to retaliate down the outside at the hairpin, Perez ran wide and spun into retirement.

The McLaren then jumped Raikkonen for fifth at the second stops - emerging alongside the Lotus and muscling it aside at the second turn despite Raikkonen seeming to have the momentum. Nico Hulkenberg’s

Force India chased Raikkonen home in seventh while resist-ing pressure from Pastor Maldonado’s Williams. Web-ber recovered to ninth, pitting just once more after his lap-one stop. Daniel Ricciardo made it two Australians in the points as Toro Rosso’s mini-resurgence contin-ued. Ricciardo resisted pressure from Michael Schu-macher to the finish, prevent-ing Mercedes from scoring this weekend.

The lap one mess gave Caterham a sniff of an opportunity as Heikki Kovalainen emerged in 11th. He could not stay ahead of the recovering front-runners, though.

TOKYO - Kei Nishikori stunned big-serving Milos Raonic 7-6 3-6 6-0 with an electrifying display of attacking tennis to become the host country’s first Japan Open champion on Sunday. It was the eighth seed’s second career title after winning in Delray Beach in 2008 and will elevate the 22-year-old

from 17th to 15th in the world rankings.“I’m partying tonight,” Nishikori said in a courtside interview

as a sellout Tokyo crowd went wild. “I’d thought the Gods were against me at this event in the past. “To win the title is amazing. I’m overwhelmed.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do with a year’s worth of Corona beer,” added Nishikori, sheepishly referring to a bonus gift from tournament sponsors. “I don’t even like beer.” Nishikori took the first set tiebreak 7-5 after a jaw-dropping running back-hand pass, clenching his fist to salute the roars of the crowd.

Sixth seed Raonic took the second, drilling a bullet serve at Nishikori’s body as the cheers of the majority among the 13,000 centre court fans turned to groans.

However, Nishikori stormed back in the decider, ripping another fierce backhand pass down the line to open a 4-0 lead,

leaving his Canadian opponent gaping in disbelief. He delivered the coup de grace moments later, a lofted return forcing Raonic to smash a drive volley into the net after two hours, eight minutes to complete a final set ‘bagel’.

Both players were presented with flowers by Aus-tralian Ken Rosewall, who won the title in 1973, the first

year the Japan Open became an official tournament.“Kei is a superstar in Japan,” said Raonic, who shocked last year’s

winner and U.S. champion Andy Murray in the semi-finals and fired down 14 aces against Nishikori.

“Thank you Japan for your support,” added Raonic, who is projected to rise one spot to 14th in the rankings. “And thank you for inventing sushi. I love it.”

MEXICO CITY - As the world’s top professional basketball league gears up for Sunday’s preseason launch in Mexico City, National Basketball Associa-tion officials are hinting at permanent expansion south of the border. Sunday’s face-off between the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Hornets marks the 20th ex-hibition game to be played in Mexico, the most of any country outside the United States or Canada, and the first such game at the brand new Mexico City Arena.

The NBA already has concrete plans to expand its Mexican footprint. “Next year and the year after that there will be regular season games here, which is really huge,” said Cedric Ceballos, a former NBA player turned league ambassador. “Those two years are the big test to see what happens.”

Latin America is one of the league’s top growth markets, accounting for 15 to 20 percent of interna-tional revenues, Philippe Moggio, the NBA’s vice president for Latin America, told Reuters.

Given the proximity to the United States, Ceballos said a future franchise in Mexico City would be a natu-ral fit. “Now that there’s a building that can house an NBA team, where we can play regular season games, it’s a natural place to be thinking about it,” said Mog-gio. Ceballos, who played with said a Mexico City franchise could be established within five years.

Meanwhile, the league is focusing attention on local talents like Gustavo Ayon, recently acquired by the Orlando Magic from New Orleans, and only the third Mexican-born player in NBA history.

Alas Kedaton is situated at Kukuh Village, Marga Subdistrict, or some 4 km from the town of Tabanan. This temple has two kinds of uniqueness. Firstly, it has four entrances into the temple, namely the entrance from the west functioning as the main entrance, then from the north, east and the south. All the entrances lead

to the middle courtyard. Secondly, the courtyard becoming the sanctum sanctorum is even lower than the middle and outermost courtyard.

The sanctum is surrounded by a forest becoming the native home to a group of monkeys considered sacred. Besides, there also live a group of flying foxes suspending on the branches of large trees. When they are flying together, it generates

a very interesting attraction for do-mestic and foreign tourists.

