From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents The Junior School will be hosting ‘Grammar Boy for a Day’ on Tuesday 28 May. This is a wonderful chance for boys to visit and have a trial day in the Junior School from Prep to Year 6. If you have friends who are interested in a Toowoomba Grammar School education, commencing in the Junior School, you may wish to let them know about this opportunity. If you have a local business in town and would be happy to display some of the flyers for this event, could you please contact my secretary, Mrs Karen Miller to arrange receipt of this material.

Enrolments for 2020 and beyond At this point in time we have several year levels nearing capacity for 2020. If you have a younger son you wish to enrol in 2020 or 2021, I encourage you to contact the School promptly. The same applies should you have friends or relatives seeking to do the same. Staffing Mr Mike Sharpe, Deputy Head of Junior School, will be on extended leave from Thursday 16 May until the end of the term. Mr Sharpe will be away attending to some medical matters and I wish him well during this time. Mr Rob Jeffries, Head of Teaching and Learning, will be acting Deputy Head of Junior School during this time. Should you have any matters that you would normally direct to Mr Sharpe, can I encourage you contact Mr Jeffries or me during this time. School Bags Following consultation with an Occupational Therapist and then working with staff in the Uniform Shop, an additional school bag is now available for purchase. This smallest size backpack is aimed at our youngest students, better catering for their physical stature. The photographs of Hamish wearing this backpack best illustrate the size that is now available.

Eisteddfod The choral section of the Toowoomba Eisteddfod commences next week. As is traditionally the case, all Junior School boys will be involved in various sections. The key dates are as follows:

Friday 17 May, evening session (Tribe only)

Sunday 19 May, morning and afternoon sessions Correspondence was sent home recently providing specific session details. Singing in our all boys’ choirs known as Voiceworks or Tribe is an important part of the boys’ broader development. This is viewed as a team event, with all members of the team being expected to attend. I ask that parents make every effort to have all Junior School boys at their sessions on time and in Blazer Uniform. Parent and Son Camp We will be holding a camp for parents and their sons from Friday 17 May until Sunday 19 May, at Reflections on Lake Cooby. The date for this camp was scheduled last year, well before the Eisteddfod dates were announced. As such, boys attending this camp with their parents are exempt from Eisteddfod performances across this weekend. I thank Mr Bain and Mr Sharpe for their work over the past year moving this from a concept to reality. National Testing – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Boys in Year 3 and Year 5 will be involved in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) next week. Testing will occur on Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15, and Thursday 16 May. It is important that boys arrive at school on time as this National Testing will commence at 8.25am. Boys in these year levels who arrive after the bell will not be able to enter their classrooms and interrupt other students once the testing has commenced. I ask for the support of all parents ensuring boys arrive at school on time. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School

Active Kids are Smarter Kids National Walk Safely to School Day is on Friday 17 May, 2019. Now in its 20th year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. Australian children are becoming less active. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better academically and less likely to be obese or overweight. Walking regularly is a good exercise because it can be built in to our daily routines.

Glass Water Bottles I ask that the boys do not bring glass water bottles to school. In the past they have been dropped and shattered. Junior School Liaison Group There are a number of Year 12 students visiting the Prep to Year 6 classrooms during the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) session each day after lunch. It is an opportunity for the older boys to provide encouragement and support for the Junior School boys in their reading program. These Year 12 students have opted to do this in their own time and will assist with the reading programme in the classroom for the year. It involves one-on-one reading with a particular boy or a small group of boys in the class. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From Head of Teaching and Learning Maths Team Challenge This week 15 boys participated in the annual Maths Team Challenge held at St. Ursula’s College. The competition runs from Years 5 - 12, but is broken into sections. We sent three teams in the Primary section, a combined Year 5/6 team, a Year 6 team and a Year 5 team. The boys competed again students from many different school from our region. The competition consisted of two sections. First was a Team event, where all five team members work collaboratively to solve a number of questions over a 45-minute period. The second stage was a relay, where teams split into pairs and the fifth person was a runner. The runner changes every four questions. Once pairs believe that they have solved the problem, the runner takes their response to the group supervisor who lets them know if they are correct or not. If incorrect, then teams can choose to try again or elect to ‘pass’ the question. This part of the competition is very exciting and is often a student highlight of the day. The competition is a really good chance for boys to see that Maths can be competitive without it needing to be individualistic. Being able to discuss concepts, hypothesis ideas and combine thoughts and learning is how even stronger and deeper connections can be made within Mathematics. Our teams placed 4th, 9th and 17th on the day.

JET assessments from University of NSW Last term the boys in Years 3-6 were invited to be a part of a trial of a new assessment resource developed by the University of New South Wales. In addition to the changes that were made to their ICAS testing through the introduction of the REACH assessments, a class based assessment tool was developed called JET. In Term 1, we had the honour of being a part of the first trial of their assessment suite. The JET suite allowed teachers to select from well-developed and validated range of questions that link directly to the curriculum of each year level. The trial was successful in many ways and we have had the opportunity to provide feedback to make the suite more practical for schools. It is always lovely for our school to have opportunities such as these to ensure that we have access to the best possible products for our students. What it is Jet Assessments are integrated assessments for Years 3 to 6. All products in this series are linked to the Australian curriculum, and support sound classroom teaching and learning. Delivered online, Jet Assessments are comprised of high-quality objective items and are designed to be used multiple times a year. These assessments provide immediate feedback to guide teaching and learning. Series purpose:

provide an external, objective measure of student learning

provide a consistent measure of student growth

allow teachers to compare and contrast Jet Assessments data with school – based data

inform differentiated teaching

support teachers’ professional judgement and future learning. Source:https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/educational-assessments/products/jet-assessments/ Rob Jeffries Head of Teaching and Learning

Music News Choral Eisteddfod All choral groups have been rehearsing well, preparing for their upcoming eisteddfod performances. It is expected that all boys are in attendance for all eisteddfod performances. Although there are a large number of boys in our Voiceworks groups, singing in a choir is comparable to a team sport and each boy is a valued member of the group and plays an important role. It is most important that every member of the ensemble is present for our eisteddfod performances to ensure we perform at our best. If your son is unable to be in attendance due to prior commitments, I would appreciate you sending a note to either myself or his classroom teacher.
