PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER m i j r r m T ftrn » n i n U n t l'Jiil I * iti » t Volume 1, No. 1 May-June 1987 AN iMD IJNC ING In case you haven't noticed, 1987 has already brought some big changes to Edison Township's public library. Our Main Library has doubled in size with a beautifully renovated interior! We now have new reading areas with comfortable new chairs and sofas in both the Adult and Children's Room- the perfect place to sit back and relax while enjoying your favorite magazines and newspapers! In addition, our library has a new Director. Mrs. Susan Krieger, formerly Director of the Somerville Public Library, took over on March 2nd. Since her arrival, the Edison Twp. Public Library has become a full member of the Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium. Formed in 1984, the Consortium has developed plans to implement a shared automation system for its member libraries. One great advantage of a shared automation system among groups of libraries will be the creation of a shared data base of library holdings. This will mean that a patron In one library can be assisted in locating a book in any other member library and initiating an interlibrary loan request for a book at the touch of a button! Bar code labels, the first step in automating library circulation systems, have been ordered. Watch for updates in future newslettersl MORE COMINGS AND GOINGS: Mrs. Sadie Kanitra retired from her position as Library Assistant on May 9th. Mrs. Kanitra worked at the Clara Barton Branch and served the public diligently for over seventeen years. She will be greatly missed by her co-workers and the many patrons she has be- friended over the years. Mrs. Jean Render has left her part-time position at the Main Library where she served for five years. She is now working full-time at the Clara Barton Branch. YIND ‘YOURSELF Libraries have many friends: A national survey of public and academic libraries shows 2300 Friends groups across the U.S. with membership of more than 600,000! In 1985, these groups raised $27.7 million with fund raising techniques ranging from the traditional book sales to the most sophisticated capital giving campaigns. Most importantly, Friends stimulate public awareness and support of libraries. A number of years ago, the Edison Twp. Public Library had an active Friends group. Let's renew that special FRIEND-ship! If you're interested in joining, please contact Mrs. Betty Ann Lau at the library, 287-2298.

HERE COMES THE CD’S *'00 CD CD CD CD CD CD" COMPACT DISKS___3_

The Edison Library has joined the New Jersey Compact Disk Circuit! Initially, we will be receiving a collection of about 25 CDs which may be borrowed by our patrons. Every three months we will exchange the current collection with another library in the circuit. We expect tobegin circulating the CDs by the middle of June 1987......

WHAT IS A CD?A "CD" (compact disk or disc) is a new type of sound recording which offers sound reproduction which is so distortion-free that it sounds flawless. Sounds are transformed into numbers which are "read" by the low-powered laser in a CD player and converted into the sound that comes out of your speakers. A CD measures approximately 43/4 inches in diameter and is only played on one side. Since its surface is read by a light beam, a CD doesn't wear out and small scratches don’t effect ound reproduction.

For further details inquire at the library...UPDATE: As members of the New Jersey Library Video Circuit

the Edison Library receives a collection of video cassettes every two months. Videos beginning with the letters A-K will be at the North Edison Library while those with titles beginning with the letters L-Z will be at the Main Library until the end of May when the libraries will exchange collections Some of the titles we are currently circulating include:
