Christmas time is inthe air and everone isprepared for the season offamil movies and joousstories. With Frosty the SnowMan and Rudolph the RedNose Reindeer just abouteverone is familiar withclassic Christmas movies, but how man classif Home

Alone as a Christmas timemovie? What does a storabout a oung bo beingleft at home alone with noadult supervision and thechance to do everthinghe could possibl imaginehave to do with Christmas?

Kevin, the oung childin the movie, is accidentallleft behind when the familgoes on a vacation forChristmas. fter he realizeshe has been abandoned,Kevin freaks and tries tond his famil; looking in

places such as under thebed and in the ard, Kevinquits searching after a while.

This is when ever kidsdream begins. No adults,no school, no plan, andno bedtime. The perfectChristmas ift for just aboutever child in merica.Kevin is able to walk in thepark alone at night, make amess out of the house, andbuild traps all over withoutgetting into trouble.

an families wouldhave learned from the rst

time the left Kevin home, but not this one. When thefamil goes to the airportso the can go to Florida,Kevin gets mied up in thechaos and is left behindin New york. This is whenKevin runs into Harr andarv, the burglars fromthe rst movie, just afterthe escaped from prison.

    So back to the question,what does being left homealone have anthing todo with Christmas? It haseverthing to do with it;

its the greatest gift togive. child at home, bthemselves, is classied astheir best Christmas ever.No rules, no parents, andno annoing scheduleto live b. The best partof Home Alone is that itteaches the importance ofbeing with famil. Kevinsfamil doesnt all get along, but after what happenedou see how ecited thewere to see each other.

    Home Alone epitomizesthe traditional famil

Christmas. With ears offamilies watching Kevinstruggle through theholidas, this movie isdestined to be classiedas a classic Christmasmovie. longside Rudolph,Frost, and The ittleDrummer Bo, Kevinwill forever be groupedwith these other favoriteChristmas time movies.

    Staff WriterThere are many

characteristics of Christmasthat make it so lovable. Thereare the scrumptious meals, the marvelous decorations, the exchange of fancy gifts, and the reunion of families. All of these concepts arespectacular, yet one mustbe superior.

Although the foods, such as gingerbreadcookies and turkey, aredelicious, the meals are

usually not ones favoritepart of Christmas. Manyindividuals look forward tothe meals, but they are notthe highlight of Christmas.Christmas is also the timeof year when peopledecorate their homes withbright lights and snazzydecorations. This is also afactor of Christmas that isenjoyed, but not favorite.

Now were getting tothe good stu: Presents. What seems to be the mostpopular part of Christmas

    is the exchange of gifts.

Theres no better feelingthan receiving a marvelousgift that you desired, andat the same time, watchingsomeone open one of thefantastic gifts you gavethem. Dont get me wrongpresents are great, but thebest part of Christmas hasyet to be revealed.

The most fantasticalelement of Christmas is thegathering of families. It isalways great to see lovedones, but Christmas bringsa whole new aspect to thefamily reunion concept. Now that there are peoplefor you to celebrateChristmas with, the meals

are larger, the decorationsare more complex, and thegifts are more plentiful.

When presentedwith all of these aspects ofChristmas, Ryan Hawkins,

junior, claimed, I think thecombination of all of theseis what makes Christmasreally great. Tyler Skabs

Thomas says, Being withfamily, even with family youdont see often, is the bestpart. Overall, being withfamily makes it feel morelike Christmas.

Despite individualopinions, Christmas is adelightful holiday for all toenjoy.

Have you heard aboutthat scrumptious milk, eggs, and sugar holiday drinkknown as eggnog? Whodoesnt like eggnog? Me,I dont like eggnog. Raweggs, yuck, not to mentionhow too rich and creamythe texture is, eww makeme puke.

    Some people really do

enjoy this mouth wateringdrink during the holidays.

They may take pleasure insitting around with theirfamily in front of the rewith Christmas music in thebackground and a friendlyconversation making itsway through the warmedair, with a scrumptious cupof eggnog in their hands. One thing that many peoplemay not know is how manycalories are in a cup of lipsmacking eggnog. Therecan be nearly three hundredand fty calories in a singlecup. Just think if you were todrink two cups of this, thatslike seven hundred calories. Not to mention there isabout 9.5 grams of fat percup.

These are some of thereasons that I dont likeeggnog because of thecalories and how manygrams of fat per cup there is.But the main reason of whyI truly dont like eggnog isthe taste, it tastes like thick, heavy cream with nutmegand that is in truth way toorich of a taste for me.

This holiday seasonwhen you go to reach forthat thick and creamy cupof eggnog, sitting in frontof the re with your friendsand family, enjoy it.

All year round, holidayswarm the heart; they bringa sense of joy that nothingelse can compare to.Everyone has an opinionon which holiday is theirfavorite, but I believeChristmas is the best.

Of course, Halloweenis an amazing holiday andmakes one feel like a kidagain, and everyone hasthe chance to eat somecandy and wear somethingcompletely epic. As forChristmas, its a holiday thatmakes one feel all warm andhappy with its fun Christmassongs and cozy res tosnuggle up to with a nicecup of hot chocolate. Towhich holiday may be betteris very debatable, each onehas its own uniqueness.Junior Ryan Earl states, Ilove Christmas, because Ilove presents and also itsgreat time to spend withall my family. Christmas isalso a time to go all out andeat a lot of food and sweettreats. One could easily eattreats on Halloween, butwith Christmas one gets toeat real food not bags full ofcandy.

Halloween is a greatholiday, but sometimeswalking around in the dark, with empty bags waitingto be lled with candyby random strangers isa little creepy and couldpossibly be dangerous.Mark Dolecheck, junior, says, I like Halloween andChristmas, but Christmas isbetter because I get a lot of

time out of school! You be the own judgeto which holiday is the best, but all in all Christmas is theway to go, after all whenChristmas is over a new yearis celebrated!

    X-Mas or Halloween

    Whenever the holidays

    roll around, there are always

    two things on everyones

    mind; food and presents.

Well I love the present of

    holiday food. It only comes

twice a year, and I mean

cmon I intend to enjoy and

savor every bit of it. The main dishes

    families prepare are the

    typical turkey with stung

    or the heavenly ham. I

    myself prefer ham. With all

    of its seasons and delectable

    avors that the turkey just

    cannot measure up to.

    The turkey can be

    dry, and only have some

    seasonings and there is all

of the dark meat that no

one wants to claim as theirs.

    There is the usual stung

    and herbs that make the

    turkey barely bearable.

    Then there is the

    succulent ham, with all of

    the avors from the juices.

    The glaze only makes it

better, but to top it o is

    the pineapple that sits

    upon this divine creation.

This gives it not only theavor from the glaze, but

    the sweetness from the

    pineapple. Then one can

    also eat the pineapple and

that in itself is a concoction

of avors that can make any

    mouth water. It cannot dry

    out, and it tastes amazing

no matter what it is topped

    with from the feasting table.

I love ham, and I dislike

    turkey. In my family, we

have both. To satisfy all of

    the hungry tummies that

line up at the table. There is

plenty of food, so no matter

what is to be had, everyone

will leave with a full happy

    belly. Tis the season for

    food, presents, and what

    matters the most, family.

    Happy holidays!

There is a lot ofcontroversy over the Nestand Hawk Shop. Everyonehas their favorite betweenthe two. So how do youknow which one to choose?

Its not too hard; just choosethe one that oats yourboat.

I like the Nest becausethey are full of sweetgoodies for me to eat in themorning, stated Ramona, senior. Yes, the Nest doeshave a lot of sweet treats. Ilike the Nest because theydo not charge taxes and theyhave more snack optionsand the brownies are huge!exclaimed Leslimar Partida,

sophomore. By the way,the Nest does charge taxes;its already added on. AnnaArutyunova, senior, claims,I just love the Nest becausethey have coee and moreoptions. Its just deliciousand great!

    Others, like Brandon

Collins, senior, love theHawk Shop. Brandon statesthat the, Hawk Shop isbetter. I help run it. TheHawk Shop also has avariety of options. ExclaimsKylie Gibson, sophomoreHawk Shop, becausethere is more variety andbaked potatoes now! I

just love those! exclaimsKylie Gibson, sophomore.Indeed, baked potatoesare great and can only be

found at the Hawk Shop.To add another vote for theHawk Shop, Chelsea ONeal,

junior, states that she likesthe Hawk Shop becausethey have better food andmake deals.

Its a mixed decisionabout which shop to choose.

Seriously though, go foryour favorite. The nest doeshave a lot of great snacksand they are keeping thesurprises coming, but youcant nd baked potatoesand slushies anywhere elsearound the school. If youseem to be having a hardtime choosing, just get onething from both shops andyoull be happy.

The winter months areslowly but surely sneak-ing up on us. With snowstorms and windy days inour midst what is CanyonRidge going to do to keepdown the spread of germs?

The steps are simple, butwith consistency we cankeep our students frombeing home sick and we

    can have a healthy CRHS.

The most common wayto keep down the germs is towash your hands. Hand san-itizer is an easy substitute, but most of the dispensersarent full anymore and thepush handle is very dirty.

Take a minute betweensome classes and every timeyou use the rest room toproperly wash your handswith soap and warm water.

    Covering your mouth

when you cough or sneezeis crucial to keeping ourstudent body germ free.

Turn into your shoulderor elbow to shield thegerms from those who arearound you. Just remem-ber that after you sneezeor cough always wash yourhands as soon as possible.

Staying home whenyou are sick is the best

way to keep your germs at

home. Dont come to schoolif you are sick and make sureyou are symptom free for24 hours before you comeback. Get plenty of rest anddrink lots of uids so you willbe good as new in no time.

Its almost impossibleto not get sick, but by do-

    ing these simple things we

can keep down the absentrate for sick students. Noone wants your germs, so

just remember, cover yourmouth, wash your hands, and stay home if you aresick. Lets keep CanyonRidge germ free this winter.

Be smart, dont spread germsErica Stewart

Junior, Kaleb McCall demonstrates the proper way to sneeze without spreading germs. Sneezing into the elbow

keeps germs from contaminating others whereas sneezing into the air can make another sick. Hand sanitizer

and tissue is available throughout the school. Individuals are encouraged to use both.

    Salvation Army bell ringers

Many students have feltthe eects of the economyin Twin Falls, Idaho. Eventhough the recession hasbeen declared over, stu-dents still have problems athome with nancial stress. Many cannot aord theextra activities some maytake for granted. The reces-sion has stolen funds savedup to buy school clothes, groceries, and even Christ-mas presents. Everyonein the Magic Valley needsto be aware of the lackof money and watch for

the bell ringers from theSalvation Army this year.

Many families benetfrom the donations madeto the Salvation Army, and

donations may even helpfamilies that belong toCRHS students. Anythinghelps, and every donation

    is appreciated immensely.

There are many stores par-ticipating by having bellringers stand out in frontof their buildings including:

Albertsons, Smiths, K-mart,D & B Supply, both of theWalgreens, Kings, MagicValley Mall, and Shopko.

Look out for the bellringers and rememberthat it may help a friendwho is in need and hasnttold anyone. Donationsmay also benet someonewho lives across the street.

The Salvation Army ap-plies the money to food forneedy families, turkeys forChristmas dinners, toys foryoung children who havenothing, and help for any-one who honestly needs it.

Donating a few centshere and there really doeshelp the charity. Anyonecan help, just drop a fewcoins in the bucket whileentering or leaving a store.

    Idaho election results

    On November 2nd, Ida-

hoans came out in bunchesto exercise their right tovote and let their voicesbe heard. It is safe to say,the Republicans thankthem. Every state-widerace found the Republicannominee taking the victory, making our state the red-dest in the entire nation.

The most heated Ida-ho race was for Governor.Butch Otter (R) defeatedKeith Allred (D) 59.2% to32.8%, a much wider margin

than anticipated. I votedfor Otter, personally, saidBraden Coleman, Senior.

For Senator, Mike Crapobeat out Tom Sullivan in alandslide. Republicans: Raul

    R. Labrador and Mike Simp-son were elected U.S. Repre-sentatives, and Ben Ysursawon Secretary of State.

In one of the clos-er decisions, Tom Luna(R) defeated Stan Olson(D) for Superintendentof Public Instruction.

Brad Little beat El-don Wallace for Lieuten-ant Governor as well.

Every amendmentthat was presented to theState Constitution waspassed, some by a wid-er margin than others.

Idaho has alwaysbeen a particularly redstate, but this years elec-tions took this expectationto an extreme, with not asingle Democrat able tobreak through for a victoryin their respective races.

    Winter driving

Driving is scary enoughas is let alone adding snow

and ice to the roads. Carwrecks happen every dayand they only get worsewhen winter hits. Not onlycan winter driving bringharm to theperson driv-ing, but totheir car aswell. Thereare plenty ofprecautionsto take whendriving inthe snow

    to keepone safe.

N o te v e r y o n eis patientwhen itcomes tod r i v i n g ,people get enjoyment outof being dangerous andtaking risks for instance,Junior R.C. Adema states, Ilike to go into random, icyparking lots and turn on thee-break, take a sharp turn,

and enjoy the ride. Its fun! This is denitely not ad-vised when driving in win-ter let alone any other time.

All tips are helpful forwinter driving, drive withheadlights, do not use cruise

control, stay away from thecar driving in front, dontpass a snow plow, and stayin four wheel drive. These

are just a few tips to stayingsafe when driving throughbad weather. Junior Mcca-leb Rees says, I love drivingin the snow, its fun and ex-hilarating because you dont

    know whatwill hap-pen next!

    As al-ways a lot ofpeople ndthemselvesg e t t i n gstuck in thesnow the

best way toget out ofthis, is eas-ily turn yourw h e e l sfrom sideto side this

helps snow get out of theway, at the same time barelypush your foot on the gaspedal and ease forward.Make sure not to spin thewheels this will only getone in the snow deeper.

    Getting hurt and stuck

is completely preventable just take the right stepsfor a secure drive. The de-lightful white snow hasfallen and stuck so staysafe everyone becausewinter is here to stay.

Give a child Joy, adopt one

Every year the holi-days come and go. One

gets to have a nice relax-ing Christmas Eve with thefamily. Playing games andsipping on cocoa, eggnogor some spiced apple cider. So peaceful. Then its o tobed for the little ones thatdream of the candy that willbe over owing from theirstockings and the presentsthat Santa will be leavingthem.

When awoken, theirtiny little bodies will belled with excitement as

they dash to the living roomfor the Christmas treasures. As they tear through thestockings, the candy and lit-tle knick knacks fall on theirlaps. Gobbling up as muchas they can before beinghanded their presents.

Eyes glued to the glis-tening paper that lines thedelicately wrapped pres-ents. Not caring about rip-ping the paper, thrashingthrough the boxes to get tothe ultimate prize. Hearts

lled with happiness andjoy, knowing that Santa hadnot forgotten them.

Now try to imaginethe family across the street.Waking up, and heading tothe living room, there isnt

a tree. No decorations. NoChristmas cheer. Where thetree would be, there is a cor-ner. No presents, only emp-

ty carpet. For the family thatlives here, the only Christ-mas present they will be re-ceiving this year, is the oneof warmth and a place to laytheir head. If they even havethat luxury.

Christmas is a hard holi-day to get through. With all

of the holiday hassles ofgetting those last minutegifts and the ridiculous pric-es of the new and impres-sive games and toys thatall of the children dream ofreceiving.

Not all of the parents inones community can aordto do anything for Christ-

mas, other than payingthe bill, and hoping to getthrough another night.

