Manyofusteenagersoftendismisstheimportanceofahealthy,balanceddietanddon’tconsidertheadvantagesofmaintainingthisroutine.Ourbodiesneedthecorrectnutrientstofunctioncorrectly,andallowourorgansandtissuestoworkeffectively.Poornutritioncancauseourbodiestobeincreasinglypronetodisease,infection,fatigueand,asaresult,poorperformance.So,inordertointroduceabalanceddietourlives,weshouldtakenoteofthefollowing:

• Fruits:besidesbeingagreatsourceofnutrition,fruitcanmakeadelicioussnack

• Vegetables:theyareaprimarysourceofessentialvitaminsandminerals.Agoodvarietycanprovideallthepossiblebeneficialnutrientsourbodiesrequire

• Proteins:Meatsandbeansareprimarysourcesofprotein,whichareessentialformuscleandbraindevelopment.Asanalternativetomeat,tofu,tempehandothersoy-basedproductsareexcellentsourcesofprotein

• Dairy:Theseprovidecalcium,vitaminDandotheressentialnutrients

Especiallyatourage,weneedtoconsiderthebestlifestylechoicesinorderforourbodiestodevelopsuccessfully.Notonlythis,buthealthyeatingandbeinghydrated,alongsideagoodsleeproutine,benefitsourworkefficiencyandaidsustoachievehighergradeswhenitcomestoexams–somethingeverystudentdesires.

Engineering-TheMisconceptionsandTheReality

ThereisaquotebytheauthorJamesMichenerwhichstates:“Scientistsdreamaboutdoinggreatthings.Engineersdothem.”ThishasalwaysbeenonethemainreasonsIloveengineering-thechancetogooutanddosomething,tocreatethings,toimprovelives.Butunfortunately,inmyexperiences,theverysubjectsthatmakeupEngineering(mathsandphysics)canbelikemarmite,inthatmoststudentswilleitherlovethemorhatethem.Manyatimehasmydeclarationofapassionateloveofphysicshasbeenmetwithashockedcry,asympatheticglanceoragrimaceofdisgust.Thisresponsealwaysbaffledme,asIcouldnotunderstandwhatitwasaboutphysicsthatmadepeoplerecoilassoonasthesubjectwasmentioned.Forme,mathsandphysicshavealwaysbeenaboutbeingcreativeandopenminded;workingtowardsthatrightanswerattheendhasalwaysbeensosatisfying.

Sowhatisitabouttheideaofengineeringthatrepelssomanystudents?Surelytheopportunitytogooutintotheworldtoinnovateandinventmachines,buildingsandcomputersthatwillhelphugequantitiesofpeopleiscompellingandexciting?Fromspeakingtostudentsaboutengineering,Irealisedtherewasahugelackofknowledgeaboutthesubject.Thegeneralideaofanengineerwassomeonefixingacar,whichcouldn’tbefurtherfromthetruth.Whatalotofpeopledonotrealiseisthatengineeringcoversanimmenserangeofareas,impactingmostelementsofourlives.Thismightbethedesigningofastageforatheatreperformance,thedevelopmentsofmedicinesanddrugstocurediseases,orsoftwareprogrammesfordocumentingbooksinalibrary.Engineersarenotjustfixingourmachines-theyarecreatingand

innovatingthingswhichmakeoureverydayliveseasier.Thesedevelopmentsdonotjustbenefit‘firstworld’countries,likeours,butcountriesallacrosstheglobe.

Afavouriteinnovationofmineistheingeniousfloatingballfirstflushsystem-alifechanginginventionthatisbringingcleanerwatertopeoplein‘thirdworld’countries.Asshowninthediagram,itcollectswaterfromguttersplacedontheroofsofbuildings.Astherainstartstofall,thewateranddebrisfromtheroodaccumulatesinachangerwithaconicaltop.Asthechamberfills,aballfloatsonthecollectedwater’ssurface.Eventually,theballbecomesstuckintheconicalchamberentrance,herebyblockingthewater’sentrytothebottomchamberandthereforeredirectingcollectedrainwaterintothemaincleanwaterstoragetank.This,therefore,makessurethatthewatercollectedisfreeofdebrisandcleantodrink.

