McIntyre and Gilbertson crowned ENEOS endurance champions

John McIntyre and Simon Gilbertson have proved strategy is stronger than speed to score their maiden ENEOS North Island Endurance Series title together. The pair managed to win the Three Hour Series and the GT–B class in their Manthey Racing-built Porsche 911 GT3 Cup MR, despite battling some stiff GT3 opposition.
A win at round one, fourth at round two, and second in the season finale at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon cemented their place at the top of the standings. Ultimately, it was their one-stop strategy that was pivotal in their quest for outright honours.
Initially the team had only planned an assault on the GT–B class to qualify them for the New Zealand Endurance Championship. As McIntyre said, anything after that would be a bonus. Fortunately, the results landed in their favour.
The team are planning on contesting the Carter’s Tyres South Island Endurance Series, which begins in September. After that, a tilt at the New Zealand Endurance Championship at Highlands Motorsport Park is almost a certainty for the team.

The South Island Endurance Series bursts into life in September with some exciting entries set to line up and duke it out for the Silverware. With the Series rules remaining largely unchanged from 2017 and again aligned closely with the sister North Island Endurance Series, there has already been significant interest from both new and existing competitors.
Defending Series champions, Carters Tyres Motorsport, will have a change in drivers for the 2018 season. Current NZ One Hour Endurance Champion Shane Hodgson is set to take the wheel of their Mercedes AMG SLS GT3 alongside Dwayne Carter, while Matt Carter will team up with young gun Jordan Baldwin behind the wheel of the Carters Tyres Falcon V8 Supercar.
There will be a second AMG SLS GT3 in 2018 with confirmation that Mike Racing will also be heading South, with the Dayle ITM Mercedes GT3 for Brendan Leitch and Christina Orr-West.
A rookie to the Series will be Aussie based Kiwi young gun, Jaxon Evans, who is currently leading the highly competitive Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship. Jaxon has attended some
of the SI Endurance meetings previously as a mentor and driver trainer, but for 2018 will line up for a full assault in a recently purchased South Island based Audi R8 LMS GT3 car.
Recently crowned North Island Series champions Simon Gilbertson and Johnny McIntyre will return and are making a play for the North/South double, the team returning to a GT3 car for their South Island campaign, with the ex-Glenn Smith SaReNi Camaro GT3 replacing their Manthey spec Porsche 991.
The 2018 Carters Tyres South Island Endurance Series will again be run over 3 exciting rounds, with a round held at each of the three traditional South Island race circuits. The Series starts at Teretonga Park, Invercargill on Saturday 15th September, then to Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Christchurch for round two on Saturday 29th September and the grand finale at Levels Raceway, Timaru on 13th October 2018. The Series is then followed by the 2018/19 New Zealand Endurance Championship event at the magnificent Highlands Motorsport Park on Saturday 24th November.