It is sad, but it is allaround. More than onewould think. When you goto the mall to buy gifts for

a loved one, there is a tree. One that holds the names ofchildren that live in the val-ley whom are less fortunate

and would be so happy toreceive a present, or evenjust a Christmas dinner.

Students o many agesall over the country havehated the snowball rulethat exists in most schools.Snowball throwing seemsnatural to the childrenand many think that thisrule is absurd becausethey do not mean to hurtothers. Snowball fghts canbe un, entertaining, andvery enjoyable, but everyyear students abuse theopportunity to practice saesnowballing and snowballsbecome dangerous. Forthat reason they have beenoutlawed in all TFSD schoolsites.

    Snowballs that are

thrown are rozen and canbe extremely hard, causing

pain to the victim o thethrow. Light, easy tossesarent oten the way youngkids throw snowballs andheaving a snowball as astas possible at another is asure way to cause physicalinjuries. Students at schoolsall over the country havebeen scolded and havegotten in a lot o trouble orthrowing snowballs at otherchildren.

When asked istudents are allowed tothrow snowballs, every

elementary school in TwinFalls responded with adefnite no. Mrs. Olmstead, the principal at LincolnElementary School, said,

Students can get hit inthe ace with hard packed

snowballs or maimed withice. Sometimes studentseven put rocks into them.

The saety reasonsbehind this resolute rule areobvious and well ounded.Students who have been hitwith snowballs have walkedinto Mrs. Olmsteads ocewith red eyes, obviousred marks on the acewhere snowballs have hit, according to Mrs. Olmstead.

The principals at everyschool hate to see theirstudents get hurt and have

enorced this rule or everystudents protection

Even students atCanyon Ridge are not

allowed to throw snowballs. The possibility o injuries

prevents any o the schoolocials allowing a snowballfght to commence. KeriSchwarz, a sophomore at

Canyon Ridge, agrees withthe rule and remarked, Its

a good rule because I dontwant to get smashed in theace with a snowball!

Canyon Ridge has its frst snow day

Its been a long wait, being that the last snowday was in the winter o

the 2003-2004 schoolyear, up until November19, when our thirst wasfnally quenched. It wasannounced that the TwinFalls School District hadcanceled school that veryday. Students excitedly

jumped or joy. Some ranoutside to build snowmen;some plunged to their PS3s,and some just scurried backto bed.

Rumors have beenspread across the yearsthat Wiley Dobbs,

superintendent o schools, has reused to give awaya snow day. Since theserumors were started, therehas been between little orno hope and expectationor a snow day. The newswas shocking the night oNovember 18, when parentswere notifed by telephonethat there would be no

school the next morning. This was the frst snow daythe district has had in sevenyears.

In order or a snow dayto occur the bus companyand the Superintendent o

schools must determinethe roads are unsae or thebuses to travel. Said VicePrincipal Mike Gemar, Thisdecision is made airly earlyin the morning.

To look at the likelinesso another snow day we

would frst have to haveover 50% o the studentbody unable to travel toschool, along with unsaebus transportation. Nowlook at the act that over50% o Canyon Ridge

students live within walkingdistance. Our chanceso another snow day thisyear is very scarce so letsconsider ourselves luckywith the frst snow day inseven years.

These can be very stressul. However i you

study during the holidays, and dont let yoursel go,you will surely pass anyand all o them. Here aresome easy study tips toget through the holidayswithout overstressingyoursel on break.1. Write down some terms

on note cards. Leavethem in a place thatyou will go to oten.Every time you go overthere, pick one up and

read it. Once read, takeit to another placeand start another pile.Doing this one willbe learning withoutreally even trying.

    2. Leave a list on theridge, every time onegoes over there, doone thing on the list.

This will make it sothat everything onthe list will get done.

    3. Write the names and

    defnition o some

    vocabulary words on

items around yourhouse. When yougo to those itemslooking or something, you will read it andthereore learn it aster.

    4. Reading may not bethe astest way to

learn, but it defnitelyis very eective. Iyou read it more thanonce it is more likelyto stick in your mind.

    5. Using rhythm tolearn is also a very

eective method. When one uses rhythmthey catch on aster, and have an easier

    time rememberingthe inormation.

    6. Review, Review,Review! This is alsoone o the astest waysto remembering andactually learning theinormation. I onetakes good notes whilepaying attention inclass, you can review

them over the break asmany times as it takes.

    7. Have someone youknow create a practicetest with inormationrom your notes thatyou think may be onthe real test. Have ananswer key handy sothat you can take the

practice test and seehow you do. Study everyone you got wrong,so that you wont miss

    them on the actual test.

    8. Teach one o your

riends. I one teachessomeone they know, not only will the otherperson be inormedo what is going on,but the teacherwill also be retainingthe inormation

with more accuracy.9. I one studies or 20

minutes, and thenputs the inormationdown, then comesback to it and studiesor another 20 minutes

the inormation will bemore easily attained.

    10. Exercise. This is not onlya good way to keep in

shape, but it also takesa lot o ones stress awayrom the crackdowno the studying.

Uggs vs. Bear PawsAs the snow and cold

are coming quickly, itsgetting noticeable that

more and more people arestarting to break out theirboots. Sure, boots come inall kinds o shapes, sizes, and even brands, but themost popular year-roundare Uggs and Bear Paws.