Thoseofyoukeepingupwiththeengineeringworldwillhaveheardaboutoneofmyfavouritenewinnovations,whichisonlynowstartingtobemade:theSOCKKET.Thiscreationcontradictsanypriorbeliefsaboutthetediousnatureofthegenerationofelectricity.It’saballwhichusesthekineticenergyofbeingplayedwith(e.g.inafootballmatch)togenerateelectricityintheformoflight!So,myargumentis,engineeringmightchallengeyourmindbutitcertainlyisnotdull!

Turton‘BakeOff’

OnThursday23rdMarch,12IWdidanEasterBakeOffintheSixthFormCommonRoom.Itwasahugesuccess;thecakessoldoutand,

mostimportantly,weraised£128forourchosencharity,‘CommunityChristmas’.CommunityChristmasisacharitythat

providesChristmasdinnertotheelderlyonChristmasday,whowouldotherwisebealone.12IWfeelthatnobodyshouldbealone,especiallyatChristmastime,therefore,asaform,weareextremelypassionateaboutthischarity.Wehaveraisedmoneyfortheminthepast,whenwearrangedChristmasjumperday.Thecharityisonlyasmallorganisation,sothedonationsthattheywillreceivefromus

aregreatlyappreciated,astheyhaveexpressedinalettertousinthepast.12IWlovedseeingtheteamworkandeffortthatwasputintoallthecakes,andwehopetodomorecharityeventslikethisinthefuture.Also,wewouldliketosayahugethankyoutoMissWright,whohelpedussomuchtoorganisetheevent,itwouldn’thavebeenpossiblewithouther!AnotherhugewelldonehastogotothewinneroftheBakeOff:GeorgiaMulvaney,whosecakewasamazing!Thankyoutoeveryoneelsewhoparticipatedbybringinginacake,orbyshowingyoursupportthroughbuyingone.

Onlyhavingbeeninaugurated2monthsfromthetimeofwriting,Trumphasalreadymademovementsonmanyofthepromiseshemadeintheleaduptotheelection.HeusedtheexecutiveordersthathehasasPresidentinordertobegintofulfilhispledges.

Asyou’veprobablyheard,Trump’srecentimmigrationpolicyhasbanned7majority-

MuslimcountriesinanattempttopreventIslamicimmigrationintotheUS.Thishasbeenmetwithmajoruproar;

ahugevarietyofpeople,fromcelebritiessuchasJamesCorden,toUSDiplomatsthemselves,havecondonedtheban,seeingitasaracistbackwardsmove,reminiscentofthe1960s.However,Iraqtakenofftheban,afterhemeetwithofficials.

PlanstobuildtheinfamouswallhehasthreatenedtopreventMexicanimmigrationhavebegun.ThewallwasoriginallypromisedbyTrumpinthelead-uptohiscampaignin

ordertokeepout“Mexicanrapistsanddrugdealers”.Originally,theestimatedcostwas$10billion,howeverexpertsbelievethattherealcostwillbecloserto$30billion-enoughtosolvetheglobalfoodcrisisforayear,accordingtotheNewYorkTimes.

HehasalsotalkedofaSwedishterrorattack,whichTrumpusedtojustifyhisban.Despitehiscomments,thereareyettohavebeenanynewsreportsonthe“attack”andmanySwedishresidentshavenorealknowledgeabouttheincident.Presumably,thisisbecauseitdidn’thappen.

Hislatestmovementsawthebanningofmostelectricitemsonplanes,withlaptops,tabletsetchavingtobecheckedinbeforeflying.ThiscomesaftersuspicionsofAlQaedabuildingbatterybombsthatfitinlaptops,powerfulenoughtotakedownaplane.TheresaMayhasalsoannouncedthatBritainwillfollowtheban.

