From the Office
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As usual, the school year has started off with great success and we
are thrilled to see how much learning has taken place al-
ready! Students have settled into their new classrooms and are build-
ing friendships and lifelong skills in an exciting atmosphere. It was
great to see so many family and friends join our students at our Meet
the Teacher evening. Having those home to school connections is so
important for your child’s continued success.
As we head into the month of Thanksgiving, I want to take a minute
to THANK you all, as part of our Edith Cavell family, for your support
and patience so far this school year. We are a bigger school (we have
54 new little faces in our building this year!) and we have been trying
out new routines and strategies to find the best solutions for every-
one. Your feedback has been a valuable part of the process this Sep-
tember and we are grateful that you have been with us on this jour-
ney!
In an effort to celebrate all of the amazing things happening at Edith
Cavell, we have taken to social media to share our stories and excite-
ment. We invite to join us on Facebook (Edith Cavell Public School)
and on Twitter (@EdithCavellDSBN).
From all of us here at Edith Cavell, we wish you a month full of things
to be grateful for and a Happy Halloween!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kosh and Mrs. Mikolic
Each year, students in grade 3 and 6 write the EQAO Assessment in mathematics and language. We, at Edith Cavell, work very hard each year to improve our EQAO scores as this indicates that our stu-dents are becoming more proficient learners. Please see page 7 for our results. For more information, please visit www.eqao.com
or ask your child’s teacher.

Dismissal Arrangements & End of
Day Pick Ups
We would like to review how important it
is to make end-of-day arrangements for
our students well in advance. Students can
become confused or upset if they are not
fully aware of where they are supposed to
go/be at day’s end.
From time to time, we understand that
last-minute arrangements must be made in
case of emergency, but we ask that such
events be communicated to the teacher
via the student agenda and the office be-
fore the event occurs. Please try to avoid
interrupting valuable classroom instruction
at the end of the day by waiting until 3:15
dismissal.
When picking up your child at the end of
the day, please meet them at their dis-
missal area outside.
We appreciate your support and under-
standing with this matter.
With Halloween around the corner and stu-
dents dressing up for school festivities, we
want to ensure a safe and happy environment
for all students to enjoy this day. We ask that
students not wear scary, gory or violent cos-
tumes to school. Scary masks and weapon like
accessories for such costumes must be left at
home. Thank you for cooperation.
Student Safety
For the safety of students,
dogs are not permitted on
Edith Cavell School prop-
erty. Families who walk
their dogs to school to drop
off/pick up their children
are asked to remain on the city sidewalk.
This will ensure that students, staff and
visitors affected by allergies or fright can
rest at ease. We appreciate your coopera-
tion with this guideline. Picture Day
Picture Day is Monday October
24th. Students who may absent
for the first picture day will have the opportu-
nity to get their photo taken at a later date.
DON’T FOREGT: Daylight Savings Time ends Nov 6, 2016 . Remember to set
your clocks back one hour.
CHOCOLATE BAR FUNDRAISER
This year’s Chocolate Bar Fundraiser begins Monday October 3rd and ends on Monday October 17th. Please support your school. Portion of the profits are put toward school activities and/or student educational re-sources. Please ensure that all the funds and any unsold chocolate bars are returned to the school on Monday October 17th. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
HEAD LICE
This is the time of year that head
lice seem to be most active.
Please check your child’s scalp
regularly and treat immediately
if you discover any eggs or lice. Please be
sure to notify the school so that other chil-
dren may be checked as well. Our procedure
at the school will be to check any student sus-
pected of head lice and send children home
for treatment upon discovery of head lice.
Letters will also be sent home with children
in the affected class.
Please use an appropriate shampoo as recom-
mended by a pharmacist. The Niagara Re-
gional Health Unit has informed us that the
careful removal of all eggs is important and
that shampooing alone will not necessarily kill
all eggs. PLEASE REMOVE ALL EGGS! For more
information, please visit their web site:
https://www.niagararegion.ca/health/
schools/headlice/default.aspx
Thank you for your support. It is the best way
to keep this nuisance under control.

A FEW REMINDERS... The whereabouts and safety of your child is important to us. It is essential for us to know
when your child is absent from school. Please phone the school at 905-684-6545. If we are
not able to answer the phone, and for after school hours calls, please leave a message on
our answering machine. Messages are checked regularly throughout the day. Your coop-
eration is greatly appreciated. Any unexplained absence will be checked using our call-back
system. We will be calling home/work to find out where the child is.
Being on time for school is an important habit to teach your child. We stress the need for
every student to be at school on time in order to not miss important lessons or information
being shared and it disrupts the class who have already begun their lesson learning. Stu-
dents who are late must report to the office to get a late slip for their teacher.
Students who need to leave the school during school hours must be signed out by a parent or
guardian at the office. There is a binder in the office for Sign Out purposes. When you return
your child to school you must accompany them to the office to sign them back in.

