Problem Definition
In order to boost achievement, a massive effort is underway to place iPads into the handsof K-12 students across the United States. The Los Angeles Unified School District
recently began its roll out of a $1 billion iPad program (Blume, 2013). According to the
Director of Educational Technology, the Sweetwater Union High School District in San
Diego has purchased 13,000 iPads for the current school year and plans on purchasing an
additional 8,000 for the coming year (D. Damico, personal communication, February 6,
2014). The website http://www.teachingtableapp.com/grants-for-ipad/ is just one of many
providing information on how educators can obtain funding to place iPads in their schools.
Technology alone is not the solution to the challenges facing schools. It is merely a tool, and
as with all tools, it is useless without context or content. In the fall of 2012, the PTA of an
Alexandria elementary school in the Fairfax County Public School District funded a project
to provide each of the classroom teachers with an iPad. A single instructor gave a fifty
minute training session to the schools ninety teachers on how to check email.
Consequently, this became the teachers' primary use for the tablet. At the end of the year
the principal removed the iPads from the classrooms and they currently reside in a rarely
checked-out cart in the technology department.
For the teachers to make use of this resource, we propose creating a training program that
demonstrates how the iPads can be utilized effectively in the classroom. This training
program will be based on the pilot project model, designed for a specific
teacher/classroom, with the intent of being able to adapt the program for wider
implementation.

One student has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with
accommodations that include dictionary options, extra time, network log-on
help, additional writing/math instruction time, read aloud accommodations
and frequent breaks
Learning styles This was not assessed because the instruction will be designed to
accommodate all learning styles possibly present in the classroom
Prior experience
The teacher is comfortable functioning in a technology rich environment. She
owns an iPad and is familiar with the interface. This design document will
include instruction for a less experienced user because of the implications of
wider implementation
The 5th grade class was surveyed (23 students present) to determine their
access to and familiarity with iPads and/or tablets with the following results
Students are routinely walked through technology projects projected on the
SmartBoard in their classroom while they use individual devices
Students all have internet access at home and are used to completing a daily
reading log using Blackboard and Google Apps for Education

Transfer Context
The students and teacher in this class have experience using technology devices to
meet learning objectives. Adding iPad functionality will give them one more tool to
research, write, create, and compile information. A follow-up lesson targeted to a
specific subject (not technology usage) should facilitate transference of the the newlyacquired skills.
Procedural Task Analysis
The teachers and students of this school are comfortable with creating and deliveringcontent using Google Apps for Education on traditional computers. To maximize
transferability, this design will focus on the use of the iPads hardware and interfaces to
create content in the familiar Google Apps environment.
Data sources include the iPad User Guide (2013) and iPad specifications from Apples
website (iPad 2 Specifications, 2013). In addition, team members documented their
handling of an iPad. The 5th grade teacher, our main subject matter expert (SME),
provided detailed information on integrating Google Apps for Education via internal
communications within the IDD team.

Instructional ObjectivesThe school has iPads that are not being used due to teachers lack of training and
understanding of the benefits to the curriculum the devices can provide. The objective of
this lesson is to provide the teacher and the students with the skills necessary to use thetablets as a tool to create and share content within the already familiar environment of
Google Apps for Education. While the writing necessary to complete the Google document
falls within the cognitive domain, the remainder of the objectives are psychomotor and deal
with manipulation of the iPad and its interfaces.
By the completion of the lesson the teacher will be able to use the iPad to:
turn on/off and sleep/wake the iPad using the On/Off/Sleep/Wake button
return to the homepage from within any application on the tablet using the Home
button or hand gesture

Instructional ApproachFor the teacher, the Google slide presentation developed by the ID team will be available
online at http://goo.gl/IejupY. It will be a self-paced course allowing the teacher to practice
with the iPad until she is competent with the tablets interfaces and has met the objectives.
Once the teacher has completed the course she will give a classroom lesson on the use of
the iPad to a 5th grade class. The course will be presented using a computer connected to
the classroom SmartBoard to display the Google slide presentation developed by the IDD
team and available on the web.
Teacher Training
Training is self paced and should be completed before the teacher presents the lesson
to her class.