Everybody knows whatUggs are, although somehave never heard o BearPaws, there really isnt adierence. However, whileUggs run or about $160,pairs o Bear Paws can bepurchased or only $120.Also, Bear Paws are a lotbetter made, consideringthat Uggs generally wearout ater about a monthor so i worn constantly, with Bear Paws lasting upto 2 years without so muchas a little rip in the seam.

Both Uggs and BearPaws are made o sheepskin, but Uggs have oam soleswhile Bear Paws haverubber soles. However, the

Ugg boot is manuacturedin Australia and shippedall over, and Bear Paws aremade here in the U.S. So, isomething goes wrong withthe buyers pair o Uggs, they have to be sent back toAustralia, and then shippedback. Although ones pair oBear Paws boots could easilybe repaired, and or a lotcheaper, here in the states.

The Bear Paw Companyworks hard to sustain eco-riendly materials, andthey do what they can to

prevent wasting products. For instance, they recycle, and this is something thatis expected o all theiremployees. The companyconstantly evaluateshow much packaging

and shipping is required, and then they use theirown recycled materialsto make it happen.

    The term ugg was

originally used to reer toAustralian boots made osheepskin. The boots aremade o sheepskin becauseit is naturally thermostatic. It is meant to keep warmin the winter, and cool inthe winter. It is also madeinto boots because oits durability. Ugg bootswere never a hot topicuntil big actresses andother celebrities startedwearing them. Then ocourse they got big, andwere more demanded.

No matter theweather, boys and girlsall over are bringin outthe boots. Whether theybe Uggs, Bear Paws, orany other brand, bootsare a never-ending trend.

The snow has fallen,Christmas trees are ondisplay, children lay awakeat night anticipating Santasarrival, and franklytisthe season. To many, theirhomes are simply deckedout in the nest of Christmasdcor and truly possess theseasons joy. For others, thecelebration of decoratingfor Christmas is put o untilthe very last second due toprocrastination. Fear notfellow procrastinators,

In case you might notbe in favor of the traditionalChristmas decorations, youre in luck, I havediscovered a simple wayto spice up any room withyuletide cheer. Using simplematerials such as Styrofoamand glitzy garlands, youreon your way to making a

Christmas tree centerpiece. The materials you will

need are as follows: Two 12inch foam cones, wrappingpaper, 3-4 feet ribbon andsequin garland that matchesthe wrapping paper, 1 inchsequins, 3-4 feet beadedgarland, two sets of 3 roundbeads, and 1 inch roundpunch (optional).

Now that you haveall the necessary supplies, you are ready to makegarland trees by followingthese directions: 1. Coveryour cone with wrappingpaper by using glue or craft

pins. 2. Add the garland byattaching one end of ribbonand sequin garland to thetop of cone with pins. Wraparound cone until you reachthe bottom.

Once this is done youshould glue both ends ofthe garland. 3. Fill in theblank spaces of the cone

with sequins, beads, andmore garland. 4. To nish,

glue a stack of three beadson top of the cone. And ta-da! You now behold yourevery own set of eye catchinggarland trees.

C h r i s t m a sis celebrated almosteverywhere around theworld in many dierentways. For centuries wecelebrate holidays incertain ways, but one may

wonder why we celebratethe way we do and howthese ideas originated.

Everyone loves tokiss under the mistletoe;its an excuse to nally kissthat special someone. Theancient Celtics believedmistletoe had healingpowers; they used themistletoe to ward oevil spirits. The Romansthought it was a symbolof peace; they wouldlay their guns under themistletoe and embrace. The

custom we celebrate todaypossibly originated withthe Scandinavians; theybrought the plant together

with Frigga, the goddess oflove. After kissing under themistletoe, it was promisedto bring one happinessand good luck the nextyear. Junior Josh Gonzalezstates, I like kissing girlsunder the mistletoe ifthey are hot enough.

    Everyone lovesreceiving Christmas cards.

It sends a message fromsomeone that only wordscan describe. The rstChristmas card began inEngland in 1843 with ameaning that not everyoneagreed with. The rst cardsent out had a picture witha group of men drinkingalcohol. Mixing Christmaswith alcohol did not makesome happy. FreshmanJustin Bohr states, I likeChristmas cards becauseI like Christmas and I likethe cards with music. To

this day Christmas cardsare improving; insteadof just a plain whitecard with thoughtful

words, technology hasmade it where peoplecan record a messageinto the card instead ofwriting down a long, meaningful paragraph.

Candy canesare those sweet treatsthat not everyone canresist. When they began, they were only in use to

decorate the holiday treeby the Europeans; butas the years went by, thesweet treats were givento keep children quiet atceremonies and nativityscenes. Staff WriterWinter has arrived,

everyone knows what thatmeans; snowball ghts!Snowball ghts involvemuch strategy, like theright tools, the right snow, and a good snow fort.

    To start o the

right snow is needed, thekind that sticks togetherand is a little wet and nottoo powdery. Snowballsneed to be tightly packedso they will have quick ytime. The quicker y timethey have can make all thedierence when it comesto throwing a snowball.Make sure there is a snowshovel nearby when havingan extreme battle. Alsoa very good constructedsnow fort is necessary towin an epic snowball ght.