Like a lot of young people, Fraser Pattie wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to do when he left school. He’d always assumed he would go to university, but as he approached his final year, he started leaning more and more towards a career in the trades and services. His friend who worked as an apprentice refinisher at Babbage & McCullough, Timaru, suggested he come along one day to check it out and see if it was something he might be interested in.
“I didn’t really know much about cars,” said Fraser, “but I liked the sound of what my friend did, so thought I should go along and experience it for myself.” One visit was all it took and Fraser was hooked, enrolling in MITO’s StartUp® programme for his final year at school. StartUp, an automotive training programme for secondary school students, enabled Fraser to spend one day a week working in the paint shop at Babbage & McCullough, gaining practical skills and a valuable introduction to the working environment.
Towards the end of the year, Babbage & McCullough owner, Jimmy Arps, told Fraser that there was a position coming up as a collision repair technician and whether that might appeal to him. “For the next few weeks I worked in the panel
shop instead of the paint shop,” says Fraser, “and actually ended up enjoying the work even more! So everything worked out perfectly and I was able to start an apprenticeship straight after leaving school.”
“I saw the potential in Fraser right from the beginning,” says Jimmy. “He was always looking for ways to help out around the workshop, which showed us his drive and initiative. That’s why the StartUp programme is so valuable. It lets you get a feel for the person in terms of their work ethic, demeanour and whether their personality is a good fit with your team. We’ve had three StartUp students previously who have all gone on to apprenticeships with us. That in itself shows you that the programme really works. It’s a great pipeline for new blood into the industry.”
Now enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair (Non-Structural Repair) (Level 3 and 4) through MITO, 18-year-old Fraser is looking forward to learning more skills, getting stuck in to his apprenticeship and realising his full potential in the industry. It’s that attitude that recently saw Fraser awarded a 2018 MITO Kick Start scholarship which contributes
$1,000 towards the fees for any MITO apprenticeship or traineeship programme at Level 4 or above.
“I was stoked to receive a MITO scholarship,” says Fraser, “and it will make my apprenticeship that much easier having that extra support.” Plus, as Fraser is eligible for two years of free fees for industry training through the government, the scholarship is transferred to the third year of his training programme, meaning the annual training fees for Fraser’s entire apprenticeship will be funded.
“I’m so glad I found something I enjoy doing as a career,” says Fraser. “I really love working with my hands, pulling things apart and seeing how they go together and I’m learning more and more each day. The team at Babbage & McCullough are really friendly and everyone is willing to help out and answer questions - which just makes my job that much more enjoyable.”
For other young people interested in getting into the industry, Fraser offers some simple advice. “StartUp gave me a great idea of what to expect in an apprenticeship, so talk with your careers advisor to sign-up to StartUp!”

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came about owning Gillespie Panel & Paint
I started my business in my sisters shed in 1989, gradually building up the business for six years. In 1995, I purchased a section in town and built my own panelshop. As business continued to grow, I purchased the competing panelshop and operated from the two sites for the next 10 years. After a trip to Australia in 2014, I realised what modern collision repair facilities should look like and made the decision to build a new purpose-built panelshop, designed to maintain and improve service levels and create a modern and sustainable business.
We are now Northland's industry leaders for collision repair. We ensure we are always working with the latest technology, our team is regularly being up-skilled, and we never miss a deadline so our customers are satisfied 100% of the time.

Finishing second in the Fuji 500, the longest race of the season, has propelled the No. 1 KeePer TOM’S LC500 of Ryo Hirakawa/Nick Cassidy into the lead of the Autobacs SUPER GT Series. It is the third podium of the season for the pairing, giving them a 47-point lead over the round winners, the No. 36 au TOM’S LC500 of Kazuki Nakajima/Yuhi Sekiguchi.
It was a come from behind victory for Kazuki Nakajima/Yuhi Sekiguchi after starting third on the grid. In the final stages of the race, the leading cars faded with engine problems gifting the race lead to the TOM’S LC500. Previously in the last round in Thailand (Thai Round), the au TOM’S LC500 was vying for the top spot when it ran out of gas to lose the race, but this time, it finished the race to take its first victory of the season.
In second place was No. 1 KeePer TOM’S LC500 (Ryo Hirakawa/Nick Cassidy), in 3rd No. 17 KEIHIN NSX-GT (Koudai Tsukakoshi/Takashi Kogure) who started from 14th on the grid due to trouble during the qualifying.
Holder marks off bucket list Rally FinlandKiwis, Dave Holder and Jason Farmer, secured a ninth place class finish in their first-ever run on the famed high speed special stages of Rally Finland. While the pair had hoped for a stronger Finnish result, in the FIA Junior World Rally Championship category they are contesting for the first time this year, they have continued their unbroken record of finishing every JWRC event so far.
Mt Maunganui-based Holder, notes a number of positives he can take from the 26-29 July running of Rally Finland, including consistency of their overall stage times, a generally clean run which enabled them to get to the finish and learning that they can trust the pace notes that he and Farmer, from Hamilton, write during the pre-event reconnaissance.
Holder says there were also plenty of challenges. “We came here expecting to have a bit more speed as we felt
this would be more similar to New Zealand roads. They are similar in many respects, but they also have lots of ruts which I struggled with unfortunately.”
Nearly getting stuck in the ruts at a stage start, learning the necessity of being able to trust your pace notes on the high speed stages, and catching a ‘moment’ before it all went bad were among other issues that the pair worked through during the three-and-a-bit days of the rally dubbed the Finnish Grand Prix.
Holder is currently 11th in the JWRC drivers’ championship rankings from 17 registered entrants. All JWRC competitors drive identical two-wheel-drive Ford Fiesta R2 EcoBoost rally cars prepared and run by M-Sport Poland. The next and final JWRC event is Rally Turkey, with the 13-16 September event carrying double points.