Limitations and Constraints
The IDD team is using Google presentation software because the program allows
easy access to the slide presentation.
Google Apps for Education applications are being used to create the document
instead of native iPad applications because the teacher and the students already
have accounts and are familiar with the environment. Also, work is automatically
saved to their accounts instead of to the borrowed iPads.
The teacher and the students will be limited to using iPads that belong to the school
because of significant differences in the hardware and the software of later
releases.
Any content that is created on the iPad will need to be uploaded to a Google
document to save since the tablets will be returned to the Technology Department,
otherwise content will be lost.
The schools iPads have been set to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity rather thanthe standard power-saving 2 minutes. It is unlikely that the iPads will spontaneously
enter sleep mode during the class lesson, so it has been omitted from the student
course.
Evaluation PlanFormative Evaluation
Teacher evaluation
The most crucial element in this course is the iPad instruction to the teacher. If a teacher
feels comfortable using the technology he or she is more likely to move forward with the
classroom introduction, and more likely to use the iPad as a resource to enrich his or her
teaching. Because the classroom teacher is a member of the IDD team and the primary
SME, the IDD team has enlisted the help of a teacher at the school who has never handled
an iPad to be a test subject for a beta test of the slide presentation.
The test subject teacher will complete the following online survey available at
http://goo.gl/EzblfEbefore taking the course, and again after completing the course:
5 point scale, 5 being strongest:
I feel comfortable handling the iPad
Google Apps for Education is easy to use on the iPad
19

20/23
I am ready to present a lesson about how to use an iPad to my students.
I can think of ways to use the iPad in my classroom with other subjects.
I am curious about what other things can be done with the iPad.
I think the iPad can help my students stay focused on tasks.
Yes/No questions: I can access my Google account on the iPad.
I can create a Google document on the iPad.
I can upload images to a Google document on the iPad.
I can use the On/Off Sleep/Wake button.
I can use the Home Button.
Free response questions:
What other information would you like presented in this lesson?
How do you intend to practice your skills further?
Do you have any other observations or questions?
Data gathering techniques:
Before beginning the beta test the SME will explain the purpose of the test to the test
subject. At the completion of each module the SME will ask the following interview
questions if applicable:
Does the sequence make sense?
Which slides are the easiest to understand?
Which slides were confusing or difficult to understand?
What unforeseen events occurred while the handling the iPad? What difficulties were encountered while creating content?
Does the test subject have any other questions or comments?
If the test subject reaches an impasse during the test the SME will document the
location of the problem and the quantity and content of the intervention that is
necessary to allow the test subject to proceed independently.
Analysis/Reporting
The SME will record her observations as comments to a separate online copy of the
slide presentation. This will allow the members of the IDD team to remotely observe
the test in real time with minimal impact to the test subject. At the conclusion of the test
the team will have the ability to question the test subject.
The IDD team will have full access to the test results on the Google presentation and
will make changes to the presentation based on the results.

Classroom evaluation
The SME will present the lesson to her 5th grade class. They will complete the following
survey available at http://goo.gl/ezqzfrbefore the lesson and again at the conclusion of
the lesson.
5 point scale, 5 being strongest
I know how to use an iPad.
Google Applications for Education is easy to use on the iPad.
I like using the iPad and want to continue practicing my skills.
I would like to use the iPad to study other subjects.
Using an iPad is boring.
Using an iPad is fun.
Yes/No questions
I know how to get to my Google account on the iPad. I know how to make a Google document on the iPad.
I can upload pictures from the camera roll to a Google document.
I can put the iPad to sleep and wake it.
I know where the Home Button is.
Free response
What other things would you like to do with the iPad?
What questions do you have?
What advice can you give?
Instructor feedback
The classroom instructor SME will take notes on the students reactions during the
lesson and record them as comments to the slide presentation.
Analysis/Reporting
If less than 60% of the learners report an increase in knowledge and skills on the
iPad, or if less than 80% of the learners are able to successfully complete the Google
document with text and images, changes will be made to the design of the instruction
based on the results.
A report will be created summarizing the pre and post survey results, the success of
content creation, and the instructors observations. This report will be made available
to the Principal and the PTA in the form of an online document available in Google.