There are manydierent types of snowforts, but only one will wina snowball ght. The rightheight is a very essentialpart of the snow fort. It

needs to be high enoughto cover your body, but nottoo high because you stillneed to be able to throwthe snowballs over it. Thefort needs to be big enoughto t your snowballs, andshovel. The fort shouldgo all the way aroundsomewhat resembling acage. This fort is especiallygood for a free for all ght.

Freshman, CaitlynJoslin quotes, I have neverbeen in a real free for allght, only just againstmy siblings. I have beenin a huge snowball ghtagainst my neighbors, ofcourse we won, but if wewere more prepared andhad a snow fort we couldhave demolished them.

If we haveanother snow day thisyear, get outside and havea snowball ght. Try outthis snow fort and see if it

works to win a snowballght. Just rememberno snowball ghts on

    CR welcomes District IV Drama

Whether it was a big, stued purple chair orstudents dressed all inpantomime black, dramastudents from all overDistrict IV were in evidenceon November 13th, 2010,here in the hallowed hallsof Canyon Ridge High in

order to compete in variousdrama events for the day.District Drama competitionis the precursor todetermine those who willcompete in dramatic eventsat the state level, andcompetition was erce andfun for roughly 250 dramastudents, coaches and

judges involved that day.Canyon Ridge had its

own drama team competingin a variety of events:Ensemble Pantomime,Serious Ensemble,Humorous Ensemble,Humorous Solo, OriginalHumorous, Original Serious, and Costume Design.Students demonstratedtheir skill in either anacting or technical event, and their performancewas a reection of therehearsal process done inIntroduction to Theatre,Intermediate Acting orAdvanced Acting. Studentswere scored in each roundof performance by a judge, and each round gavestudents an opportunity toimprove and receive points

toward the nal outcome. The CRHS Drama team

presented itself with poiseand professionalism. Allstudents were given eithera superior or excellentrating; one ensemble andone solo entry in particularreceived honors above therest: Allyson Humbergerin Humorous Solo is analternate to State Drama,

while the EnsemblePantomime studentstook rst place at DistrictDrama and earned a placeto compete in Nampa atState Drama on December3rd and 4th. Jake Silvester, TJRichardson, Madi Mason,Ben Keller and Brady Skinnerrepresented Canyon Ridgethis year at State Drama.

When asked how hefelt about State Dramacompetition and thelikelihood of success, JakeSilvester said, I have mixed

feelings about State. Itwas stressful yet amusinglast yearbut denitelya good time! This year it[Pantomime Ensemble]should do pretty well, but it depends on whateveryone else brings to thetable. I have condencethat we will break intothe semi-nal round.

So, if you see a dramakid walking down thehall, ask him or her howthey did at either DistrictIV competition or State.

It is almost a guaranteethat the answer will beentertaining and enjoyable.

Every day millions ofadults, teens, and childrenlisten to country music. Some are farmers someare businessmen, someare politicians, and someare students. Some live in

Idaho, and others live inFlorida; many things thatseparate us all, but onething unites listeners everyyear, the CMA Awards.

The CMAs arelegendary; in the rstever award show EddyArnold, Jack Greene, andLoretta Lynn were thestars. This year, in the44th annual award show, the major stars includedMiranda Lambert, BlakeShelton, Lady Antebellum, and Brad Paisley.

As most of us know, the Entertainer of the Yearaward is a big one; to manyits the highest honor. Thisyears winner happenedto also be one of the hostsfor the third year in a row,Brad Paisley. Brad won theaward for the rst time overMiranda Lambert, LadyAntebellum, Keith Urban, and the Zac Brown Band.

One of the next awardsin line for the highesthonors is; Male Vocalist of theYear. This years nominees

were Dierks Bentley, GeorgeStrait, Blake Shelton, Brad

Paisley, and Keith Urban. Inthe past, George Strait haswon 22 CMA Awards, somany thought the legendwould take it again, othersthought the rising starKeith Urban would win,or maybe Brad, Blake, orDierks. When it came downto the wire tensions wererunning high and nally it

was announced that BlakeShelton was the winner.

It appeared that inthis years awards, BlakeSheltons ance, MirandaLambert was denitelythe super star; she wasnominated nine times insix categories. Mirandatook home the trophyin Album of the Yearwithher hit CD, Revolution,Song of the Year with Thehouse that built me, MusicVideo of the Year with Thehouse that built me, and

one of the highest honors,Female Vocalist of the Year.

Another successfulcountry group was the hittrio, Lady Antebellum. Theyproudly took home theVocal Group of the Year, andthe Single of the Year withtheir audience-favorite,Need You Now. The groupwas also nominated forEntertainer of the Year, Albumof the Year, Song of the Year, and Music Video of the Year, unfortunately falling short.

    Other winners were

Sugarland for Vocal Duoof the Year, The Zac Brown

Band for New Artist of theYear, and Blake Sheltonfeaturing Trace Adkinswith Hillbilly Bone forMusical Event of the Year.

As always, liveperformances are a hugepart of the Country MusicAssociation Awards. Thisyear Carrie Underwood,Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton,

Miranda Lambert, GeorgeStrait, Zac Brown Bandfeat. Alan Jackson, KennyChesney, Taylor Swift,Sugarland, Kieth Urban,Reba McEntire, Jason Aldeanand Kelly Clarkson, BradPaisley, Lady Antebellum, and Kid Rock nishing othe show with Born Free.