Recently,agroupofPsychology,Sociology,GovernmentandPoliticsandHistorystudentswentforaresidentialtriptoLondon.Theclassessplitforthedays,andmetupintheeveningsbeforeheadingbacktothesamehostel.Asa

GovernmentandPoliticsstudent,myaccountismainlyofthethingsthatwedid.

Onthefirstday,wedidn’thavetoomuchtimetogoanywhere.Betweenthethreedifferenttrainrides,andthetubestothestation,weonlymanagedtoarriveatabout6pm,andonthelastdayweweregonebylunch,soweonlyreallyhadabout2fulldays.Despitethat,wemanagedtogotoDowningStreet,Parliament,theEuropeHouse,andtheSupremeCourt.Parliamentwasprobablythehighlightofthese;wewatchedadebate,gotatouraroundthebuilding,andmetBoltonNorthEastMP,DavidCrausby.Weevengot

thechancetoaskhimsomequestionsabouthisjob.

Inthetwoevenings,wedidlotsofleisureactivities.Onthefirstnight,wewenttoPizzaExpress,beforegoingtowatchWickedintheWestEnd.Onthesecondnight,wewenttoanAmerican-stylediner,

iceskatingandbowling.Apersonalhighlightformewasprobablytheiceskating,althoughIspentmoretimeholdingontotheedgesthanactuallyskating.

Onthefinalday,wemanagedtogotoEuropeHouseforaquicktour.Unfortunately,wedidn’thaveahugeamountoftime,andwehadtogetonthetubebacktothetrainstationquiteearly.Althoughthetrainjourneyswerefairlyenjoyable,theyweresomewhatbittersweetbecausetheymeantthatthetriphadended.

Ifyouhaven’theardaboutthisseriesthenImustask,‘wherehaveyoubeenforthelastsixmonths?’Theserieshashadworldwidesuccess;thecastappearedatawardshowopenings,andpeopleevendressedupasthecharactersforHalloweenthisyear!Iwantedtoseewhatallthefusswasabout.Therefore,

Iwatchedtheseriesandthoughtitwasamazing.Iamcurrentlyre-watchingthewholeseries,asthisstrangeandmysteriousprogrammehadmehooked.Ifyoudon’tlikescaryprogrammes,thisisn’ttheoneforyou.Thestoryisbasedona

disappearanceofayoungboycalledWill,andhowayounggirl,whowasexperimentedon,openedagatethatledtoanalternateworldcalledthe‘upsidedown’,whereWillishidingfromamonster.Itallsoundsveryconfusing,butifyoustickwithit,itgetseasiertounderstand.Thereareonlyeightepisodesintheseries,butthesecondseriesiscomingoutattheendofOctoberthisyear,whichIcannotwaittosee.StarRating:

Therehasbeenalotofspeculationaboutwhetherthismoviewouldbeasgoodasthe

originalcartoon.Thisisbecausesomemovieschangeaspectsofthebookororiginalfilmtokeepthefilmmodern,uptodateandappropriateforthetargetaudience.I’msurethatmanyofyouknowthestory

ofBeautyandtheBeast,asitisaclassicDisneyfilm.Thismademenervousabouthowthisfilmwasgoingtoturnout,asIdidn’twantittoruinthemagicofDisney.Forthosewhoarewonderingwhatthefilmisabout:ayounginnocentgirlistakenprisonerbyaBeastinhiscastle.Then,asthefilmprogresses,shemakesfriendswiththeenchantedstaffinthecastle,andlearnstolookbeyondtheBeast’slooks;shefinallyseeshiswarmheartbeneath.Bytheendofthefilm,myfeelingstowardsthefilmhadcompletelychanged.IfeltEmmaWatson,whoplaysBelleinthefilm,wasamazingandthatshesangsobeautifully.Also,alloftheminorcharacters,suchastheCandleandtheTeaPot,wereanimatedinsomuchdetailthattheyappearedtobereal.Thesets,thecostumesandtheanimationmadethemoviesoheart-warmingandspecial.Itwasobviousthatloadsoftimeandefforthadgoneintomakingthisincrediblefilmthatwouldsuitallages.StarRating:
