The Emerging Leader Development Program of the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association (FFVA) gathered shirts for our migrant parents as a service project. This group of young leaders in agriculture chose to help parents and their children in RCMA’s pesticide education program. When parents come in from the fields they wash their hands and put on a shirt before getting their children from the classroom. By doing this children will not come in contact with pesticide residue. The shirts were delivered to Knights Griffin the Plant City Area Office and sent a watermelon bin full to the Immokalee Centers. “RCMA sent me to the LA RAZA Conference” By Sylvia Blanco Hi Barbara, I just wanted to say hi and thank you so much for sending us to the NCLR conference. It was the most motivating and inspiring experience that I ever had. I wanted to point out which workshop that I liked the best but they were all very interesting. From meeting Nelly Galan and Sandra Cisneros, from the Adelante Movement; I felt like Sandra Cisneros was describing me when she was talking about how she felt scared to express herself. She also advised us to stop thinking about negative things and focus on positive outcomes There was another workshop on "Moving Communities". The parent talked about how they were involved in getting the community and parents involved in planning their activities in their community. How they would march to prevent any child care cuts from happening. Suze Orman was telling us to "stop buying shoes and buy buildings" stop wasting our money on unimportant things. Oh there were so many things that went on that it would take me a day to share. I still go to sleep talking to my husband about my trip. Again I thank you for giving me the opportunity, I want to thank RCMA for all of the places that I know I would not have experienced without your help. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!! Camisetas para los padres después de trabajar en los campos. El programa de desarrollo de lideres de la asociacion de frutas y vegetales de la florida (FFVA) recogió camisas para hacer un proyecto de servicios con los padres migrantes. Este grupo de lideres jóvenes en la agricultura escogió ayudar a padres y niños del programa de educación sobre pesticida de RCMA. Cuando los padres vienen a casa después del trabajo lavan sus manos y se ponen una camisa antes de recoger sus niños del salón. Haciendo esto los niños no tendrán contacto con los residuos de pesticida. Estas camisas fueron entregadas a Knights Griffin de la oficina del área de plan City y enviaron un contenedor de sandias lleno al centro de Immokalee. “RCMA sent me to the LA RAZA Conference” By Sylvia Blanco Hola Barbara, solo quería saludarle y agradecerle mucho por enviarnos a las conferencias de NCLR. Fue una de las experiencias mas motivadoras e inspiradoras que pude haver tenido. Quisiera puntualizar que conferencia me gusto más pero todas estuvieron muy interesantes. Desde conocer a Nelly Galan, Sandra Cisnero del movimiento Adelante. Senti que Sandra Cisneros estaba describiendome cuando ella estaba hablando hacerca de como ella sentía miedo para expresarse ante los demas. Tambien nos aconsejó como evitar de pensar en cosos negativas y enfocarnos en lo positive. Otra de las conferencias sobre “Moviendo comunidades”. El padre habló sobre como envolver comunidades y familias para planear actividades en su comunidad. Como ellos marcharían para prevenir cualquier corte de presupuestos en cuidado de niños. Suze Orman nos dijo “paren de comprar zapatos y edificios” paren de gastar dinero en cosas que no son importantes. Hubieron muchas cosas mas y me tomaría mucho tiempo compartirlas. Todavia me duermo compartiendo sobre mi viaje con mi esposo. De nuevo gracias por darme la oportunidad, quiero agradecer a RCMA por todos los lugares que conosco y que no experimentado sin su ayuda. By Sonja Tighe Shirts being delivered to Knights Griffin, Plant City Migrant Head Start Child Care Center Un colegio de enseñanza media hecho a la medida de los niños Excerpts from RCMA Fall News 2012 El 15 de noviembre un cinta se corto para conmemorar la Gran Inauguración de la Academia de Liderazgo de RCMA, líderes de la comunidad, donantes y amigos de RCMA fueron invitados para conocer las nuevas instalaciones de la Academia de Liderazgo. Durante la ceremonia los grados cuarto y quinto cantaron ”Nifty Fifty” y estuvieron muy orgullosos de su colegio y sus logros. Cuando el año escolar comenzó cuarenta y nueve estudiantes se aventuraron dentro de la nueva Academia de Liderazgo con los ojos abiertos y en silencio maravillados. El nuevo colegio inicio como el vecino y hermano mayor del colegio de 12 años de RCMA, la Academia de Wimauma, principalmente para proveer 3 años adicionales de educación bi-cultural a el alumnado del colegio elemental. La gran mayoría de los estudiantes de la Academia de lideres vieron crecer desde sus cimientos la pasada primavera durante sus recorridos por los pasillos abiertos de la Academia de Wimauma. Casi todos los estudiantes del colegio secundario son hispanos. “esto proporciona lo que los niños necesitan”, dijo Barbara Mainster, líder del esfuerzo de consecución de fondos de 4- años que ayudo a pagar por la Academia de Liderazgo. “Ellos necesitan profesores que promuevan desarrollo, sensibles a los retos de la vida de los trabajadores agrícolas. HOY RCMA: Opening Doors to Opportunities A middle school tailor-made for kids Excerpts from RCMA Fall News 2012 On November 15 th a ribbon cutting was held to commemorate the Grand Opening of RCMA Leadership Academy community leaders, donors and friends of RCMA were to invited to tour the new Leadership Academy building. During the ceremony the fourth and fifth grades sang “Nifty Fifty” and were so proud of their school and their accomplishments. When the school year began forty-seven students ventured into the brand-new Leadership Academy wide-eyed and quietly thrilled. The new middle school opened as a next-door big brother to RCMA’s 12-year-old Wimauma Academy, chiefly to provide three extra years of bicultural education to alumni of the elementary school. Most students of Leadership Academy had watched it rise from the ground last spring during their travels down the open-air decks of Wimauma Academy. Nearly all the students of both schools are Hispanic. “It fits what the kids need,” said Barbara Mainster, leader of a 4- year-old funding drive that helped pay for the Leadership Academy. “They need nurturing teachers, sensitive to the challenges of farmworkers’ lives. They need individual attention. And they need a school that really engages their parents, despite their language difficulties.” Charlotte Bethany, who teaches English and Language Arts at Leadership Academy, now has the largest classroom in her 11 years as a teacher. “I’ve got storage!” she exclaimed “I’ve got cabinets! At full capacity, Leadership Academy will accommodate 132 students. All-in-all everyone is very happy with their new school, from the students to the teachers!
