VALE - GARY BROWN Greyhound Racing New South Wales is sad to advise the passing
of long time participant and administrator Gary Brown, aged 62,
suddenly on Wednesday evening.
Gary has been a part of the greyhound industry for more than four
decades after obtaining a trainer’s licence back in 1973, and
followed both his grandfather and father into the sport.
Over his time in greyhound racing, Gary was involved as an owner,
a trainer and a breeder.
A successful businessman, his passion for the sport and industry
extended into the administration side of the code, when he was
appointed, on a part-time basis, as chief executive of Newcastle
Greyhounds in 2016. He was also a founding member of The
Gardens, and was regularly involved with the working with the
Cessnock club.
During the greyhound ban, Gary was a strong supporter of the
NSW Greyhound Racing Industry Alliance, and played a major
role in organising several busloads of supporters to make the trip
from the Hunter Valley to Sydney to show their support at the
Alliance rallies.
Gary’s final runner, Chevy McGlinn, was a winner on the
Richmond card on Wednesday night.
As a mark of respect, The Gardens have named races in Gary’s
honour at their Saturday meeting.
The thoughts of GRNSW are with Gary’s family and friends.

Copley’s Corner
Blazer is back….. Andrew Copley
Brilliant young sprinter Mepunga Blazer is set to
make his return to the racetrack after a brief
retirement to stud.
A winner of 11 races from 22 starts including the
2017 Group 1 Maturity Classic at The Meadows, the
son of Barcia Bale and Mepunga Nicky will race at
Sandown Park on Thursday night as part of his
preparation for a crack at the heats of the Group 1
Winter Cup (520m) at Albion Park on June 28.
Mepunga Blazer’s return is further good news for
trainer Jeff Britton’s kennel, which snared the
$25,000 to-the-winner Group 3 Flying Amy Classic
(520m) at Albion Park last Thursday night with
Hasten Slowly.
Mepunga Blazer joined Britton in Queensland on
Thursday night and trialled at Albion Park,
overcoming a tardy start to record an almost
identical overall time to Hasten Slowly’s
scintillating 29.77sec.
He will exit box two in Race 8 tonight at Sandown at
8:34pm.
Mepunga Blazer has raced just 22 times, for 11
wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds and earned owner,
Barry Smith and trainer Jeffrey Britton $156,630 in
stakes.
High five for Bendigo
The Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association has
joined forces with local greyhound trainer Scott
Manning to raise money for local fundraiser Give
Me 5 For Kids.
Every time a greyhound wearing the yellow number
five rug wins a race at Bendigo during the month of
June, the Bendigo GRA is donating $55 to the cause,
a figure matched by Manning, making it $110 for
each winner.
“Our club formed a nice association with Southern
Cross Austereo seven years ago in supporting their
national fundraiser, Give Me Five for Kids,” said
Bendigo GRA Manager, Troy Harley.
“This initiative helps raise money for the local
children’s ward at the Bendigo hospital. We have
raised a tick over $25,000 so far. It started out as a
$600 donation but it has grown significantly.”
“We raised $8,000 last year and we are hoping to
raise $10,000 this year. We have incorporated a
couple of events in our fundraising efforts this year
including a Girls Night Out at the beginning of June
to kick things off, and we have the Bendigo Cup
heats on Sunday 1st July, where we’ll have a
superheroes day for the kids.”
Copley’s Corner
Brothers at it again!
Litter brothers, Rippin’ Sam and Tornado Tears
will renew acquaintances at Albion Park tonight
(Thursday).
Tornado Tears ($1.65) further entrenched his
standing as Australia’s premier stayer when
taking out the Group 1 Gold Cup (710m) at
Albion Park last Thursday night in a track record
41.33sec.
Trained in Victoria by Robert Britton, Tornado Tears
won by four lengths over Queenslander Jalapeno and
his litter brother and kennelmate, Rippin’ Sam, to
claim a $75,000 first prize.
Breeder and part-owner, Michael Ivers couldn’t have
been more impressed by Tornado Tears.
“He’s a pretty good animal and he did us very proud
last night. He took two lengths off Dashing Corsair’s
track record, which stood for eight years, and he’s
still only a youngster,” said Ivers, who lives in NSW
and bred a host of top-class stayers including Kobble
Creek, Space Star and Tip Top Tears.
“Tornado Tears is an excitement machine who
reminds me a little bit of Space Star. One thing
Tornado Tears has over Space Star though is that he
is a bit smaller (31kg compared to 35kg), and when
you’re running over long distances it’s a lot easier
when you’re carrying less weight,” Ivers said.
Ivers also praised Britton, who he said has become
“an excellent trainer of stayers.”
Tornado Tears has now won 11 races from 19 starts,
and this was his second Group 1 after taking out last
month’s RSN Sandown Cup (715m).
He will line up in the four-dog Group 3 Superstayers
Invitational (710m) tonight at Albion Park, where he
is the $1.35 TAB favourite ahead of Rippin’ Sam
($4), Jalapeno ($6) and Champagne Sally ($51).
Their litter’s record to date….
February 2016 litter
Fernando Bale x Tears Siam
Alotta Talk 13 starts 3-5- 0 $ 6,460
Fernando Express 33 starts 11-3-10 $ 92,695
Rippin’ Bartel 15 starts 3-2-2 $ 1,920
Rippin’ Sam 29 starts 12-7-5 $283,961

