To add quick color to the yard,transplant seedlings of annualflowering plants into your garden.Although successful with anythingelse, many a gardener complainsabout failure with annual seedlingsor sowing by seed. It’s no big deal,just do it right from the start. Thefact that it’s a “small” plant or apacket of seed, does not justify aslapdash approach. The turnaboutof seasons is an ideal opportunityfor crop rotation in order tomaintain healthy symbiosis in thesoil. Some flowering annuals, likePetunias, can be planted all yearround, but please not in the samespot each time.

1. Soil gets organically depleted, sowe have to prepare beds withample compost (one can never“overdo” compost), as well as ahandful per square meter ofEfekto’s Vitaboost organicpe l l e t s . 3. GENTLY TEASE ROOTS APARTUse your fingers or a table fork toloosen the tangle of roots at thebottom of the root ball, whichencourages the roots to spreadout into the surrounding soil.

4. Spacing is important, at least 15– 20cm between seedlings.Planting too close together willrestrict airflow and could causefungus related diseases such aspowdery mildew, as well asmaking it difficult to spot harmfulpests at an early stage. Plantingholes should be slightly largerthan the root ball and at least thesame depth they grew in theircontainers.

5. Slightly firm soil around the rootswith your hands to remove any

air pockets and to ensure that theplant stands upright. Gentlywater the entire bed until it’sevenly moist but not muddy. Takecare not to wash away surfacesoil, leaving roots exposed.Monitor the situation the first fewdays to see if any roots areexposed and cover again lightly,using a small hand rake ortrowel.