Piodalan or anniversary of this temple is celebrated on Tuesday (Anggara Kasih) or twenty days after Galungan. Uniquely, the ritual should be commenced at noon and should be completed before sunset. The temple is often called Alas Kedaton or Dalem Kahyangan Temple.

West Bromwich Albion maintained their surprisingly good start to the season and ended the day in fourth spot when Steve Clarke’s side beat Queens Park Rangers, managed by his old Chelsea team mate Mark Hughes, 3-2 at The Hawthorns. QPR stayed bottom without a win and with just two points while West Brom have now won their first four top flight home games for the first time since the 1919/20 season when they won their only English championship.

Arsenal came from behind to beat West Ham United 3-1 and climb to fifth after Frenchman Olivier Giroud scored his first goal since a close season move from Mont-pellier while Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla struck in the last 13 minutes. Mohamed Diame had put the Hammers ahead with a brilliantly taken angled strike in the 21st minute.

Chelsea top the table with 19 points from seven games, followed by Manchester City on 15, Everton and West Brom on 14 and Arsenal on 12, level with Manchester United who visit Newcastle United in Sunday’s late kickoff. Tottenham Hotspur, who are seventh on 11 points, also play on Sunday when they face lowly Aston Villa at White Hart Lane.

BAD HEADLINES

European champions Chelsea made head-lines for all the wrong reasons in the morn-ing newspapers after Friday’s publication of the findings of an FA hearing that

questioned the accounts given by skipper John Terry and defender Ashley Cole in the racism case involving Queens Park Rang-ers defender Anton Ferdinand.

Terry, facing a four-match ban and 220,000 pounds ($356,200) FA fine for his racial slur against Ferdinand last year, and Cole, whose evidence was questioned in the 63-page written document, both played against struggling Norwich, who took a surprise lead through Grant Holt after 11 minutes.

But Chelsea, playing with style and panache, replied four times with goals from Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard and a superb volley from Branislav Ivanovic.

Lampard’s strike was his 129th Chelsea goal in the English Premier League, putting him level with Bobby Tambling as the club’s joint-highest top-flight scorer. Torres main-tained his good start to the season with a header to pull the home side level in the 14th minute before Lampard drilled in from 15 metres to put Chelsea ahead eight minutes later.

Hazard made it 3-1 after 31 minutes as Norwich, who lost 5-2 at home to Liver-pool last week, looked set for another hid-ing. But the visitors stemmed the flow of goals after that until Ivanovic struck with a volley 14 minutes from time.

“We played some ex-cellent football and at the moment we seem to be scoring a lot of goals.” Chelsea have now won six and drawn one of their seven games while Norwich re-main winless and second from bot-tom with just three points.

Manchester City climbed to second after beating Sun-derland at the Etihad Stadium where Aleksan-dar Kolarov, Sergio Ague-ro and James Milner were on target.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Ronald-inho scored a hat-trick as Atletico

Fred, whose goal won the derby against Flamengo last weekend, scored in the 72nd minute at the Engenhao in Rio, beginning a counter-attack in midfield, taking a return pass from winger Wellington Nem and slotting home.

BERLIN - Bayern Munich made it seven wins out of seven in the Bundesliga on Saturday as two goals from Franck Ribery led them to a 2-0 win over a toothless Hoffenheim in an embarrassingly one-sided match. Having slumped to a shock defeat at BATE Bori-sov in the Champions League on Tuesday, Bayern barely broke sweat in a tepid encounter at the Allianz Arena.

Dutchman Ibrahim Afellay scored his first goal for Schalke 04 in their 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg, who are managed by Schalke’s former coach Fe-lix Magath, and Hamburg SV continued their climb up the table by winning 1-0 at Greuther Fuerth. Mainz beat Fortuna Dues-seldorf 1-0 with an 85th minute goal by Macedonia defender Nikolce Noveski to end the pro-moted side’s unbeaten record and Freiburg beat Nuremberg 3-0 to hand their opponents a fourth defeat in a row.

Bayern are top with 21 points, five ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt, who visit Borussia Moenchengla-dbach on Sunday, while Schalke are third with 14.

JERUSALEM - Israel coach Eli Gutt-man dropped stalwart captain Yossi Benay-oun from his squad on Saturday ahead of back-to-back World Cup European group F qualifiers against Luxembourg next week. The West Ham United midfielder was one of a number surprise omissions from a list of 23 named ahead of the Oct. 12 clash in Luxembourg and the return fixture in Tel Aviv four days later.

Guttman offered no explanation for the move in statement issued by the Israel Foot-

ball Association, but local media reports said players had been dropped because they were not getting regular playing time at their clubs.