Greyhounds in the home
Worth reading.
Some sound advice from a recently joined FoGAPer with vast
experience with greyhounds. (they know who they are :-) )
As a greyhound owner, trainer and breeder for over 25
years, and a newcomer to this Facebook page, I am astounded at
some of the questions asked, and misinformation relayed, usually
with good intent.
Firstly, I am not suggesting anyone is asking stupid
questions, there is no such thing as one, but some of the questions
raised relating to some of the most basic things, suggests that there
is either too much misinformation, or not enough correct
information.
Firstly, greyhounds are purpose bred. They are used and
bred for what their bodies are designed for, to run and chase, fast.
The length of their nose and tail, colour, size and conformation is
basically irrelevant to their ability to the above purposes, hence
they have a genetic soundness, and a temperament that hasn’t been
compromised. However, some of the things I’ve been reading, I
feel could potentially compromise the dog, particularly with
people new to the breed.
Prior to becoming a pet, your Greyhound has never been
alone! This is the one key issue I believe is problematic for new
adoptees, or people unfamiliar with the breed. They have been
bred with and cared for by people in some cases who have 60-70
years of intimate knowledge of the breed!
Greyhounds are with their mother anywhere from birth up
to six weeks or three months, depending on how tolerant the brood
bitch is. They are then reared with either their siblings or pups of
the same age up until about 12 months old when they are broken
in, even then they are still in the company of other dogs, but never
alone! This continues on with spelling, pre-training and training,
the dogs are never really alone. So, when they are adopted into a
new home where they are in some cases the ONLY dog, so it is a
totally foreign and unfamiliar environment.
They are not shut down, they haven’t been mistreated, they
are not timid because they’ve been abused, they have not been
unloved, they have not been treated like robots, they have not been
deprived of human contact, the ‘have not’ list goes on and on and
on. Add to this, they are not sad, bored etc etc etc.
The lovely pictures you see of greyhounds on promotional
material is exactly what a greyhound is, an adaptable, relaxed
calm dog. They are like this at shows and expo’s, markets etc,
they are used to people and other dogs and noise and activity.
Some are more outgoing than others, just like every species on
earth, a quiet or timid dog does not automatically suggest it’s been
mistreated but the expectation it will be like this the day it is taken
home is preposterous!
Just because you’re excited about your new pet, doesn’t
mean that the dog automatically feels the same way. They may not
want to play with the new toy that you’ve brought, they may not
eat the food you give them, they may not relax for a few days, that
doesn’t mean they’ve been deprived of playtime, or they’ve been
denied any excitement or fun in their life, they are adjusting.
Zoomies aren’t an exclusive trait of a retired, adopted, rehomed
dog, they actually do this with their siblings, anytime from about 4
weeks old, give them time and they’ll do it regularly.
Greyhounds have had a life of routine, they know what
happens they moment you walk in the kennel door, they know the
routine backward. They know when it’s emptying out time, work
time, feed time, race day etc, and even when being moved into a
new kennel, they settle very quickly into routine as they don’t
know any different, and are confident in the expectations of a
racing kennel.
They’ve had a life of exercise, massages, hydrobaths, vet
checks, trips in the car, trips to the races, being in a kennel where
they feel contained and safe, first class food, rugs etc etc they want
for nothing and they are content and happy. The moment they
aren’t indicates a potential problem that is addressed immediately
by the trainer.
Suddenly in a new domestic environment where every
family member is ‘in their face’, taking photos, showing them
around, feeling they somehow need to provide them everything
that they may feel they’ve lacked, can be overwhelming.
Suddenly the routine is new, it can change from day to day, ie the
owner has to work back late, suddenly dinner is later, the dog isn’t
let out as often to go to the toilet, it’s by itself, maybe it seems
disconnected but it’s happy being by itself not fussed over, it’s
exercise routine being different and not as regimented, can be
overwhelming.
Some dogs crave attention and affection all the time, others
seek it when they desire. This doesn’t mean it will be like this
forever, it takes time, and like people some dogs cope better with
change.
We need to stop putting human emotions into dogs. We
need to stop feeling sorry for them and their previous life, in most
cases it has been amazing.
They’ve been looked after around the clock and had 24/7 care,
they’ve done what their instinct and genetic disposition has
allowed them to do. They haven’t needed rescuing, all they need is
someone with patience and dare I say, common sense to allow
them to adjust at their speed, in their time, quietly and
consistently.
They need time and space to be left alone to settle, they
need understanding. When the breed and the basic needs of the
breed are understood, then
anyone can enjoy what this
wonderful breed has to offer.
There is a wealth of
knowledge out there, and on
this page.
There are people who have
been in the sport for decades
and are elated to know that the
secret is out about how
wonderful greyhounds can be,
if only they are understood,
and it’s not that difficult, it
just takes time and the correct
information coming from
credible sources, and this will
preserve the integrity of the
breed.

FOSTER A GREYHOUND:
There are many greyhounds who need a little more
assistance to help them settle into pet life
They fall into two categories
Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track
and need help to pass their GAP assessment
OR
Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their
GAP assessment
These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the
only difference is that need a little more help to
transition into pet life
The reality is that without foster carers some of
these dogs are at risk