Tell us a bit about yourself and Ultimate Automotive
I started my career in the automotive industry when I was 14, working for my uncle during school holidays. Since then, I have gained an A-Grade Automotive Mechanic qualification, and completed factory training with Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover. Previous work at prestige dealerships including Lamborghini, Bentley and Jaguar in London and Australia, as well as local workshops in Hamilton, has given me a huge breadth of automotive knowledge and experience.
The business has been running for almost 12 years and our team of 5 mechanics, work like a well-oiled machine. We pride ourselves on offering top quality, stress-free service. No job is too big or too small.
What changes have you noticed in the industry?
Everything is getting so technical. All the cars have more tech, which means we continuously need to support and up-skill our mechanics.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
We pride ourselves on delivering a customer-focused approach. Our team is friendly and professional. And everyone here is a mechanic, from the office guys to the manager, which I think is important.

Dad taught me to drive on a tractor! I then moved on to a 1978 Toyota Light Ace Van column shift. My first car, which didn’t last that long, was a 1970 Ford Capri…it was a bit of a bomb.

National motorsport championship promoter, Speed Works Events, admits it has been taken by surprise with the huge level of interest in the first round of its 2018/2019 calendar at Pukekohe Park over the December 7-9 weekend.
Speed Works has been keen to develop a pre-Christmas fixture for fans and companies since it took over the running of the national championship series two years ago, but the interest in the Pukekohe meeting – which will be run on the circuit’s original full back straight configuration – is proving unparalleled for the promoter.

A record field, featuring the cream of the country’s young up and coming motor racing talent is expected to contest this summer’s Toyota 86 Championship.
“We’ve never had so many potential drivers, three months before the first round,” said Geoff Short, the category manager. On the list of drivers to confirm for this season’s championship are three drivers from this year’s MotorSport New Zealand Elite Academy including 16-year-old Jayden Ransley, from Christchurch, who was unlucky to finish fourth in last year’s championship. Jayden showed that he will be a real contender with his ability to win races.

old Aucklander Peter Vodanovich, who showed promise in the few rounds he competed in and 15-year-old Callum Hedge, who is the current Formula 1600 Champion. The previous two winners of the Elite Academy, 20-year-old Jordan Baldwin from Auckland, who topped the class last year and 2016’s top student, 19-year-old Jacob Smith from St Heliers, are also in the run of the pack chasing this year’s championship.
The Toyota 86 Championship, which is about to enter its sixth season, will start with the now traditional first round in conjunction with Supercars at Pukekohe from November 2-4.

Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon and his British co-driver Seb Marshall secured a well-deserved fourth place at Rally Finland, their best ever result at this iconic World Rally Championship event, which ran 26-29 July.
For his ninth run in Finland, Paddon’s pre-event goal was to be in the top five early on so he could fight for a podium finish. With Hyundai team-mates Thierry Neuville and Andreas Mikkelsen out of contention, Paddon drove to team orders to secure the best possible manufacturers’ championship points for the team, which remains in the lead of the manufacturers’ World Rally Championship standings. Paddon’s performance was very consistent with 16 top five stage times in the event’s 23 special stages and his fourth-place equals Hyundai team’s best-ever finish in Finland.
Paddon moves into 12th on the WRC drivers’ championship table. Paddon’s Hyundai Motorsport team-mates Thierry Neuville and Andreas Mikkelsen finished in ninth and tenth overall respectively. Paddon’s next rally with the team is the new-to-the-WRC Rally Turkey in September.