Many have enjoyedwatching the CMAs as farback as they can remember, and each year it amazinglykeeps getting better andbetter. Will the legends like

George Strait, Reba, andMartina MacBride continueto shine? Will MirandaLambert, Blake Shelton, and Lady Antebellumcontinue moving up theladder of country music? Will new faces such as

The Band Perry, Love and Theft, and Eric Churchget their break through? Will new bands emerge?

These are all questionsthat will most certainly beanswered in next years 45thannual CMA Awards, but

    until then, keep it country.

    44th annual CMA Awards

Editorial: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a joke

For years theRock and Roll Hall of Famehas acted as if it was thepinnacle of any popularmusicians career, but whatseems to be lost on theminds of the general publicis that they have blatantlydisrespected every hardrock and heavy metal bandthat has ever come close to

their hallowed halls. Theirlogic is ridiculous. Whena building is dedicated tohonoring the history ofrock music, shouldnt theinduction process be basedon inuence that the artistshave had on other musiciansas well as popularity?

Lets rst takea look at some of themost shocking bands tobe snubbed by the Hall:Kiss, Rush, Journey, AliceCooper, Cheap Trick, BadCompany, Peter Frampton,

Heart, T-Rex, Bon Jovi,Foreigner, The Red HotChili Peppers, Boston, IronMaiden, REO Speedwagon,Megadeth, Styx,Def Leppard,Motley Crue,Guns N Roses,Deep Purple,Judas Priest,Poison, and thelist continuesto grow. I dontneed to arguethese bandscases to be

r e c o g n i z e dforever, but I willsay that each ofthese incredible,multi-platinum,arena-packingacts have hadan enormousinuence onanyone in rock music today.Without them, rock and rollmay have died altogether.Yet, not a SINGLE ONEof them, except AliceCooper, was even on the

ballot to be consideredto enter the Hall this year!Who could possibly

be good enough to beat out

these legends of the genre?Abba beat them out.Madonna beat them out.Run DMC beat them out. LLCool J is on the ballot thisyear over them. Since when

are any of these peopleconsidered rock and rollmusicians? Has one everheard of Mort Shurman,

    S p o o n e rOldham, or

The Dave ClarkFive? Me either, but apparently, according tothe people atthe Hall, theyhave had moreeect on thelives of fansand sound of

future musiciansthan any of therock gods thatare mentioneda b o v e .

    E v e nwhen a banddeservingly getsinto the Rock

and Roll Hall of Fame, itis after years upon yearsof complete disrespect.Metallica, who releasedtheir rst album in 1983 andbecame the most popular

metal band in history, was ignored until 2009.Van Halen, possibly themost important rock bandever behind Led Zepplin, released their debut albumin 1978, and changed thesound of not just rock butall popular music. Theywere shunned until 2007by the Hall. Even Genesis, who were the fathers ofprogressive rock, andwere formed in the 1960s,didnt get in until 2010!

    There is only one

way to give the Rock andRoll Hall of Fame whatthey deserve. Next timethey accept a rock legendafter years and years ofdisrespect, the band shouldgo to the ceremony, geton stage, and throw theiraward on the ground, smashing it to pieces. Thefans should boycott theceremony. That scam ofa Hall of Fame doesntdeserve the presenceof any of these bands.

    The Humpty Dumpty case

Humpty Dumpty saton a wall; Humpty Dump-ty had a great fall. All thekings horses and all thekings men could not putHumpty together again.Poor Humpty. At one timeor another we have all pon-dered the question: Howdid Mr. Dumpty come to beshattered before us? Thisquestion has baed philos-ophers since the beginningof time. Was our belovedeggman pushed? Being thescientically superior indi-vidual that I am, I have re-vealed the true story of theHumpty of Dumpties.

I began my research atthe place where it all hap-pened: a castle in Englandnamed Fort Crackme. AsI began to search for evi-dence, I noticed the manysafety violations in the

    structure. The aged stone

walls were poorly repairedwith twigs and hair gel, which easily crumbled un-der pressure. Based on

these observations, Hump-ty easily could have fallenfrom his perch on the castle. However, my investigationwas not over yet.

At the base of FortCrackme, I took a close lookat the remaining pieces ofeggshell. Although thisis considered the last evi-dence of the Humpty Case, I

    discovered the remnants of

a massive omelet. Someoneclearly wanted Mr. Dumptypoached, but who?

An analysis of the om-elet revealed its ingredients.

There was a pinch of Dump-ty, a slice of ham, and a hintof jealousy. Somebody was

jealous of Humptys perchupon the wall and clearlywanted to take his place.Who was it? It was noneother than the infamousSammy Sausage. For years,Sammy had been enviousof Mr. Dumptys numberone position on the TopBreakfast Foods of Americalist, and when Humpty wasallowed a seat atop FortCrackme, things went a lit-tle too far.

Today, Humpty has ashrine in Fort Crackme, andSammy Sausage was sen-tenced to the death pen-alty and now can be foundwithin Sausage McMunseverywhere.

    Invention of the candy cane

    Worst Christmas gift ideas

Christmas is comingand presents are consideredto be one of the best partsabout the holiday. Every-one looks forward to thatmorning when they opentheir eyes, run underneaththe Christmas tree, and tearapart wrapping paper. Whatthey are expecting is some-thing completely amazingand worth the wait, butsometimes what is receivedis not what was expected.