Israel’s campaign got off to a poor start last month with a 1-1 away draw against Azerbaijan followed by a 4-0 home drub-bing by Russia, their worst start in qualify-ing since 1994.

Guttman has not won a game since taking over last December and with vital points already dropped, his hopes of tak-ing Israel to a first major tournament finals since 1970, from a qualifying group that

also includes Portugal and Northern Ireland, appear bleak.

Benayoun, 32, had made 90 inter-national appearances for Israel, second on the all-time list, and scored 24 goals. He had been Israel’s regular captain since 2008.

Others dropped included experienced defender Tal Ben Haim, who is currently without a club following his departure from Portsmouth. Strikers Itai Shechter of Swansea City and Hertha Berlin’s Ben Sahar, and Nuremburg midfielder Almog Cohen were also omitted.

Ribery opened the scoring with his first Bundesliga goal of the season when he slipped past his marker and scored with a low shot which slipped through the legs of goalkeeper Koen Casteels. Robert Firmino missed a rare chance for Hoffenheim when he failed to hit the target with a header while Thomas Mu-eller went off for Bayern with a nasty cut on the face.

Frenchman Ribery made the game safe within two minutes of the re-start when Toni Kroos, having initially miscued the ball, found him unmarked and he fired the ball past Casteels. “Bayern played very well and we tried to defend as best we could,” said Casteels. “It went very well in the first half, but at the end of the day, Bayern only needed a couple of chances. We didn’t at-tack enough.”

Peru striker Jefferson Farfan struck the first blow for Schalke when he headed in Christian Fuchs’ cross in the first real chance of the game after 33 minutes. Within one minute of the re-start, Afellay, on loan from Barcelona, was sent clear by

Lewis Holtby’s pass and drilled the ball past Diego Benaglio.

Roman Neustaedter completed the scoring from close range after Wolfsburg failed to clear a corner in the 58th minute. “I enjoyed the match and I think the fans did as well,” said Schalke 04 coach Huub Stevens. “I’m happy with the result and the way we achieved it.”

Hamburg, who lost their first three games, made it 10 points out of their last 12 when South Korea midfielder Heung-Min son broke from the halfway line to score the winning goal at top flight newcomers Greuther Fuerth. Hamburg climbed to eighth while Fuerth are bottom on four points after their fourth straight home defeat.

The president also strongly rejected attempt to weaken KPK , Denny said.

(wid)

(kmb27)

STOCKHOLM — Guessing who will win a Nobel Prize is a bit like forecasting the stock market: Experts don’t seem to do it any better than laymen. about,” he said.

(kmb)

The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine.

(kmb12)

Yes, Esquire magazine has bestowed its magi-cal title of Sexiest Woman Alive this year on Ku-nis, who dethrones last year’s honoree, Rihanna. And as is tradition, Kunis celebrates her new role in the magazine’s November issue by posing for a photo spread wearing lingerie and less. She also shares in an interview her thoughts on everything from the art of humor, to being an immigrant, to politics.

Though the actress rose to fame on the sitcom “That ‘70s Show” and has starred in romantic comedies like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Friends With Benefits,” she wouldn’t actu-ally call herself a funny person.

“I think I stumbled upon doing funny things, but I’m not funny. I just know how to deliver a joke. There are people who naturally exude humor and are constantly saying funny things, and there are the people who know how to deliver a joke,” she tells the magazine. “It’s a learned skill. Through twenty years of doing this, I practice it. I think that the second you think that you’re funny is when you stop being funny.”

And as for the press she’s gotten over the

years for her story of coming to the United States from Russia as a child, well, she thinks it’s been a bit overblown.

“It has nothing to do with me. I feel awful talking about it, because my parents should sit down and talk about it. They’re the ones who went through hell and back, who gave everything up. I didn’t do anything,” admits Kunis. “I was eight years old, and I tagged along. And my parents made me feel safe. I didn’t make those decisions. So I can’t take responsibility for it. Every immigrant has a story.

NEW YORK — In a week when Big Bird was in the news, it seemed fitting to find him perched at the parody news re-port on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

But joining Seth Meyers at the “Weekend Update” anchor desk, the popular “Sesame Street” character declined to comment on presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s vow to cut fed-eral funding for PBS. Explaining why, Big Bird said he didn’t want to “ruffle any feathers.”

He told Meyers how he had learned of being mentioned on Wednesday’s debate. He said he’d gotten “a million tweets.” From real birds, that is. Since then, he said he was feeling very fa-mous, standing tall above every other 8-foot talking bird.

In closing, Big Bird shared a joke befitting his childish sense of humor. Question: Who like debates? Answer: de-fishes.