Flu season is coming!
Washing your hands prevents the spread of germs
and reduces your risk of getting sick. Wash your hands after:
coughing or sneezing blowing your nose using the washroom playing with pets playing outdoors before preparing
meals and eating
Use warm water and
soap, lather and scrub for at least 15 seconds. Have
children sing the ABC song, so they scrub for long
enough. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are safe for
children and can be used when you don’t see any
dirt.
How Long Must My Child Stay Home
When Sick?
Please keep your child at home and away from
others if he or she has any of these symptoms:
* Fever * Diarrhea
* Vomiting * Rash
* Sore throat
* Frequent coughing or sneezing
* Yellow or green discharge from the
nose, ears, or eyes
Contact your family doctor for a diagnosis. Your
doctor will advise you about care and treatment
if a communicable disease is diagnosed. For more
information, please contact the Infectious Dis-
ease Program at 905-688-8248 ext. 7330 or 1-888-
505-6074 or www.niagararegion.ca
Ontario’s HPV Immunization Program – Expanded to now include Boys
For the past nine years, the HPV vaccine has been offered free of charge in Ontario schools to girls in
grade 8 to help protect them from Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and related cancers.
Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, the program will expand to offer this cancer fighting vaccine to
all boys and girls in grade 7. If you have a son or daughter entering grade 7 this year, they will be of-
fered the HPV vaccine through a school-based clinic. For the majority of students, this vaccine will be
given in a series of two injections, one in the fall and one in the spring.
This will be the last school year that girls in grade 8 will be offered the HPV vaccine because in future
years the vaccine will only be offered in grade 7.
The HPV vaccine is considered very safe, and is highly effective.

October is International Walk to School Month Lace up your shoes or snap on those bike helmets for an active trip to school. If you live far from school, park a few blocks away and walk part of the trip. If you ride a bus take part by walking to your bus stop. Here’s a quick trivia question to have fun with at the dinner table tonight. Walking and wheeling to school can improve: A) Health B) Happiness C) Stress Level D) Grades E) Safety F) All of the above If you said F, you’re correct! Walking and wheeling to school has many benefits and those are just a few. (Source: ac-tivesaferoutes.ca) Tips to remember when walk or biking:
Look left, right and left again when crossing the street
Never run or dart out into the street or cross between parked cars
Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them and watch out for cars that are turning or backing up
It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible
Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
Watch out for cars coming out of driveways and alleys
If what you are doing has wheels, protect your brain – always wear a helmet
When riding your bike, ride in the same direction as the cars are driving

Parents/Guardians,
As class trips, D&T and sporting events arise, these allow for opportu-
nities for students to ride on the bus. We feel this is an appropriate
time to remind all of our families about bus safety.
Please be aware that bus safety rules are there to protect your child, the driver and all other
children so that they may have a safe ride.
Children are to remain seated at all times.
Children may talk quietly and only to those sharing their seat.
Children must keep their hands and feet to themselves.
Feet must stay out of the aisles so that no one falls during frequent stops.
Hands and heads must stay in the bus and not out the window.
Children need to listen to the bus driver and/or supervisor and follow his/her in-
structions at all times.
Backpacks/Bags are to be placed on their laps or on the floor in front of their seat.
Eating or drinking is unsafe and not allowed on the bus.
No throwing objects.
All items, including electronic games should remain in backpacks until the student is
at home.
By following these simple rules, children demonstrate safe practices and respect for the
driver and their fellow passengers. Bus reports may be written up by the driver for individu-
als who are acting unsafe on the bus. They are reviewed with your child by Mrs. Kosh or Mrs.
Mikolic.
It is important that you are aware that bus riding privileges will be removed from your child if
they continue to demonstrate the inability to be safe on the school bus. Students will be sus-
pended for a length of time from the bus or, in some instances, the privilege to ride the bus
will be removed for the remainder of the school year.
Our concern is for the safety of your child and all the other
children on the bus. The time you invest in discussing bus
safety with your child will make a difference in making the ride
to and from school a safe and more pleasant one.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Mrs. K. Kosh and Mrs. D. Mikolic
