EDITING Connected with camera work

A shot = An uninterrupted take where no cuts take place.

A scene = A selection of shots arranged to appear as though uninterrupted action is taking place in one moment in time.

EDITING Editing organises shots into order to create

meaning for the audience.

It creates continuity, rhythm and pace.

Editing is often invisible to the viewer so that the action is more believable – escapism.

EDITING Concerned with the manipulation of space

and time.

Time is manipulated by editing two shots together for the narrative to progress.

Space is manipulated by editing two synchronized action sequences = CROSS CUTTING/PARALLEL EDITING

TRANSITIONS Most editing is completed with cuts to appear

naturalistic.

Transitions are eye catching to the audience.

Fades can be used to show the passing of time.

Dissolves can be used to demonstrate a romantic mood.

SHOT – REVERSE – SHOTHTTP://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=F-BSF2X-AEE

Allows us to see characters speaking to each other.

Feels natural for the audience as we expect to see the faces of both people.

MATCH CUT A cut between two

familiar shots to make it appear smooth.

This can include continuity of direction or completed action.

This can make 2 shots between a change of location appear seemless.

JUMP CUT An abrupt cut between shots which feels awkward.

It can cause confusion about space and time and is often used for dramatic effect.

E.G. A shot of a person at work – CUT TO- A shot of the same person at work but wearing different clothes. This shows the passing of time.

piece of action.

E.G. A long shot of two men arguing – CUT TO – A close up of a hand grabbing a gun in a back pocket – CUT TO – A mid shot of one man pointing a gun at the other.

MOTIVATED CUT This follows a privileged point of view such as