One of the absoluteworst gifts is anything to dowith a diet plan or a mem-bership to the gym. No onewants others to take noticeof their waist size. Another

bad idea would be gettinga box full of bitten out ofchocolates. Forrest Gump

said, Life is like a box ofchocolates, you never knowwhat youre gonna get. WellForrest was right, one willnever know what they aregonna get if all of it is gone.

Many people could eas-ily take things the wrongway; the person giving thegift could possibly havethe best intentions, but theones receiving the gift couldtake it the wrong way. Forinstance, one may love get-ting deodorant for Christ-

mas while another couldthink they are being toldto take a shower and theyneed to get their smellybutts out of the room. Ju-nior, Josh Merman says Ionce received q-tips, and

my friend gave me an anni-versary card on Christmas!

    Everyone has always

longed for something theyhave wanted but neverbeen able to get. For Christ-mas this is possibly thatchance to give them thatone special thing. In somecases these gifts are hand-me-downs and in some sit-uations that is not the idealgift. For instance used shoesor scratched CDs or a movieperhaps is not the typicalgift that everyone looks for-ward to.

    Everyone wants the

best gift under the treeto have their name on it.Christmas is almost here sogive a gift that they will trulyappreciate; after all it couldbe you.

Some say that the rstcandy canes were invented

in 1670 by a choirmaster atthe Cologne Cathedral, whohanded them out to keepyoung ones quiet duringthe Christmas ceremony.Apparently they were bentinto their now famousshape to honor the celebra-tion. Who would ever be-lieve such a silly thing? It isobviously the Munchkins inthe Land of Oz who invent-ed the candy cane.

    It started a long timeago, say . . . 50 million

months ago? Now this wasback in the dinosaur agewhen the Land of Oz wasrst established, and Mr.

Tarchione and Mr. Bellistonwere rst born. The rstmunchkins were tired ofeating dirt and rocks; mostof them broke their teeth onthese hard candies of theirtime and could only eat theoor of Oz.

One Sunday when thehead Munchkin, Belliston, was reading his morning

paper, on an article on thenew sap covered leaves,he consulted his Munchkinsecretary, Tarchione, abouta new food. Belliston want-ed something new to addto the table; something that

tasted like peppermint andcelebrated the Christmasseason. The head Munch-kin wanted it to be namedcandy and said, Theymust be in the shape of a

cane, so that when I turn oldand gray, I may put them togood use. Therefore we willcall it the Candy Cane. Bel-liston sent Tarchione to thechocolate factory to consultMr. Wonka.

Tarchione took a long journey through, whatFairy Godmother wouldcall, Blithering winds andscorching deserts. Heclimbed to the highestroom in the tallest tow-er, and yet that was notenough torture. He cameinto contact with his archenemy the wicked witchof the west, Mr. Zuercher.

This wicked witch ques-tioned Tarchione about his

journey, and of course hegave in to Zuercher, spill-ing about the secret candyformula they were lookingfor. Zuercher continues topick on Tarchione by mak-ing him name ten candybars, giving him swirlies inthe outhouse, and dumpinghim in the trash repeatedly.

Just when Tarchionethought his life would neverget better, Fat Albert cameto his rescue and said, Hey,hey, hey! Which witch wantsto play? With that, he threwthe wicked witch Zuercher

into a pond where he melt-ed. Tarchione thanked thisbig, friendly man and gotback on his way. Tarchioneendured the toughest of all

    journeys, and when he got

there, he met a society of hissize: Oompa Loompas. These strange little

men of Tarchiones size werevery interesting. They sangto him, Oompa OompaDoopa dee do. Ive got an-other puzzle for you. If youwish for a candy recipe, thenall you have to do is followme. So Tarchione contin-ued through the chocolatefactory, where he had a fourhour meeting with Mr. Won-ka. After much debate, theynally settled for red andwhite striped candy canes.

Tarchione was pleased withcompleting his job andheaded back through thewind and desert to Munch-kin Land. Belliston sampledthe new invention and wasvery ecstatic.

If anyone ever says thata choir master inventedcandy canes, they are lyingto you. It is very clear thatthe head munchkin, CanyonRidges very own Bellistoncreated these magical can-

dies. Of course Belliston willsay he is in his thirties, buthe is honestly over 4 mil-lion years old; keeping thesecret of the candy cane allto himself.

    at K-mart or just $199.99.

Hurry ast, because they aregoing like wildfre.

Second would have tobe all o the Twilight books.

Theres nothing better thansitting by the freplace lateat night, and reading aboutsome vampire love. Its thebest!

    Third, I would o course,ask or a kitten calendar.

Fourth would have tobe one o those toy cars youcan drive.

Thats all that I couldthink o when it comes tomy wish list, so I took it tothe halls o CRHS, and askeda couple o students whatmight be on their wish list.

    When asked what would

be on top o her wish list,Canyon Ridges very ownKelly Ann Buddecke(senior)responded, All I have ever

wanted or Christmas isworld peace and happiness. Senior Garren Moreno hasasked or,Another Lakerschampionship.

Another hot item Ivebeen hearing about, thenewest addition to the Callo Duty series, Call o Duty:Black Ops. This seems to beat the top o most wish listsi not close towards the top.

With the combinationo these gits, your lielongdream will be ulflled. Thatpink pony has fnally been

    rode. Go Christmas!
